ਗੋਤਮੁ ਤਪਾ ਅਹਿਲਿਆ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਲੁਭਾਇਆ ॥
गोतमु तपा अहिलिआ इसत्री तिसु देखि इंद्रु लुभाइआ ॥
Goṯam ṯapā ahili▫ā isṯarī ṯis ḏekẖ inḏar lubẖā▫i▫ā.
Ahalyaa was the wife of Gautam the seer. Seeing her, Indra was enticed.

ਸਹਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਚਿਹਨ ਭਗ ਹੂਏ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
सहस सरीर चिहन भग हूए ता मनि पछोताइआ ॥१॥
Sahas sarīr cẖihan bẖag hū▫e ṯā man pacẖẖoṯā▫i▫ā. ||1||
When he received a thousand marks of disgrace on his body, then he felt regret in his mind. ||1||
|
ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਭੂਲੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
कोई जाणि न भूलै भाई ॥
Ko▫ī jāṇ na bẖūlai bẖā▫ī.
O Siblings of Destiny, no one knowingly makes mistakes.
|
ਸੋ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
सो भूलै जिसु आपि भुलाए बूझै जिसै बुझाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
So bẖūlai jis āp bẖulā▫e būjẖai jisai bujẖā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
He alone is mistaken, whom the Lord Himself makes so. He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand. ||1||Pause||

ਤਿਨਿ ਹਰੀ ਚੰਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੈ ਕਾਗਦਿ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
तिनि हरी चंदि प्रिथमी पति राजै कागदि कीम न पाई ॥
Ŧin harī cẖanḏ parithmī paṯ rājai kāgaḏ kīm na pā▫ī.
Harichand, the king and ruler of his land, did not appreciate the value of his pre-ordained destiny.

ਅਉਗਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਤ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਕਿਉ ਨੇਖਾਸਿ ਬਿਕਾਈ ॥੨॥
अउगणु जाणै त पुंन करे किउ किउ नेखासि बिकाई ॥२॥
A▫ugaṇ jāṇai ṯa punn kare ki▫o ki▫o nekẖās bikā▫ī. ||2||
If he had known that it was a mistake, he would not have made such a show of giving in charity, and he would not have been sold in the market. ||2||
|
ਕਰਉ ਅਢਾਈ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਂਗੀ ਬਾਵਨ ਰੂਪਿ ਬਹਾਨੈ ॥
करउ अढाई धरती मांगी बावन रूपि बहानै ॥
Kara▫o adẖā▫ī ḏẖarṯī māʼngī bāvan rūp bahānai.
The Lord took the form of a dwarf, and asked for some land.
|
ਕਿਉ ਪਇਆਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਉ ਛਲੀਐ ਜੇ ਬਲਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੩॥
किउ पइआलि जाइ किउ छलीऐ जे बलि रूपु पछानै ॥३॥
Ki▫o pa▫i▫āl jā▫e ki▫o cẖẖalī▫ai je bal rūp pacẖẖānai. ||3||
If Bal the king has recognized Him, he would not have been deceived, and sent to the underworld. ||3||
|
ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਦੇ ਮਤੀ ਬਰਜਿ ਬਿਆਸਿ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਇਆ ॥
राजा जनमेजा दे मतीं बरजि बिआसि पड़्हाइआ ॥
Rājā janmejā ḏe maṯīʼn baraj bi▫ās paṛĥā▫i▫ā.
Vyaas taught and warned the king Janmayjaa not to do three things.

ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਗ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਘਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
तिन्हि करि जग अठारह घाए किरतु न चलै चलाइआ ॥४॥
Ŧiniĥ kar jag aṯẖārah gẖā▫e kiraṯ na cẖalai cẖalā▫i▫ā. ||4||
But he performed the sacred feast and killed eighteen Brahmins; the record of one's past deeds cannot be erased. ||4||
|
ਗਣਤ ਨ ਗਣੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
गणत न गणीं हुकमु पछाणा बोली भाइ सुभाई ॥
Gaṇaṯ na gaṇīʼn hukam pacẖẖāṇā bolī bẖā▫e subẖā▫ī.
I do not try to calculate the account; I accept the Hukam of God's Command. I speak with intuitive love and respect.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥
जो किछु वरतै तुधै सलाहीं सभ तेरी वडिआई ॥५॥
Jo kicẖẖ varṯai ṯuḏẖai salāhīʼn sabẖ ṯerī vadi▫ā▫ī. ||5||
No matter what happens, I will praise the Lord. It is all Your Glorious Greatness, O Lord. ||5||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
गुरमुखि अलिपतु लेपु कदे न लागै सदा रहै सरणाई ॥
Gurmukẖ alipaṯ lep kaḏe na lāgai saḏā rahai sarṇā▫ī.
The Gurmukh remains detached; filth never attaches itself to him. He remains forever in God's Sanctuary.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਆਗੈ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥੬॥
मनमुखु मुगधु आगै चेतै नाही दुखि लागै पछुताई ॥६॥
Manmukẖ mugaḏẖ āgai cẖeṯai nāhī ḏukẖ lāgai pacẖẖuṯā▫ī. ||6||
The foolish self-willed manmukh does not think of the future; he is overtaken by pain, and then he regrets. ||6||
|
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀਐ ॥
आपे करे कराए करता जिनि एह रचना रचीऐ ॥
Āpe kare karā▫e karṯā jin eh racẖnā racẖī▫ai.
The Creator who created this creation acts, and causes all to act.
|
ਹਰਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੇ ਪੈ ਪਚੀਐ ॥੭॥
हरि अभिमानु न जाई जीअहु अभिमाने पै पचीऐ ॥७॥
Har abẖimān na jā▫ī jī▫ahu abẖimāne pai pacẖī▫ai. ||7||
O Lord, egotistical pride does not depart from the soul. Falling into egotistical pride, one is ruined. ||7||
|
ਭੁਲਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ॥
भुलण विचि कीआ सभु कोई करता आपि न भुलै ॥
Bẖulaṇ vicẖ kī▫ā sabẖ ko▫ī karṯā āp na bẖulai.
Everyone makes mistakes; only the Creator does not make mistakes.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਘੁਲੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
नानक सचि नामि निसतारा को गुर परसादि अघुलै ॥८॥४॥
Nānak sacẖ nām nisṯārā ko gur parsāḏ agẖulai. ||8||4||
O Nanak, salvation comes through the True Name. By Guru's Grace, one is released. ||8||4||

ਆਖਣਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
आखणा सुनणा नामु अधारु ॥
Ākẖ▫ṇā sunṇā nām aḏẖār.
To chant and listen to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my Support.
|
ਧੰਧਾ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥
धंधा छुटकि गइआ वेकारु ॥
Ḏẖanḏẖā cẖẖutak ga▫i▫ā vekār.
Worthless entanglements are ended and gone.
|
ਜਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
जिउ मनमुखि दूजै पति खोई ॥
Ji▫o manmukẖ ḏūjai paṯ kẖo▫ī.
The self-willed manmukh, caught in duality, loses his honor.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
बिनु नावै मै अवरु न कोई ॥१॥
Bin nāvai mai avar na ko▫ī. ||1||
Except for the Name, I have no other at all. ||1||
|
ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
सुणि मन अंधे मूरख गवार ॥
Suṇ man anḏẖe mūrakẖ gavār.
Listen, O blind, foolish, idiotic mind.
|
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਲਾਜ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
आवत जात लाज नही लागै बिनु गुर बूडै बारो बार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Āvaṯ jāṯ lāj nahī lāgai bin gur būdai bāro bār. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Aren't you ashamed of your comings and goings in reincarnation? Without the Guru, you shall drown, over and over again. ||1||Pause||
|
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
इसु मन माइआ मोहि बिनासु ॥
Is man mā▫i▫ā mohi binās.
This mind is ruined by its attachment to Maya.
|
ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਸੁ ॥
धुरि हुकमु लिखिआ तां कहीऐ कासु ॥
Ḏẖur hukam likẖi▫ā ṯāʼn kahī▫ai kās.
The Command of the Primal Lord is pre-ordained. Before whom should I cry?
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
गुरमुखि विरला चीन्है कोई ॥
Gurmukẖ virlā cẖīnĥai ko▫ī.
Only a few, as Gurmukh, understand this.
|
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
नाम बिहूना मुकति न होई ॥२॥
Nām bihūnā mukaṯ na ho▫ī. ||2||
Without the Naam, no one is liberated. ||2||
|
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਡੋਲੈ ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ॥
भ्रमि भ्रमि डोलै लख चउरासी ॥
Bẖaram bẖaram dolai lakẖ cẖa▫urāsī.
People wander lost, staggering and stumbling through 8.4 million incarnations.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
बिनु गुर बूझे जम की फासी ॥
Bin gur būjẖe jam kī fāsī.
Without knowing the Guru, they cannot escape the noose of Death.
|
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
इहु मनूआ खिनु खिनु ऊभि पइआलि ॥
Ih manū▫ā kẖin kẖin ūbẖ pa▫i▫āl.
This mind, from one moment to the next, goes from the heavens to the underworld.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
गुरमुखि छूटै नामु सम्हालि ॥३॥
Gurmukẖ cẖẖūtai nām samĥāl. ||3||
The Gurmukh contemplates the Naam, and is released. ||3||
|
ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
आपे सदे ढिल न होइ ॥
Āpe saḏe dẖil na ho▫e.
When God sends His Summons, there is no time to delay.
|
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
सबदि मरै सहिला जीवै सोइ ॥
Sabaḏ marai sahilā jīvai so▫e.
When one dies in the Word of the Shabad, he lives in peace.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
बिनु गुर सोझी किसै न होइ ॥
Bin gur sojẖī kisai na ho▫e.
Without the Guru, no one understands.
|
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
आपे करै करावै सोइ ॥४॥
Āpe karai karāvai so▫e. ||4||
The Lord Himself acts, and inspires all to act. ||4||
|
ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
झगड़ु चुकावै हरि गुण गावै ॥
Jẖagaṛ cẖukẖāvai har guṇ gāvai.
Inner conflict comes to an end, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
|
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
पूरा सतिगुरु सहजि समावै ॥
Pūrā saṯgur sahj samāvai.
Through the Perfect True Guru, one is intuitively absorbed into the Lord.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਤਉ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥
इहु मनु डोलत तउ ठहरावै ॥
Ih man dolaṯ ṯa▫o ṯẖėhrāvai.
This wobbling, unsteady mind is stabilized,
|
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
सचु करणी करि कार कमावै ॥५॥
Sacẖ karṇī kar kār kamāvai. ||5||
and one lives the lifestyle of true actions. ||5||
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੂਠਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
अंतरि जूठा किउ सुचि होइ ॥
Anṯar jūṯẖā ki▫o sucẖ ho▫e.
If someone is false within his own self, then how can he be pure?
|
ਸਬਦੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
सबदी धोवै विरला कोइ ॥
Sabḏī ḏẖovai virlā ko▫e.
How rare are those who wash with the Shabad.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
गुरमुखि कोई सचु कमावै ॥
Gurmukẖ ko▫ī sacẖ kamāvai.
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, live the Truth.
|
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
आवणु जाणा ठाकि रहावै ॥६॥
Āvaṇ jāṇā ṯẖāk rahāvai. ||6||
Their comings and goings in reincarnation are over and done. ||6||
