ਨੰਗਾ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥
नंगा दोजकि चालिआ ता दिसै खरा डरावणा ॥
Nangā ḏojak cẖāli▫ā ṯā ḏisai kẖarā darāvaṇā.
He goes to hell naked, and he looks hideous then.
|
ਕਰਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੧੪॥
करि अउगण पछोतावणा ॥१४॥
Kar a▫ugaṇ pacẖẖoṯāvaṇā. ||14||
He regrets the sins he committed. ||14||

ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥
दइआ कपाह संतोखु सूतु जतु गंढी सतु वटु ॥
Ḏa▫i▫ā kapāh sanṯokẖ sūṯ jaṯ gandẖī saṯ vat.
Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.

ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥
एहु जनेऊ जीअ का हई त पाडे घतु ॥
Ėhu jane▫ū jī▫a kā ha▫ī ṯa pāde gẖaṯ.
This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.

ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ना एहु तुटै न मलु लगै ना एहु जलै न जाइ ॥
Nā ehu ṯutai nā mal lagai nā ehu jalai na jā▫e.
It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥
धंनु सु माणस नानका जो गलि चले पाइ ॥
Ḏẖan so māṇas nānkā jo gal cẖale pā▫e.
Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks.
|
ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
चउकड़ि मुलि अणाइआ बहि चउकै पाइआ ॥
Cẖa▫ukaṛ mul aṇā▫i▫ā bahi cẖa▫ukai pā▫i▫ā.
You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on.

ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥
सिखा कंनि चड़ाईआ गुरु ब्राहमणु थिआ ॥
Sikẖā kann cẖaṛā▫ī▫ā gur barāhmaṇ thi▫ā.
Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru.

ਓਹੁ ਮੁਆ ਓਹੁ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥
ओहु मुआ ओहु झड़ि पइआ वेतगा गइआ ॥१॥
Oh mu▫ā oh jẖaṛ pa▫i▫ā veṯgā ga▫i▫ā. ||1||
But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ||1||

ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥
लख चोरीआ लख जारीआ लख कूड़ीआ लख गालि ॥
Lakẖ cẖorī▫ā lakẖ jārī▫ā lakẖ kūṛī▫ā lakẖ gāl.
He commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of abuses.

ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
लख ठगीआ पहिनामीआ राति दिनसु जीअ नालि ॥
Lakẖ ṯẖagī▫ā pahināmī▫ā rāṯ ḏinas jī▫a nāl.
He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings.

ਤਗੁ ਕਪਾਹਹੁ ਕਤੀਐ ਬਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥
तगु कपाहहु कतीऐ बाम्हणु वटे आइ ॥
Ŧag kapāhahu kaṯī▫ai bāmĥaṇ vate ā▫e.
The thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it.

ਕੁਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
कुहि बकरा रिंन्हि खाइआ सभु को आखै पाइ ॥
Kuhi bakrā rinniĥ kẖā▫i▫ā sabẖ ko ākẖai pā▫e.
The goat is killed, cooked and eaten, and everyone then says, "Put on the sacred thread".

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸੁਟੀਐ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
होइ पुराणा सुटीऐ भी फिरि पाईऐ होरु ॥
Ho▫e purāṇā sutī▫ai bẖī fir pā▫ī▫ai hor.
When it wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੨॥
नानक तगु न तुटई जे तगि होवै जोरु ॥२॥
Nānak ṯag na ṯut▫ī je ṯag hovai jor. ||2||
O Nanak, the thread would not break, if it had any real strength. ||2||

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੂਤੁ ॥
नाइ मंनिऐ पति ऊपजै सालाही सचु सूतु ॥
Nā▫e mani▫ai paṯ ūpjai sālāhī sacẖ sūṯ.
Believing in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord's Praise is the true sacred thread.

ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥
दरगह अंदरि पाईऐ तगु न तूटसि पूत ॥३॥
Ḏargėh anḏar pā▫ī▫ai ṯag na ṯūtas pūṯ. ||3||
Such a sacred thread is worn in the Court of the Lord; it shall never break. ||3||

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
तगु न इंद्री तगु न नारी ॥
Ŧag na inḏrī ṯag na nārī.
There is no sacred thread for the sexual organ, and no thread for woman.
|
ਭਲਕੇ ਥੁਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥
भलके थुक पवै नित दाड़ी ॥
Bẖalke thuk pavai niṯ ḏāṛī.
The man's beard is spat upon daily.
|
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥
तगु न पैरी तगु न हथी ॥
Ŧag na pairī ṯag na hathī.
There is no sacred thread for the feet, and no thread for the hands;
|
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥
तगु न जिहवा तगु न अखी ॥
Ŧag na jihvā ṯag na akẖī.
no thread for the tongue, and no thread for the eyes.
|
ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥
वेतगा आपे वतै ॥
veṯgā āpe vaṯai.
The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread.
|
ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥
वटि धागे अवरा घतै ॥
vat ḏẖāge avrā gẖaṯai.
Twisting the threads, he puts them on others.
|
ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥
लै भाड़ि करे वीआहु ॥
Lai bẖāṛ kare vī▫āhu.
He takes payment for performing marriages;
|
ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲੁ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
कढि कागलु दसे राहु ॥
Kadẖ kāgal ḏase rāhu.
reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way.
|
ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥
सुणि वेखहु लोका एहु विडाणु ॥
Suṇ vekẖhu lokā ehu vidāṇ.
Hear, and see, O people, this wondrous thing.
|
ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
मनि अंधा नाउ सुजाणु ॥४॥
Man anḏẖā nā▫o sujāṇ. ||4||
He is mentally blind, and yet his name is wisdom. ||4||

