Āsā mėhlā 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:
|
ਕਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੈ ਧੋਤੀ ॥
काइआ ब्रहमा मनु है धोती ॥
Kā▫i▫ā barahmā man hai ḏẖoṯī.
Let the body be the Brahmin, and let the mind be the loin-cloth;
|
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਸਪਾਤੀ ॥
गिआनु जनेऊ धिआनु कुसपाती ॥
Gi▫ān jane▫ū ḏẖi▫ān kuspāṯī.
let spiritual wisdom be the sacred thread, and meditation the ceremonial ring.
|
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
हरि नामा जसु जाचउ नाउ ॥
Har nāmā jas jācẖa▫o nā▫o.
I seek the Name of the Lord and His Praise as my cleansing bath.
|
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥
गुर परसादी ब्रहमि समाउ ॥१॥
Gur parsādī barahm samā▫o. ||1||
By Guru’s Grace, I am absorbed into God. ||1||
|
ਪਾਂਡੇ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
पांडे ऐसा ब्रहम बीचारु ॥
Pāʼnde aisā barahm bīcẖār.
O Pandit, O religious scholar, contemplate God in such a way
|
ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਚਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਪੜਉ ਨਾਮੇ ਚਜੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
नामे सुचि नामो पड़उ नामे चजु आचारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Nāme sucẖ nāmo paṛa▫o nāme cẖaj ācẖār. ||1|| rahā▫o.
that His Name may sanctify you, that His Name may be your study, and His Name your wisdom and way of life. ||1||Pause||
|
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨੇਊ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
बाहरि जनेऊ जिचरु जोति है नालि ॥
Bāhar jane▫ū jicẖar joṯ hai nāl.
The outer sacred thread is worthwhile only as long as the Divine Light is within.
|
ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
धोती टिका नामु समालि ॥
Ḏẖoṯī tikā nām samāl.
So, make the remembrance of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, your loin-cloth and the ceremonial mark on your forehead.
|
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
ऐथै ओथै निबही नालि ॥
Aithai othai nibhī nāl.
Here and hereafter, the Name alone shall stand by you.
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
विणु नावै होरि करम न भालि ॥२॥
viṇ nāvai hor karam na bẖāl. ||2||
Do not seek any other actions, except the Name. ||2||
|
ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥
पूजा प्रेम माइआ परजालि ॥
Pūjā parem mā▫i▫ā parjāl.
Worship the Lord in loving adoration, and burn your desire for Maya.
|
ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
एको वेखहु अवरु न भालि ॥
Ėko vekẖhu avar na bẖāl.
Behold only the One Lord, and do not seek out any other.
|
ਚੀਨੑੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਗਨ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
चीन्है ततु गगन दस दुआर ॥
Cẖīnĥai ṯaṯ gagan ḏas ḏu▫ār.
Become aware of reality, in the Sky of the Tenth Gate;
|
ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
हरि मुखि पाठ पड़ै बीचार ॥३॥
Har mukẖ pāṯẖ paṛai bīcẖār. ||3||
read aloud the Lord’s Word, and contemplate it. ||3||
|
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
भोजनु भाउ भरमु भउ भागै ॥
Bẖojan bẖā▫o bẖaram bẖa▫o bẖāgai.
With the diet of His Love, doubt and fear depart.
|
ਪਾਹਰੂਅਰਾ ਛਬਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
पाहरूअरा छबि चोरु न लागै ॥
Pāhrū▫arā cẖẖab cẖor na lāgai.
With the Lord as your night watchman, no thief will dare to break in.
|
ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ॥
तिलकु लिलाटि जाणै प्रभु एकु ॥
Ŧilak lilāt jāṇai parabẖ ek.
Let the knowledge of the One God be the ceremonial mark on your forehead.
|
ਬੂਝੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ॥੪॥
बूझै ब्रहमु अंतरि बिबेकु ॥४॥
Būjẖai barahm anṯar bibek. ||4||
Let the realization that God is within you be your discrimination. ||4||
|
ਆਚਾਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
आचारी नही जीतिआ जाइ ॥
Ācẖārī nahī jīṯi▫ā jā▫e.
Through ritual actions, God cannot be won over;
|
ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
पाठ पड़ै नही कीमति पाइ ॥
Pāṯẖ paṛai nahī kīmaṯ pā▫e.
by reciting sacred scriptures, His value cannot be estimated.
|
ਅਸਟ ਦਸੀ ਚਹੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
असट दसी चहु भेदु न पाइआ ॥
Asat ḏasī cẖahu bẖeḏ na pā▫i▫ā.
The eighteen Puranas and the four Vedas do not know His mystery.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੨੦॥
नानक सतिगुरि ब्रहमु दिखाइआ ॥५॥२०॥
Nānak saṯgur barahm ḏikẖā▫i▫ā. ||5||20||
O Nanak! The True Guru has shown me the Lord God. ||5||20||

