Aasaa, Third House, First Mehl:

ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
लख लसकर लख वाजे नेजे लख उठि करहि सलामु ॥
Lakẖ laskar lakẖ vāje neje lakẖ uṯẖ karahi salām.
You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you.

ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
लखा उपरि फुरमाइसि तेरी लख उठि राखहि मानु ॥
Lakẖā upar furmā▫is ṯerī lakẖ uṯẖ rākẖahi mān.
Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you.

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभि निराफल काम ॥१॥
Jāʼn paṯ lekẖai nā pavai ṯāʼn sabẖ nirāfal kām. ||1||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1||
|
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
हरि के नाम बिना जगु धंधा ॥
Har ke nām binā jag ḏẖanḏẖā.
Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil.

ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जे बहुता समझाईऐ भोला भी सो अंधो अंधा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Je bahuṯā samjā▫ī▫ai bẖolā bẖī so anḏẖo anḏẖā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause||
|
ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
लख खटीअहि लख संजीअहि खाजहि लख आवहि लख जाहि ॥
Lakẖ kẖatī▫ah lakẖ sanjī▫ah kẖājėh lakẖ āvahi lakẖ jāhi.
You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go.

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां जीअ किथै फिरि पाहि ॥२॥
Jāʼn paṯ lekẖai nā pavai ṯāʼn jī▫a kithai fir pāhi. ||2||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2||
|
ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
लख सासत समझावणी लख पंडित पड़हि पुराण ॥
Lakẖ sāsaṯ samjẖāvaṇī lakẖ pandiṯ paṛėh purāṇ.
Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him;

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभे कुपरवाण ॥३॥
Jāʼn paṯ lekẖai nā pavai ṯāʼn sabẖe kuparvāṇ. ||3||
but, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3||
|
ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
सच नामि पति ऊपजै करमि नामु करतारु ॥
Sacẖ nām paṯ ūpjai karam nām karṯār.
Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥
अहिनिसि हिरदै जे वसै नानक नदरी पारु ॥४॥१॥३१॥
Ahinis hirḏai je vasai Nānak naḏrī pār. ||4||1||31||
If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
दीवा मेरा एकु नामु दुखु विचि पाइआ तेलु ॥
Ḏīvā merā ek nām ḏukẖ vicẖ pā▫i▫ā ṯel.
The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it.
|
ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥
उनि चानणि ओहु सोखिआ चूका जम सिउ मेलु ॥१॥
Un cẖānaṇ oh sokẖi▫ā cẖūkā jam si▫o mel. ||1||
Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1||
|
ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
लोका मत को फकड़ि पाइ ॥
Lokā maṯ ko fakaṛ pā▫e.
O people, do not make fun of me.
|
ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
लख मड़िआ करि एकठे एक रती ले भाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Lakẖ maṛi▫ā kar ekṯẖe ek raṯī le bẖāhi. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause||
|
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
पिंडु पतलि मेरी केसउ किरिआ सचु नामु करतारु ॥
Pind paṯal merī kesa▫o kiri▫ā sacẖ nām karṯār.
The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony.

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
ऐथै ओथै आगै पाछै एहु मेरा आधारु ॥२॥
Aithai othai āgai pācẖẖai ehu merā āḏẖār. ||2||
Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2||
|
ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥
गंग बनारसि सिफति तुमारी नावै आतम राउ ॥
Gang banāras sifaṯ ṯumārī nāvai āṯam rā▫o.
The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there.
|
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥
सचा नावणु तां थीऐ जां अहिनिसि लागै भाउ ॥३॥
Sacẖā nāvaṇ ṯāʼn thī▫ai jāʼn ahinis lāgai bẖā▫o. ||3||
That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3||
|
ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
इक लोकी होरु छमिछरी ब्राहमणु वटि पिंडु खाइ ॥
Ik lokī hor cẖẖamicẖẖarī barāhmaṇ vat pind kẖā▫e.
The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them!

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥
नानक पिंडु बखसीस का कबहूं निखूटसि नाहि ॥४॥२॥३२॥
Nānak pind bakẖsīs kā kabahūʼn nikẖūtas nāhi. ||4||2||32||
O Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32||

Aasaa, Fourth House, First Mehl:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥
Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥
देवतिआ दरसन कै ताई दूख भूख तीरथ कीए ॥
Ḏeviṯi▫ā ḏarsan kai ṯā▫ī ḏūkẖ bẖūkẖ ṯirath kī▫e.
The Gods, yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines.

ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥
जोगी जती जुगति महि रहते करि करि भगवे भेख भए ॥१॥
Jogī jaṯī jugaṯ mėh rahṯe kar kar bẖagve bẖekẖ bẖa▫e. ||1||
The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1||
|
ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥
तउ कारणि साहिबा रंगि रते ॥
Ŧa▫o kāraṇ sāhibā rang raṯe.
For Your sake, O Lord Master, they are imbued with love.

ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
तेरे नाम अनेका रूप अनंता कहणु न जाही तेरे गुण केते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ŧere nām anekā rūp ananṯā kahaṇ na jāhī ṯere guṇ keṯe. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause||

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥
दर घर महला हसती घोड़े छोडि विलाइति देस गए ॥
Ḏar gẖar mėhlā hasṯī gẖoṛe cẖẖod vilā▫iṯ ḏes ga▫e.
Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands.

ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥
पीर पेकांबर सालिक सादिक छोडी दुनीआ थाइ पए ॥२॥
Pīr pekāʼnbar sālik sāḏik cẖẖodī ḏunī▫ā thā▫e pa▫e. ||2||
The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2||
|
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥
साद सहज सुख रस कस तजीअले कापड़ छोडे चमड़ लीए ॥
Sāḏ sahj sukẖ ras kas ṯajī▫ale kāpaṛ cẖẖode cẖamaṛ lī▫e.
Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins.

ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥
दुखीए दरदवंद दरि तेरै नामि रते दरवेस भए ॥३॥
Ḏukẖī▫e ḏaraḏvanḏ ḏar ṯerai nām raṯe ḏarves bẖa▫e. ||3||
Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3||

ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥
खलड़ी खपरी लकड़ी चमड़ी सिखा सूतु धोती कीन्ही ॥
Kẖalṛī kẖaprī lakṛī cẖamṛī sikẖā sūṯ ḏẖoṯī kīnĥī.
Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths.

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥
तूं साहिबु हउ सांगी तेरा प्रणवै नानकु जाति कैसी ॥४॥१॥३३॥
Ŧūʼn sāhib ha▫o sāʼngī ṯerā paraṇvai Nānak jāṯ kaisī. ||4||1||33||
You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33||
