ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ जह देखा तह दीन दइआला ॥ Jah ḋékʰaa ṫah ḋeen ḋa▫i▫aalaa. Wherever I look, I see the Lord, merciful to the meek. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ जीआ अंदरि जुगति समाई रहिओ निरालमु राइआ ॥१॥ Jee▫aa anḋar jugaṫ samaa▫ee rahi▫o niraalam raa▫i▫aa. ||1|| He pervades all beings in His mysterious way; the Sovereign Lord remains detached. ||1|| ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ॥ आइ न जाई प्रभु किरपाला ॥ Aa▫é na jaa▫ee parabʰ kirpaalaa. God is compassionate; He does not come or go in reincarnation. ਜਗੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ जगु तिस की छाइआ जिसु बापु न माइआ ॥ Jag ṫis kee chʰaa▫i▫aa jis baap na maa▫i▫aa. The world is a reflection of Him; He has no father or mother. ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭੈਣ ਨ ਭਰਾਉ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ ना तिसु भैण न भराउ कमाइआ ॥ Naa ṫis bʰæṇ na bʰaraa▫o kamaa▫i▫aa. He has not acquired any sister or brother. ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਜਾਤੀ ਓਹੁ ਅਜਰਾਵਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ ना तिसु ओपति खपति कुल जाती ओहु अजरावरु मनि भाइआ ॥२॥ Naa ṫis opaṫ kʰapaṫ kul jaaṫee oh ajraavar man bʰaa▫i▫aa. ||2|| There is no creation or destruction for Him; He has no ancestry or social status. The Ageless Lord is pleasing to my mind. ||2|| ਤੂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲਾ ॥ तू अकाल पुरखु नाही सिरि काला ॥ Ṫoo akaal purakʰ naahee sir kaalaa. You are the Deathless Primal Being. Death does not hover over Your head. ਤੂ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖ ਅਗੰਮ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ तू पुरखु अलेख अगंम निराला ॥ Ṫoo purakʰ alékʰ agamm niraalaa. You are the indescribable, inaccessible and unique Primal Lord. ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਤਿ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ सत संतोखि सबदि अति सीतलु सहज भाइ लिव लाइआ ॥३॥ Saṫ sanṫokʰ sabaḋ aṫ seeṫal sahj bʰaa▫é liv laa▫i▫aa. ||3|| You are true and content; the Word of Your Shabad is cool and soothing. Through it, we are lovingly, intuitively attuned to You. ||3|| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਵਰਤਾਇ ਚਉਥੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ त्रै वरताइ चउथै घरि वासा ॥ Ṫaræ varṫaa▫é cha▫uṫʰæ gʰar vaasaa. The three qualities are pervasive; the Lord dwells in His home, the fourth state. ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਕੀਏ ਇਕ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥ काल बिकाल कीए इक ग्रासा ॥ Kaal bikaal kee▫é ik garasaa. He has made death and birth into a bite of food. ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ निरमल जोति सरब जगजीवनु गुरि अनहद सबदि दिखाइआ ॥४॥ Nirmal joṫ sarab jagjeevan gur anhaḋ sabaḋ ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa. ||4|| The immaculate Light is the Life of the whole world. The Guru reveals the unstruck melody of the Shabad. ||4|| ਊਤਮ ਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ऊतम जन संत भले हरि पिआरे ॥ Ooṫam jan sanṫ bʰalé har pi▫aaré. Sublime and good are those humble Saints, the beloved ones of the Lord. ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥ हरि रस माते पारि उतारे ॥ Har ras maaṫé paar uṫaaré. They are intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord, and are carried across to the other side. ਨਾਨਕ ਰੇਣ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ नानक रेण संत जन संगति हरि गुर परसादी पाइआ ॥५॥ Naanak réṇ sanṫ jan sangaṫ har gur parsaadee paa▫i▫aa. ||5|| Nanak is the dust of the Society of the Saints; by Guru’s Grace, he finds the Lord. ||5|| ਤੂ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜੀਅ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ तू अंतरजामी जीअ सभि तेरे ॥ Ṫoo anṫarjaamee jee▫a sabʰ ṫéré. You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. All beings belong to You. ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਮ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ तू दाता हम सेवक तेरे ॥ Ṫoo ḋaaṫaa ham sévak ṫéré. You are the Great Giver; I am Your slave. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥ अमृत नामु क्रिपा करि दीजै गुरि गिआन रतनु दीपाइआ ॥६॥ Amriṫ naam kirpaa kar ḋeejæ gur gi▫aan raṫan ḋeepaa▫i▫aa. ||6|| Please be merciful and bless me with Your Ambrosial Naam, and the jewel, the lamp of the Guru’s spiritual wisdom. ||6|| ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਕੀਆ ॥ पंच ततु मिलि इहु तनु कीआ ॥ Panch ṫaṫ mil ih ṫan kee▫aa. From the union of the five elements, this body was made. ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮ ਪਾਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥ आतम राम पाए सुखु थीआ ॥ Aaṫam raam paa▫é sukʰ ṫʰee▫aa. Finding the Lord, the Supreme Soul, peace is established. ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ करम करतूति अमृत फलु लागा हरि नाम रतनु मनि पाइआ ॥७॥ Karam karṫooṫ amriṫ fal laagaa har naam raṫan man paa▫i▫aa. ||7|| The good karma of past actions brings fruitful rewards, and man is blessed with the jewel of the Lord’s Name. ||7|| ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥ ना तिसु भूख पिआस मनु मानिआ ॥ Naa ṫis bʰookʰ pi▫aas man maani▫aa. His mind does not feel any hunger or thirst. ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ सरब निरंजनु घटि घटि जानिआ ॥ Sarab niranjan gʰat gʰat jaani▫aa. He knows the Immaculate Lord to be everywhere, in each and every heart. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ अमृत रसि राता केवल बैरागी गुरमति भाइ सुभाइआ ॥८॥ Amriṫ ras raaṫaa kéval bæraagee gurmaṫ bʰaa▫é subʰaa▫i▫aa. ||8|| Imbued with the Lord’s Ambrosial essence, he becomes a pure, detached renunciate; he is lovingly absorbed in the Guru’s Teachings. ||8|| ਅਧਿਆਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ अधिआतम करम करे दिनु राती ॥ Aḋʰi▫aaṫam karam karé ḋin raaṫee. Those who live a spiritual lifestyle, day and night, ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ निरमल जोति निरंतरि जाती ॥ Nirmal joṫ niranṫar jaaṫee. sees the immaculate Divine Light deep within. ਸਬਦੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਬੇਣੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥੯॥ सबदु रसालु रसन रसि रसना बेणु रसालु वजाइआ ॥९॥ Sabaḋ rasaal rasan ras rasnaa béṇ rasaal vajaa▫i▫aa. ||9|| Enraptured with the delightful essence of the Shabad, the source of nectar, my tongue plays the sweet music of the flute. ||9|| ਬੇਣੁ ਰਸਾਲ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ बेणु रसाल वजावै सोई ॥ Béṇ rasaal vajaavæ so▫ee. He alone plays the sweet music of this flute, ਜਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ जा की त्रिभवण सोझी होई ॥ Jaa kee ṫaribʰavaṇ sojʰee ho▫ee. who knows the three worlds. ਨਾਨਕ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ नानक बूझहु इह बिधि गुरमति हरि राम नामि लिव लाइआ ॥१०॥ Naanak boojʰhu ih biḋʰ gurmaṫ har raam naam liv laa▫i▫aa. ||10|| O Nanak! Know this, through the Guru’s Teachings, and lovingly focus yourself on the Lord’s Name. ||10|| ਐਸੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥ ऐसे जन विरले संसारे ॥ Æsé jan virlé sansaaré. Rare are those beings in this world, ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥ गुर सबदु वीचारहि रहहि निरारे ॥ Gur sabaḋ vichaarėh rahėh niraaré. who contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and remain detached. ਆਪਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੧॥ आपि तरहि संगति कुल तारहि तिन सफल जनमु जगि आइआ ॥११॥ Aap ṫarėh sangaṫ kul ṫaarėh ṫin safal janam jag aa▫i▫aa. ||11|| They save themselves, and save all their associates and ancestors; fruitful is their birth and coming into this world. ||11|| ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ घरु दरु मंदरु जाणै सोई ॥ Gʰar ḋar manḋar jaaṇæ so▫ee. He alone knows the home of his own heart, and the door to the temple, ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ जिसु पूरे गुर ते सोझी होई ॥ Jis pooré gur ṫé sojʰee ho▫ee. who obtains perfect understanding from the Guru. ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜ ਮਹਲ ਮਹਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਖਤੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥ काइआ गड़ महल महली प्रभु साचा सचु साचा तखतु रचाइआ ॥१२॥ Kaa▫i▫aa gaṛ mahal mahlee parabʰ saachaa sach saachaa ṫakʰaṫ rachaa▫i▫aa. ||12|| In the body-fortress is the palace; God is the True Master of this Palace. The True Lord established His True Throne there. ||12|| ਚਤੁਰ ਦਸ ਹਾਟ ਦੀਵੇ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ॥ चतुर दस हाट दीवे दुइ साखी ॥ Chaṫur ḋas haat ḋeevé ḋu▫é saakʰee. The fourteen realms and the two lamps are the witnesses. ਸੇਵਕ ਪੰਚ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਚਾਖੀ ॥ सेवक पंच नाही बिखु चाखी ॥ Sévak panch naahee bikʰ chaakʰee. The Lord’s servants, the self-elect, do not taste the poison of corruption. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥ अंतरि वसतु अनूप निरमोलक गुरि मिलिऐ हरि धनु पाइआ ॥१३॥ Anṫar vasaṫ anoop nirmolak gur mili▫æ har ḋʰan paa▫i▫aa. ||13|| Deep within, is the priceless, incomparable commodity; meeting with the Guru, the wealth of the Lord is obtained. ||13|| ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਖਤੈ ਕੀ ਲਾਇਕ ॥ तखति बहै तखतै की लाइक ॥ Ṫakʰaṫ bahæ ṫakʰ▫ṫæ kee laa▫ik. He alone sits on the throne, who is worthy of the throne. ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਕ ॥ पंच समाए गुरमति पाइक ॥ Panch samaa▫é gurmaṫ paa▫ik. Following the Guru’s Teachings, he subdues the five demons, and becomes the Lord’s foot soldier. ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥ आदि जुगादी है भी होसी सहसा भरमु चुकाइआ ॥१४॥ Aaḋ jugaaḋee hæ bʰee hosee sahsaa bʰaram chukaa▫i▫aa. ||14|| He has existed from the very beginning of time and throughout the ages; He exists here and now, and will always exist. Meditating on Him, skepticism and doubt are dispelled. ||14|| ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ तखति सलामु होवै दिनु राती ॥ Ṫakʰaṫ salaam hovæ ḋin raaṫee. The Lord of the Throne is greeted and worshiped day and night. ਇਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ इहु साचु वडाई गुरमति लिव जाती ॥ Ih saach vadaa▫ee gurmaṫ liv jaaṫee. This true glorious greatness comes to those who love the Guru’s Teachings. ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੧॥੧੮॥ नानक रामु जपहु तरु तारी हरि अंति सखाई पाइआ ॥१५॥१॥१८॥ Naanak raam japahu ṫar ṫaaree har anṫ sakʰaa▫ee paa▫i▫aa. ||15||1||18|| O Nanak! Meditate on the Lord, and swim across the river; they find the Lord, their best friend, in the end. ||15||1||18|| ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਰੇ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ हरि धनु संचहु रे जन भाई ॥ Har ḋʰan sanchahu ré jan bʰaa▫ee. Gather in the wealth of the Lord, O humble Siblings of Destiny. ਤਸਕਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਗਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ तसकरु चोरु न लागै ता कउ धुनि उपजै सबदि जगाइआ ॥१॥ Ṫaskar chor na laagæ ṫaa ka▫o ḋʰun upjæ sabaḋ jagaa▫i▫aa. ||1|| This wealth cannot be stolen; the celestial melody of the Shabad wells up and keeps us awake and aware. ||1|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ सतिगुर सेवि रहहु सरणाई ॥ Saṫgur sév rahhu sarṇaa▫ee. Serve the True Guru, and remain in His Sanctuary.
