ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧੀਐ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ जपु तपु संजमु साधीऐ तीरथि कीचै वासु ॥ Jap ṫap sanjam saaḋʰee▫æ ṫiraṫʰ keechæ vaas. You may chant and meditate, practice austerities and self-restraint, and dwell at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ सिरीरागु महला १ ॥ Sireeraag mėhlaa 1. Siree Raag, First Mehl: ਜੇਹਾ ਰਾਧੇ ਤੇਹਾ ਲੁਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥ जेहा राधे तेहा लुणै बिनु गुण जनमु विणासु ॥१॥ Jéhaa raaḋʰé ṫéhaa luṇæ bin guṇ janam viṇaas. ||1|| As you plant, so shall you harvest. Without virtue, this human life passes away in vain. ||1|| ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਾਸੁ ॥ पुंन दान चंगिआईआ बिनु साचे किआ तासु ॥ Punn ḋaan chang▫aa▫ee▫aa bin saaché ki▫aa ṫaas. you may give donations to charity, and perform good deeds, but without the True One, what is the use of it all? ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ मुंधे गुण दासी सुखु होइ ॥ Munḋʰé guṇ ḋaasee sukʰ ho▫é. O young bride, be a slave to virtue, and you shall find peace. ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ अवगण तिआगि समाईऐ गुरमति पूरा सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Avgaṇ ṫi▫aag samaa▫ee▫æ gurmaṫ pooraa so▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o. Renouncing wrongful actions, following the Guru’s Teachings, you shall be absorbed into the Perfect One. ||1||Pause|| ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਆ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ विणु रासी वापारीआ तके कुंडा चारि ॥ viṇ raasee vapaaree▫aa ṫaké kundaa chaar. Without capital, the trader looks around in all four directions. ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਿ ॥ मूलु न बुझै आपणा वसतु रही घर बारि ॥ Mool na bujʰæ aapṇaa vasaṫ rahee gʰar baar. He does not understand his own origins; the merchandise remains within the door of his own house. ਵਿਣੁ ਵਖਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥ विणु वखर दुखु अगला कूड़ि मुठी कूड़िआरि ॥२॥ viṇ vakʰar ḋukʰ aglaa kooṛ mutʰee kooṛi▫aar. ||2|| Without this commodity, there is great pain. The false are ruined by falsehood. ||2|| ਲਾਹਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਉਤਨਾ ਪਰਖੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ लाहा अहिनिसि नउतना परखे रतनु वीचारि ॥ Laahaa ahinis na▫oṫanaa parkʰé raṫan veechaar. One who contemplates and appraises this Jewel day and night reaps new profits. ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰਿ ॥ वसतु लहै घरि आपणै चलै कारजु सारि ॥ vasaṫ lahæ gʰar aapṇæ chalæ kaaraj saar. He finds the merchandise within his own home, and departs after arranging his affairs. ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ वणजारिआ सिउ वणजु करि गुरमुखि ब्रहमु बीचारि ॥३॥ vaṇjaari▫aa si▫o vaṇaj kar gurmukʰ barahm beechaar. ||3|| So, trade with the true traders, and as Gurmukh, contemplate God. ||3|| ਸੰਤਾਂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ संतां संगति पाईऐ जे मेले मेलणहारु ॥ Sanṫaaⁿ sangaṫ paa▫ee▫æ jé mélé mélaṇhaar. In the Society of the Saints, He is found, if the Uniter unites us. ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ मिलिआ होइ न विछुड़ै जिसु अंतरि जोति अपार ॥ Mili▫aa ho▫é na vichʰuṛæ jis anṫar joṫ apaar. One whose heart is filled with His Infinite Light meets with Him, and shall never again be separated from Him. ਸਚੈ ਆਸਣਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰ ॥੪॥ सचै आसणि सचि रहै सचै प्रेम पिआर ॥४॥ Sachæ aasaṇ sach rahæ sachæ parém pi▫aar. ||4|| True is his position; he abides in Truth, with love and affection for the True One. ||4|| ਜਿਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥ जिनी आपु पछाणिआ घर महि महलु सुथाइ ॥ Jinee aap pachʰaaṇi▫aa gʰar mėh mahal suṫʰaa▫é. One who understands himself finds the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence within his own home. ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ सचे सेती रतिआ सचो पलै पाइ ॥ Saché séṫee raṫi▫aa sacho palæ paa▫é. Imbued with the True Lord, Truth is gathered in. ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਚੋ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੫॥ त्रिभवणि सो प्रभु जाणीऐ साचो साचै नाइ ॥५॥ Ṫaribʰavaṇ so parabʰ jaaṇee▫æ saacho saachæ naa▫é. ||5|| God is known throughout the three worlds. True is the Name of the True One. ||5|| ਸਾ ਧਨ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ सा धन खरी सुहावणी जिनि पिरु जाता संगि ॥ Saa ḋʰan kʰaree suhaavaṇee jin pir jaaṫaa sang. The wife who knows that her Husband Lord is always with her is very beautiful. ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ महली महलि बुलाईऐ सो पिरु रावे रंगि ॥ Mahlee mahal bulaa▫ee▫æ so pir raavé rang. The soul-bride is called to the Mansion of the His Presence, and her Husband Lord ravishes her with love. ਸਚਿ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਾ ਭਲੀ ਪਿਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੬॥ सचि सुहागणि सा भली पिरि मोही गुण संगि ॥६॥ Sach suhaagaṇ saa bʰalee pir mohee guṇ sang. ||6|| The happy soul-bride is true and good; she is fascinated by the Glories of her Husband Lord. ||6|| ਭੂਲੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਥਲਿ ਚੜਾ ਥਲਿ ਚੜਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ भूली भूली थलि चड़ा थलि चड़ि डूगरि जाउ ॥ Bʰoolee bʰoolee ṫʰal chaṛaa ṫʰal chaṛ doogar jaa▫o. Wandering around and making mistakes, I climb the plateau; having climbed the plateau, I go up the mountain. ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਭੂਲੀ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਉ ॥ बन महि भूली जे फिरा बिनु गुर बूझ न पाउ ॥ Ban mėh bʰoolee jé firaa bin gur boojʰ na paa▫o. But now I have lost my way, and I am wandering around in the forest; without the Guru, I do not understand. ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੀ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੭॥ नावहु भूली जे फिरा फिरि फिरि आवउ जाउ ॥७॥ Naavhu bʰoolee jé firaa fir fir aava▫o jaa▫o. ||7|| If I wander around forgetting God’s Name, I shall continue coming and going in reincarnation, over and over again. ||7|| ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਪਧਾਊਆ ਚਲੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਹੋਇ ॥ पुछहु जाइ पधाऊआ चले चाकर होइ ॥ Puchʰahu jaa▫é paḋʰaa▫oo▫aa chalé chaakar ho▫é. Go and ask the travelers, how to walk on the Path as His slave. ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ राजनु जाणहि आपणा दरि घरि ठाक न होइ ॥ Raajan jaaṇėh aapṇaa ḋar gʰar tʰaak na ho▫é. They know the Lord to be their King, and at the Door to His Home, their way is not blocked. ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੬॥ नानक एको रवि रहिआ दूजा अवरु न कोइ ॥८॥६॥ Naanak éko rav rahi▫aa ḋoojaa avar na ko▫é. ||8||6|| O Nanak! The One is pervading everywhere; there is no other at all. ||8||6||
