ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਲੇਖ ਪਏ ॥ करणी कागदु मनु मसवाणी बुरा भला दुइ लेख पए ॥ Karṇī kāgaḏ man masvāṇī burā bẖalā ḏu▫e lekẖ pa▫e. Actions are the paper, and the mind is the ink; good and bad are both recorded upon it. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ घरु १ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 1 gẖar 1. Maaroo, First Mehl, First House: ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਲੀਐ ਤਉ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ जिउ जिउ किरतु चलाए तिउ चलीऐ तउ गुण नाही अंतु हरे ॥१॥ Ji▫o ji▫o kiraṯ cẖalā▫e ṯi▫o cẖalī▫ai ṯa▫o guṇ nāhī anṯ hare. ||1|| As their past actions drive them, so are mortals driven. There is no end to Your Glorious Virtues, Lord. ||1|| ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਵਰਿਆ ॥ चित चेतसि की नही बावरिआ ॥ Cẖiṯ cẖeṯas kī nahī bāvri▫ā. Why do you not keep Him in your consciousness, you mad man? ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ हरि बिसरत तेरे गुण गलिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Har bisraṯ ṯere guṇ gali▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o. Forgetting the Lord, your own virtues shall rot away. ||1||Pause|| ਜਾਲੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਾਲੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਹੂਆ ਜੇਤੀ ਘੜੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੇਤੀ ॥ जाली रैनि जालु दिनु हूआ जेती घड़ी फाही तेती ॥ Jālī rain jāl ḏin hū▫ā jeṯī gẖaṛī fāhī ṯeṯī. The night is a net, and the day is a net; there are as many traps as there are moments. ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਕਵਨ ਗੁਣੀ ॥੨॥ रसि रसि चोग चुगहि नित फासहि छूटसि मूड़े कवन गुणी ॥२॥ Ras ras cẖog cẖugėh niṯ fāsėh cẖẖūtas mūṛe kavan guṇī. ||2|| With relish and delight, you continually bite at the bait; you are trapped, you fool - how will you ever escape? ||2|| ਕਾਇਆ ਆਰਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੀ ॥ काइआ आरणु मनु विचि लोहा पंच अगनि तितु लागि रही ॥ Kā▫i▫ā āraṇ man vicẖ lohā pancẖ agan ṯiṯ lāg rahī. The body is a furnace, and the mind is the iron within it; the five fires are heating it. ਕੋਇਲੇ ਪਾਪ ਪੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਭਈ ॥੩॥ कोइले पाप पड़े तिसु ऊपरि मनु जलिआ संन्ही चिंत भई ॥३॥ Ko▫ile pāp paṛe ṯis ūpar man jali▫ā sanĥī cẖinṯ bẖa▫ī. ||3|| Sin is the charcoal placed upon it, which burns the mind; the tongs are anxiety and worry. ||3|| ਭਇਆ ਮਨੂਰੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਨੇਹਾ ॥ भइआ मनूरु कंचनु फिरि होवै जे गुरु मिलै तिनेहा ॥ Bẖa▫i▫ā manūr kancẖan fir hovai je gur milai ṯinehā. What was turned to slag is again transformed into gold, if one meets with the Guru. ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਓਹੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਟਸਿ ਦੇਹਾ ॥੪॥੩॥ एकु नामु अम्रितु ओहु देवै तउ नानक त्रिसटसि देहा ॥४॥३॥ Ėk nām amriṯ oh ḏevai ṯa▫o Nānak ṯaristas ḏehā. ||4||3|| He blesses the mortal with the Ambrosial Name of the One Lord, and then, O Nanak, the body is held steady. ||4||3|| ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਜਲ ਰਸ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ पदमनि जावल जल रस संगति संगि दोख नही रे ॥१॥ Paḏman jāval jal ras sangaṯ sang ḏokẖ nahī re. ||1|| The lotus flower is with the scum and the water, but it remains untouched by any pollution. ||1|| ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਰੇ ॥ बिमल मझारि बससि निरमल जल पदमनि जावल रे ॥ Bimal majẖār basas nirmal jal paḏman jāval re. In the pure, immaculate waters, both the lotus and the slimy scum are found.
