ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਖਾਈ ॥
कितु बिधि आसा मनसा खाई ॥
Kiṯ biḏẖ āsā mansā kẖā▫ī.
How have you subdued your hopes and desires?

ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
कितु बिधि जोति निरंतरि पाई ॥
Kiṯ biḏẖ joṯ niranṯar pā▫ī.
How have you found the Light deep within your nucleus?

ਬਿਨੁ ਦੰਤਾ ਕਿਉ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
बिनु दंता किउ खाईऐ सारु ॥
Bin ḏanṯā ki▫o kẖā▫ī▫ai sār.
Without teeth, how can you eat iron?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧੯॥
नानक साचा करहु बीचारु ॥१९॥
Nānak sācẖā karahu bīcẖār. ||19||
Give us your true opinion, Nanak."||19||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਜਨਮੇ ਗਵਨੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥
सतिगुर कै जनमे गवनु मिटाइआ ॥
Saṯgur kai janme gavan mitā▫i▫ā.
Born into the House of the True Guru, my wandering in reincarnation ended.

ਅਨਹਤਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
अनहति राते इहु मनु लाइआ ॥
Anhaṯ rāṯe ih man lā▫i▫ā.
My mind is attached and attuned to the unstruck sound current.

ਮਨਸਾ ਆਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਈ ॥
मनसा आसा सबदि जलाई ॥
Mansā āsā sabaḏ jalā▫ī.
Through the Word of the Shabad, my hopes and desires have been burnt away.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
गुरमुखि जोति निरंतरि पाई ॥
Gurmukẖ joṯ niranṯar pā▫ī.
As Gurmukh, I found the Light deep within the nucleus of my self.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
त्रै गुण मेटे खाईऐ सारु ॥
Ŧarai guṇ mete kẖā▫ī▫ai sār.
Eradicating the three qualities, one eats iron.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨੦॥
नानक तारे तारणहारु ॥२०॥
Nānak ṯāre ṯāraṇhār. ||20||
O Nanak, the Emancipator emancipates. ||20||

ਆਦਿ ਕਉ ਕਵਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਥੀਅਲੇ ਸੁੰਨ ਕਹਾ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੋ ॥
आदि कउ कवनु बीचारु कथीअले सुंन कहा घर वासो ॥
Āḏ ka▫o kavan bīcẖār kathī▫ale sunn kahā gẖar vāso.
What can you tell us about the beginning? In what home did the absolute dwell then?

ਗਿਆਨ ਕੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਕਵਨ ਕਥੀਅਲੇ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਕਵਨ ਨਿਵਾਸੋ ॥
गिआन की मुद्रा कवन कथीअले घटि घटि कवन निवासो ॥
Gi▫ān kī muḏrā kavan kathī▫ale gẖat gẖat kavan nivāso.
What are the ear-rings of spiritual wisdom? Who dwells in each and every heart?

ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ਠੀਗਾ ਕਿਉ ਜਲਾਈਅਲੇ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
काल का ठीगा किउ जलाईअले किउ निरभउ घरि जाईऐ ॥
Kāl kā ṯẖīgā ki▫o jalā▫ī▫ale ki▫o nirbẖa▫o gẖar jā▫ī▫ai.
How can one avoid the attack of death? How can one enter the home of fearlessness?

ਸਹਜ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਆਸਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੇਦੇ ਬੈਰਾਈਐ ॥
सहज संतोख का आसणु जाणै किउ छेदे बैराईऐ ॥
Sahj sanṯokẖ kā āsaṇ jāṇai ki▫o cẖẖeḏe bairā▫ī▫ai.
How can one know the posture of intuition and contentment, and overcome one's adversaries?

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਾਸੋ ॥
गुर कै सबदि हउमै बिखु मारै ता निज घरि होवै वासो ॥
Gur kai sabaḏ ha▫umai bikẖ mārai ṯā nij gẖar hovai vāso.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, egotism and corruption are conquered, and then one comes to dwell in the home of the self within.

ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੋ ॥੨੧॥
जिनि रचि रचिआ तिसु सबदि पछाणै नानकु ता का दासो ॥२१॥
Jin racẖ racẖi▫ā ṯis sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇai Nānak ṯā kā ḏāso. ||21||
One who realizes the Shabad of the One who created the creation - Nanak is his slave. ||21||

ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ ਕਹਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਵੈ ਕਹਾ ਇਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
कहा ते आवै कहा इहु जावै कहा इहु रहै समाई ॥
Kahā ṯe āvai kahā ih jāvai kahā ih rahai samā▫ī.
Where did we come from? Where are we going? Where will we be absorbed?

ਏਸੁ ਸਬਦ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਅਰਥਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ॥
एसु सबद कउ जो अरथावै तिसु गुर तिलु न तमाई ॥
Ės sabaḏ ka▫o jo arthāvai ṯis gur ṯil na ṯamā▫ī.
One who reveals the meaning of this Shabad is the Guru, who has no greed at all.
|
ਕਿਉ ਤਤੈ ਅਵਿਗਤੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥
किउ ततै अविगतै पावै गुरमुखि लगै पिआरो ॥
Ki▫o ṯaṯai avigaṯai pāvai gurmukẖ lagai pi▫āro.
How can one find the essence of the unmanifest reality? How does one become Gurmukh, and enshrine love for the Lord?
|
ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
आपे सुरता आपे करता कहु नानक बीचारो ॥
Āpe surṯā āpe karṯā kaho Nānak bīcẖāro.
He Himself is consciousness, He Himself is the Creator; share with us, Nanak, your wisdom.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
हुकमे आवै हुकमे जावै हुकमे रहै समाई ॥
Hukme āvai hukme jāvai hukme rahai samā▫ī.
By His Command we come, and by His Command we go; by His Command, we merge in absorption.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਈ ॥੨੨॥
पूरे गुर ते साचु कमावै गति मिति सबदे पाई ॥२२॥
Pūre gur ṯe sācẖ kamāvai gaṯ miṯ sabḏe pā▫ī. ||22||
Through the Perfect Guru, live the Truth; through the Word of the Shabad, the state of dignity is attained. ||22||

ਆਦਿ ਕਉ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਥੀਅਲੇ ਸੁੰਨ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਲੀਆ ॥
आदि कउ बिसमादु बीचारु कथीअले सुंन निरंतरि वासु लीआ ॥
Āḏ ka▫o bismāḏ bīcẖār kathī▫ale sunn niranṯar vās lī▫ā.
We can only express a sense of wonder about the beginning. The absolute abided endlessly deep within Himself then.

ਅਕਲਪਤ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਅਲੇ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥
अकलपत मुद्रा गुर गिआनु बीचारीअले घटि घटि साचा सरब जीआ ॥
Akalpaṯ muḏrā gur gi▫ān bīcẖārī▫ale gẖat gẖat sācẖā sarab jī▫ā.
Consider freedom from desire to be the ear-rings of the Guru's spiritual wisdom. The True Lord, the Soul of all, dwells within each and every heart.

ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਅਵਿਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਤਤੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਲਹੈ ॥
गुर बचनी अविगति समाईऐ ततु निरंजनु सहजि लहै ॥
Gur bacẖnī avigaṯ samā▫ī▫ai ṯaṯ niranjan sahj lahai.
Through the Guru's Word, one merges in the absolute, and intuitively receives the immaculate essence.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਰਣੀ ਸੇਵੈ ਸਿਖੁ ਸੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ॥
नानक दूजी कार न करणी सेवै सिखु सु खोजि लहै ॥
Nānak ḏūjī kār na karṇī sevai sikẖ so kẖoj lahai.
O Nanak, that Sikh who seeks and finds the Way does not serve any other.
|
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਜੀਅ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
हुकमु बिसमादु हुकमि पछाणै जीअ जुगति सचु जाणै सोई ॥
Hukam bismāḏ hukam pacẖẖāṇai jī▫a jugaṯ sacẖ jāṇai so▫ī.
Wonderful and amazing is His Command; He alone realizes His Command and knows the true way of life of His creatures.

ਆਪੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਈ ॥੨੩॥
आपु मेटि निरालमु होवै अंतरि साचु जोगी कहीऐ सोई ॥२३॥
Āp met nirālam hovai anṯar sācẖ jogī kahī▫ai so▫ī. ||23||
One who eradicates his self-conceit becomes free of desire; he alone is a Yogi, who enshrines the True Lord deep within. ||23||

ਅਵਿਗਤੋ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਉਪਜੇ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਥੀਆ ॥
अविगतो निरमाइलु उपजे निरगुण ते सरगुणु थीआ ॥
Avigaṯo nirmā▫il upje nirguṇ ṯe sarguṇ thī▫ā.
From His state of absolute existence, He assumed the immaculate form; from formless, He assumed the supreme form.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਲੀਆ ॥
सतिगुर परचै परम पदु पाईऐ साचै सबदि समाइ लीआ ॥
Saṯgur parcẖai param paḏ pā▫ī▫ai sācẖai sabaḏ samā▫e lī▫ā.
By pleasing the True Guru, the supreme status is obtained, and one is absorbed in the True Word of the Shabad.

ਏਕੇ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਏਕਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ॥
एके कउ सचु एका जाणै हउमै दूजा दूरि कीआ ॥
Ėke ka▫o sacẖ ekā jāṇai ha▫umai ḏūjā ḏūr kī▫ā.
He knows the True Lord as the One and only; he sends his egotism and duality far away.
|
ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਥੀਆ ॥
सो जोगी गुर सबदु पछाणै अंतरि कमलु प्रगासु थीआ ॥
So jogī gur sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇai anṯar kamal pargās thī▫ā.
He alone is a Yogi, who realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the lotus of the heart blossoms forth within.

ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ ॥
जीवतु मरै ता सभु किछु सूझै अंतरि जाणै सरब दइआ ॥
Jīvaṯ marai ṯā sabẖ kicẖẖ sūjẖai anṯar jāṇai sarab ḏa▫i▫ā.
If one remains dead while yet alive, then he understands everything; he knows the Lord deep within himself, who is kind and compassionate to all.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥੨੪॥
नानक ता कउ मिलै वडाई आपु पछाणै सरब जीआ ॥२४॥
Nānak ṯā ka▫o milai vadā▫ī āp pacẖẖāṇai sarab jī▫ā. ||24||
O Nanak, he is blessed with glorious greatness; he realizes himself in all beings. ||24||
|
ਸਾਚੌ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਏਕ ਮਇਆ ॥
साचौ उपजै साचि समावै साचे सूचे एक मइआ ॥
Sācẖou upjai sācẖ samāvai sācẖe sūcẖe ek ma▫i▫ā.
We emerge from Truth, and merge into Truth again. The pure being merges into the One True Lord.

ਝੂਠੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਠਵਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
झूठे आवहि ठवर न पावहि दूजै आवा गउणु भइआ ॥
Jẖūṯẖe āvahi ṯẖavar na pāvahi ḏūjai āvā ga▫oṇ bẖa▫i▫ā.
The false come, and find no place of rest; in duality, they come and go.
|
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਇਆ ॥
आवा गउणु मिटै गुर सबदी आपे परखै बखसि लइआ ॥
Āvā ga▫oṇ mitai gur sabḏī āpe parkẖai bakẖas la▫i▫ā.
This coming and going in reincarnation is ended through the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the Lord Himself analyzes and grants His forgiveness.

ਏਕਾ ਬੇਦਨ ਦੂਜੈ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ॥
एका बेदन दूजै बिआपी नामु रसाइणु वीसरिआ ॥
Ėkā beḏan ḏūjai bi▫āpī nām rasā▫iṇ vīsri▫ā.
One who suffers from the disease of duality, forgets the Naam, the source of nectar.
