ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ
खुंढा अंदरि रखि कै देनि सु मल सजाइ ॥
Kẖundẖā anḏar rakẖ kai ḏen so mal sajā▫e.
and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed.

ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ
रसु कसु टटरि पाईऐ तपै तै विललाइ ॥
Ras kas tatar pā▫ī▫ai ṯapai ṯai villā▫e.
What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out.

ਭੀ ਸੋ ਫੋਗੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਦਿਚੈ ਅਗਿ ਜਾਲਾਇ
भी सो फोगु समालीऐ दिचै अगि जालाइ ॥
Bẖī so fog samālī▫ai ḏicẖai ag jālā▫e.
And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਠੈ ਪਤਰੀਐ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
नानक मिठै पतरीऐ वेखहु लोका आइ ॥२॥
Nānak miṯẖai paṯrī▫ai vekẖhu lokā ā▫e. ||2||
Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated! ||2||

ਪਵੜੀ
पवड़ी ॥
Pavṛī.
Pauree:

ਇਕਨਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ
इकना मरणु न चिति आस घणेरिआ ॥
Iknā maraṇ na cẖiṯ ās gẖaṇeri▫ā.
Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੇਰਿਆ
मरि मरि जमहि नित किसै न केरिआ ॥
Mar mar jamėh niṯ kisai na keri▫ā.
They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all!

ਆਪਨੜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਹਨਿ ਚੰਗੇਰਿਆ
आपनड़ै मनि चिति कहनि चंगेरिआ ॥
Āpnaṛai man cẖiṯ kahan cẖangeri▫ā.
In their conscious minds, they call themselves good.

ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ
जमराजै नित नित मनमुख हेरिआ ॥
Jamrājai niṯ niṯ manmukẖ heri▫ā.
The King of the Angels of Death hunts down those self-willed manmukhs, over and over again.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਿਆ
मनमुख लूण हाराम किआ न जाणिआ ॥
Manmukẖ lūṇ hārām ki▫ā na jāṇi▫ā.
The manmukhs are false to their own selves; they feel no gratitude for what they have been given.

ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਭਾਣਿਆ
बधे करनि सलाम खसम न भाणिआ ॥
Baḏẖe karan salām kẖasam na bẖāṇi▫ā.
Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Lord and Master.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵਸੀ
सचु मिलै मुखि नामु साहिब भावसी ॥
Sacẖ milai mukẖ nām sāhib bẖāvsī.
Those who attain the True Lord and chant His Name are pleasing to the Lord.

ਕਰਸਨਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੧॥
करसनि तखति सलामु लिखिआ पावसी ॥११॥
Karsan ṯakẖaṯ salām likẖi▫ā pāvsī. ||11||
They worship the Lord and bow at His Throne. They fulfill their pre-ordained destiny. ||11||

ਮਃ ਸਲੋਕੁ
मः १ सलोकु ॥
Mėhlā 1 salok.
First Mehl, Shalok:

ਮਛੀ ਤਾਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੁ
मछी तारू किआ करे पंखी किआ आकासु ॥
Macẖẖī ṯārū ki▫ā kare pankẖī ki▫ā ākās.
What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird?

ਪਥਰ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ
पथर पाला किआ करे खुसरे किआ घर वासु ॥
Pathar pālā ki▫ā kare kẖusre ki▫ā gẖar vās.
What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch?

ਕੁਤੇ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਕੁਤੀ ਧਾਤੁ
कुते चंदनु लाईऐ भी सो कुती धातु ॥
Kuṯe cẖanḏan lā▫ī▫ai bẖī so kuṯī ḏẖāṯ.
You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog.

ਬੋਲਾ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠ
बोला जे समझाईऐ पड़ीअहि सिम्रिति पाठ ॥
Bolā je samjā▫ī▫ai paṛī▫ah simriṯ pāṯẖ.
You may try to teach a deaf person by reading the Simritees to him, but how will he learn?

ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ
अंधा चानणि रखीऐ दीवे बलहि पचास ॥
Anḏẖā cẖānaṇ rakẖī▫ai ḏīve balėh pacẖās.
You may place a light before a blind man and burn fifty lamps, but how will he see?

ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ
चउणे सुइना पाईऐ चुणि चुणि खावै घासु ॥
Cẖa▫uṇe su▫inā pā▫ī▫ai cẖuṇ cẖuṇ kẖāvai gẖās.
You may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat.

ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ
लोहा मारणि पाईऐ ढहै न होइ कपास ॥
Lohā māraṇ pā▫ī▫ai dẖahai na ho▫e kapās.
You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਏਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
नानक मूरख एहि गुण बोले सदा विणासु ॥१॥
Nānak mūrakẖ ehi guṇ bole saḏā viṇās. ||1||
O Nanak, this is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1||

ਮਃ
मः १ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
First Mehl:

ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ
कैहा कंचनु तुटै सारु ॥
Kaihā kancẖan ṯutai sār.
When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break,

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ
अगनी गंढु पाए लोहारु ॥
Agnī gandẖ pā▫e lohār.
the metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established.

ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ
गोरी सेती तुटै भतारु ॥
Gorī seṯī ṯutai bẖaṯār.
If a husband leaves his wife,

ਪੁਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ
पुतीं गंढु पवै संसारि ॥
Puṯīʼn gandẖ pavai sansār.
their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established.

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ
राजा मंगै दितै गंढु पाइ ॥
Rājā mangai ḏiṯai gandẖ pā▫e.
When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ
भुखिआ गंढु पवै जा खाइ ॥
Bẖukẖi▫ā gandẖ pavai jā kẖā▫e.
When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established.

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ
काला गंढु नदीआ मीह झोल ॥
Kālā gandẖ naḏī▫ā mīh jẖol.
In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established.

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ
गंढु परीती मिठे बोल ॥
Gandẖ parīṯī miṯẖe bol.
There is a bond between love and words of sweetness.

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ
बेदा गंढु बोले सचु कोइ ॥
Beḏā gandẖ bole sacẖ ko▫e.
When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures.

ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ
मुइआ गंढु नेकी सतु होइ ॥
Mu▫i▫ā gandẖ nekī saṯ ho▫e.
Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living.

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ
एतु गंढि वरतै संसारु ॥
Ėṯ gandẖ varṯai sansār.
Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.

ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ
मूरख गंढु पवै मुहि मार ॥
Mūrakẖ gandẖ pavai muhi mār.
The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ
नानकु आखै एहु बीचारु ॥
Nānak ākẖai ehu bīcẖār.
Nanak says this after deep reflection:

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
सिफती गंढु पवै दरबारि ॥२॥
Sifṯī gandẖ pavai ḏarbār. ||2||
through the Lord's Praise, we establish a bond with His Court. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ
पउड़ी ॥
Pa▫oṛī.
Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ
आपे कुदरति साजि कै आपे करे बीचारु ॥
Āpe kuḏraṯ sāj kai āpe kare bīcẖār.
He Himself created and adorned the Universe, and He Himself contemplates it.

ਇਕਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ
इकि खोटे इकि खरे आपे परखणहारु ॥
Ik kẖote ik kẖare āpe parkẖaṇhār.
Some are counterfeit, and some are genuine. He Himself is the Appraiser.

ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਾਰਿ
खरे खजानै पाईअहि खोटे सटीअहि बाहर वारि ॥
Kẖare kẖajānai pā▫ī▫ah kẖote satī▫ah bāhar vār.
The genuine are placed in His Treasury, while the counterfeit are thrown away.

ਖੋਟੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ
खोटे सची दरगह सुटीअहि किसु आगै करहि पुकार ॥
Kẖote sacẖī ḏargėh sutī▫ah kis āgai karahi pukār.
The counterfeit are thrown out of the True Court-unto whom should they complain?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ
सतिगुर पिछै भजि पवहि एहा करणी सारु ॥
Saṯgur picẖẖai bẖaj pavėh ehā karṇī sār.
They should worship and follow the True Guru-this is the lifestyle of excellence.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਖੋਟਿਅਹੁ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ
सतिगुरु खोटिअहु खरे करे सबदि सवारणहारु ॥
Saṯgur kẖoti▫ahu kẖare kare sabaḏ savāraṇhār.
The True Guru converts the counterfeit into genuine; through the Word of the Shabad, He embellishes and exalts us.

ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ
सची दरगह मंनीअनि गुर कै प्रेम पिआरि ॥
Sacẖī ḏargėh mannī▫an gur kai parem pi▫ār.
Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in the True Court.

ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥
गणत तिना दी को किआ करे जो आपि बखसे करतारि ॥१२॥
Gaṇaṯ ṯinā ḏī ko ki▫ā kare jo āp bakẖse karṯār. ||12||
Who can estimate the value of those who have been forgiven by the Creator Lord Himself? ||12||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ
सलोकु मः १ ॥
Salok mėhlā 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾ ਮਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ
हम जेर जिमी दुनीआ पीरा मसाइका राइआ ॥
Ham jer jimī ḏunī▫ā pīrā masā▫ikā rā▫i▫ā.
All the spiritual teachers, their disciples and the rulers of the world shall be buried under the ground.

ਮੇ ਰਵਦਿ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹਾ ਅਫਜੂ ਖੁਦਾਇ
मे रवदि बादिसाहा अफजू खुदाइ ॥
Me ravaḏ bāḏisāhā afjū kẖuḏā▫e.
The emperors shall also pass away; God alone is Eternal.

ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੧॥
एक तूही एक तुही ॥१॥
Ėk ṯūhī ek ṯuhī. ||1||
You alone, Lord, You alone. ||1||

ਮਃ
मः १ ॥
Mėhlā 1.
First Mehl:

ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵਾ ਨਰਾ
न देव दानवा नरा ॥
Na ḏev ḏānvā narā.
Neither the angels, nor the demons, nor human beings,

ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਧਰਾ
न सिध साधिका धरा ॥
Na siḏẖ sāḏẖikā ḏẖarā.
nor the Siddhas, nor the seekers shall remain on the earth.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ
असति एक दिगरि कुई ॥
Asaṯ ek ḏigar ku▫ī.
Who else is there?
