Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਸਿਆਹੁ ॥
जनम जनम की इसु मन कउ मलु लागी काला होआ सिआहु ॥
Janam janam kī is man ka▫o mal lāgī kālā ho▫ā si▫āhu.
The filth of countless incarnations sticks to this mind; it has become pitch black.

ਖੰਨਲੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਉਜਲੀ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣਿ ਪਾਹੁ ॥
खंनली धोती उजली न होवई जे सउ धोवणि पाहु ॥
Kẖanlī ḏẖoṯī ujlī na hova▫ī je sa▫o ḏẖovaṇ pāhu.
The oily rag cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed a hundred times.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਉਲਟੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਤਿ ਬਦਲਾਹੁ ॥
गुर परसादी जीवतु मरै उलटी होवै मति बदलाहु ॥
Gur parsādī jīvaṯ marai ultī hovai maṯ baḏlāhu.
By Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive; his intellect is transformed, and he becomes detached from the world.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
नानक मैलु न लगई ना फिरि जोनी पाहु ॥१॥
Nānak mail na lag▫ī nā fir jonī pāhu. ||1||
O Nanak, no filth sticks to him, and he does not fall into the womb again. ||1||

ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲੀ ਕਾਂਢੀ ਇਕ ਉਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
चहु जुगी कलि काली कांढी इक उतम पदवी इसु जुग माहि ॥
Cẖahu jugī kal kālī kāʼndẖī ik uṯam paḏvī is jug māhi.
Kali Yuga is called the Dark Age, but the most sublime state is attained in this age.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
गुरमुखि हरि कीरति फलु पाईऐ जिन कउ हरि लिखि पाहि ॥
Gurmukẖ har kīraṯ fal pā▫ī▫ai jin ka▫o har likẖ pāhi.
The Gurmukh obtains the fruit, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises; this is his destiny, ordained by the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
नानक गुर परसादी अनदिनु भगति हरि उचरहि हरि भगती माहि समाहि ॥२॥
Nānak gur parsādī an▫ḏin bẖagaṯ har ucẖrahi har bẖagṯī māhi samāhi. ||2||
O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, he worships the Lord night and day; he chants the Lord's Name, and remains absorbed in the Lord's devotional worship. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਲੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥
हरि हरि मेलि साध जन संगति मुखि बोली हरि हरि भली बाणि ॥
Har har mel sāḏẖ jan sangaṯ mukẖ bolī har har bẖalī bāṇ.
O Lord, unite me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, so that with my mouth, I may speak the sublime Word of the Guru's Bani.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਤ ਚਵਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਣਿ ॥
हरि गुण गावा हरि नित चवा गुरमती हरि रंगु सदा माणि ॥
Har guṇ gāvā har niṯ cẖavā gurmaṯī har rang saḏā māṇ.
I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and constantly chant the Lord's Name; through the Guru's Teachings, I enjoy the Lord's Love constantly.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਉਖਧ ਖਾਧਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਤੇ ਦੁਖਾ ਘਾਣਿ ॥
हरि जपि जपि अउखध खाधिआ सभि रोग गवाते दुखा घाणि ॥
Har jap jap a▫ukẖaḏẖ kẖāḏẖi▫ā sabẖ rog gavāṯe ḏukẖā gẖāṇ.
I take the medicine of meditation on the Lord's Name, which has cured all diseases and multitudes of sufferings.

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਹੀ ਜਾਣਿ ॥
जिना सासि गिरासि न विसरै से हरि जन पूरे सही जाणि ॥
Jinā sās girās na visrai se har jan pūre sahī jāṇ.
Those who do not forget the Lord, while breathing or eating - know them to be the perfect servants of the Lord.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਚੂਕੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਣਿ ॥੨੨॥
जो गुरमुखि हरि आराधदे तिन चूकी जम की जगत काणि ॥२२॥
Jo gurmukẖ har ārāḏẖaḏe ṯin cẖūkī jam kī jagaṯ kāṇ. ||22||
Those Gurmukhs who worship the Lord in adoration end their subservience to the Messenger of Death, and to the world. ||22||

ਰੇ ਜਨ ਉਥਾਰੈ ਦਬਿਓਹੁ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗਈ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
रे जन उथारै दबिओहु सुतिआ गई विहाइ ॥
Re jan uthārai ḏabi▫ohu suṯi▫ā ga▫ī vihā▫e.
O man, you have been tormented by a nightmare, and you have passed your life in sleep.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਿਓ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਚਾਉ ॥
सतिगुर का सबदु सुणि न जागिओ अंतरि न उपजिओ चाउ ॥
Saṯgur kā sabaḏ suṇ na jāgi▫o anṯar na upji▫o cẖā▫o.
You did not wake to hear the Word of the True Guru's Shabad; you have no inspiration within yourself.

ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਲਉ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
सरीरु जलउ गुण बाहरा जो गुर कार न कमाइ ॥
Sarīr jala▫o guṇ bāhrā jo gur kār na kamā▫e.
That body burns, which has no virtue, and which does not serve the Guru.

ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲੰਦਾ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
जगतु जलंदा डिठु मै हउमै दूजै भाइ ॥
Jagaṯ jalanḏā diṯẖ mai ha▫umai ḏūjai bẖā▫e.
I have seen that the world is burning, in egotism and the love of duality.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥
नानक गुर सरणाई उबरे सचु मनि सबदि धिआइ ॥१॥
Nānak gur sarṇā▫ī ubre sacẖ man sabaḏ ḏẖi▫ā▫e. ||1||
O Nanak, those who seek the Guru's Sanctuary are saved; within their minds, they meditate on the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
सबदि रते हउमै गई सोभावंती नारि ॥
Sabaḏ raṯe ha▫umai ga▫ī sobẖāvanṯī nār.
Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, the soul-bride is rid of egotism, and she is glorified.

ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਚਲੈ ਤਾ ਬਨਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
पिर कै भाणै सदा चलै ता बनिआ सीगारु ॥
Pir kai bẖāṇai saḏā cẖalai ṯā bani▫ā sīgār.
If she walks steadily in the way of His Will, then she is adorned with decorations.
|
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
सेज सुहावी सदा पिरु रावै हरि वरु पाइआ नारि ॥
Sej suhāvī saḏā pir rāvai har var pā▫i▫ā nār.
Her couch becomes beautiful, and she constantly enjoys her Husband Lord; she obtains the Lord as her Husband.

ਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
ना हरि मरै न कदे दुखु लागै सदा सुहागणि नारि ॥
Nā har marai na kaḏe ḏukẖ lāgai saḏā suhāgaṇ nār.
The Lord does not die, and she never suffers pain; she is a happy soul-bride forever.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥
नानक हरि प्रभ मेलि लई गुर कै हेति पिआरि ॥२॥
Nānak har parabẖ mel la▫ī gur kai heṯ pi▫ār. ||2||
O Nanak, the Lord God unites her with Himself; she enshrines love and affection for the Guru. ||2||

Pauree:

ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥
जिना गुरु गोपिआ आपणा ते नर बुरिआरी ॥
Jinā gur gopi▫ā āpṇā ṯe nar buri▫ārī.
Those who conceal and deny their Guru, are the most evil people.
|
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਨਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪਾਪਿਸਟ ਹਤਿਆਰੀ ॥
हरि जीउ तिन का दरसनु ना करहु पापिसट हतिआरी ॥
Har jī▫o ṯin kā ḏarsan nā karahu pāpisat haṯi▫ārī.
O Dear Lord, let me not even see them; they are the worst sinners and murderers.

ਓਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਧਰਕਟ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
ओहि घरि घरि फिरहि कुसुध मनि जिउ धरकट नारी ॥
Ohi gẖar gẖar firėh kusuḏẖ man ji▫o ḏẖarkat nārī.
They wander from house to house, with impure minds, like wicked, forsaken women.
|
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
वडभागी संगति मिले गुरमुखि सवारी ॥
vadbẖāgī sangaṯ mile gurmukẖ savārī.
But by great good fortune, they may meet the Company of the Holy; as Gurmukhs, they are reformed.

ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੨੩॥
हरि मेलहु सतिगुर दइआ करि गुर कउ बलिहारी ॥२३॥
Har melhu saṯgur ḏa▫i▫ā kar gur ka▫o balihārī. ||23||
O Lord, please be kind and let me meet the True Guru; I am a sacrifice to the Guru. ||23||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
गुर सेवा ते सुखु ऊपजै फिरि दुखु न लगै आइ ॥
Gur sevā ṯe sukẖ ūpjai fir ḏukẖ na lagai ā▫e.
Serving the Guru, peace is produced, and then, one does not suffer in pain.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਕਾਲੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥
जमणु मरणा मिटि गइआ कालै का किछु न बसाइ ॥
Jamaṇ marṇā mit ga▫i▫ā kālai kā kicẖẖ na basā▫e.
The cycle of birth and death is brought to an end, and death has no power over at all.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਚੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
हरि सेती मनु रवि रहिआ सचे रहिआ समाइ ॥
Har seṯī man rav rahi▫ā sacẖe rahi▫ā samā▫e.
His mind is imbued with the Lord, and he remains merged in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿੰਨ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਚਲਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥
नानक हउ बलिहारी तिंन कउ जो चलनि सतिगुर भाइ ॥१॥
Nānak ha▫o balihārī ṯinn ka▫o jo cẖalan saṯgur bẖā▫e. ||1||
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who walk in the Way of the True Guru's Will. ||1||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਧੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰੈ ਸੀਗਾਰ ॥
बिनु सबदै सुधु न होवई जे अनेक करै सीगार ॥
Bin sabḏai suḏẖ na hova▫ī je anek karai sīgār.
Without the Word of the Shabad, purity is not obtained, even though the soul-bride may adorn herself with all sorts of decorations.
