ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਰੇ ॥ बिमल मझारि बससि निरमल जल पदमनि जावल रे ॥ Bimal majẖār basas nirmal jal paḏman jāval re. In the pure, immaculate waters, both the lotus and the slimy scum are found. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਜਲ ਰਸ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ पदमनि जावल जल रस संगति संगि दोख नही रे ॥१॥ Paḏman jāval jal ras sangaṯ sang ḏokẖ nahī re. ||1|| The lotus flower is with the scum and the water, but it remains untouched by any pollution. ||1|| ਦਾਦਰ ਤੂ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ दादर तू कबहि न जानसि रे ॥ Ḏāḏar ṯū kabėh na jānas re. You frog, you will never understand. ਭਖਸਿ ਸਿਬਾਲੁ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਖਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ भखसि सिबालु बससि निरमल जल अम्रितु न लखसि रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bẖakẖas sibāl basas nirmal jal amriṯ na lakẖas re. ||1|| rahā▫o. You eat the dirt, while you dwell in the immaculate waters. You know nothing of the ambrosial nectar there. ||1||Pause|| ਬਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਤ ਨ ਵਸਤ ਅਲੀਅਲ ਮੇਰ ਚਚਾ ਗੁਨ ਰੇ ॥ बसु जल नित न वसत अलीअल मेर चचा गुन रे ॥ Bas jal niṯ na vasaṯ alī▫al mer cẖacẖā gun re. You dwell continually in the water; the bumble bee does not dwell there, but it is intoxicated with its fragrance from afar. ਚੰਦ ਕੁਮੁਦਨੀ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਸਸਿ ਅਨਭਉ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥ चंद कुमुदनी दूरहु निवससि अनभउ कारनि रे ॥२॥ Cẖanḏ kumuḏanī ḏẖūrahu nivsas anbẖa▫o kāran re. ||2|| Intuitively sensing the moon in the distance, the lotus bows its head. ||2|| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਖੰਡੁ ਦੂਧਿ ਮਧੁ ਸੰਚਸਿ ਤੂ ਬਨ ਚਾਤੁਰ ਰੇ ॥ अम्रित खंडु दूधि मधु संचसि तू बन चातुर रे ॥ Amriṯ kẖand ḏūḏẖ maḏẖ sancẖas ṯū ban cẖāṯur re. The realms of nectar are irrigated with milk and honey; you think you are clever to live in the water. ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਪਿਸਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੩॥ अपना आपु तू कबहु न छोडसि पिसन प्रीति जिउ रे ॥३॥ Apnā āp ṯū kabahu na cẖẖodas pisan parīṯ ji▫o re. ||3|| You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the love of the flea for blood. ||3|| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਜਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਗਮ ਸਾਸ ਸੁਨੇ ॥ पंडित संगि वसहि जन मूरख आगम सास सुने ॥ Pandiṯ sang vasėh jan mūrakẖ āgam sās sune. The fool may live with the Pandit, the religious scholar, and listen to the Vedas and the Shaastras. ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੪॥ अपना आपु तू कबहु न छोडसि सुआन पूछि जिउ रे ॥४॥ Apnā āp ṯū kabahu na cẖẖodas su▫ān pūcẖẖ ji▫o re. ||4|| You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the crooked tail of the dog. ||4|| ਇਕਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਰੇ ॥ इकि पाखंडी नामि न राचहि इकि हरि हरि चरणी रे ॥ Ik pākẖandī nām na rācẖėh ik har har cẖarṇī re. Some are hypocrites; they do not merge with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Some are absorbed in the Feet of the Lord, Har, Har. ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਰੇ ॥੫॥੪॥ पूरबि लिखिआ पावसि नानक रसना नामु जपि रे ॥५॥४॥ Pūrab likẖi▫ā pāvas Nānak rasnā nām jap re. ||5||4|| The mortals obtain what they are predestined to receive; O Nanak, with your tongue, chant the Naam. ||5||4||
