ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਸੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
अंति कालि पछुतासी अंधुले जा जमि पकड़ि चलाइआ ॥
Anṯ kāl pacẖẖuṯāsī anḏẖule jā jam pakaṛ cẖalā▫i▫ā.
At the last moment, you repent-you are so blind!-when the Messenger of Death seizes you and carries you away.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
सभु किछु अपुना करि करि राखिआ खिन महि भइआ पराइआ ॥
Sabẖ kicẖẖ apunā kar kar rākẖi▫ā kẖin mėh bẖa▫i▫ā parā▫i▫ā.
You kept all your things for yourself, but in an instant, they are all lost.

ਬੁਧਿ ਵਿਸਰਜੀ ਗਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
बुधि विसरजी गई सिआणप करि अवगण पछुताइ ॥
Buḏẖ visarjī ga▫ī si▫āṇap kar avgaṇ pacẖẖuṯā▫e.
Your intellect left you, your wisdom departed, and now you repent for the evil deeds you committed.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
कहु नानक प्राणी तीजै पहरै प्रभु चेतहु लिव लाइ ॥३॥
Kaho Nānak parāṇī ṯījai pahrai parabẖ cẖeṯahu liv lā▫e. ||3||
Says Nanak, O mortal, in the third watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God. ||3||

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ॥
चउथै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा बिरधि भइआ तनु खीणु ॥
Cẖa▫uthai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā biraḏẖ bẖa▫i▫ā ṯan kẖīṇ.
In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your body grows old and weak.

ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਵੈਣ ॥
अखी अंधु न दीसई वणजारिआ मित्रा कंनी सुणै न वैण ॥
Akẖī anḏẖ na ḏīs▫ī vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā kannī suṇai na vaiṇ.
Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words.

ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਾਕਉ ਤਾਣਾ ॥
अखी अंधु जीभ रसु नाही रहे पराकउ ताणा ॥
Akẖī anḏẖ jībẖ ras nāhī rahe parāka▫o ṯāṇā.
Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others.

ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
गुण अंतरि नाही किउ सुखु पावै मनमुख आवण जाणा ॥
Guṇ anṯar nāhī ki▫o sukẖ pāvai manmukẖ āvaṇ jāṇā.
With no virtue within, how can you find peace? The self-willed manmukh comes and goes in reincarnation.

ਖੜੁ ਪਕੀ ਕੁੜਿ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਇ ਚਲੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
खड़ु पकी कुड़ि भजै बिनसै आइ चलै किआ माणु ॥
Kẖaṛ pakī kuṛ bẖajai binsai ā▫e cẖalai ki▫ā māṇ.
When the crop of life has matured, it bends, breaks and perishes; why take pride in that which comes and goes?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
कहु नानक प्राणी चउथै पहरै गुरमुखि सबदु पछाणु ॥४॥
Kaho Nānak parāṇī cẖa▫uthai pahrai gurmukẖ sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇ. ||4||
Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the Gurmukh recognizes the Word of the Shabad. ||4||

ਓੜਕੁ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਹਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨਿ ॥
ओड़कु आइआ तिन साहिआ वणजारिआ मित्रा जरु जरवाणा कंनि ॥
Oṛak ā▫i▫ā ṯin sāhi▫ā vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā jar jarvāṇā kann.
Your breath comes to its end, O my merchant friend, and your shoulders are weighed down by the tyrant of old age.

ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਵਗਣ ਖੜਸਨਿ ਬੰਨਿ ॥
इक रती गुण न समाणिआ वणजारिआ मित्रा अवगण खड़सनि बंनि ॥
Ik raṯī guṇ na samāṇi▫ā vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā avgaṇ kẖaṛsan bann.
Not one iota of virtue came into you, O my merchant friend; bound and gagged by evil, you are driven along.

ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
गुण संजमि जावै चोट न खावै ना तिसु जमणु मरणा ॥
Guṇ sanjam jāvai cẖot na kẖāvai nā ṯis jamaṇ marṇā.
One who departs with virtue and self-discipline is not struck down, and is not consigned to the cycle of birth and death.

ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
कालु जालु जमु जोहि न साकै भाइ भगति भै तरणा ॥
Kāl jāl jam johi na sākai bẖā▫e bẖagaṯ bẖai ṯarṇā.
The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear.

ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
पति सेती जावै सहजि समावै सगले दूख मिटावै ॥
Paṯ seṯī jāvai sahj samāvai sagle ḏūkẖ mitāvai.
He departs with honor, and merges in intuitive peace and poise; all his pains depart.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨॥
कहु नानक प्राणी गुरमुखि छूटै साचे ते पति पावै ॥५॥२॥
Kaho Nānak parāṇī gurmukẖ cẖẖūtai sācẖe ṯe paṯ pāvai. ||5||2||
Says Nanak, when the mortal becomes Gurmukh, he is saved and honored by the True Lord. ||5||2||

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
पहिलै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि पाइआ उदर मंझारि ॥
Pahilai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā har pā▫i▫ā uḏar manjẖār.
In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord places you in the womb.

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿ ॥
हरि धिआवै हरि उचरै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि हरि नामु समारि ॥
Har ḏẖi▫āvai har ucẖrai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā har har nām samār.
You meditate on the Lord, and chant the Lord's Name, O my merchant friend. You contemplate the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥
हरि हरि नामु जपे आराधे विचि अगनी हरि जपि जीविआ ॥
Har har nām jape ārāḏẖe vicẖ agnī har jap jīvi▫ā.
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਰਸੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਥੀਵਿਆ ॥
बाहरि जनमु भइआ मुखि लागा सरसे पिता मात थीविआ ॥
Bāhar janam bẖa▫i▫ā mukẖ lāgā sarse piṯā māṯ thīvi▫ā.
You are born and you come out, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face.

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
जिस की वसतु तिसु चेतहु प्राणी करि हिरदै गुरमुखि बीचारि ॥
Jis kī vasaṯ ṯis cẖeṯahu parāṇī kar hirḏai gurmukẖ bīcẖār.
Remember the One, O mortal, to whom the child belongs. As Gurmukh, reflect upon Him within your heart.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
कहु नानक प्राणी पहिलै पहरै हरि जपीऐ किरपा धारि ॥१॥
Kaho Nānak parāṇī pahilai pahrai har japī▫ai kirpā ḏẖār. ||1||
Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, dwell upon the Lord, who shall shower you with His Grace. ||1||

ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
दूजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु लागा दूजै भाइ ॥
Ḏūjai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā man lāgā ḏūjai bẖā▫e.
In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the mind is attached to the love of duality.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਲੀਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
मेरा मेरा करि पालीऐ वणजारिआ मित्रा ले मात पिता गलि लाइ ॥
Merā merā kar pālī▫ai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā le māṯ piṯā gal lā▫e.
Mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming, "He is mine, he is mine"; so is the child brought up, O my merchant friend.

ਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਏ ॥
लावै मात पिता सदा गल सेती मनि जाणै खटि खवाए ॥
Lāvai māṯ piṯā saḏā gal seṯī man jāṇai kẖat kẖavā▫e.
Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them.

ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਦਿਤੇ ਨੋ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥
जो देवै तिसै न जाणै मूड़ा दिते नो लपटाए ॥
Jo ḏevai ṯisai na jāṇai mūṛā ḏiṯe no laptā▫e.
The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift.
|
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
कोई गुरमुखि होवै सु करै वीचारु हरि धिआवै मनि लिव लाइ ॥
Ko▫ī gurmukẖ hovai so karai vīcẖār har ḏẖi▫āvai man liv lā▫e.
Rare is the Gurmukh who reflects upon, meditates upon, and within his mind, is lovingly attached to the Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
कहु नानक दूजै पहरै प्राणी तिसु कालु न कबहूं खाइ ॥२॥
Kaho Nānak ḏūjai pahrai parāṇī ṯis kāl na kabahūʼn kẖā▫e. ||2||
Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, death never devours you. ||2||

ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਆਲਿ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ॥
तीजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु लगा आलि जंजालि ॥
Ŧījai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā man lagā āl janjāl.
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs.

ਧਨੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
धनु चितवै धनु संचवै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि नामा हरि न समालि ॥
Ḏẖan cẖiṯvai ḏẖan sancẖvai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā har nāmā har na samāl.
You think of wealth, and gather wealth, O my merchant friend, but you do not contemplate the Lord or the Lord's Name.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
हरि नामा हरि हरि कदे न समालै जि होवै अंति सखाई ॥
Har nāmā har har kaḏe na samālai jė hovai anṯ sakẖā▫ī.
You never dwell upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, who will be your only Helper and Support in the end.
