ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ करन करावन करनै जोगु ॥ Karan karāvan karnai jog. The Doer, the Cause of causes, is potent to do anything. ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ असटपदी ॥ Asatpaḏī. Ashtapadee: ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਨਹਾਰਾ ॥ खिन महि थापि उथापनहारा ॥ Kẖin mėh thāp uthāpanhārā. In an instant, He creates and destroys. ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਗੁ ॥ जो तिसु भावै सोई होगु ॥ Jo ṯis bẖāvai so▫ī hog. That which pleases Him, comes to pass. ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ ॥ अंतु नही किछु पारावारा ॥ Anṯ nahī kicẖẖ pārāvārā. He has no end or limitation. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਧਰ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥ हुकमे धारि अधर रहावै ॥ Hukme ḏẖār aḏẖar rahāvai. By His Order, He established the earth, and He maintains it unsupported. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ हुकमे उपजै हुकमि समावै ॥ Hukme upjai hukam samāvai. By His Order, the world was created; by His Order, it shall merge again into Him. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥ हुकमे ऊच नीच बिउहार ॥ Hukme ūcẖ nīcẖ bi▫uhār. By His Order, one's occupation is high or low. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਰੰਗ ਪਰਕਾਰ ॥ हुकमे अनिक रंग परकार ॥ Hukme anik rang parkār. By His Order, there are so many colors and forms. ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ करि करि देखै अपनी वडिआई ॥ Kar kar ḏekẖai apnī vadi▫ā▫ī. Having created the Creation, He beholds His own greatness. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ नानक सभ महि रहिआ समाई ॥१॥ Nānak sabẖ mėh rahi▫ā samā▫ī. ||1|| O Nanak, He is pervading in all. ||1|| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ प्रभ भावै मानुख गति पावै ॥ Parabẖ bẖāvai mānukẖ gaṯ pāvai. If it pleases God, one attains salvation. ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਥਰ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥ प्रभ भावै ता पाथर तरावै ॥ Parabẖ bẖāvai ṯā pāthar ṯarāvai. If it pleases God, then even stones can swim. ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਸ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੈ ॥ प्रभ भावै बिनु सास ते राखै ॥ Parabẖ bẖāvai bin sās ṯe rākẖai. If it pleases God, the body is preserved, even without the breath of life. ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਭਾਖੈ ॥ प्रभ भावै ता हरि गुण भाखै ॥ Parabẖ bẖāvai ṯā har guṇ bẖākẖai. If it pleases God, then one chants the Lord's Glorious Praises. ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ दुहा सिरिआ का आपि सुआमी ॥ Ḏuhā siri▫ā kā āp su▫āmī. He Himself is the Master of both worlds. ਆਪਿ ਕਰੈ ਆਪਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥ आपि करै आपन बीचारै ॥ Āp karai āpan bīcẖārai. He Himself acts, and He Himself contemplates. ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥ प्रभ भावै ता पतित उधारै ॥ Parabẖ bẖāvai ṯā paṯiṯ uḏẖārai. If it pleases God, then even sinners are saved. ਖੇਲੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ खेलै बिगसै अंतरजामी ॥ Kẖelai bigsai anṯarjāmī. He plays and He enjoys; He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥ जो भावै सो कार करावै ॥ Jo bẖāvai so kār karāvai. As He wills, He causes actions to be done. ਨਾਨਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥ नानक द्रिसटी अवरु न आवै ॥२॥ Nānak ḏaristī avar na āvai. ||2|| Nanak sees no other than Him. ||2|| ਕਹੁ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਆਵੈ ॥ कहु मानुख ते किआ होइ आवै ॥ Kaho mānukẖ ṯe ki▫ā ho▫e āvai. Tell me - what can a mere mortal do? ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥ जो तिसु भावै सोई करावै ॥ Jo ṯis bẖāvai so▫ī karāvai. Whatever pleases God is what He causes us to do. ਇਸ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੇਇ ॥ इस कै हाथि होइ ता सभु किछु लेइ ॥ Is kai hāth ho▫e ṯā sabẖ kicẖẖ le▫e. If it were in our hands, we would grab up everything. ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ जो तिसु भावै सोई करेइ ॥ Jo ṯis bẖāvai so▫ī kare▫i. Whatever pleases God - that is what He does. ਅਨਜਾਨਤ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਚੈ ॥ अनजानत बिखिआ महि रचै ॥ Anjānaṯ bikẖi▫ā mėh racẖai. Through ignorance, people are engrossed in corruption. ਜੇ ਜਾਨਤ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਬਚੈ ॥ जे जानत आपन आप बचै ॥ Je jānaṯ āpan āp bacẖai. If they knew better, they would save themselves. ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ भरमे भूला दह दिसि धावै ॥ Bẖarme bẖūlā ḏah ḏis ḏẖāvai. Deluded by doubt, they wander around in the ten directions. ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ निमख माहि चारि कुंट फिरि आवै ॥ Nimakẖ māhi cẖār kunt fir āvai. In an instant, their minds go around the four corners of the world and come back again. ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥ करि किरपा जिसु अपनी भगति देइ ॥ Kar kirpā jis apnī bẖagaṯ ḏe▫e. Those whom the Lord mercifully blesses with His devotional worship - ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੇਇ ॥੩॥ नानक ते जन नामि मिलेइ ॥३॥ Nānak ṯe jan nām mile▫e. ||3|| O Nanak, they are absorbed into the Naam. ||3|| ਜਾ ਕਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ जा का द्रिसटि कछू न आवै ॥ Jā kā ḏarisat kacẖẖū na āvai. Even one who has never been seen at all, ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਨੀਚ ਕੀਟ ਕਉ ਰਾਜ ॥ खिन महि नीच कीट कउ राज ॥ Kẖin mėh nīcẖ kīt ka▫o rāj. In an instant, the lowly worm is transformed into a king. ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥ पारब्रहम गरीब निवाज ॥ Pārbarahm garīb nivāj. The Supreme Lord God is the Protector of the humble. ਤਿਸੁ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵੈ ॥ तिसु ततकाल दह दिस प्रगटावै ॥ Ŧis ṯaṯkāl ḏah ḏis paragtāvai. becomes instantly famous in the ten directions. ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰੈ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥ जा कउ अपुनी करै बखसीस ॥ Jā ka▫o apunī karai bakẖsīs. And that one upon whom He bestows His blessings - ਤਾ ਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਨ ਗਨੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥ ता का लेखा न गनै जगदीस ॥ Ŧā kā lekẖā na ganai jagḏīs. the Lord of the world does not hold him to his account. ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ जीउ पिंडु सभ तिस की रासि ॥ Jī▫o pind sabẖ ṯis kī rās. Soul and body are all His property. ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥ घटि घटि पूरन ब्रहम प्रगास ॥ Gẖat gẖat pūran barahm pargās. Each and every heart is illuminated by the Perfect Lord God. ਅਪਨੀ ਬਣਤ ਆਪਿ ਬਨਾਈ ॥ अपनी बणत आपि बनाई ॥ Apnī baṇaṯ āp banā▫ī. He Himself fashioned His own handiwork. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਡਾਈ ॥੪॥ नानक जीवै देखि बडाई ॥४॥ Nānak jīvai ḏekẖ badā▫ī. ||4|| Nanak lives by beholding His greatness. ||4|| ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਸੁ ਹਾਥ ॥ इस का बलु नाही इसु हाथ ॥ Is kā bal nāhī is hāth. There is no power in the hands of mortal beings; ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਨਾਥ ॥ करन करावन सरब को नाथ ॥ Karan karāvan sarab ko nāth. the Doer, the Cause of causes is the Lord of all. ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਜੀਉ ॥ आगिआकारी बपुरा जीउ ॥ Āgi▫ākārī bapurā jī▫o. The helpless beings are subject to His Command. ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਥੀਉ ॥ जो तिसु भावै सोई फुनि थीउ ॥ Jo ṯis bẖāvai so▫ī fun thī▫o. That which pleases Him, ultimately comes to pass. ਕਬਹੂ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੈ ॥ कबहू ऊच नीच महि बसै ॥ Kabhū ūcẖ nīcẖ mėh basai. Sometimes, they abide in exaltation; sometimes, they are depressed. ਕਬਹੂ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਸੈ ॥ कबहू सोग हरख रंगि हसै ॥ Kabhū sog harakẖ rang hasai. Sometimes, they are sad, and sometimes they laugh with joy and delight. ਕਬਹੂ ਬੇਤਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ कबहू बेता ब्रहम बीचार ॥ Kabhū beṯā barahm bīcẖār. Sometimes, they know the contemplation of God. ਕਬਹੂ ਨਿੰਦ ਚਿੰਦ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥ कबहू निंद चिंद बिउहार ॥ Kabhū ninḏ cẖinḏ bi▫uhār. Sometimes, they are occupied with slander and anxiety. ਕਬਹੂ ਊਭ ਅਕਾਸ ਪਇਆਲ ॥ कबहू ऊभ अकास पइआल ॥ Kabhū ūbẖ akās pa▫i▫āl. Sometimes, they are high in the Akaashic Ethers, sometimes in the nether regions of the underworld. ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰ ॥੫॥ नानक आपि मिलावणहार ॥५॥ Nānak āp milāvaṇhār. ||5|| O Nanak, God Himself unites them with Himself. ||5|| ਕਬਹੂ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ॥ कबहू निरति करै बहु भाति ॥ Kabhū niraṯ karai baho bẖāṯ. Sometimes, they dance in various ways. ਕਬਹੂ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ कबहू सोइ रहै दिनु राति ॥ Kabhū so▫e rahai ḏin rāṯ. Sometimes, they remain asleep day and night. ਕਬਹੂ ਮਹਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥ कबहू महा क्रोध बिकराल ॥ Kabhū mahā kroḏẖ bikrāl. Sometimes, they are awesome, in terrible rage. ਕਬਹੂੰ ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਹੋਤ ਰਵਾਲ ॥ कबहूं सरब की होत रवाल ॥ Kabahūʼn sarab kī hoṯ ravāl. Sometimes, they are the dust of the feet of all. ਕਬਹੂ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੈ ਬਡ ਰਾਜਾ ॥ कबहू होइ बहै बड राजा ॥ Kabhū ho▫e bahai bad rājā. Sometimes, they sit as great kings. ਕਬਹੁ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਨੀਚ ਕਾ ਸਾਜਾ ॥ कबहु भेखारी नीच का साजा ॥ Kabahu bẖekẖārī nīcẖ kā sājā. Sometimes, they wear the coat of a lowly beggar. ਕਬਹੂ ਅਪਕੀਰਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ कबहू अपकीरति महि आवै ॥ Kabhū apkīraṯ mėh āvai. Sometimes, they come to have evil reputations. ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ॥੬॥ गुर प्रसादि नानक सचु कहै ॥६॥ Gur parsāḏ Nānak sacẖ kahai. ||6|| By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, the Truth is told. ||6|| ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਵ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ॥ जिउ प्रभु राखै तिव ही रहै ॥ Ji▫o parabẖ rākẖai ṯiv hī rahai. As God keeps them, so they remain. ਕਬਹੂ ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ कबहू भला भला कहावै ॥ Kabhū bẖalā bẖalā kahāvai. Sometimes, they are known as very, very good. ਕਬਹੂ ਹੋਇ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਰੇ ਬਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ॥ कबहू होइ पंडितु करे बख्यानु ॥ Kabhū ho▫e pandiṯ kare bakẖ▫yān. Sometimes, as scholars, they deliver lectures. ਕਬਹੂ ਮੋਨਿਧਾਰੀ ਲਾਵੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ कबहू मोनिधारी लावै धिआनु ॥ Kabhū moniḏẖārī lāvai ḏẖi▫ān. Sometimes, they hold to silence in deep meditation. ਕਬਹੂ ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥ कबहू तट तीरथ इसनान ॥ Kabhū ṯat ṯirath isnān. Sometimes, they take cleansing baths at places of pilgrimage. ਕਬਹੂ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ॥ कबहू सिध साधिक मुखि गिआन ॥ Kabhū siḏẖ sāḏẖik mukẖ gi▫ān. Sometimes, as Siddhas or seekers, they impart spiritual wisdom. ਕਬਹੂ ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਆ ॥ कबहू कीट हसति पतंग होइ जीआ ॥ Kabhū kīt hasaṯ paṯang ho▫e jī▫ā. Sometimes, they becomes worms, elephants, or moths. ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਭਰਮੀਆ ॥ अनिक जोनि भरमै भरमीआ ॥ Anik jon bẖarmai bẖarmī▫ā. They may wander and roam through countless incarnations.