|
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
सेवकु दासु भगतु जनु सोई ॥
Sevak ḏās bẖagaṯ jan so▫ī.
He alone is the selfless servant, slave and humble devotee,
|
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
ठाकुर का दासु गुरमुखि होई ॥
Ŧẖākur kā ḏās gurmukẖ ho▫ī.
who as Gurmukh, becomes the slave of his Lord and Master.
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
जिनि सिरि साजी तिनि फुनि गोई ॥
Jin sir sājī ṯin fun go▫ī.
He, who created the Universe, shall ultimately destroy it.
|
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
तिसु बिनु दूजा अवरु न कोई ॥१॥
Ŧis bin ḏūjā avar na ko▫ī. ||1||
Without Him, there is no other at all. ||1||
|
ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
साचु नामु गुर सबदि वीचारि ॥
Sācẖ nām gur sabaḏ vīcẖār.
Who reflects upon the True Name through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad,
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुरमुखि साचे साचै दरबारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gurmukẖ sācẖe sācẖai ḏarbār. ||1|| rahā▫o.
that Gurmukh is found to be true in the True Court. ||1||Pause||
|
ਸਚਾ ਅਰਜੁ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
सचा अरजु सची अरदासि ॥
Sacẖā araj sacẖī arḏās.
The true supplication, the true prayer -
|
ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
महली खसमु सुणे साबासि ॥
Mahlī kẖasam suṇe sābās.
within the Mansion of His Sublime Presence, the True Lord Master hears and applauds these.
|
ਸਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
सचै तखति बुलावै सोइ ॥
Sacẖai ṯakẖaṯ bulāvai so▫e.
He summons the truthful to His Heavenly Throne
|
ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
दे वडिआई करे सु होइ ॥२॥
Ḏe vadi▫ā▫ī kare so ho▫e. ||2||
and bestows glorious greatness upon them; that which He wills, comes to pass. ||2||
|
ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
तेरा ताणु तूहै दीबाणु ॥
Ŧerā ṯāṇ ṯūhai ḏībāṇ.
The Power is Yours; You are my only Support.
|
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
गुर का सबदु सचु नीसाणु ॥
Gur kā sabaḏ sacẖ nīsāṇ.
The Word of the Guru’s Shabad is my true password.
|
ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
मंने हुकमु सु परगटु जाइ ॥
Manne hukam so pargat jā▫e.
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, goes to Him openly.
|
ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
सचु नीसाणै ठाक न पाइ ॥३॥
Sacẖ nīsāṇai ṯẖāk na pā▫e. ||3||
With the password of truth, his way is not blocked. ||3||
|
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਵੇਦੁ ॥
पंडित पड़हि वखाणहि वेदु ॥
Pandiṯ paṛėh vakāṇėh veḏ.
The Pandit reads and expounds on the Vedas,
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
अंतरि वसतु न जाणहि भेदु ॥
Anṯar vasaṯ na jāṇėh bẖeḏ.
but he does not know the secret of the thing within himself.
|
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
गुर बिनु सोझी बूझ न होइ ॥
Gur bin sojẖī būjẖ na ho▫e.
Without the Guru, understanding and realization are not obtained;
|
ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
साचा रवि रहिआ प्रभु सोइ ॥४॥
Sācẖā rav rahi▫ā parabẖ so▫e. ||4||
but still God is True, pervading everywhere. ||4||
|
ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
किआ हउ आखा आखि वखाणी ॥
Ki▫ā ha▫o ākẖā ākẖ vakẖāṇī.
What should I say, or speak or describe?
|
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
तूं आपे जाणहि सरब विडाणी ॥
Ŧūʼn āpe jāṇėh sarab vidāṇī.
Only You Yourself know, O Lord of total wonder.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
नानक एको दरु दीबाणु ॥
Nānak eko ḏar ḏībāṇ.
Nanak takes the Support of the Door of the One God.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਹਾ ਗੁਦਰਾਣੁ ॥੫॥੨੧॥
गुरमुखि साचु तहा गुदराणु ॥५॥२१॥
Gurmukẖ sācẖ ṯahā guḏrāṇ. ||5||21||
There, at the True Door, the Gurmukhs sustain themselves. ||5||21||

ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
काची गागरि देह दुहेली उपजै बिनसै दुखु पाई ॥
Kācẖī gāgar ḏeh ḏuhelī upjai binsai ḏukẖ pā▫ī.
The clay pitcher of the body is miserable; it suffers in pain through birth and death.
|
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
इहु जगु सागरु दुतरु किउ तरीऐ बिनु हरि गुर पारि न पाई ॥१॥
Ih jag sāgar ḏuṯar ki▫o ṯarī▫ai bin har gur pār na pā▫ī. ||1||
How can this terrifying world-ocean be crossed over? Without the Lord - Guru, it cannot be crossed. ||1||
|
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਰੇ ॥
तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोई मेरे पिआरे तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोइ हरे ॥
Ŧujẖ bin avar na ko▫ī mere pi▫āre ṯujẖ bin avar na ko▫e hare.
Without You, there is no other at all, O my Beloved; without you, there is no other at all.

ਸਰਬੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰੂਪੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
सरबी रंगी रूपी तूंहै तिसु बखसे जिसु नदरि करे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Sarbī rangī rūpī ṯūʼnhai ṯis bakẖse jis naḏar kare. ||1|| rahā▫o.
You are in all colors and forms; he alone is forgiven, upon whom You bestow Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਸੁ ਬੁਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਣ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਰੀ ॥
सासु बुरी घरि वासु न देवै पिर सिउ मिलण न देइ बुरी ॥
Sās burī gẖar vās na ḏevai pir si▫o milaṇ na ḏe▫e burī.
Maya, my mother-in-law, is evil; she does not let me live in my own home. The vicious one does not let me meet with my Husband Lord.

ਸਖੀ ਸਾਜਨੀ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੨॥
सखी साजनी के हउ चरन सरेवउ हरि गुर किरपा ते नदरि धरी ॥२॥
Sakẖī sājnī ke ha▫o cẖaran sareva▫o har gur kirpā ṯe naḏar ḏẖarī. ||2||
I serve at the feet of my companions and friends; the Lord has showered me with His Mercy, through Guru’s Grace. ||2||

ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤੁਮ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
आपु बीचारि मारि मनु देखिआ तुम सा मीतु न अवरु कोई ॥
Āp bīcẖār mār man ḏekẖi▫ā ṯum sā mīṯ na avar ko▫ī.
Reflecting upon myself, and conquering my mind, I have seen that there is no other friend like You.
