ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕੀ ॥ सोरठि महला १ तितुकी ॥ Soratʰ mėhlaa 1 ṫiṫukee. Sorat’h, First Mehl, Ti-Tukas: ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬੰਧਕਾਰੀ ॥ आसा मनसा बंधनी भाई करम धरम बंधकारी ॥ Aasaa mansaa banḋʰnee bʰaa▫ee karam ḋʰaram banḋʰkaaree. Hope and desire are entrapments, O Siblings of Destiny. Religious rituals and ceremonies are traps. ਪਾਪਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥ पापि पुंनि जगु जाइआ भाई बिनसै नामु विसारी ॥ Paap punn jag jaa▫i▫aa bʰaa▫ee binsæ naam visaaree. Because of good and bad deeds, one is born into the world, O Siblings of Destiny; forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he is ruined. ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਸਭੇ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ इह माइआ जगि मोहणी भाई करम सभे वेकारी ॥१॥ Ih maa▫i▫aa jag mohṇee bʰaa▫ee karam sabʰé vékaaree. ||1|| This Maya is the enticer of the world, O Siblings of Destiny; all such actions are corrupt. ||1|| ਸੁਣਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥ सुणि पंडित करमा कारी ॥ Suṇ pandiṫ karmaa kaaree. Listen, O ritualistic Pandit: ਜਿਤੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਸੁ ਆਤਮ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जितु करमि सुखु ऊपजै भाई सु आतम ततु बीचारी ॥ रहाउ ॥ Jiṫ karam sukʰ oopjæ bʰaa▫ee so aaṫam ṫaṫ beechaaree. Rahaa▫o. that religious ritual which produces happiness, O Siblings of Destiny, is contemplation of the essence of the soul. ||Pause|| ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਕੈ ਖੜੋ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥ सासतु बेदु बकै खड़ो भाई करम करहु संसारी ॥ Saasaṫ béḋ bakæ kʰaṛo bʰaa▫ee karam karahu sansaaree. You may stand and recite the Shastras and the Vedas, O Siblings of Destiny, but these are just worldly actions. ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਭਾਈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ पाखंडि मैलु न चूकई भाई अंतरि मैलु विकारी ॥ Pakʰand mæl na chook▫ee bʰaa▫ee anṫar mæl vikaaree. Filth cannot be washed away by hypocrisy, O Siblings of Destiny; the filth of corruption and sin is within you. ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਡੂਬੀ ਮਾਕੁਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਊਂਡੀ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ इन बिधि डूबी माकुरी भाई ऊंडी सिर कै भारी ॥२॥ In biḋʰ doobee maakuree bʰaa▫ee ooⁿdee sir kæ bʰaaree. ||2|| This is how the spider is destroyed, O Siblings of Destiny, by falling head-long in its own web. ||2|| ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ਭਾਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥ दुरमति घणी विगूती भाई दूजै भाइ खुआई ॥ Ḋurmaṫ gʰaṇee vigooṫee bʰaa▫ee ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é kʰu▫aa▫ee. So many are destroyed by their own evil-mindedness, O Siblings of Destiny; in the love of duality, they are ruined. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर नामु न पाईऐ भाई बिनु नामै भरमु न जाई ॥ Bin saṫgur naam na paa▫ee▫æ bʰaa▫ee bin naamæ bʰaram na jaa▫ee. Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Name, doubt does not depart. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੩॥ सतिगुरु सेवे ता सुखु पाए भाई आवणु जाणु रहाई ॥३॥ Saṫgur sévé ṫaa sukʰ paa▫é bʰaa▫ee aavaṇ jaaṇ rahaa▫ee. ||3|| If one serves the True Guru, then he obtains peace, O Siblings of Destiny; his comings and goings are ended. ||3|| ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ साचु सहजु गुर ते ऊपजै भाई मनु निरमलु साचि समाई ॥ Saach sahj gur ṫé oopjæ bʰaa▫ee man nirmal saach samaa▫ee. True celestial peace comes from the Guru, O Siblings of Destiny; the immaculate mind is absorbed into the True Lord. ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ गुरु सेवे सो बूझै भाई गुर बिनु मगु न पाई ॥ Gur sévé so boojʰæ bʰaa▫ee gur bin mag na paa▫ee. One who serves the Guru, understands, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Guru, the way is not found. ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੪॥ जिसु अंतरि लोभु कि करम कमावै भाई कूड़ु बोलि बिखु खाई ॥४॥ Jis anṫar lobʰ kė karam kamaavæ bʰaa▫ee kooṛ bol bikʰ kʰaa▫ee. ||4|| What can anyone do, with greed within? O Siblings of Destiny, by telling lies, they eat poison. ||4|| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਤਥੁ ॥ पंडित दही विलोईऐ भाई विचहु निकलै तथु ॥ Pandiṫ ḋahee vilo▫ee▫æ bʰaa▫ee vichahu niklæ ṫaṫʰ. O Pandit, by churning cream, butter is produced. ਜਲੁ ਮਥੀਐ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਏਹਾ ਵਥੁ ॥ जलु मथीऐ जलु देखीऐ भाई इहु जगु एहा वथु ॥ Jal maṫʰee▫æ jal ḋékʰee▫æ bʰaa▫ee ih jag éhaa vaṫʰ. By churning water, you shall only see water, O Siblings of Destiny; this world is like that. ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਅਲਖੁ ॥੫॥ गुर बिनु भरमि विगूचीऐ भाई घटि घटि देउ अलखु ॥५॥ Gur bin bʰaram vigoochee▫æ bʰaa▫ee gʰat gʰat ḋé▫o alakʰ. ||5|| Without the Guru, he is ruined by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; the unseen Divine Lord is in each and every heart. ||5|| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਗੋ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਾਧੋ ਮਾਇ ॥ इहु जगु तागो सूत को भाई दह दिस बाधो माइ ॥ Ih jag ṫaago sooṫ ko bʰaa▫ee ḋah ḋis baaḋʰo maa▫é. This world is like a thread of cotton, O Siblings of Destiny, which Maya has tied on all ten sides. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਾਠਿ ਨ ਛੂਟਈ ਭਾਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ बिनु गुर गाठि न छूटई भाई थाके करम कमाइ ॥ Bin gur gaatʰ na chʰoot▫ee bʰaa▫ee ṫʰaaké karam kamaa▫é. Without the Guru, the knots cannot be untied, O Siblings of Destiny; I am so tired of religious rituals. ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥ इहु जगु भरमि भुलाइआ भाई कहणा किछू न जाइ ॥६॥ Ih jag bʰaram bʰulaa▫i▫aa bʰaa▫ee kahṇaa kichʰoo na jaa▫é. ||6|| This world is deluded by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; no one can say anything about it. ||6|| ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਭੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਲੇਖੁ ॥ गुर मिलिऐ भउ मनि वसै भाई भै मरणा सचु लेखु ॥ Gur mili▫æ bʰa▫o man vasæ bʰaa▫ee bʰæ marṇaa sach lékʰ. Meeting with the Guru, the Fear of God comes to abide in the mind; to die in the Fear of God is one’s true destiny. ਮਜਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ मजनु दानु चंगिआईआ भाई दरगह नामु विसेखु ॥ Majan ḋaan chang▫aa▫ee▫aa bʰaa▫ee ḋargėh naam visékʰ. In the Court of the Lord, the Naam is far superior to ritualistic cleansing baths, charity and good deeds, O Siblings of Destiny. ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਭੇਖੁ ॥੭॥ गुरु अंकसु जिनि नामु द्रिड़ाइआ भाई मनि वसिआ चूका भेखु ॥७॥ Gur ankas jin naam driṛ▫aa▫i▫aa bʰaa▫ee man vasi▫aa chookaa bʰékʰ. ||7|| One who implants the Naam within himself, through the Guru’s halter - O Siblings of Destiny, the Lord dwells in his mind, and he is free of hypocrisy. ||7|| ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਾਟੁ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ इहु तनु हाटु सराफ को भाई वखरु नामु अपारु ॥ Ih ṫan haat saraaf ko bʰaa▫ee vakʰar naam apaar. This body is the jeweler’s shop, O Siblings of Destiny; the incomparable Naam is the merchandise. ਇਹੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਸੋ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ इहु वखरु वापारी सो द्रिड़ै भाई गुर सबदि करे वीचारु ॥ Ih vakʰar vaapaaree so ḋariṛæ bʰaa▫ee gur sabaḋ karé veechaar. The merchant secures this merchandise, O Siblings of Destiny, by contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥ धनु वापारी नानका भाई मेलि करे वापारु ॥८॥२॥ Ḋʰan vaapaaree naankaa bʰaa▫ee mél karé vaapaar. ||8||2|| Blessed is the merchant, O Nanak! Who meets the Guru, and engages in this trade. ||8||2||
