ਸਰਮ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਸਸੁਰ ਭਏ
सरम सुरति दुइ ससुर भए ॥
Saram suraṯ ḏu▫e sasur bẖa▫e.
Modesty, humility and intuitive understanding are my mother-in-law and father-in-law;

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਲਏ ॥੨॥
करणी कामणि करि मन लए ॥२॥
Karṇī kāmaṇ kar man la▫e. ||2||
I have made good deeds my spouse. ||2||

ਸਾਹਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ
साहा संजोगु वीआहु विजोगु ॥
Sāhā sanjog vī▫āhu vijog.
Union with the Holy is my wedding date, and separation from the world is my marriage.

ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥੩॥
सचु संतति कहु नानक जोगु ॥३॥३॥
Sacẖ sanṯaṯ kaho Nānak jog. ||3||3||
Says Nanak, Truth is the child born of this Union. ||3||3||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ
पउणै पाणी अगनी का मेलु ॥
Pa▫uṇai pāṇī agnī kā mel.
The union of air, water and fire -

ਚੰਚਲ ਚਪਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ
चंचल चपल बुधि का खेलु ॥
Cẖancẖal cẖapal buḏẖ kā kẖel.
the body is the play-thing of the fickle and unsteady intellect.

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ
नउ दरवाजे दसवा दुआरु ॥
Na▫o ḏarvāje ḏasvā ḏu▫ār.
It has nine doors, and then there is the Tenth Gate.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
बुझु रे गिआनी एहु बीचारु ॥१॥
Bujẖ re gi▫ānī ehu bīcẖār. ||1||
Reflect upon this and understand it, O wise one. ||1||

ਕਥਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਨਤਾ ਸੋਈ
कथता बकता सुनता सोई ॥
Kathṯā bakṯā sunṯā so▫ī.
The Lord is the One who speaks, teaches and listens.

ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
आपु बीचारे सु गिआनी होई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Āp bīcẖāre so gi▫ānī ho▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
One who contemplates his own self is truly wise. ||1||Pause||

ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਪਉਣੁ
देही माटी बोलै पउणु ॥
Ḏehī mātī bolai pa▫uṇ.
The body is dust; the wind speaks through it.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਆ ਹੈ ਕਉਣੁ
बुझु रे गिआनी मूआ है कउणु ॥
Bujẖ re gi▫ānī mū▫ā hai ka▫uṇ.
Understand, O wise one, who has died.

ਮੂਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ
मूई सुरति बादु अहंकारु ॥
Mū▫ī suraṯ bāḏ ahaʼnkār.
Awareness, conflict and ego have died,

ਓਹੁ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
ओहु न मूआ जो देखणहारु ॥२॥
Oh na mū▫ā jo ḏekẖaṇhār. ||2||
but the One who sees does not die. ||2||

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ
जै कारणि तटि तीरथ जाही ॥
Jai kāraṇ ṯat ṯirath jāhī.
For the sake of it, you journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers;

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ
रतन पदारथ घट ही माही ॥
Raṯan paḏārath gẖat hī māhī.
but this priceless jewel is within your own heart.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ
पड़ि पड़ि पंडितु बादु वखाणै ॥
Paṛ paṛ pandiṯ bāḏ vakẖāṇai.
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read endlessly; they stir up arguments and controversies,

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
भीतरि होदी वसतु न जाणै ॥३॥
Bẖīṯar hoḏī vasaṯ na jāṇai. ||3||
but they do not know the secret deep within. ||3||

ਹਉ ਮੂਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੁਈ ਬਲਾਇ
हउ न मूआ मेरी मुई बलाइ ॥
Ha▫o na mū▫ā merī mu▫ī balā▫e.
I have not died - that evil nature within me has died.

ਓਹੁ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ
ओहु न मूआ जो रहिआ समाइ ॥
Oh na mū▫ā jo rahi▫ā samā▫e.
The One who is pervading everywhere does not die.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ
कहु नानक गुरि ब्रहमु दिखाइआ ॥
Kaho Nānak gur barahm ḏikẖā▫i▫ā.
Says Nanak, the Guru has revealed God to me,

ਮਰਤਾ ਜਾਤਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥
मरता जाता नदरि न आइआ ॥४॥४॥
Marṯā jāṯā naḏar na ā▫i▫ā. ||4||4||
and now I see that there is no such thing as birth or death. ||4||4||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ਦਖਣੀ
गउड़ी महला १ दखणी ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1 ḏakẖ▫ṇī.
Gauree, First Mehl, Dakhanee:

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਾਉ
सुणि सुणि बूझै मानै नाउ ॥
Suṇ suṇ būjẖai mānai nā▫o.
The one who listens and hears, who understands and believes in the Name,

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ
ता कै सद बलिहारै जाउ ॥
Ŧā kai saḏ balihārai jā▫o.
I am forever a sacrifice to him.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਠਉਰ ਠਾਉ
आपि भुलाए ठउर न ठाउ ॥
Āp bẖulā▫e ṯẖa▫ur na ṯẖā▫o.
When the Lord Himself leads us astray, there is no other place of rest for us to find.

ਤੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੧॥
तूं समझावहि मेलि मिलाउ ॥१॥
Ŧūʼn samjẖāvahi mel milā▫o. ||1||
You impart understanding, and You unite us in Your Union. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਮੈ ਨਾਲਿ
नामु मिलै चलै मै नालि ॥
Nām milai cẖalai mai nāl.
I obtain the Naam, which shall go along with me in the end.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
बिनु नावै बाधी सभ कालि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Bin nāvai bāḏẖī sabẖ kāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Without the Name, all are held in the grip of Death. ||1||Pause||

ਖੇਤੀ ਵਣਜੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਓਟ
खेती वणजु नावै की ओट ॥
Kẖeṯī vaṇaj nāvai kī ot.
My farming and my trading are by the Support of the Name.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜ ਕੀ ਪੋਟ
पापु पुंनु बीज की पोट ॥
Pāp punn bīj kī pot.
The seeds of sin and virtue are bound together.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਚੋਟ
कामु क्रोधु जीअ महि चोट ॥
Kām kroḏẖ jī▫a mėh cẖot.
Sexual desire and anger are the wounds of the soul.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟ ॥੨॥
नामु विसारि चले मनि खोट ॥२॥
Nām visār cẖale man kẖot. ||2||
The evil-minded ones forget the Naam, and then depart. ||2||

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੀਖ
साचे गुर की साची सीख ॥
Sācẖe gur kī sācẖī sīkẖ.
True are the Teachings of the True Guru.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਖ
तनु मनु सीतलु साचु परीख ॥
Ŧan man sīṯal sācẖ parīkẖ.
The body and mind are cooled and soothed, by the touchstone of Truth.

ਜਲ ਪੁਰਾਇਨਿ ਰਸ ਕਮਲ ਪਰੀਖ
जल पुराइनि रस कमल परीख ॥
Jal purā▫in ras kamal parīkẖ.
This is the true mark of wisdom: that one remains detached, like the water-lily, or the lotus upon the water.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਈਖ ॥੩॥
सबदि रते मीठे रस ईख ॥३॥
Sabaḏ raṯe mīṯẖe ras īkẖ. ||3||
Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, one becomes sweet, like the juice of the sugar cane. ||3||

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੜਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ
हुकमि संजोगी गड़ि दस दुआर ॥
Hukam sanjogī gaṛ ḏas ḏu▫ār.
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the castle of the body has ten gates.

ਪੰਚ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ
पंच वसहि मिलि जोति अपार ॥
Pancẖ vasėh mil joṯ apār.
The five passions dwell there, together with the Divine Light of the Infinite.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰ
आपि तुलै आपे वणजार ॥
Āp ṯulai āpe vaṇjār.
The Lord Himself is the merchandise, and He Himself is the trader.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥
नानक नामि सवारणहार ॥४॥५॥
Nānak nām savāraṇhār. ||4||5||
O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, we are adorned and rejuvenated. ||4||5||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਜਾਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ
जातो जाइ कहा ते आवै ॥
Jāṯo jā▫e kahā ṯe āvai.
How can we know where we came from?

ਕਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ
कह उपजै कह जाइ समावै ॥
Kah upjai kah jā▫e samāvai.
Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge?

ਕਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਵੈ
किउ बाधिओ किउ मुकती पावै ॥
Ki▫o bāḏẖi▫o ki▫o mukṯī pāvai.
How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation?

ਕਿਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
किउ अबिनासी सहजि समावै ॥१॥
Ki▫o abẖināsī sahj samāvai. ||1||
How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Lord? ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ
नामु रिदै अम्रितु मुखि नामु ॥
Nām riḏai amriṯ mukẖ nām.
With the Naam in the heart and the Ambrosial Naam on our lips,

ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
नरहर नामु नरहर निहकामु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Narhar nām narhar nihkām. ||1|| rahā▫o.
through the Name of the Lord, we rise above desire, like the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਇ
सहजे आवै सहजे जाइ ॥
Sėhje āvai sėhje jā▫e.
With intuitive ease we come, and with intuitive ease we depart.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ
मन ते उपजै मन माहि समाइ ॥
Man ṯe upjai man māhi samā▫e.
From the mind we originate, and into the mind we are absorbed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਪਾਇ
गुरमुखि मुकतो बंधु न पाइ ॥
Gurmukẖ mukṯo banḏẖ na pā▫e.
As Gurmukh, we are liberated, and are not bound.

ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
सबदु बीचारि छुटै हरि नाइ ॥२॥
Sabaḏ bīcẖār cẖẖutai har nā▫e. ||2||
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, we are emancipated through the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਤਰਵਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁ
तरवर पंखी बहु निसि बासु ॥
Ŧarvar pankẖī baho nis bās.
At night, lots of birds settle on the tree.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ
सुख दुखीआ मनि मोह विणासु ॥
Sukẖ ḏukẖī▫ā man moh viṇās.
Some are happy, and some are sad. Caught in the desires of the mind, they perish.

ਸਾਝ ਬਿਹਾਗ ਤਕਹਿ ਆਗਾਸੁ
साझ बिहाग तकहि आगासु ॥
Sājẖ bihāg ṯakėh āgās.
And when the life-night comes to its end, then they look to the sky.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੩॥
दह दिसि धावहि करमि लिखिआसु ॥३॥
Ḏah ḏis ḏẖāvėh karam likẖi▫ās. ||3||
They fly away in all ten directions, according to their pre-ordained destiny. ||3||
