ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥
Anik jaṯan kar ṯarisan nā ḏẖarāpai.
You try all sorts of things, but your thirst is still not satisfied.
|
ਭੇਖ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
Bẖekẖ anek agan nahī bujẖai.
Wearing various religious robes, the fire is not extinguished.
|
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਹੀ ਸਿਝੈ ॥
Kot upāv ḏargėh nahī sijẖai.
Even making millions of efforts, you shall not be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
|
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
Cẖẖūtas nāhī ūbẖ pa▫i▫āl.
You cannot escape to the heavens, or to the nether regions,
|
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
Mohi bi▫āpahi mā▫i▫ā jāl.
if you are entangled in emotional attachment and the net of Maya.
|
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਜਮੁ ਡਾਨੈ ॥
Avar karṯūṯ saglī jam dānai.
All other efforts are punished by the Messenger of Death,
|
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
Govinḏ bẖajan bin ṯil nahī mānai.
which accepts nothing at all, except meditation on the Lord of the Universe.
|
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Har kā nām japaṯ ḏukẖ jā▫e.
Chanting the Name of the Lord, sorrow is dispelled.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
Nānak bolai sahj subẖā▫e. ||4||
O Nanak, chant it with intuitive ease. ||4||
|
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
Cẖār paḏārath je ko māgai.
One who prays for the four cardinal blessings
|
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ janā kī sevā lāgai.
should commit himself to the service of the Saints.
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
Je ko āpunā ḏūkẖ mitāvai.
If you wish to erase your sorrows,
|
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Har har nām riḏai saḏ gāvai.
sing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within your heart.
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ॥
Je ko apunī sobẖā lorai.
If you long for honor for yourself,
|
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ ॥
Sāḏẖsang ih ha▫umai cẖẖorai.
then renounce your ego in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
Je ko janam maraṇ ṯe darai.
If you fear the cycle of birth and death,
|
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ janā kī sarnī parai.
then seek the Sanctuary of the Holy.
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
Jis jan ka▫o parabẖ ḏaras pi▫āsā.
Those who thirst for the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan -
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
Nānak ṯā kai bal bal jāsā. ||5||
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ||5||
|
ਸਗਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal purakẖ mėh purakẖ parḏẖān.
Among all persons, the supreme person is the one
|
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Sāḏẖsang jā kā mitai abẖimān.
who gives up his egotistical pride in the Company of the Holy.
|
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
Āpas ka▫o jo jāṇai nīcẖā.
One who sees himself as lowly,
|
ਸੋਊ ਗਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
So▫ū ganī▫ai sabẖ ṯe ūcẖā.
shall be accounted as the highest of all.
|
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
Jā kā man ho▫e sagal kī rīnā.
One whose mind is the dust of all,
|
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
Har har nām ṯin gẖat gẖat cẖīnā.
recognizes the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in each and every heart.

ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਨਾ ॥
Man apune ṯe burā mitānā.
One who eradicates cruelty from within his own mind,
|
ਪੇਖੈ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ॥
Pekẖai sagal sarisat sājnā.
looks upon all the world as his friend.
|
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਜਨ ਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
Sūkẖ ḏūkẖ jan sam ḏaristeṯā.
One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same,
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪਾ ॥੬॥
Nānak pāp punn nahī lepā. ||6||
O Nanak, is not affected by sin or virtue. ||6||
|
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕਉ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
Nirḏẖan ka▫o ḏẖan ṯero nā▫o.
To the poor, Your Name is wealth.
|
ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
Nithāve ka▫o nā▫o ṯerā thā▫o.
To the homeless, Your Name is home.
|
ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Nimāne ka▫o parabẖ ṯero mān.
To the dishonored, You, O God, are honor.
|
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal gẖatā ka▫o ḏevhu ḏān.
To all, You are the Giver of gifts.
|
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
Karan karāvanhār su▫āmī.
O Creator Lord, Cause of causes, O Lord and Master,
|
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Sagal gẖatā ke anṯarjāmī.
Inner-knower, Searcher of all hearts:
|
ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
Apnī gaṯ miṯ jānhu āpe.
You alone know Your own condition and state.
|
ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
Āpan sang āp parabẖ rāṯe.
You Yourself, God, are imbued with Yourself.
|
ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
Ŧumĥrī usṯaṯ ṯum ṯe ho▫e.
You alone can celebrate Your Praises.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
Nānak avar na jānas ko▫e. ||7||
O Nanak, no one else knows. ||7||
|
ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਧਰਮੁ ॥
Sarab ḏẖaram mėh saresat ḏẖaram.
Of all religions, the best religion
|
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
Har ko nām jap nirmal karam.
is to chant the Name of the Lord and maintain pure conduct.
|
ਸਗਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sagal kir▫ā mėh ūṯam kiri▫ā.
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual
|
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sāḏẖsang ḏurmaṯ mal hiri▫ā.
is to erase the filth of the dirty mind in the Company of the Holy.
|
ਸਗਲ ਉਦਮ ਮਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
Sagal uḏam mėh uḏam bẖalā.
Of all efforts, the best effort
|
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਸਦਾ ॥
Har kā nām japahu jī▫a saḏā.
is to chant the Name of the Lord in the heart, forever.
|
ਸਗਲ ਬਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
Sagal bānī mėh amriṯ bānī.
Of all speech, the most ambrosial speech
|
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
Har ko jas sun rasan bakẖānī.
is to hear the Lord's Praise and chant it with the tongue.
|
ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਊਤਮ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal thān ṯe oh ūṯam thān.
Of all places, the most sublime place,
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
Nānak jih gẖat vasai har nām. ||8||3||
O Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||

ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰ ਇਆਨਿਆ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Nirgunī▫ār i▫āni▫ā so parabẖ saḏā samāl.
You worthless, ignorant fool - dwell upon God forever.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਰਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥
Jin kī▫ā ṯis cẖīṯ rakẖ Nānak nibhī nāl. ||1||
Cherish in your consciousness the One who created you; O Nanak, He alone shall go along with you. ||1||

ਰਮਈਆ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਚੇਤਿ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥
Rama▫ī▫ā ke gun cẖeṯ parānī.
Think of the Glory of the All-pervading Lord, O mortal;

ਕਵਨ ਮੂਲ ਤੇ ਕਵਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨੀ ॥
Kavan mūl ṯe kavan ḏaristānī.
what is your origin, and what is your appearance?
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ ॥
Jin ṯūʼn sāj savār sīgāri▫ā.
He who fashioned, adorned and decorated you, -
|
ਗਰਭ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥
Garabẖ agan mėh jinėh ubāri▫ā.
in the fire of the womb, He preserved you.
|
ਬਾਰ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੈ ਦੂਧ ॥
Bār bivasthā ṯujẖėh pi▫ārai ḏūḏẖ.
In your infancy, He gave you milk to drink.
|
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਸੂਧ ॥
Bẖar joban bẖojan sukẖ sūḏẖ.
In the flower of your youth, He gave you food, pleasure and understanding.
|
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਾਕ ਸੈਨ ॥
Biraḏẖ bẖa▫i▫ā ūpar sāk sain.
As you grow old, family and friends are there,
