ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ
पर घरि चीतु मनमुखि डोलाइ ॥
Par gẖar cẖīṯ manmukẖ dolā▫e.
The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife.

ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ
गलि जेवरी धंधै लपटाइ ॥
Gal jevrī ḏẖanḏẖai laptā▫e.
The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥
गुरमुखि छूटसि हरि गुण गाइ ॥५॥
Gurmukẖ cẖẖūtas har guṇ gā▫e. ||5||
The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||

ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ
जिउ तनु बिधवा पर कउ देई ॥
Ji▫o ṯan biḏẖvā par ka▫o ḏe▫ī.
The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;

ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ
कामि दामि चितु पर वसि सेई ॥
Kām ḏām cẖiṯ par vas se▫ī.
she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money,

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
बिनु पिर त्रिपति न कबहूं होई ॥६॥
Bin pir ṯaripaṯ na kabahūʼn ho▫ī. ||6||
but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ
पड़ि पड़ि पोथी सिम्रिति पाठा ॥
Paṛ paṛ pothī simriṯ pāṯẖā.
You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Simritees,

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ
बेद पुराण पड़ै सुणि थाटा ॥
Beḏ purāṇ paṛai suṇ thātā.
and read Vedas and Puraanas until tired;

ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥
बिनु रस राते मनु बहु नाटा ॥७॥
Bin ras rāṯe man baho nātā. ||7||
but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||

ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ
जिउ चात्रिक जल प्रेम पिआसा ॥
Ji▫o cẖāṯrik jal parem pi▫āsā.
As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,

ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ
जिउ मीना जल माहि उलासा ॥
Ji▫o mīnā jal māhi ulāsā.
and as the fish delights in the water,

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
नानक हरि रसु पी त्रिपतासा ॥८॥११॥
Nānak har ras pī ṯaripṯāsā. ||8||11||
Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਵੈ
हठु करि मरै न लेखै पावै ॥
Haṯẖ kar marai na lekẖai pāvai.
One who dies in stubbornness shall not be approved,

ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ
वेस करै बहु भसम लगावै ॥
ves karai baho bẖasam lagāvai.
even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes.

ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
नामु बिसारि बहुरि पछुतावै ॥१॥
Nām bisār bahur pacẖẖuṯāvai. ||1||
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1||

ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ
तूं मनि हरि जीउ तूं मनि सूख ॥
Ŧūʼn man har jī▫o ṯūʼn man sūkẖ.
Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind.

ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
नामु बिसारि सहहि जम दूख ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Nām bisār sahėh jam ḏūkẖ. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Forgetting the Naam, you shall have to endure the pain of death. ||1||Pause||

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ
चोआ चंदन अगर कपूरि ॥
Cẖo▫ā cẖanḏan agar kapūr.
The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor,

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ
माइआ मगनु परम पदु दूरि ॥
Mā▫i▫ā magan param paḏ ḏūr.
and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity.

ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
नामि बिसारिऐ सभु कूड़ो कूरि ॥२॥
Nām bisāri▫ai sabẖ kūṛo kūr. ||2||
Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2||

ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ
नेजे वाजे तखति सलामु ॥
Neje vāje ṯakẖaṯ salām.
Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others

ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ
अधकी त्रिसना विआपै कामु ॥
Aḏẖkī ṯarisnā vi▫āpai kām.
only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
बिनु हरि जाचे भगति न नामु ॥३॥
Bin har jācẖe bẖagaṯ na nām. ||3||
Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3||

ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ
वादि अहंकारि नाही प्रभ मेला ॥
vāḏ ahaʼnkār nāhī parabẖ melā.
Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism.

ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ
मनु दे पावहि नामु सुहेला ॥
Man ḏe pāvahi nām suhelā.
But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥
दूजै भाइ अगिआनु दुहेला ॥४॥
Ḏūjai bẖā▫e agi▫ān ḏuhelā. ||4||
In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4||

ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ
बिनु दम के सउदा नही हाट ॥
Bin ḏam ke sa▫uḏā nahī hāt.
Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ
बिनु बोहिथ सागर नही वाट ॥
Bin bohith sāgar nahī vāt.
Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥
बिनु गुर सेवे घाटे घाटि ॥५॥
Bin gur seve gẖāte gẖāt. ||5||
Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5||

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि वाट दिखावै ॥
Ŧis ka▫o vāhu vāhu jė vāt ḏikẖāvai.
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि सबदु सुणावै ॥
Ŧis ka▫o vāhu vāhu jė sabaḏ suṇāvai.
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि मेलि मिलावै ॥६॥
Ŧis ka▫o vāhu vāhu jė mel milāvai. ||6||
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord's Union. ||6||

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ
वाहु वाहु तिस कउ जिस का इहु जीउ ॥
vāhu vāhu ṯis ka▫o jis kā ih jī▫o.
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ
गुर सबदी मथि अम्रितु पीउ ॥
Gur sabḏī math amriṯ pī▫o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥
नाम वडाई तुधु भाणै दीउ ॥७॥
Nām vadā▫ī ṯuḏẖ bẖāṇai ḏī▫o. ||7||
The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7||

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ
नाम बिना किउ जीवा माइ ॥
Nām binā ki▫o jīvā mā▫e.
Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother?

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ
अनदिनु जपतु रहउ तेरी सरणाइ ॥
An▫ḏin japaṯ raha▫o ṯerī sarṇā▫e.
Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
नानक नामि रते पति पाइ ॥८॥१२॥
Nānak nām raṯe paṯ pā▫e. ||8||12||
O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, honor is attained. ||8||12||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ
हउमै करत भेखी नही जानिआ ॥
Ha▫umai karaṯ bẖekẖī nahī jāni▫ā.
Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
गुरमुखि भगति विरले मनु मानिआ ॥१॥
Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ virle man māni▫ā. ||1||
How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ
हउ हउ करत नही सचु पाईऐ ॥
Ha▫o ha▫o karaṯ nahī sacẖ pā▫ī▫ai.
By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
हउमै जाइ परम पदु पाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ha▫umai jā▫e param paḏ pā▫ī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ
हउमै करि राजे बहु धावहि ॥
Ha▫umai kar rāje baho ḏẖāvėh.
The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.

ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
हउमै खपहि जनमि मरि आवहि ॥२॥
Ha▫umai kẖapėh janam mar āvahi. ||2||
But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ
हउमै निवरै गुर सबदु वीचारै ॥
Ha▫umai nivrai gur sabaḏ vīcẖārai.
Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
चंचल मति तिआगै पंच संघारै ॥३॥
Cẖancẖal maṯ ṯi▫āgai pancẖ sangẖārai. ||3||
One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ
अंतरि साचु सहज घरि आवहि ॥
Anṯar sācẖ sahj gẖar āvahi.
With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.

ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
राजनु जाणि परम गति पावहि ॥४॥
Rājan jāṇ param gaṯ pāvahi. ||4||
Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ
सचु करणी गुरु भरमु चुकावै ॥
Sacẖ karṇī gur bẖaram cẖukẖāvai.
The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
निरभउ कै घरि ताड़ी लावै ॥५॥
Nirbẖa▫o kai gẖar ṯāṛī lāvai. ||5||
They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ
हउ हउ करि मरणा किआ पावै ॥
Ha▫o ha▫o kar marṇā ki▫ā pāvai.
Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain?

ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
पूरा गुरु भेटे सो झगरु चुकावै ॥६॥
Pūrā gur bẖete so jẖagar cẖukẖāvai. ||6||
Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6||

ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ
जेती है तेती किहु नाही ॥
Jeṯī hai ṯeṯī kihu nāhī.
Whatever exists, is in reality nothing.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
गुरमुखि गिआन भेटि गुण गाही ॥७॥
Gurmukẖ gi▫ān bẖet guṇ gāhī. ||7||
Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God. ||7||
