ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ आसा महला १ ॥ Āsā mėhlā 1. Aasaa, First Mehl: ਤਾਲ ਮਦੀਰੇ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਘਾਟ ॥ ताल मदीरे घट के घाट ॥ Ŧāl maḏīre gẖat ke gẖāt. The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells; ਨਾਰਦੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ नारदु नाचै कलि का भाउ ॥ Nāraḏ nācẖai kal kā bẖā▫o. Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga; ਦੋਲਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਜ ॥ दोलक दुनीआ वाजहि वाज ॥ Ḏolak ḏunī▫ā vājėh vāj. the drum of the world resounds with the beat. ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕਹ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥ जती सती कह राखहि पाउ ॥१॥ Jaṯī saṯī kah rākẖahi pā▫o. ||1|| where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1|| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥ नानक नाम विटहु कुरबाणु ॥ Nānak nām vitahu kurbāṇ. Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਅੰਧੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ अंधी दुनीआ साहिबु जाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Anḏẖī ḏunī▫ā sāhib jāṇ. ||1|| rahā▫o. The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1||Pause|| ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ गुरू पासहु फिरि चेला खाइ ॥ Gurū pāshu fir cẖelā kẖā▫e. The disciple feeds on the Guru; ਤਾਮਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥ तामि परीति वसै घरि आइ ॥ Ŧām parīṯ vasai gẖar ā▫e. out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home. ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣ ਖਾਣੁ ॥ जे सउ वर्हिआ जीवण खाणु ॥ Je sa▫o var▫hi▫ā jīvaṇ kẖāṇ. If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years, ਖਸਮ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੨॥ खसम पछाणै सो दिनु परवाणु ॥२॥ Kẖasam pacẖẖāṇai so ḏin parvāṇ. ||2|| that day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2|| ਦਰਸਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦਇਆ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ दरसनि देखिऐ दइआ न होइ ॥ Ḏarsan ḏekẖi▫ai ḏa▫i▫ā na ho▫e. Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused. ਲਏ ਦਿਤੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ लए दिते विणु रहै न कोइ ॥ La▫e ḏiṯe viṇ rahai na ko▫e. No one lives without give and take. ਰਾਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਹਥਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ राजा निआउ करे हथि होइ ॥ Rājā ni▫ā▫o kare hath ho▫e. The king administers justice only if his palm is greased. ਕਹੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥ कहै खुदाइ न मानै कोइ ॥३॥ Kahai kẖuḏā▫e na mānai ko▫e. ||3|| No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3|| ਮਾਣਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ माणस मूरति नानकु नामु ॥ Māṇas mūraṯ Nānak nām. O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only; ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥ गुर परसादि जाणै मिहमानु ॥ Gur parsāḏ jāṇai mihmān. By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world, |
