लिखिआ होवै नानका करता करे सु होइ ॥१॥
Likẖi▫ā hovai nānkā karṯā kare so ho▫e. ||1||
Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1||
मः १ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
First Mehl:
रंना होईआ बोधीआ पुरस होए सईआद ॥
Rannā ho▫ī▫ā boḏẖī▫ā puras ho▫e sa▫ī▫āḏ.
Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.
सीलु संजमु सुच भंनी खाणा खाजु अहाजु ॥
Sīl sanjam sucẖ bẖannī kẖāṇā kẖāj ahāj.
Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.
सरमु गइआ घरि आपणै पति उठि चली नालि ॥
Saram ga▫i▫ā gẖar āpṇai paṯ uṯẖ cẖalī nāl.
Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.
नानक सचा एकु है अउरु न सचा भालि ॥२॥
Nānak sacẖā ek hai a▫or na sacẖā bẖāl. ||2||
O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||
पउड़ी ॥
Pa▫oṛī.
Pauree:
बाहरि भसम लेपन करे अंतरि गुबारी ॥
Bāhar bẖasam lepan kare anṯar gubārī.
You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.
खिंथा झोली बहु भेख करे दुरमति अहंकारी ॥
Kẖinthā jẖolī baho bẖekẖ kare ḏurmaṯ ahaʼnkārī.
You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.
साहिब सबदु न ऊचरै माइआ मोह पसारी ॥
Sāhib sabaḏ na ūcẖrai mā▫i▫ā moh pasārī.
You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.
अंतरि लालचु भरमु है भरमै गावारी ॥
Anṯar lālacẖ bẖaram hai bẖarmai gāvārī.
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
नानक नामु न चेतई जूऐ बाजी हारी ॥१४॥
Nānak nām na cẖeṯ▫ī jū▫ai bājī hārī. ||14||
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||
सलोक मः १ ॥
Salok mėhlā 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:
लख सिउ प्रीति होवै लख जीवणु किआ खुसीआ किआ चाउ ॥
Lakẖ si▫o parīṯ hovai lakẖ jīvaṇ ki▫ā kẖusī▫ā ki▫ā cẖā▫o.
You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?
विछुड़िआ विसु होइ विछोड़ा एक घड़ी महि जाइ ॥
vicẖẖuṛi▫ā vis ho▫e vicẖẖoṛā ek gẖaṛī mėh jā▫e.
And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.
जे सउ वर्हिआ मिठा खाजै भी फिरि कउड़ा खाइ ॥
Je sa▫o varĥi▫ā miṯẖā kẖājai bẖī fir ka▫uṛā kẖā▫e.
You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.
मिठा खाधा चिति न आवै कउड़तणु धाइ जाइ ॥
Miṯẖā kẖāḏẖā cẖiṯ na āvai ka▫uṛ▫ṯaṇ ḏẖā▫e jā▫e.
Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.
मिठा कउड़ा दोवै रोग ॥
Miṯẖā ka▫uṛā ḏovai rog.
The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.
नानक अंति विगुते भोग ॥
Nānak anṯ viguṯe bẖog.
O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.
झखि झखि झखणा झगड़ा झाख ॥
Jẖakẖ jẖakẖ jẖakẖ▫ṇā jẖagṛā jẖākẖ.
It is useless to worry and struggle to death.
झखि झखि जाहि झखहि तिन्ह पासि ॥१॥
Jẖakẖ jẖakẖ jāhi jẖakẖėh ṯinĥ pās. ||1||
Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||
मः १ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
First Mehl:
कापड़ु काठु रंगाइआ रांगि ॥
Kāpaṛ kāṯẖ rangā▫i▫ā rāʼng.
They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.
घर गच कीते बागे बाग ॥
Gẖar gacẖ kīṯe bāge bāg.
Their houses are painted beautifully white.
साद सहज करि मनु खेलाइआ ॥
Sāḏ sahj kar man kẖelā▫i▫ā.
In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.
तै सह पासहु कहणु कहाइआ ॥
Ŧai sah pāshu kahaṇ kahā▫i▫ā.
When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.
