ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਆਸ ॥੨੧॥
धिगु तिन्हा दा जीविआ जिना विडाणी आस ॥२१॥
Ḏẖig ṯinĥā ḏā jīvi▫ā jinā vidāṇī ās. ||21||
Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਦਾ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤਾ ਆਇੜਿਆਂ
फरीदा जे मै होदा वारिआ मिता आइड़िआं ॥
Farīḏā je mai hoḏā vāri▫ā miṯā ā▫iṛi▫āʼn.
Fareed, if I had been there when my friend came, I would have made myself a sacrifice to him.

ਹੇੜਾ ਜਲੈ ਮਜੀਠ ਜਿਉ ਉਪਰਿ ਅੰਗਾਰਾ ॥੨੨॥
हेड़ा जलै मजीठ जिउ उपरि अंगारा ॥२२॥
Heṛā jalai majīṯẖ ji▫o upar angārā. ||22||
Now my flesh is burning red on the hot coals. ||22||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਦਾਖ ਬਿਜਉਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਕਰਿ ਬੀਜੈ ਜਟੁ
फरीदा लोड़ै दाख बिजउरीआं किकरि बीजै जटु ॥
Farīḏā loṛai ḏākẖ bij▫urī▫āʼn kikar bījai jat.
Fareed, the farmer plants acacia trees, and wishes for grapes.

ਹੰਢੈ ਉਂਨ ਕਤਾਇਦਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਪਟੁ ॥੨੩॥
हंढै उंन कताइदा पैधा लोड़ै पटु ॥२३॥
Handẖai unn kaṯā▫iḏā paiḏẖā loṛai pat. ||23||
He is spinning wool, but he wishes to wear silk. ||23||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਏ ਚਿਕੜੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹੁ
फरीदा गलीए चिकड़ु दूरि घरु नालि पिआरे नेहु ॥
Farīḏā galī▫e cẖikaṛ ḏūr gẖar nāl pi▫āre nehu.
Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away.

ਚਲਾ ਭਿਜੈ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਤੁਟੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੪॥
चला त भिजै क्मबली रहां त तुटै नेहु ॥२४॥
Cẖalā ṯa bẖijai kamblī rahāʼn ṯa ṯutai nehu. ||24||
If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24||

ਭਿਜਉ ਸਿਜਉ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਅਲਹ ਵਰਸਉ ਮੇਹੁ
भिजउ सिजउ क्मबली अलह वरसउ मेहु ॥
Bẖija▫o sija▫o kamblī alah varsa▫o mehu.
My blanket is soaked, drenched with the downpour of the Lord's Rain.

ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਜਣਾ ਤੁਟਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੫॥
जाइ मिला तिना सजणा तुटउ नाही नेहु ॥२५॥
Jā▫e milā ṯinā sajṇā ṯuta▫o nāhī nehu. ||25||
I am going out to meet my Friend, so that my heart will not be broken. ||25||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਭੋਲਾਵਾ ਪਗ ਦਾ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ
फरीदा मै भोलावा पग दा मतु मैली होइ जाइ ॥
Farīḏā mai bẖolāvā pag ḏā maṯ mailī ho▫e jā▫e.
Fareed, I was worried that my turban might become dirty.

ਗਹਿਲਾ ਰੂਹੁ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਿਰੁ ਭੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੬॥
गहिला रूहु न जाणई सिरु भी मिटी खाइ ॥२६॥
Gahilā rūhu na jāṇ▫ī sir bẖī mitī kẖā▫e. ||26||
My thoughtless self did not realize that one day, dust will consume my head as well. ||26||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਨਿਵਾਤ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਾਖਿਓੁ ਮਾਂਝਾ ਦੁਧੁ
फरीदा सकर खंडु निवात गुड़ु माखिओ मांझा दुधु ॥
Farīḏā sakar kẖand nivāṯ guṛ mākẖi▫o māʼnjẖā ḏuḏẖ.
Fareed: sugar cane, candy, sugar, molasses, honey and buffalo's milk -

ਸਭੇ ਵਸਤੂ ਮਿਠੀਆਂ ਰਬ ਪੁਜਨਿ ਤੁਧੁ ॥੨੭॥
सभे वसतू मिठीआं रब न पुजनि तुधु ॥२७॥
Sabẖe vasṯū miṯẖī▫āʼn rab na pujan ṯuḏẖ. ||27||
all these things are sweet, but they are not equal to You. ||27||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਲਾਵਣੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੁਖ
फरीदा रोटी मेरी काठ की लावणु मेरी भुख ॥
Farīḏā rotī merī kāṯẖ kī lāvaṇ merī bẖukẖ.
Fareed, my bread is made of wood, and hunger is my appetizer.

