ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 1. Maaroo, Fifth Mehl: ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਲਹਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਹੇਰੈ ॥ मनमुखु लहरि घरु तजि विगूचै अवरा के घर हेरै ॥ Manmukẖ lahar gẖar ṯaj vigūcẖai avrā ke gẖar herai. The self-willed manmukh, in a fit of passion, abandons his home, and is ruined; then, he spies on the homes of others. ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਧਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਭੇਟੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰੈ ॥ ग्रिह धरमु गवाए सतिगुरु न भेटै दुरमति घूमन घेरै ॥ Garih ḏẖaram gavā▫e saṯgur na bẖetai ḏurmaṯ gẖūman gẖerai. He neglects his household duties, and does not meet with the True Guru; he is caught in the whirlpool of evil-mindedness. ਦਿਸੰਤਰੁ ਭਵੈ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਵਧੇਰੈ ॥ दिसंतरु भवै पाठ पड़ि थाका त्रिसना होइ वधेरै ॥ Disanṯar bẖavai pāṯẖ paṛ thākā ṯarisnā ho▫e vaḏẖerai. Wandering in foreign lands and reading scriptures, he grows weary, and his thirsty desires only increase. ਕਾਚੀ ਪਿੰਡੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਢੋਰੈ ॥੧॥ काची पिंडी सबदु न चीनै उदरु भरै जैसे ढोरै ॥१॥ Kācẖī pindī sabaḏ na cẖīnai uḏar bẖarai jaise dẖorai. ||1|| His perishable body does not remember the Word of the Shabad; like a beast, he fills his belly. ||1|| ਬਾਬਾ ਐਸੀ ਰਵਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ॥ बाबा ऐसी रवत रवै संनिआसी ॥ Bābā aisī ravaṯ ravai sani▫āsī. O Baba, this is the way of life of the Sannyaasi, the renunciate. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ गुर कै सबदि एक लिव लागी तेरै नामि रते त्रिपतासी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Gur kai sabaḏ ek liv lāgī ṯerai nām raṯe ṯaripṯāsī. ||1|| rahā▫o. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is to enshrine love for the One Lord. Imbued with Your Name, Lord, he remains satisfied and fulfilled. ||1||Pause|| ਘੋਲੀ ਗੇਰੂ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੇਖ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥ घोली गेरू रंगु चड़ाइआ वसत्र भेख भेखारी ॥ Gẖolī gerū rang cẖaṛā▫i▫ā vasṯar bẖekẖ bẖekẖārī. He dyes his robes with saffron dye, and wearing these robes, he goes out begging. ਕਾਪੜ ਫਾਰਿ ਬਨਾਈ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥ कापड़ फारि बनाई खिंथा झोली माइआधारी ॥ Kāpaṛ fār banā▫ī kẖinthā jẖolī mā▫i▫āḏẖārī. Tearing his robes, he makes a patched coat, and puts the money in his wallet. ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗੈ ਜਗੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥ घरि घरि मागै जगु परबोधै मनि अंधै पति हारी ॥ Gẖar gẖar māgai jag parboḏẖai man anḏẖai paṯ hārī. From house to house he goes begging, and tries to teach the world; but his mind is blind, and so he loses his honor. ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ भरमि भुलाणा सबदु न चीनै जूऐ बाजी हारी ॥२॥ Bẖaram bẖulāṇā sabaḏ na cẖīnai jū▫ai bājī hārī. ||2|| He is deluded by doubt, and does not remember the Word of the Shabad. He loses his life in the gamble. ||2|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੂਅਰ ਤਾਪੈ ॥ अंतरि अगनि न गुर बिनु बूझै बाहरि पूअर तापै ॥ Anṯar agan na gur bin būjẖai bāhar pū▫ar ṯāpai. Without the Guru, the fire within is not quenched; and outside, the fire still burns. ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਆਪੈ ॥ गुर सेवा बिनु भगति न होवी किउ करि चीनसि आपै ॥ Gur sevā bin bẖagaṯ na hovī ki▫o kar cẖīnas āpai. Without serving the Guru, there is no devotional worship. How can anyone, by himself, know the Lord? ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ निंदा करि करि नरक निवासी अंतरि आतम जापै ॥ Ninḏā kar kar narak nivāsī anṯar āṯam jāpai. Slandering others, one lives in hell; within him is hazy darkness. ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਪਾਪੈ ॥੩॥ अठसठि तीरथ भरमि विगूचहि किउ मलु धोपै पापै ॥३॥ Aṯẖsaṯẖ ṯirath bẖaram vigūcẖėh ki▫o mal ḏẖopai pāpai. ||3|| Wandering to the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, he is ruined. How can the filth of sin be washed away? ||3|| ਛਾਣੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ॥ छाणी खाकु बिभूत चड़ाई माइआ का मगु जोहै ॥ Cẖẖāṇī kẖāk bibẖūṯ cẖaṛā▫ī mā▫i▫ā kā mag johai. He sifts through the dust, and applies ashes to his body, but he is searching for the path of Maya's wealth. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਛੋਹੈ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि एकु न जाणै साचु कहे ते छोहै ॥ Anṯar bāhar ek na jāṇai sācẖ kahe ṯe cẖẖohai. Inwardly and outwardly, he does not know the One Lord; if someone tells him the Truth, he grows angry. ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਓਹੈ ॥ पाठु पड़ै मुखि झूठो बोलै निगुरे की मति ओहै ॥ Pāṯẖ paṛai mukẖ jẖūṯẖo bolai nigure kī maṯ ohai. He reads the scriptures, but tells lies; such is the intellect of one who has no Guru. ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੪॥ नामु न जपई किउ सुखु पावै बिनु नावै किउ सोहै ॥४॥ Nām na jap▫ī ki▫o sukẖ pāvai bin nāvai ki▫o sohai. ||4|| Without chanting the Naam, how can he find peace? Without the Name, how can he look good? ||4|| ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਤ ਆਤਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥ मनूआ डोलै दह दिस धावै बिनु रत आतम गिआना ॥ Manū▫ā dolai ḏah ḏis ḏẖāvai bin raṯ āṯam gi▫ānā. Their minds waver and wander in ten directions, without loving devotion and enlightenment of the soul. ਮੂੰਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇ ਜਟਾ ਸਿਖ ਬਾਧੀ ਮੋਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥ मूंडु मुडाइ जटा सिख बाधी मोनि रहै अभिमाना ॥ Mūnd mudā▫e jatā sikẖ bāḏẖī mon rahai abẖimānā. Some shave their heads, some keep their hair in matted tangles; some keep it in braids, while some keep silent, filled with egotistical pride. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥ अम्रितु छोडि महा बिखु पीवै माइआ का देवाना ॥ Amriṯ cẖẖod mahā bikẖ pīvai mā▫i▫ā kā ḏevānā. They abandon the Ambrosial Nectar, and drink the deadly poison, driven mad by Maya. ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਸੂਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੫॥ किरतु न मिटई हुकमु न बूझै पसूआ माहि समाना ॥५॥ Kiraṯ na mit▫ī hukam na būjẖai pasū▫ā māhi samānā. ||5|| Past actions cannot be erased; without understanding the Hukam of the Lord's Command, they become beasts. ||5|| ਹਾਥ ਕਮੰਡਲੁ ਕਾਪੜੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ हाथ कमंडलु कापड़ीआ मनि त्रिसना उपजी भारी ॥ Hāth kamandal kāpṛī▫ā man ṯarisnā upjī bẖārī. With bowl in hand, wearing his patched coat, great desires well up in his mind. ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ इसत्री तजि करि कामि विआपिआ चितु लाइआ पर नारी ॥ Isṯarī ṯaj kar kām vi▫āpi▫ā cẖiṯ lā▫i▫ā par nārī. Abandoning his own wife, he is engrossed in sexual desire; his thoughts are on the wives of others. ਸਿਖ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਲੰਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ॥ सिख करे करि सबदु न चीनै ल्मपटु है बाजारी ॥ Sikẖ kare kar sabaḏ na cẖīnai lampat hai bājārī. He teaches and preaches, but does not contemplate the Shabad; he is bought and sold on the street. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੀ ਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੬॥ अंतरि बिखु बाहरि निभराती ता जमु करे खुआरी ॥६॥ Anṯar bikẖ bāhar nibẖrāṯī ṯā jam kare kẖu▫ārī. ||6|| With poison within, he pretends to be free of doubt; he is ruined and humiliated by the Messenger of Death. ||6|| ਸੋ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ सो संनिआसी जो सतिगुर सेवै विचहु आपु गवाए ॥ So sani▫āsī jo saṯgur sevai vicẖahu āp gavā▫e. He alone is a Sannyaasi, who serves the True Guru, and removes his self-conceit from within. ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ छादन भोजन की आस न करई अचिंतु मिलै सो पाए ॥ Cẖẖāḏan bẖojan kī ās na kar▫ī acẖinṯ milai so pā▫e. He does not ask for clothes or food; without asking, he accepts whatever he receives. ਬਕੈ ਨ ਬੋਲੈ ਖਿਮਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ बकै न बोलै खिमा धनु संग्रहै तामसु नामि जलाए ॥ Bakai na bolai kẖimā ḏẖan sangrahai ṯāmas nām jalā▫e. He does not speak empty words; he gathers in the wealth of tolerance, and burns away his anger with the Naam. ਧਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥ धनु गिरही संनिआसी जोगी जि हरि चरणी चितु लाए ॥७॥ Ḏẖan girhī sani▫āsī jogī jė har cẖarṇī cẖiṯ lā▫e. ||7|| Blessed is such a householder, Sannyaasi and Yogi, who focuses his consciousness on the Lord's feet. ||7|| ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ आस निरास रहै संनिआसी एकसु सिउ लिव लाए ॥ Ās nirās rahai sani▫āsī ekas si▫o liv lā▫e. Amidst hope, the Sannyaasi remains unmoved by hope; he remains lovingly focused on the One Lord. ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਏ ॥ हरि रसु पीवै ता साति आवै निज घरि ताड़ी लाए ॥ Har ras pīvai ṯā sāṯ āvai nij gẖar ṯāṛī lā▫e. He drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord, and so finds peace and tranquility; in the home of his own being, he remains absorbed in the deep trance of meditation. ਮਨੂਆ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ मनूआ न डोलै गुरमुखि बूझै धावतु वरजि रहाए ॥ Manū▫ā na dolai gurmukẖ būjẖai ḏẖāvaṯ varaj rahā▫e. His mind does not waver; as Gurmukh, he understands. He restrains it from wandering out. ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖੋਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥ ग्रिहु सरीरु गुरमती खोजे नामु पदारथु पाए ॥८॥ Garihu sarīr gurmaṯī kẖoje nām paḏārath pā▫e. ||8|| Following the Guru's Teachings, he searches the home of his body, and obtains the wealth of the Naam. ||8|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु सरेसट नामि रते वीचारी ॥ Barahmā bisan mahes saresat nām raṯe vīcẖārī. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are exalted, imbued with contemplative meditation on the Naam. ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਗਨ ਪਤਾਲੀ ਜੰਤਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ खाणी बाणी गगन पताली जंता जोति तुमारी ॥ Kẖāṇī baṇī gagan paṯālī janṯā joṯ ṯumārī. The sources of creation, speech, the heavens and the underworld, all beings and creatures, are infused with Your Light. ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ सभि सुख मुकति नाम धुनि बाणी सचु नामु उर धारी ॥ Sabẖ sukẖ mukaṯ nām ḏẖun baṇī sacẖ nām ur ḏẖārī. All comforts and liberation are found in the Naam, and the vibrations of the Guru's Bani; I have enshrined the True Name within my heart. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੯॥੭॥ नाम बिना नही छूटसि नानक साची तरु तू तारी ॥९॥७॥ Nām binā nahī cẖẖūtas Nānak sācẖī ṯar ṯū ṯārī. ||9||7|| Without the Naam, no one is saved; O Nanak, with the Truth, cross over to the other side. ||9||7||
