ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥ सेवा एक न जानसि अवरे ॥ Sévaa ék na jaanas avré. Those who serve the One Lord, do not know any other. ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1. Gauree, First Mehl: ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥ परपंच बिआधि तिआगै कवरे ॥ Parpanch bi▫aaḋʰ ṫi▫aagæ kavré. They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts. ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ भाइ मिलै सचु साचै सचु रे ॥१॥ Bʰaa▫é milæ sach saachæ sach ré. ||1|| Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1|| ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ ऐसा राम भगतु जनु होई ॥ Æsaa raam bʰagaṫ jan ho▫ee. Such are the humble devotees of the Lord. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ हरि गुण गाइ मिलै मलु धोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Har guṇ gaa▫é milæ mal ḋʰo▫ee. ||1|| rahaa▫o. They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause|| ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ ऊंधो कवलु सगल संसारै ॥ Ooⁿḋʰo kaval sagal sansaaræ. The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥ दुरमति अगनि जगत परजारै ॥ Ḋurmaṫ agan jagaṫ parjaaræ. The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world. ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥ सो उबरै गुर सबदु बीचारै ॥२॥ So ubræ gur sabaḋ beechaaræ. ||2|| They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||2|| ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥ त्रिसना राचि ततु नही बीना ॥३॥ Ṫarisnaa raach ṫaṫ nahee beenaa. ||3|| Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3|| ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥ मिरगु मरै सहि अपुना कीना ॥ Mirag maræ sėh apunaa keenaa. and the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die. ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥ भ्रिंग पतंगु कुंचरु अरु मीना ॥ Bʰaring paṫang kunchar ar meenaa. The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥ कामु चितै कामणि हितकारी ॥ Kaam chiṫæ kaamaṇ hiṫkaaree. The lover of women is obsessed with sex. ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ क्रोधु बिनासै सगल विकारी ॥ Kroḋʰ binaasæ sagal vikaaree. All the wicked are ruined by their anger. ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ पति मति खोवहि नामु विसारी ॥४॥ Paṫ maṫ kʰovėh naam visaaree. ||4|| Honor and good sense are lost, when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4|| ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ पर घरि चीतु मनमुखि डोलाइ ॥ Par gʰar cheeṫ manmukʰ dolaa▫é. The self-willed Manmukh is lured by another man’s wife. ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ गलि जेवरी धंधै लपटाइ ॥ Gal jévree ḋʰanḋʰæ laptaa▫é. The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥ गुरमुखि छूटसि हरि गुण गाइ ॥५॥ Gurmukʰ chʰootas har guṇ gaa▫é. ||5|| The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥ जिउ तनु बिधवा पर कउ देई ॥ Ji▫o ṫan biḋʰvaa par ka▫o ḋé▫ee. The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger; ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ बिनु पिर त्रिपति न कबहूं होई ॥६॥ Bin pir ṫaripaṫ na kabahooⁿ ho▫ee. ||6|| but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6|| ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥ कामि दामि चितु पर वसि सेई ॥ Kaam ḋaam chiṫ par vas sé▫ee. she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money, ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ पड़ि पड़ि पोथी सिंम्रिति पाठा ॥ Paṛ paṛ poṫʰee simriṫ paatʰaa. You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Smritis, ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥ बेद पुराण पड़ै सुणि थाटा ॥ Béḋ puraaṇ paṛæ suṇ ṫʰaataa. and read Vedas and Puranas until tired; ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥ बिनु रस राते मनु बहु नाटा ॥७॥ Bin ras raaṫé man baho naataa. ||7|| but without being imbued with the Lord’s essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7|| ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ जिउ चात्रिक जल प्रेम पिआसा ॥ Ji▫o chaaṫrik jal parém pi▫aasaa. As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain, ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥ जिउ मीना जल माहि उलासा ॥ Ji▫o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa. and as the fish delights in the water, ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥ नानक हरि रसु पी त्रिपतासा ॥८॥११॥ Naanak har ras pee ṫaripṫaasaa. ||8||11|| Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||
