ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुर प्रसादि ॥
Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯ nām karṯā purakẖ nirbẖa▫o nirvair akāl mūraṯ ajūnī saibẖaʼn gur parsāḏ.
There is but one God. True is His Name, Creative His personality and Immortal His form. He is without fear, without enmity, unborn and self-illumined. By Guru's favour He is obtained.

ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
भउ मुचु भारा वडा तोलु ॥
Bẖa▫o mucẖ bẖārā vadā ṯol.
Lord's fear is very great and very heavy.
|
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
मन मति हउली बोले बोलु ॥
Man maṯ ha▫ulī bole bol.
Paltry is man's intellect and the speech, that he delivers.
|
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
सिरि धरि चलीऐ सहीऐ भारु ॥
Sir ḏẖar cẖalī▫ai sahī▫ai bẖār.
Walk by placing Lord's fear on thy head, and bear the weight thereof.

ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
नदरी करमी गुर बीचारु ॥१॥
Naḏrī karmī gur bīcẖār. ||1||
He, on whom is the grace, of the Merciful, through the Guru, meditates on Him.
|
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
भै बिनु कोइ न लंघसि पारि ॥
Bẖai bin ko▫e na langẖas pār.
Without Lord's fear none can cross the world-ocean.
|
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
भै भउ राखिआ भाइ सवारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Bẖai bẖa▫o rākẖi▫ā bẖā▫e savār. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Lord's fear and dread bedecks man's love for Him. Pause.
|
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
भै तनि अगनि भखै भै नालि ॥
Bẖai ṯan agan bẖakẖai bẖai nāl.
The body's fire of fear is burnt away by the dread of God.
|
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
भै भउ घड़ीऐ सबदि सवारि ॥
Bẖai bẖa▫o gẖaṛī▫ai sabaḏ savār.
With Lord's fear and fright, man's speech is fashioned and decorated.
|
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
भै बिनु घाड़त कचु निकच ॥
Bẖai bin gẖāṛaṯ kacẖ nikacẖ.
What is fashioned without Lord's fear is altogether worthless.
|
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
अंधा सचा अंधी सट ॥२॥
Anḏẖā sacẖā anḏẖī sat. ||2||
Useless is the mould and useless the stroke thereon.
|
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
बुधी बाजी उपजै चाउ ॥
Buḏẖī bājī upjai cẖā▫o.
The desire for worldly plays arises in man's intellect.
|
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
सहस सिआणप पवै न ताउ ॥
Sahas si▫āṇap pavai na ṯā▫o.
Inspite of thousands of clevernesses, the heat of Lord's fear comes not unto play.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥
नानक मनमुखि बोलणु वाउ ॥
Nānak manmukẖ bolaṇ vā▫o.
Nanak, the speech of an apostate is nonsense,
|
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
अंधा अखरु वाउ दुआउ ॥३॥१॥
Anḏẖā akẖar vā▫o ḏu▫ā▫o. ||3||1||
and worthless & absurd is his preaching.

ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
डरि घरु घरि डरु डरि डरु जाइ ॥
Dar gẖar gẖar dar dar dar jā▫e.
Place God's fear in thy heart, and let thy home be in His dread. Thy fear of Death, then shall be frightened away.

ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
सो डरु केहा जितु डरि डरु पाइ ॥
So dar kehā jiṯ dar dar pā▫e.
What sort of fear is that, by which the fear of death is frightened?
|
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
तुधु बिनु दूजी नाही जाइ ॥
Ŧuḏẖ bin ḏūjī nāhī jā▫e.
Without Thee, there is no other place of rest.
|
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
जो किछु वरतै सभ तेरी रजाइ ॥१॥
Jo kicẖẖ varṯai sabẖ ṯerī rajā▫e. ||1||
Whatsoever happens, is all according to Thy will.
|
ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
डरीऐ जे डरु होवै होरु ॥
Darī▫ai je dar hovai hor.
Fear, if we have any other fear than that of the Lord.
|
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
डरि डरि डरणा मन का सोरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Dar dar darṇā man kā sor. ||1|| rahā▫o.
To be awed with fear, other than the fear of God, is but mind's tumult. Pause.
|
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
ना जीउ मरै न डूबै तरै ॥
Nā jī▫o marai na dūbai ṯarai.
By itself the soul dies not, neither it is drowned, nor swims across.
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
जिनि किछु कीआ सो किछु करै ॥
Jin kicẖẖ kī▫ā so kicẖẖ karai.
He, Who did make the creation, does everything.
|
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
हुकमे आवै हुकमे जाइ ॥
Hukme āvai hukme jā▫e.
By Lord's order man comes, and by His order he goes.
|
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
आगै पाछै हुकमि समाइ ॥२॥
Āgai pācẖẖai hukam samā▫e. ||2||
Before and after this birth, as well, the mortal remain absorbed in His fiat.
|
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
हंसु हेतु आसा असमानु ॥
Hans heṯ āsā asmān.
In whom there is cruelty, worldly love, desire, and egotism,
|
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
तिसु विचि भूख बहुतु नै सानु ॥
Ŧis vicẖ bẖūkẖ bahuṯ nai sān.
in them, like the water of a stream, there is a great hunger.
|
ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
भउ खाणा पीणा आधारु ॥
Bẖa▫o kẖāṇā pīṇā āḏẖār.
For the Guruwards, Lord's fear is the food, drink, and main-stay.
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
विणु खाधे मरि होहि गवार ॥३॥
viṇ kẖāḏẖe mar hohi gavār. ||3||
Without entertaining Lord's fear the fools perish away.
|
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
जिस का कोइ कोई कोइ कोइ ॥
Jis kā ko▫e ko▫ī ko▫e ko▫e.
If mortal has someone as his own then that some one is very rare indeed.
|
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
सभु को तेरा तूं सभना का सोइ ॥
Sabẖ ko ṯerā ṯūʼn sabẖnā kā so▫e.
All are Thine, and thou, O sublime Lord art of all.
|
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
जा के जीअ जंत धनु मालु ॥
Jā ke jī▫a janṯ ḏẖan māl.
To whom belong all living beings, wealth and property,
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
नानक आखणु बिखमु बीचारु ॥४॥२॥
Nānak ākẖaṇ bikẖam bīcẖār. ||4||2||
Nanak, it is not easy to describe and explain Him.
|
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauri, 1st Guru.
|
ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
माता मति पिता संतोखु ॥
Māṯā maṯ piṯā sanṯokẖ.
I consider wisdom as my mother, contentment as my father,
|
ਸਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
सतु भाई करि एहु विसेखु ॥१॥
Saṯ bẖā▫ī kar ehu visekẖ. ||1||
and truthfulness as my brother. These are my good relations.
|
ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
कहणा है किछु कहणु न जाइ ॥
Kahṇā hai kicẖẖ kahaṇ na jā▫e.
People describe Him, but he cannot be described, in the least.
|
ਤਉ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
तउ कुदरति कीमति नही पाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ŧa▫o kuḏraṯ kīmaṯ nahī pā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Thine omnipotence, O Master cannot be appraised. Pause.
