ਅਸੰਖ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ bʰagaṫ guṇ gi▫aan veechaar.
Countless are the votaries who reflect over the Lord’s excellences and theology.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਸਤੀ ਅਸੰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ saṫee asaⁿkʰ ḋaaṫaar.
Countless are the men of piety and countless the men of bounty.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਸੂਰ ਮੁਹ ਭਖ ਸਾਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ soor muh bʰakʰ saar.
Countless are the warriors who eat steel with their mouth (bear the brunt on their face).
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਮੋਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ mon liv laa▫é ṫaar.
Countless are the silent sages who center their love and attention on the Lord.
|
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Kuḋraṫ kavaṇ kahaa veechaar.
What power have I to describe Thine doctrines (Thee)?
|
ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥
vaari▫aa na jaavaa ék vaar.
I cannot even once be a sacrifice unto Thee.
|
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥
Jo ṫuḋʰ bʰaavæ saa▫ee bʰalee kaar.
Whatever pleases Thee, is a good pursuit.
|
ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
Ṫoo saḋaa salaamaṫ nirankaar. ||17||
Thou art ever safe and sound, O Formless One!
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ moorakʰ anḋʰ gʰor.
Numberless are the fools, appallingly blind.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਚੋਰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ chor haraamkʰor.
Numberless are the thieves and the devourers of other’s property.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਅਮਰ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜੋਰ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ amar kar jaahi jor.
Numberless depart after establishing their sovereignty by force.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਗਲਵਢ ਹਤਿਆ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ galvadʰ haṫi▫aa kamaahi.
Numberless are those who cut throats and commit murders.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ paapee paap kar jaahi.
Numberless are the sinners who go on committing sins.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਾਹਿ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ kooṛi▫aar kooṛé firaahi.
Numberless are the liars who wander in falsehood.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਮਲੇਛ ਮਲੁ ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ maléchʰ mal bʰakʰ kʰaahi.
Numberless are the dirty-wretch who partake filth as their ration.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ ninḋak sir karahi bʰaar.
Numberless are the slanderers who carry on their heads loads of sins.
|
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Naanak neech kahæ veechaar.
Nanak, the lowly, gives description.
|
ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥
vaari▫aa na jaavaa ék vaar.
I cannot even once be a sacrifice unto Thee.
|
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥
Jo ṫuḋʰ bʰaavæ saa▫ee bʰalee kaar.
What ever pleases Thee, that is a good pursuit.
|
ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
Ṫoo saḋaa salaamaṫ nirankaar. ||18||
Thou art ever safe and sound, O Formless One!
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਨਾਵ ਅਸੰਖ ਥਾਵ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ naav asaⁿkʰ ṫʰaav.
Innumerable are Thine Names and innumerable Thine abodes, O Lord!
|
ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਲੋਅ ॥
Agamm agamm asaⁿkʰ lo▫a.
Innumerable are Thine realms, inaccessible and inscrutable.
|
ਅਸੰਖ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Asaⁿkʰ kėhahi sir bʰaar ho▫é.
Even to call them myriad amounts to carrying load of sin on the head.
|
ਅਖਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
Akʰree naam akʰree saalaah.
Through words Thy Name is uttered and through words Thou art praised.
|
ਅਖਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹ ॥
Akʰree gi▫aan geeṫ guṇ gaah.
Through words the songs of Thy theology and Thine attributes are hymned.
|
ਅਖਰੀ ਲਿਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬਾਣਿ ॥
Akʰree likʰaṇ bolaṇ baaṇ.
In letters the uttered hymns are recorded.
|
ਅਖਰਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ॥
Akʰraa sir sanjog vakʰaaṇ.
Destiny is described with letters on Mortal’s brow.
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Jin éhi likʰé ṫis sir naahi.
But He (God) who scribed these destinies has no scribes on his head (His head bears it not).
|
ਜਿਵ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ਤਿਵ ਤਿਵ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
Jiv furmaa▫é ṫiv ṫiv paahi.
As He ordains, so do men obtain.
|
ਜੇਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Jéṫaa keeṫaa ṫéṫaa naa▫o.
As great is thy creation, so great is Thine celebrity.
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ ॥
viṇ naavæ naahee ko ṫʰaa▫o.
