ਜਿਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥
जिन चाखिआ सेई सादु जाणनि जिउ गुंगे मिठिआई ॥
Jin cẖākẖi▫ā se▫ī sāḏ jāṇan ji▫o gunge miṯẖi▫ā▫ī.
They alone, who taste it, know its relish like a dumb man enjoying sweets.

ਅਕਥੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਚਾਲਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
अकथै का किआ कथीऐ भाई चालउ सदा रजाई ॥
Akthai kā ki▫ā kathī▫ai bẖā▫ī cẖāla▫o saḏā rajā▫ī.
How can I describe the Indescribable, O my brother? Ever abide I in His will.

ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਮਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
गुरु दाता मेले ता मति होवै निगुरे मति न काई ॥
Gur ḏāṯā mele ṯā maṯ hovai nigure maṯ na kā▫ī.
If the Lord makes man meet the beneficent Guru, then is the understanding produced. The Guru-less has not understanding.

ਜਿਉ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਾਲਹ ਭਾਈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੬॥
जिउ चलाए तिउ चालह भाई होर किआ को करे चतुराई ॥६॥
Ji▫o cẖalā▫e ṯi▫o cẖālah bẖā▫ī hor ki▫ā ko kare cẖaṯurā▫ī. ||6||
As the Lord causes us to act, so do we act. What other cleverness can man adopt, O brother?

ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
इकि भरमि भुलाए इकि भगती राते तेरा खेलु अपारा ॥
Ik bẖaram bẖulā▫e ik bẖagṯī rāṯe ṯerā kẖel apārā.
Some are deluded in doubt and some are imbued with Thy meditation. Thine play is incomprehensible.

ਜਿਤੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਲਾਏ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੂ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
जितु तुधु लाए तेहा फलु पाइआ तू हुकमि चलावणहारा ॥
Jiṯ ṯuḏẖ lā▫e ṯehā fal pā▫i▫ā ṯū hukam cẖalāvaṇhārā.
As Thou, O Lord, engagest them, so do they gather the fruit. Thou alone art the order-issue.

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
सेवा करी जे किछु होवै अपणा जीउ पिंडु तुमारा ॥
Sevā karī je kicẖẖ hovai apṇā jī▫o pind ṯumārā.
I may perform Thy service, if I have anything of my own, my soul and body are Thine, O Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
सतिगुरि मिलिऐ किरपा कीनी अम्रित नामु अधारा ॥७॥
Saṯgur mili▫ai kirpā kīnī amriṯ nām aḏẖārā. ||7||
God shows mercy to him who meets with the true God and the Nectar Name becomes his support.

ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੰ ॥
गगनंतरि वासिआ गुण परगासिआ गुण महि गिआन धिआनं ॥
Gagnanṯar vāsi▫ā guṇ pargāsi▫ā guṇ mėh gi▫ān ḏẖi▫ānaʼn.
Such a man abides in heaven and in him become manifest virtues, and in virtues dwell the divine knowledge and contemplation.

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਤਤੋ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਨੰ ॥
नामु मनि भावै कहै कहावै ततो ततु वखानं ॥
Nām man bẖāvai kahai kahāvai ṯaṯo ṯaṯ vakẖānaʼn.
The Name is pleasing to his mind, he utters and makes others utter it and speaks nothing but truth.

ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨੰ ॥
सबदु गुर पीरा गहिर ग्मभीरा बिनु सबदै जगु बउरानं ॥
Sabaḏ gur pīrā gahir gambẖīrā bin sabḏai jag ba▫urānaʼn.
The profound and unfathomable Name is his Guru and the spiritual guide. Without the Name the world is gone mad.

ਪੂਰਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਗੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੰ ॥੮॥੧॥
पूरा बैरागी सहजि सुभागी सचु नानक मनु मानं ॥८॥१॥
Pūrā bairāgī sahj subẖāgī sacẖ Nānak man mānaʼn. ||8||1||
He, whose soul is pleased with the True Name, O Nanak, is a perfect renouncer and naturally very fortunate.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕੀ ॥
सोरठि महला १ तितुकी ॥
Soraṯẖ mėhlā 1 ṯiṯukī.
Sorath 1st Guru Tituki.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬੰਧਕਾਰੀ ॥
आसा मनसा बंधनी भाई करम धरम बंधकारी ॥
Āsā mansā banḏẖnī bẖā▫ī karam ḏẖaram banḏẖkārī.
Hope and desire are entanglements, O brother, and rituals and religious ceremonies are the entrapments.

ਪਾਪਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
पापि पुंनि जगु जाइआ भाई बिनसै नामु विसारी ॥
Pāp punn jag jā▫i▫ā bẖā▫ī binsai nām visārī.
As a result of bad deeds and God acts, the mortal is born in the world. Forgetting the Name, he is ruined O brother.

ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਸਭੇ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
इह माइआ जगि मोहणी भाई करम सभे वेकारी ॥१॥
Ih mā▫i▫ā jag mohṇī bẖā▫ī karam sabẖe vekārī. ||1||
This mammon is the enticer of the world, O brother and all the deeds done in its wake are sinful.
|
ਸੁਣਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥
सुणि पंडित करमा कारी ॥
Suṇ pandiṯ karmā kārī.
Hear me, thou, O Brahman, the ritualist.
|
ਜਿਤੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਸੁ ਆਤਮ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जितु करमि सुखु ऊपजै भाई सु आतम ततु बीचारी ॥ रहाउ ॥
Jiṯ karam sukẖ ūpjai bẖā▫ī so āṯam ṯaṯ bīcẖārī. Rahā▫o.
The religious rite from which happiness springs, O brother, that is the real meditation of the essence of soul (Lord's Name). Pause.

ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਕੈ ਖੜੋ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥
सासतु बेदु बकै खड़ो भाई करम करहु संसारी ॥
Sāsaṯ beḏ bakai kẖaṛo bẖā▫ī karam karahu sansārī.
Thou standest and recitest the Shashtras and the Vedas, but thou doest the deed of a worldly man, O brother.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਭਾਈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
पाखंडि मैलु न चूकई भाई अंतरि मैलु विकारी ॥
Pakẖand mail na cẖūk▫ī bẖā▫ī anṯar mail vikārī.
Within thee is the filth of sins and this filth cannot be washed away through hypocrisy, O brother.

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਡੂਬੀ ਮਾਕੁਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਊਂਡੀ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
इन बिधि डूबी माकुरी भाई ऊंडी सिर कै भारी ॥२॥
In biḏẖ dūbī mākurī bẖā▫ī ūʼndī sir kai bẖārī. ||2||
In this very way the spider too is destroyed, by tumbling over head long, O brother.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ਭਾਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥
दुरमति घणी विगूती भाई दूजै भाइ खुआई ॥
Ḏurmaṯ gẖaṇī vigūṯī bẖā▫ī ḏūjai bẖā▫e kẖu▫ā▫ī.
Be evil inclinations, many are ruined, O brother, and by love of another, they go astray.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
बिनु सतिगुर नामु न पाईऐ भाई बिनु नामै भरमु न जाई ॥
Bin saṯgur nām na pā▫ī▫ai bẖā▫ī bin nāmai bẖaram na jā▫ī.
Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, O brother and without the name, doubt departs not.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੩॥
सतिगुरु सेवे ता सुखु पाए भाई आवणु जाणु रहाई ॥३॥
Saṯgur seve ṯā sukẖ pā▫e bẖā▫ī āvaṇ jāṇ rahā▫ī. ||3||
If man serves the True Guru, then obtains he the peace and his comings and goings come to an end, O brother.
|
ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
साचु सहजु गुर ते ऊपजै भाई मनु निरमलु साचि समाई ॥
Sācẖ sahj gur ṯe ūpjai bẖā▫ī man nirmal sācẖ samā▫ī.
True equipoise is obtained from the Guru, O brother and the immaculate soul is absorbed in the True Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
गुरु सेवे सो बूझै भाई गुर बिनु मगु न पाई ॥
Gur seve so būjẖai bẖā▫ī gur bin mag na pā▫ī.
He, who serves the Guru, comes to knows the way, O brother. Without the Guru, the way is not found.

ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੪॥
जिसु अंतरि लोभु कि करम कमावै भाई कूड़ु बोलि बिखु खाई ॥४॥
Jis anṯar lobẖ kė karam kamāvai bẖā▫ī kūṛ bol bikẖ kẖā▫ī. ||4||
What good acts can he perform, who has avarice in his mind? He eats poison by telling lies, O brother.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਤਥੁ ॥
पंडित दही विलोईऐ भाई विचहु निकलै तथु ॥
Pandiṯ ḏahī vilo▫ī▫ai bẖā▫ī vicẖahu niklai ṯath.
O Pandit, if thou churnest curd, the butter comes out of it.

ਜਲੁ ਮਥੀਐ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਏਹਾ ਵਥੁ ॥
जलु मथीऐ जलु देखीऐ भाई इहु जगु एहा वथु ॥
Jal mathī▫ai jal ḏekẖī▫ai bẖā▫ī ih jag ehā vath.
By churning water, thou shalt see but water, O brother. This world is a water like thing.
|
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਅਲਖੁ ॥੫॥
गुर बिनु भरमि विगूचीऐ भाई घटि घटि देउ अलखु ॥५॥
Gur bin bẖaram vigūcẖī▫ai bẖā▫ī gẖat gẖat ḏe▫o alakẖ. ||5||
Without the Guru, the man is ruined by doubt, O brother. The unseen Lord abides in every heart.

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਗੋ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਾਧੋ ਮਾਇ ॥
इहु जगु तागो सूत को भाई दह दिस बाधो माइ ॥
Ih jag ṯāgo sūṯ ko bẖā▫ī ḏah ḏis bāḏẖo mā▫e.
This world is like the cotton thread, which the mammon, has tied on the ten sides, O brother.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਾਠਿ ਨ ਛੂਟਈ ਭਾਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
बिनु गुर गाठि न छूटई भाई थाके करम कमाइ ॥
Bin gur gāṯẖ na cẖẖūt▫ī bẖā▫ī thāke karam kamā▫e.
Without the Guru, the knot is untied not, O brother, men grow weary of performing rituals.
|
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
इहु जगु भरमि भुलाइआ भाई कहणा किछू न जाइ ॥६॥
Ih jag bẖaram bẖulā▫i▫ā bẖā▫ī kahṇā kicẖẖū na jā▫e. ||6||
This world is led astray by superstition, O brother, Regarding it, man can say but nothing.
|
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਭੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
गुर मिलिऐ भउ मनि वसै भाई भै मरणा सचु लेखु ॥
Gur mili▫ai bẖa▫o man vasai bẖā▫ī bẖai marṇā sacẖ lekẖ.
Meeting with the Guru, the Lord's fear abides in the mind, O brother. To die in the Lord's fear is man's destiny.

ਮਜਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥
मजनु दानु चंगिआईआ भाई दरगह नामु विसेखु ॥
Majan ḏān cẖang▫ā▫ī▫ā bẖā▫ī ḏargėh nām visekẖ.
In God's court, the Name is superior to ablutions, alms and other good acts, O brother.
