ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ हउमै करतिआ नह सुखु होइ ॥ Ha▫umæ karṫi▫aa nah sukʰ ho▫é. Acting in egotism, peace is not obtained. ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी गुआरेरी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛee gu▫aaréree mėhlaa 1. Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehl: ਮਨਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ मनमति झूठी सचा सोइ ॥ Manmaṫ jʰootʰee sachaa so▫é. The intellect of the mind is false; only the Lord is True. ਸਗਲ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੋਇ ॥ सगल बिगूते भावै दोइ ॥ Sagal bigooṫé bʰaavæ ḋo▫é. All who love duality are ruined. ਐਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥ ऐसा जगु देखिआ जूआरी ॥ Æsaa jag ḋékʰi▫aa joo▫aaree. I have seen the world to be such a gambler; ਸੋ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ सो कमावै धुरि लिखिआ होइ ॥१॥ So kamaavæ ḋʰur likʰi▫aa ho▫é. ||1|| People act as they are preordained. ||1|| ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ सभि सुख मागै नामु बिसारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Sabʰ sukʰ maagæ naam bisaaree. ||1|| rahaa▫o. all beg for peace, but they forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਤਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ अदिसटु दिसै ता कहिआ जाइ ॥ Aḋisat ḋisæ ṫaa kahi▫aa jaa▫é. If the Unseen Lord could be seen, then He could be described. ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਕਹਣਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ बिनु देखे कहणा बिरथा जाइ ॥ Bin ḋékʰé kahṇaa birṫʰaa jaa▫é. Without seeing Him, all descriptions are useless. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ गुरमुखि दीसै सहजि सुभाइ ॥ Gurmukʰ ḋeesæ sahj subʰaa▫é. The Gurmukh sees Him with intuitive ease. ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ सेवा सुरति एक लिव लाइ ॥२॥ Sévaa suraṫ ék liv laa▫é. ||2|| So, serve the One Lord, with loving awareness. ||2|| ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗਲ ਹੋਇ ॥ सुखु मांगत दुखु आगल होइ ॥ Sukʰ maaⁿgaṫ ḋukʰ aagal ho▫é. People beg for peace, but they receive severe pain. ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ करि करि करता देखै सोइ ॥३॥ Kar kar karṫaa ḋékʰæ so▫é. ||3|| The Creator created the creation, and He watches over it. ||3|| ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥ त्रिसना अगनि सबदि बुझाए ॥ Ṫarisnaa agan sabaḋ bujʰaa▫é. The fire of desire is quenched by the Word of the Shabad. ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ एक बिना झूठे मुकति न होइ ॥ Ék binaa jʰootʰé mukaṫ na ho▫é. You are false - without the One, there is no liberation. ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥ सगल विकारी हारु परोइ ॥ Sagal vikaaree haar paro▫é. They are all weaving a wreath of corruption. ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥ दूजा भरमु सहजि सुभाए ॥ Ḋoojaa bʰaram sahj subʰaa▫é. Duality and doubt are automatically eliminated. ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ गुरमती नामु रिदै वसाए ॥ Gurmaṫee naam riḋæ vasaa▫é. Following the Guru’s Teachings, the Naam abides in the heart. ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥ साची बाणी हरि गुण गाए ॥४॥ Saachee baṇee har guṇ gaa▫é. ||4|| Through the True Word of His Bani, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4|| ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਉ ॥ तन महि साचो गुरमुखि भाउ ॥ Ṫan mėh saacho gurmukʰ bʰaa▫o. The True Lord abides within the body of that Gurmukh who enshrines love for Him. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਉ ॥ नाम बिना नाही निज ठाउ ॥ Naam binaa naahee nij tʰaa▫o. Without the Naam, none obtain their own place. ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥ प्रेम पराइण प्रीतम राउ ॥ Parém paraa▫iṇ pareeṫam raa▫o. The Beloved Lord King is dedicated to love. ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਕੁਛਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲਾ ॥ मनमुख कुचील कुछित बिकराला ॥ Manmukʰ kucheel kʰuchʰiṫ bikraalaa. The self-willed Manmukh is filthy, cursed and dreadful. ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੫॥ नदरि करे ता बूझै नाउ ॥५॥ Naḋar karé ṫaa boojʰæ naa▫o. ||5|| If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then we realize His Name. ||5|| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ माइआ मोहु सरब जंजाला ॥ Maa▫i▫aa moh sarab janjaalaa. Emotional attachment to Maya is total entanglement. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवे चूकै जंजाला ॥ Saṫgur sévé chookæ janjaalaa. Serving the True Guru, these entanglements are ended. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲਾ ॥੬॥ अमृत नामु सदा सुखु नाला ॥६॥ Amriṫ naam saḋaa sukʰ naalaa. ||6|| In the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, you shall abide in lasting peace. ||6|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि बूझै एक लिव लाए ॥ Gurmukʰ boojʰæ ék liv laa▫é. The Gurmukhs understand the One Lord, and enshrine love for Him. ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ निज घरि वासै साचि समाए ॥ Nij gʰar vaasæ saach samaa▫é. They dwell in the home of their own inner beings, and merge in the True Lord. ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ जंमणु मरणा ठाकि रहाए ॥ Jamaṇ marṇaa tʰaak rahaa▫é. The cycle of birth and death has ended. ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥ पूरे गुर ते इह मति पाए ॥७॥ Pooré gur ṫé ih maṫ paa▫é. ||7|| This understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||7|| ਕਥਨੀ ਕਥਉ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਰੁ ॥ कथनी कथउ न आवै ओरु ॥ Kaṫʰnee kaṫʰa▫o na aavæ or. Speaking the speech, there is no end to it. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥੪॥ नानकु नीचु कहै लिव लाइ ॥८॥४॥ Naanak neech kahæ liv laa▫é. ||8||4|| Nanak, the lowly, says embrace love for the Lord. ||8||4|| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥ दुखु सुखु भाणै तिसै रजाइ ॥ Ḋukʰ sukʰ bʰaaṇæ ṫisæ rajaa▫é. Pain and pleasure reside in the Pleasure of His Will and His Command. ਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਛਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰੁ ਹੋਰੁ ॥ गुरु पुछि देखिआ नाही दरु होरु ॥ Gur puchʰ ḋékʰi▫aa naahee ḋar hor. I have consulted the Guru, and I have seen that there is no other door than His.