मिठा करि कै कउड़ा खाइआ ॥
Miṯẖā kar kai ka▫uṛā kẖā▫i▫ā.
They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.
तिनि कउड़ै तनि रोगु जमाइआ ॥
Ŧin ka▫uṛai ṯan rog jamā▫i▫ā.
The bitter disease grows in the body.
जे फिरि मिठा पेड़ै पाइ ॥
Je fir miṯẖā peṛai pā▫e.
If, later on, they receive the sweet,
तउ कउड़तणु चूकसि माइ ॥
Ŧa▫o ka▫uṛ▫ṯaṇ cẖūkas mā▫e.
then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.
नानक गुरमुखि पावै सोइ ॥
Nānak gurmukẖ pāvai so▫e.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive
जिस नो प्रापति लिखिआ होइ ॥२॥
Jis no parāpaṯ likẖi▫ā ho▫e. ||2||
what he is predestined to receive. ||2||
पउड़ी ॥
Pa▫oṛī.
Pauree:
जिन कै हिरदै मैलु कपटु है बाहरु धोवाइआ ॥
Jin kai hirḏai mail kapat hai bāhar ḏẖovā▫i▫ā.
Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.
कूड़ु कपटु कमावदे कूड़ु परगटी आइआ ॥
Kūṛ kapat kamāvḏe kūṛ pargatī ā▫i▫ā.
They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.
अंदरि होइ सु निकलै नह छपै छपाइआ ॥
Anḏar ho▫e so niklai nah cẖẖapai cẖẖapā▫i▫ā.
That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.
कूड़ै लालचि लगिआ फिरि जूनी पाइआ ॥
Kūrhai lālacẖ lagi▫ā fir jūnī pā▫i▫ā.
Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.
नानक जो बीजै सो खावणा करतै लिखि पाइआ ॥१५॥
Nānak jo bījai so kẖāvṇā karṯai likẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||15||
O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||
सलोक मः २ ॥
Salok mėhlā 2.
Shalok, Second Mehl:
कथा कहाणी बेदीं आणी पापु पुंनु बीचारु ॥
Kathā kahāṇī beḏīʼn āṇī pāp punn bīcẖār.
The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.
दे दे लैणा लै लै देणा नरकि सुरगि अवतार ॥
Ḏe ḏe laiṇā lai lai ḏeṇā narak surag avṯār.
What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.
उतम मधिम जातीं जिनसी भरमि भवै संसारु ॥
Uṯam maḏẖim jāṯīʼn jinsī bẖaram bẖavai sansār.
High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.
अम्रित बाणी ततु वखाणी गिआन धिआन विचि आई ॥
Amriṯ baṇī ṯaṯ vakẖāṇī gi▫ān ḏẖi▫ān vicẖ ā▫ī.
The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.
गुरमुखि आखी गुरमुखि जाती सुरतीं करमि धिआई ॥
Gurmukẖ ākẖī gurmukẖ jāṯī surṯīʼn karam ḏẖi▫ā▫ī.
The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.
हुकमु साजि हुकमै विचि रखै हुकमै अंदरि वेखै ॥
Hukam sāj hukmai vicẖ rakẖai hukmai anḏar vekẖai.
By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.
नानक अगहु हउमै तुटै तां को लिखीऐ लेखै ॥१॥
Nānak agahu ha▫umai ṯutai ṯāʼn ko likī▫ai lekẖai. ||1||
O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1||
मः १ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
First Mehl:
बेदु पुकारे पुंनु पापु सुरग नरक का बीउ ॥
Beḏ pukāre punn pāp surag narak kā bī▫o.
The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.
जो बीजै सो उगवै खांदा जाणै जीउ ॥
Jo bījai so ugvai kẖāʼnḏā jāṇai jī▫o.
Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.
गिआनु सलाहे वडा करि सचो सचा नाउ ॥
Gi▫ān salāhe vadā kar sacẖo sacẖā nā▫o.
Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.
सचु बीजै सचु उगवै दरगह पाईऐ थाउ ॥
Sacẖ bījai sacẖ ugvai ḏargėh pā▫ī▫ai thā▫o.
When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.
