ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥

ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ
बिखु बोहिथा लादिआ दीआ समुंद मंझारि ॥
Bikẖ bohithā lāḏi▫ā ḏī▫ā samunḏ manjẖār.
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ
मारू महला १ ॥
Mārū mėhlā 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਪਾਰੁ
कंधी दिसि न आवई ना उरवारु न पारु ॥
Kanḏẖī ḏis na āvī nā urvār na pār.
The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond.

ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
वंझी हाथि न खेवटू जलु सागरु असरालु ॥१॥
vanjẖī hāth na kẖevtū jal sāgar asrāl. ||1||
There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ
बाबा जगु फाथा महा जालि ॥
Bābā jag fāthā mahā jāl.
O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
गुर परसादी उबरे सचा नामु समालि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gur parsādī ubre sacẖā nām samāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.
By Guru's Grace, they are saved, contemplating the True Name. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ
सतिगुरू है बोहिथा सबदि लंघावणहारु ॥
Saṯgurū hai bohithā sabaḏ langẖāvaṇhār.
The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.

ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ
तिथै पवणु न पावको ना जलु ना आकारु ॥
Ŧithai pavaṇ na pāvko nā jal nā ākār.
There is neither wind nor fire, neither water nor form there.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
तिथै सचा सचि नाइ भवजल तारणहारु ॥२॥
Ŧithai sacẖā sacẖ nā▫e bẖavjal ṯāraṇhār. ||2||
The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ
गुरमुखि लंघे से पारि पए सचे सिउ लिव लाइ ॥
Gurmukẖ langẖe se pār pa▫e sacẖe si▫o liv lā▫e.
The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ
आवा गउणु निवारिआ जोती जोति मिलाइ ॥
Āvā ga▫oṇ nivāri▫ā joṯī joṯ milā▫e.
Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
गुरमती सहजु ऊपजै सचे रहै समाइ ॥३॥
Gurmaṯī sahj ūpjai sacẖe rahai samā▫e. ||3||
Following the Guru's Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3||

ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ
सपु पिड़ाई पाईऐ बिखु अंतरि मनि रोसु ॥
Sap piṛā▫ī pā▫ī▫ai bikẖ anṯar man ros.
The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ
पूरबि लिखिआ पाईऐ किस नो दीजै दोसु ॥
Pūrab likẖi▫ā pā▫ī▫ai kis no ḏījai ḏos.
One obtains what is pre-ordained; why does he blame others?

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ
दुरमति फाथा फाहीऐ फिरि फिरि पछोताइ ॥
Ḏurmaṯ fāthā fā▫ī▫ai fir fir pacẖẖoṯā▫e.
caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again.

ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ
मागरमछु फहाईऐ कुंडी जालु वताइ ॥
Māgarmacẖẖ fahā▫ī▫ai kundī jāl vaṯā▫e.
The crocodile is caught by the hook and line;

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥
गुरमुखि गारड़ु जे सुणे मंने नाउ संतोसु ॥४॥
Gurmukẖ gāraṛ je suṇe manne nā▫o sanṯos. ||4||
If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4||

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
जमण मरणु न सुझई किरतु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥५॥
Jamaṇ maraṇ na sujẖ▫ī kiraṯ na meti▫ā jā▫e. ||5||
He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one's past actions cannot be erased. ||5||

ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ
हउमै बिखु पाइ जगतु उपाइआ सबदु वसै बिखु जाइ ॥
Ha▫umai bikẖ pā▫e jagaṯ upā▫i▫ā sabaḏ vasai bikẖ jā▫e.
Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated.

ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ
जरा जोहि न सकई सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥
Jarā johi na sak▫ī sacẖ rahai liv lā▫e.
Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
जीवन मुकतु सो आखीऐ जिसु विचहु हउमै जाइ ॥६॥
Jīvan mukaṯ so ākẖī▫ai jis vicẖahu ha▫umai jā▫e. ||6||
He alone is called Jivan-Mukta, liberated while yet alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6||

ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ
धंधै धावत जगु बाधिआ ना बूझै वीचारु ॥
Ḏẖanḏẖai ḏẖāvaṯ jag bāḏẖi▫ā nā būjẖai vīcẖār.
The world is chasing after worldly affairs; caught and bound, it does not understand contemplative meditation.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ
जमण मरणु विसारिआ मनमुख मुगधु गवारु ॥
Jamaṇ maraṇ visāri▫ā manmukẖ mugaḏẖ gavār.
The foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
गुरि राखे से उबरे सचा सबदु वीचारि ॥७॥
Gur rākẖe se ubre sacẖā sabaḏ vīcẖār. ||7||
Those whom the Guru has protected are saved, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||7||

ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ
सूहटु पिंजरि प्रेम कै बोलै बोलणहारु ॥
Sūhat pinjar parem kai bolai bolaṇhār.
In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks.

ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ
सचु चुगै अम्रितु पीऐ उडै त एका वार ॥
Sacẖ cẖugai amriṯ pī▫ai udai ṯa ekā vār.
It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once.

ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥
गुरि मिलिऐ खसमु पछाणीऐ कहु नानक मोख दुआरु ॥८॥२॥
Gur mili▫ai kẖasam pacẖẖāṇī▫ai kaho Nānak mokẖ ḏu▫ār. ||8||2||
Meeting with the Guru, one recognizes his Lord and Master; says Nanak, he finds the gate of liberation. ||8||2||
