ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੁਸਟਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Sanṯā nāl vair kamāvḏe ḏustā nāl moh pi▫ār.
The slanderers bear enmity to the saints and cultivate love and affection with the sinners.

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਰਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
Agai picẖẖai sukẖ nahī mar jamėh vāro vār.
Here and hereafter, they attain not peace and come and go again and again.

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
Ŧarisnā kaḏe na bujẖ▫ī ḏubiḏẖā ho▫e kẖu▫ār.
Their desire is never stilled and they are ruined by duality.

ਘੜੀ ਮੁੜੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ।
ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥
Muh kāle ṯinā ninḏkā ṯiṯ sacẖai ḏarbār.
The faces of those slanderers are blackened in that true court of the Lord.

ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
Nānak nām vihūṇi▫ā nā urvār na pār. ||2||
Nanak, without the Name, the mortals finds refuge neither at this shore nor at the yonder one.
ਉਰਵਾਰਿ = ਉਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਢੋਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
Jo har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫iḏe se har har nām raṯe man māhī.
They, who meditate on the Lord's name, in their mind, they are imbued with the Lord's God's Name.

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਇਕਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Jinā man cẖiṯ ik arāḏẖi▫ā ṯinā ikas bin ḏūjā ko nāhī.
Whosoever in their heart and mind, dwell on the One Lord, without the One Lord, they recognise not another.
ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ = ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਨਾਲ, ਮਨੋਂ ਚਿਤੋਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਨਾਲ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕਾਗ੍ਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਹੀ ॥
Se▫ī purakẖ har sevḏe jin ḏẖur masṯak lekẖ likẖāhī.
Those persons alone serve the Lord, on whose forehead such a writ is written by the Lord.
ਮਸਤਕਿ = ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ।
(ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਲੇਖ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਝਾਹੀ ॥
Har ke guṇ niṯ gāvḏe har guṇ gā▫e guṇī samjẖāhī.
They chant ever the God's glories, and, singing the praise of the meritorious Lord, instruct their mind.
ਗੁਣੀ = ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ।
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੭॥
vadi▫ā▫ī vadī gurmukẖā gur pūrai har nām samāhī. ||17||
Great is the greatness of the pious persons who, through the Perfect Guru, remain absorbed in the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਮਿ = ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ॥੧੭॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੭॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Saṯgur kī sevā gākẖ▫ṛī sir ḏījai āp gavā▫e.
Hard is the service of the True Guru, as the devotee has to surrender his head and efface his ownself.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਬੜੀ ਔਖੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਸਿਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਾ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਸੇਵਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਨਾ ਮਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਪਵੈ ਸਭ ਥਾਇ ॥
Sabaḏ marėh fir nā marėh ṯā sevā pavai sabẖ thā▫e.
If he dies by Guru's instruction, he dies not again and then his entire service becomes acceptable.

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
Pāras parsi▫ai pāras hovai sacẖ rahai liv lā▫e.
Touching the philosopher's stone, he is transformed into philosopher's stone and remains attached in love with the True Lord.

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਪਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹ ਕੇ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥
Jis pūrab hovai likẖi▫ā ṯis saṯgur milai parabẖ ā▫e.
He, who is so pre-destined, him, the Lord-incarnate, True Guru, comes to meet.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਲੇਖ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਣਤੈ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋ ਪਵੈ ਥਾਇ ॥੧॥
Nānak gaṇṯai sevak nā milai jis bakẖse so pavai thā▫e. ||1||
Nanak, by reckoning the slave meets not with his Lord. He, whom the Lord forgives, becomes acceptable.
ਗਣਤੈ = ਚੰਗੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਲੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸੇਵਕ (ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਮਹਲੁ ਕੁਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
Mahal kumhal na jāṇnī mūrakẖ apṇai su▫ā▫e.
Strayed by their self-interest, the fools distinguish not good from bad.
ਸੁਆਇ = ਸੁਆਰਥ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ। ਸੁਆਉ = ਸੁਅਰਥ।
ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਥਾਂ ਕੁਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ, (ਕਿ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Sabaḏ cẖīnėh ṯā mahal lahėh joṯī joṯ samā▫e.
If they contemplate on the Name, then obtain they, the Lord's presence and their light merges into the Supreme light.

ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਣ ਤਾਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ-ਰੂਪ ਅਸਲ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਣ।
ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਸਭਾ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
Saḏā sacẖe kā bẖa▫o man vasai ṯā sabẖā sojẖī pā▫e.
When the True Lord's fear is ever enshrined in their mind, it is then that they attain all the understanding.

ਜੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਅਦਬ) ਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Saṯgur apṇai gẖar varaṯḏā āpe la▫e milā▫e.
The True Guru abides in their very home, and he himself blends them with their Lord.
ਅਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ = ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ।
ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਭ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
Nānak saṯgur mili▫ai sabẖ pūrī pa▫ī jis no kirpā kare rajā▫e. ||2||
Nanak, he, to whom the Lord shows His mercy and benevolence, meets with the True Guru and all, his desires are fulfilled.

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਗ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਹਤਿਆ ॥
Ḏẖan ḏẖan bẖāg ṯinā bẖagaṯ janā jo har nāmā har mukẖ kėhṯi▫ā.
Blest! blest is the destiny of those saintly persons, who, with their mouth, utter God. and the God's Name.

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਗ ਤਿਨਾ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਣਤਿਆ ॥
Ḏẖan ḏẖan bẖāg ṯinā sanṯ janā jo har jas sarvaṇī suṇṯi▫ā.
Blessed! blessed is the destiny of the holy men, who, with their ears, hear God's praise.

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਜਸ ਕੰਨੀਂ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਗ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਜਨ ਬਣਤਿਆ ॥
Ḏẖan ḏẖan bẖāg ṯinā sāḏẖ janā har kīrṯan gā▫e guṇī jan baṇṯi▫ā.
Blessed! blessed! is the destiny of the good people, who, by singing God's praise, become virtuous persons.

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਧੰਨ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਗ ਤਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਜਿਣਤਿਆ ॥
Ḏẖan ḏẖan bẖāg ṯinā gurmukẖā jo gursikẖ lai man jiṇṯi▫ā.
Auspicious! auspicious is the fortune of the pious persons, who, acting on Guru's instruction, conquer their mind.

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਭ ਦੂ ਵਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਸਿਖ ਪੜਤਿਆ ॥੧੮॥
Sabẖ ḏū vade bẖāg gursikẖā ke jo gur cẖarṇī sikẖ paṛ▫ṯi▫ā. ||18||
The highest of all is the fortune of the Sikhs of the Guru. True Guru sikh fall at the Guru's feet.

ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਆਪਾ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੧੮॥

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
Barahm binḏai ṯis ḏā barahmaṯ rahai ek sabaḏ liv lā▫e.
He, who knows the Lord and fixes his attention on the one Name, keeps intact his Brahman-hood.
ਬਿੰਦੈ = ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ = ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ। ਬ੍ਰਹਮਤੁ = ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਲੱਛਣ। ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ = ਕੇਵਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ।
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ-ਪੁਣਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਨਵ ਨਿਧੀ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਸਿਧੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਲਗੀਆ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਸਾਇ ॥
Nav niḏẖī aṯẖārah siḏẖī picẖẖai lagī▫ā firėh jo har hirḏai saḏā vasā▫e.
The nine treasures and eighteen miraculous powers go after him, who ever keeps enshrined the Lord within his mind.

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਏ, ਨੌ ਨਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ ਫਿਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬੁਝਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Bin saṯgur nā▫o na pā▫ī▫ai bujẖahu kar vīcẖār.
Without the True Guru, the Name is obtained not; understand and reflect thou over it.
ਕਰਿ = ਕਰ ਕੇ।
ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝੋ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
Nānak pūrai bẖāg saṯgur milai sukẖ pā▫e jug cẖār. ||1||
Nanak, through perfect destiny, man meets the True Guru and gathers peace, the four ages through.

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਹ ਚਹੁੰਆਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ) ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਕਿਆ ਗਭਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Ki▫ā gabẖrū ki▫ā biraḏẖ hai manmukẖ ṯarisnā bẖukẖ na jā▫e.
Whether young or whether old, the thirst and hunger of the way-ward person depart not.
ਮਨਮੁਖ = ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ।
ਜਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੁੱਢਾ-ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਰਤਿਆ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਏ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Gurmukẖ sabḏe raṯi▫ā sīṯal ho▫e āp gavā▫e.
The Guru-wards are imbued with the name and are pacified, losing their self-conceit.
ਸੀਤਲੁ = ਠੰਡੇ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤ, ਸੰਤੋਖੀ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਦਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
Anḏar ṯaripaṯ sanṯokẖi▫ā fir bẖukẖ na lagai ā▫e.
Their mind is sated and satiated and they feel not hungry again.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ = ਰੱਜ, ਰਜੇਵਾਂ।
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹਿਰਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਫਿਰ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।