ਜਿਨਾ ਖਾਧੀ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਘਣੇ ਸਹਨਿਗੇ ਦੁਖ ॥੨੮॥
जिना खाधी चोपड़ी घणे सहनिगे दुख ॥२८॥
Jinā kẖāḏẖī cẖopṛī gẖaṇe sėhnige ḏukẖ. ||28||
Those who eat buttered bread, will suffer in terrible pain. ||28||

ਰੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਉ
रुखी सुखी खाइ कै ठंढा पाणी पीउ ॥
Rukẖī sukẖī kẖā▫e kai ṯẖandẖā pāṇī pī▫o.
Eat dry bread, and drink cold water.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਨਾ ਤਰਸਾਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੨੯॥
फरीदा देखि पराई चोपड़ी ना तरसाए जीउ ॥२९॥
Farīḏā ḏekẖ parā▫ī cẖopṛī nā ṯarsā▫e jī▫o. ||29||
Fareed, if you see someone else's buttered bread, do not envy him for it. ||29||

ਅਜੁ ਸੁਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸਿਉ ਅੰਗੁ ਮੁੜੇ ਮੁੜਿ ਜਾਇ
अजु न सुती कंत सिउ अंगु मुड़े मुड़ि जाइ ॥
Aj na suṯī kanṯ si▫o ang muṛe muṛ jā▫e.
This night, I did not sleep with my Husband Lord, and now my body is suffering in pain.

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤੁਮ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥
जाइ पुछहु डोहागणी तुम किउ रैणि विहाइ ॥३०॥
Jā▫e pucẖẖahu dohāgaṇī ṯum ki▫o raiṇ vihā▫e. ||30||
Go and ask the deserted bride, how she passes her night. ||30||

ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ
साहुरै ढोई ना लहै पेईऐ नाही थाउ ॥
Sāhurai dẖo▫ī nā lahai pe▫ī▫ai nāhī thā▫o.
She finds no place of rest in her father-in-law's home, and no place in her parents' home either.

ਪਿਰੁ ਵਾਤੜੀ ਪੁਛਈ ਧਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੩੧॥
पिरु वातड़ी न पुछई धन सोहागणि नाउ ॥३१॥
Pir vāṯ▫ṛī na pucẖẖ▫ī ḏẖan sohagaṇ nā▫o. ||31||
Her Husband Lord does not care for her; what sort of a blessed, happy soul-bride is she? ||31||

ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਕੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ
साहुरै पेईऐ कंत की कंतु अगमु अथाहु ॥
Sāhurai pe▫ī▫ai kanṯ kī kanṯ agamm athāhu.
In her father-in-law's home hereafter, and in her parents' home in this world, she belongs to her Husband Lord. Her Husband is Inaccessible and Unfathomable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੩੨॥
नानक सो सोहागणी जु भावै बेपरवाह ॥३२॥
Nānak so sohāgaṇī jo bẖāvai beparvāh. ||32||
O Nanak, she is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to her Carefree Lord. ||32||

ਨਾਤੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੰਬਹੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਆਇ ਨਚਿੰਦੁ
नाती धोती स्मबही सुती आइ नचिंदु ॥
Nāṯī ḏẖoṯī sambhī suṯī ā▫e nacẖinḏ.
Bathing, washing and decorating herself, she comes and sleeps without anxiety.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਿੰਙੁ ਦੀ ਗਈ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੩੩॥
फरीदा रही सु बेड़ी हिंङु दी गई कथूरी गंधु ॥३३॥
Farīḏā rahī so beṛī hiń ḏī ga▫ī kathūrī ganḏẖ. ||33||
Fareed, she still smells like asafetida; the fragrance of musk is gone. ||33||

ਜੋਬਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨਾ ਡਰਾਂ ਜੇ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾਇ
जोबन जांदे ना डरां जे सह प्रीति न जाइ ॥
Joban jāʼnḏe nā darāʼn je sah parīṯ na jā▫e.
I am not afraid of losing my youth, as long as I do not lose the Love of my Husband Lord.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿਤੀ ਜੋਬਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਕਿ ਗਏ ਕੁਮਲਾਇ ॥੩੪॥
फरीदा कितीं जोबन प्रीति बिनु सुकि गए कुमलाइ ॥३४॥
Farīḏā kiṯīʼn joban parīṯ bin suk ga▫e kumlā▫e. ||34||
Fareed, so many youths, without His Love, have dried up and withered away. ||34||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਖਟੋਲਾ ਵਾਣੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਛਾਵਣ ਲੇਫੁ
फरीदा चिंत खटोला वाणु दुखु बिरहि विछावण लेफु ॥
Farīḏā cẖinṯ kẖatolā vāṇ ḏukẖ birėh vicẖẖāvaṇ lef.
Fareed, anxiety is my bed, pain is my mattress, and the pain of separation is my blanket and quilt.

ਏਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਚੇ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੩੫॥
एहु हमारा जीवणा तू साहिब सचे वेखु ॥३५॥
Ėhu hamārā jīvṇā ṯū sāhib sacẖe vekẖ. ||35||
Behold, this is my life, O my True Lord and Master. ||35||

ਬਿਰਹਾ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤੂ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ
बिरहा बिरहा आखीऐ बिरहा तू सुलतानु ॥
Birhā birhā ākẖī▫ai birhā ṯū sulṯān.
Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਮਸਾਨੁ ॥੩੬॥
फरीदा जितु तनि बिरहु न ऊपजै सो तनु जाणु मसानु ॥३६॥
Farīḏā jiṯ ṯan birahu na ūpjai so ṯan jāṇ masān. ||36||
Fareed, that body, within which love of the Lord does not well up - look upon that body as a cremation ground. ||36||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਗੰਦਲਾ ਧਰੀਆਂ ਖੰਡੁ ਲਿਵਾੜਿ
फरीदा ए विसु गंदला धरीआं खंडु लिवाड़ि ॥
Farīḏā e vis ganḏlā ḏẖarī▫āʼn kẖand livāṛ.
Fareed, these are poisonous sprouts coated with sugar.

ਇਕਿ ਰਾਹੇਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਇਕਿ ਰਾਧੀ ਗਏ ਉਜਾੜਿ ॥੩੭॥
इकि राहेदे रहि गए इकि राधी गए उजाड़ि ॥३७॥
Ik rāheḏe rėh ga▫e ik rāḏẖī ga▫e ujāṛ. ||37||
Some die planting them, and some are ruined, harvesting and enjoying them. ||37||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਹੰਢਿ ਕੈ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੰਮਿ
फरीदा चारि गवाइआ हंढि कै चारि गवाइआ समि ॥
Farīḏā cẖār gavā▫i▫ā handẖ kai cẖār gavā▫i▫ā samm.
Fareed, the hours of the day are lost wandering around, and the hours of the night are lost in sleep.

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਤੂ ਆਂਹੋ ਕੇਰ੍ਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੩੮॥
लेखा रबु मंगेसीआ तू आंहो केर्हे कमि ॥३८॥
Lekẖā rab mangesī▫ā ṯū āʼnho kerĥe kamm. ||38||
God will call for your account, and ask you why you came into this world. ||38||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਜੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਉ ਡਿਠੋ ਘੜੀਆਲੁ
फरीदा दरि दरवाजै जाइ कै किउ डिठो घड़ीआलु ॥
Farīḏā ḏar ḏarvājai jā▫e kai ki▫o diṯẖo gẖaṛī▫āl.
Fareed, you have gone to the Lord's Door. Have you seen the gong there?

ਏਹੁ ਨਿਦੋਸਾਂ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਹਮ ਦੋਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩੯॥
एहु निदोसां मारीऐ हम दोसां दा किआ हालु ॥३९॥
Ėhu niḏosāʼn mārī▫ai ham ḏosāʼn ḏā ki▫ā hāl. ||39||
This blameless object is being beaten - imagine what is in store for us sinners! ||39||

ਘੜੀਏ ਘੜੀਏ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਪਹਰੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ
घड़ीए घड़ीए मारीऐ पहरी लहै सजाइ ॥
Gẖaṛī▫e gẖaṛī▫e mārī▫ai pahrī lahai sajā▫e.
Each and every hour, it is beaten; it is punished every day.

ਸੋ ਹੇੜਾ ਘੜੀਆਲ ਜਿਉ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪੦॥
सो हेड़ा घड़ीआल जिउ डुखी रैणि विहाइ ॥४०॥
So heṛā gẖaṛī▫āl ji▫o dukẖī raiṇ vihā▫e. ||40||
This beautiful body is like the gong; it passes the night in pain. ||40||
