ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
सलोक मः १ ॥
Salok mėhlā 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:
|
ਰਾਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
राती कालु घटै दिनि कालु ॥
Rāṯī kāl gẖatai ḏin kāl.
Through the night the time ticks away; through the day the time ticks away.
|
ਛਿਜੈ ਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਲੁ ॥
छिजै काइआ होइ परालु ॥
Cẖẖijai kā▫i▫ā ho▫e parāl.
The body wears away and turns to straw.
|
ਵਰਤਣਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
वरतणि वरतिआ सरब जंजालु ॥
varṯaṇ varṯi▫ā sarab janjāl.
All are involved and entangled in worldly entanglements.
|
ਭੁਲਿਆ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਪ ਤਾਲੁ ॥
भुलिआ चुकि गइआ तप तालु ॥
Bẖuli▫ā cẖuk ga▫i▫ā ṯap ṯāl.
The mortal has mistakenly renounced the way of service.
|
ਅੰਧਾ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਪਇਆ ਝੇਰਿ ॥
अंधा झखि झखि पइआ झेरि ॥
Anḏẖā jẖakẖ jẖakẖ pa▫i▫ā jẖer.
The blind fool is caught in conflict, bothered and bewildered.
|
ਪਿਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਲਿਆਵਹਿ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
पिछै रोवहि लिआवहि फेरि ॥
Picẖẖai rovėh li▫āvėh fer.
Those who weep after someone has died - can they bring him back to life?
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
बिनु बूझे किछु सूझै नाही ॥
Bin būjẖe kicẖẖ sūjẖai nāhī.
Without realization, nothing can be understood.
|
ਮੋਇਆ ਰੋਂਹਿ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਂਹੀ ॥
मोइआ रोंहि रोंदे मरि जांहीं ॥
Mo▫i▫ā roʼnhi roʼnḏe mar jāʼnhīʼn.
The weepers who weep for the dead shall themselves die as well.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
नानक खसमै एवै भावै ॥
Nānak kẖasmai evai bẖāvai.
O Nanak, this is the Will of our Lord and Master.
|
ਸੇਈ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥
सेई मुए जिन चिति न आवै ॥१॥
Se▫ī mu▫e jin cẖiṯ na āvai. ||1||
Those who do not remember the Lord, are dead. ||1||

ਮੁਆ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਈ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਾਦੀ ॥
मुआ पिआरु प्रीति मुई मुआ वैरु वादी ॥
Mu▫ā pi▫ār parīṯ mu▫ī mu▫ā vair vāḏī.
Love dies, and affection dies; hatred and strife die.
|
ਵੰਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਰੂਪੁ ਵਿਣਸਿਆ ਦੁਖੀ ਦੇਹ ਰੁਲੀ ॥
वंनु गइआ रूपु विणसिआ दुखी देह रुली ॥
vann ga▫i▫ā rūp viṇsi▫ā ḏukẖī ḏeh rulī.
The color fades, and beauty vanishes; the body suffers and collapses.
|
ਕਿਥਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਕਹ ਗਇਆ ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਸੀਓ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੀ ॥
किथहु आइआ कह गइआ किहु न सीओ किहु सी ॥
Kithhu ā▫i▫ā kah ga▫i▫ā kihu na sī▫o kihu sī.
Where did he come from? Where is he going? Did he exist or not?
|
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਲਾ ਗੋਈਆ ਕੀਤਾ ਚਾਉ ਰਲੀ ॥
मनि मुखि गला गोईआ कीता चाउ रली ॥
Man mukẖ galā go▫ī▫ā kīṯā cẖā▫o ralī.
The self-willed manmukh made empty boasts, indulging in parties and pleasures.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ॥੨॥
नानक सचे नाम बिनु सिर खुर पति पाटी ॥२॥
Nānak sacẖe nām bin sir kẖur paṯ pātī. ||2||
O Nanak, without the True Name, his honor is torn away, from head to foot. ||2||
|
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
अम्रित नामु सदा सुखदाता अंते होइ सखाई ॥
Amriṯ nām saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa anṯe ho▫e sakẖā▫ī.
The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is forever the Giver of peace. It shall be your Help and Support in the end.
|
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗਤੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
बाझु गुरू जगतु बउराना नावै सार न पाई ॥
Bājẖ gurū jagaṯ ba▫urānā nāvai sār na pā▫ī.
Without the Guru, the world is insane. It does not appreciate the worth of the Name.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
सतिगुरु सेवहि से परवाणु जिन्ह जोती जोति मिलाई ॥
Saṯgur sevėh se parvāṇ jinĥ joṯī joṯ milā▫ī.
Those who serve the True Guru are accepted and approved. Their light merges into the Light.
|
ਸੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
सो साहिबु सो सेवकु तेहा जिसु भाणा मंनि वसाई ॥
So sāhib so sevak ṯehā jis bẖāṇā man vasā▫ī.
That servant who enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind, becomes just like his Lord and Master.

ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
आपणै भाणै कहु किनि सुखु पाइआ अंधा अंधु कमाई ॥
Āpṇai bẖāṇai kaho kin sukẖ pā▫i▫ā anḏẖā anḏẖ kamā▫ī.
Tell me, who has ever found peace by following his own will? The blind act in blindness.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਦੇ ਹੀ ਰਜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
बिखिआ कदे ही रजै नाही मूरख भुख न जाई ॥
Bikẖi▫ā kaḏe hī rajai nāhī mūrakẖ bẖukẖ na jā▫ī.
No one is ever satisfied and fulfilled by evil and corruption. The hunger of the fool is not satisfied.

ਦੂਜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਲਗਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
दूजै सभु को लगि विगुता बिनु सतिगुर बूझ न पाई ॥
Ḏūjai sabẖ ko lag viguṯā bin saṯgur būjẖ na pā▫ī.
Attached to duality, all are ruined; without the True Guru, there is no understanding.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
सतिगुरु सेवे सो सुखु पाए जिस नो किरपा करे रजाई ॥२०॥
Saṯgur seve so sukẖ pā▫e jis no kirpā kare rajā▫ī. ||20||
Those who serve the True Guru find peace; they are blessed with Grace by the Will of the Lord. ||20||
|
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
सलोक मः १ ॥
Salok mėhlā 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੇ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
सरमु धरमु दुइ नानका जे धनु पलै पाइ ॥
Saram ḏẖaram ḏu▫e nānkā je ḏẖan palai pā▫e.
Modesty and righteousness both, O Nanak, are qualities of those who are blessed with true wealth.
|
ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਇ ॥
सो धनु मित्रु न कांढीऐ जितु सिरि चोटां खाइ ॥
So ḏẖan miṯar na kāʼndẖī▫ai jiṯ sir cẖotāʼn kẖā▫e.
Do not refer to that wealth as your friend, which leads you to get your head beaten.
|
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥
जिन कै पलै धनु वसै तिन का नाउ फकीर ॥
Jin kai palai ḏẖan vasai ṯin kā nā▫o fakīr.
Those who possess only this worldly wealth are known as paupers.
|
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥
जिन्ह कै हिरदै तू वसहि ते नर गुणी गहीर ॥१॥
Jinĥ kai hirḏai ṯū vasėh ṯe nar guṇī gahīr. ||1||
But those, within whose hearts You dwell, O Lord - those people are oceans of virtue. ||1||
|
ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਦੁਖੀ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹੇੜੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥
दुखी दुनी सहेड़ीऐ जाइ त लगहि दुख ॥
Ḏukẖī ḏunī saheṛī▫ai jā▫e ṯa lagėh ḏukẖ.
Worldly possessions are obtained by pain and suffering; when they are gone, they leave pain and suffering.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਲਥੀ ਭੁਖ ॥
नानक सचे नाम बिनु किसै न लथी भुख ॥
Nānak sacẖe nām bin kisai na lathī bẖukẖ.
O Nanak, without the True Name, hunger is never satisfied.
|
ਰੂਪੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਾਂ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਖ ॥
रूपी भुख न उतरै जां देखां तां भुख ॥
Rūpī bẖukẖ na uṯrai jāʼn ḏekẖāʼn ṯāʼn bẖukẖ.
Beauty does not satisfy hunger; when the man sees beauty, he hungers even more.
|
ਜੇਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥੨॥
जेते रस सरीर के तेते लगहि दुख ॥२॥
Jeṯe ras sarīr ke ṯeṯe lagėh ḏukẖ. ||2||
As many as are the pleasures of the body, so many are the pains which afflict it. ||2||
|

ਅੰਧੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
अंधी कमी अंधु मनु मनि अंधै तनु अंधु ॥
Anḏẖī kammī anḏẖ man man anḏẖai ṯan anḏẖ.
Acting blindly, the mind becomes blind. The blind mind makes the body blind.
|
ਚਿਕੜਿ ਲਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਥਰ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
चिकड़ि लाइऐ किआ थीऐ जां तुटै पथर बंधु ॥
Cẖikaṛ lā▫i▫ai ki▫ā thī▫ai jāʼn ṯutai pathar banḏẖ.
Why make a dam with mud and plaster? Even a dam made of stones gives way.
|
ਬੰਧੁ ਤੁਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥
बंधु तुटा बेड़ी नही ना तुलहा ना हाथ ॥
Banḏẖ ṯutā beṛī nahī nā ṯulhā nā hāth.
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੇਤੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸਾਥ ॥੩॥
नानक सचे नाम विणु केते डुबे साथ ॥३॥
Nānak sacẖe nām viṇ keṯe dube sāth. ||3||
O Nanak, without the True Name, many multitudes have drowned. ||3||
|

ਲਖ ਮਣ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਲਖ ਮਣ ਰੁਪਾ ਲਖ ਸਾਹਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹ ॥
लख मण सुइना लख मण रुपा लख साहा सिरि साह ॥
Lakẖ maṇ su▫inā lakẖ maṇ rupā lakẖ sāhā sir sāh.
Thousands of pounds of gold, and thousands of pounds of silver; the king over the heads of thousands of kings.
|
ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥
लख लसकर लख वाजे नेजे लखी घोड़ी पातिसाह ॥
Lakẖ laskar lakẖ vāje neje lakẖī gẖoṛī pāṯisāh.
Thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and spearmen; the emperor of thousands of horsemen.

ਜਿਥੈ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥
जिथै साइरु लंघणा अगनि पाणी असगाह ॥
Jithai sā▫ir langẖ▫ṇā agan pāṇī asgāh.
The unfathomable ocean of fire and water must be crossed.
|
ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਧਾਹੀ ਪਵੈ ਕਹਾਹ ॥
कंधी दिसि न आवई धाही पवै कहाह ॥
Kanḏẖī ḏis na āvī ḏẖāhī pavai kahāh.
The other shore cannot be seen; only the roar of pitiful cries can be heard.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਥੈ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਹ ਕੇਈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥੪॥
नानक ओथै जाणीअहि साह केई पातिसाह ॥४॥
Nānak othai jāṇī▫ahi sāh ke▫ī pāṯisāh. ||4||
O Nanak, there, it shall be known, whether anyone is a king or an emperor. ||4||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
पउड़ी ॥
Pa▫oṛī.
Pauree:
|
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਗਲੀਂ ਜੰਜੀਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥
इकन्हा गलीं जंजीर बंदि रबाणीऐ ॥
Iknā galīʼn janjīr banḏ rabāṇī▫ai.
Some have chains around their necks, in bondage to the Lord.
|
ਬਧੇ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥
बधे छुटहि सचि सचु पछाणीऐ ॥
Baḏẖe cẖẖutėh sacẖ sacẖ pacẖẖāṇī▫ai.
They are released from bondage, realizing the True Lord as True.