Without Thy Name, there is no place.
|
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

ਭਰੀਐ ਹਥੁ ਪੈਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ ॥
Bʰaree▫æ haṫʰ pær ṫan ḋéh.
The dust of the besmeared hands, feet and other parts of the body,
|
ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ ਉਤਰਸੁ ਖੇਹ ॥
Paaṇee ḋʰoṫæ uṫras kʰéh.
is removed by washing with water.
|
ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Mooṫ paleeṫee kapaṛ ho▫é.
The garment polluted with urine,
|
ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ ਲਈਐ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਇ ॥
Ḋé saabooṇ la▫ee▫æ oh ḋʰo▫é.
is washed clean by applying soap.
|
ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
Bʰaree▫æ maṫ paapaa kæ sang.
The soul defiled with sins,
|
ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
Oh ḋʰopæ naavæ kæ rang.
is cleaned with the love of God’s Name.
|
ਪੁੰਨੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਆਖਣੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Punnee paapee aakʰaṇ naahi.
By mere words of mouth (statements) a man becomes not virtuous or vicious.
|
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ ॥
Kar kar karṇaa likʰ læ jaahu.
The often repeated actions are engraved on the heart.
|
ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ ॥
Aapé beej aapé hee kʰaahu.
Man himself sows and himself reaps (he reaps what he sows).
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੨੦॥
Naanak hukmee aavhu jaahu. ||20||
By God’s Order, O Nanak! Man comes and goes.
|
ਤੀਰਥੁ ਤਪੁ ਦਇਆ ਦਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Ṫiraṫʰ ṫap ḋa▫i▫aa ḋaṫ ḋaan.
Pilgrimage, penance, compassion and alms giving,
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਿਲ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Jé ko paavæ ṫil kaa maan.
bring only a sesame (tiny amount) of honour (merit), if any.
|
ਸੁਣਿਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
Suṇi▫aa mani▫aa man keeṫaa bʰaa▫o.
Whoever heartily hears, believes and loves God’s Name,
|
ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
Anṫargaṫ ṫiraṫʰ mal naa▫o.
obtains salvation by thoroughly bathing in the shrine within himself.
|
ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
Sabʰ guṇ ṫéré mæ naahee ko▫é.
All virtues are Thine, O Lord! I have none.
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
viṇ guṇ keeṫé bʰagaṫ na ho▫é.
Without acquiring the virtues, Lord’s devotional service can not be performed.
|
ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ ॥
Su▫asaṫ aaṫʰ baṇee barmaa▫o.
My obeisance is unto God, who Himself is the creator of world and Brahma etc.
|
ਸਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਣੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥
Saṫ suhaaṇ saḋaa man chaa▫o.
He is true and beautiful and rapture ever abides within His mind.
|
ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
Kavaṇ so vélaa vakʰaṫ kavaṇ kavaṇ ṫʰiṫ kavaṇ vaar.
What the time, what movement, what lunar day, what week day,
|
ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
Kavaṇ sė ruṫee maahu kavaṇ jiṫ ho▫aa aakaar.
and what the season and what month, when the creation came into being?
|
ਵੇਲ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਪੰਡਤੀ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
vél na paa▫ee▫aa pandṫee jė hovæ lékʰ puraaṇ.
The Pundits find not the time, even though it be mentioned in the Puran’s texts.
|
ਵਖਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਾਦੀਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਨਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
vakʰaṫ na paa▫i▫o kaaḋee▫aa jė likʰan lékʰ kuraaṇ.
Nor do the Qazis, who scribe the writing of Quran, Know the time.
|
ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ॥
Ṫʰiṫ vaar naa jogee jaaṇæ ruṫ maahu naa ko▫ee.
Neither the yogi nor any one else knows the lunar day, week day season and the month.
|
ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
Jaa karṫaa sirtʰee ka▫o saajé aapé jaaṇæ so▫ee.
The Creator who creates the world, He Himself Knows (the time).
|
ਕਿਵ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਵ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਰਨੀ ਕਿਵ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
Kiv kar aakʰaa kiv saalaahee ki▫o varnee kiv jaaṇaa.
How to express, how to praise, how to describe and how to know Thee, O Lord?