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਸੀ ॥
साहिबु होइ दइआलु किरपा करे ता साई कार कराइसी ॥
Sāhib ho▫e ḏa▫i▫āl kirpā kare ṯā sā▫ī kār karā▫isī.
One, upon whom the Merciful Lord bestows His Grace, performs His service.
|
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥
सो सेवकु सेवा करे जिस नो हुकमु मनाइसी ॥
So sevak sevā kare jis no hukam manā▫isī.
That servant, whom the Lord causes to obey the Order of His Will, serves Him.
|
ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
हुकमि मंनिऐ होवै परवाणु ता खसमै का महलु पाइसी ॥
Hukam mani▫ai hovai parvāṇ ṯā kẖasmai kā mahal pā▫isī.
Obeying the Order of His Will, he becomes acceptable, and then, he obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
खसमै भावै सो करे मनहु चिंदिआ सो फलु पाइसी ॥
Kẖasmai bẖāvai so kare manhu cẖinḏi▫ā so fal pā▫isī.
One who acts to please His Lord and Master, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires.
|
ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥
ता दरगह पैधा जाइसी ॥१५॥
Ŧā ḏargėh paiḏẖā jā▫isī. ||15||
Then, he goes to the Court of the Lord, wearing robes of honor. ||15||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
गऊ बिराहमण कउ करु लावहु गोबरि तरणु न जाई ॥
Ga▫ū birāhmaṇ ka▫o kar lāvhu gobar ṯaraṇ na jā▫ī.
They tax the cows and the Brahmins, but the cow-dung they apply to their kitchen will not save them.

ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥
धोती टिका तै जपमाली धानु मलेछां खाई ॥
Ḏẖoṯī tikā ṯai japmālī ḏẖān malecẖẖāʼn kẖā▫ī.
They wear their loin cloths, apply ritual frontal marks to their foreheads, and carry their rosaries, but they eat food with the Muslims.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥
अंतरि पूजा पड़हि कतेबा संजमु तुरका भाई ॥
Anṯar pūjā paṛėh kaṯebā sanjam ṯurkā bẖā▫ī.
O Siblings of Destiny, you perform devotional worship indoors, but read the Islamic sacred texts, and adopt the Muslim way of life.

ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥
छोडीले पाखंडा ॥
Cẖẖodīle pākẖandā.
Renounce your hypocrisy!
|
ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਐ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥
नामि लइऐ जाहि तरंदा ॥१॥
Nām la▫i▫ai jāhi ṯaranḏā. ||1||
Taking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall swim across. ||1||

ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥
माणस खाणे करहि निवाज ॥
Māṇas kẖāṇe karahi nivāj.
The man-eaters say their prayers.
|
ਛੁਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥
छुरी वगाइनि तिन गलि ताग ॥
Cẖẖurī vagā▫in ṯin gal ṯāg.
Those who wield the knife wear the sacred thread around their necks.
|
ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥
तिन घरि ब्रहमण पूरहि नाद ॥
Ŧin gẖar barahmaṇ pūrėh nāḏ.
In their homes, the Brahmins sound the conch.
|
ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥
उन्हा भि आवहि ओई साद ॥
Unĥā bẖė āvahi o▫ī sāḏ.
They too have the same taste.
|
ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
कूड़ी रासि कूड़ा वापारु ॥
Kūṛī rās kūṛā vāpār.
False is their capital, and false is their trade.
|
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
कूड़ु बोलि करहि आहारु ॥
Kūṛ bol karahi āhār.
Speaking falsehood, they take their food.
|
ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
सरम धरम का डेरा दूरि ॥
Saram ḏẖaram kā derā ḏūr.
The home of modesty and Dharma is far from them.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
नानक कूड़ु रहिआ भरपूरि ॥
Nānak kūṛ rahi▫ā bẖarpūr.
O Nanak, they are totally permeated with falsehood.
|
ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥
मथै टिका तेड़ि धोती कखाई ॥
Mathai tikā ṯeṛ ḏẖoṯī kakẖā▫ī.
The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists;

ਹਥਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥
हथि छुरी जगत कासाई ॥
Hath cẖẖurī jagaṯ kāsā▫ī.
in their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world!
