ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ
माझ महला ३ ॥
Mājẖ mėhlā 3.
Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ
मनमुख पड़हि पंडित कहावहि ॥
Manmukẖ paṛėh pandiṯ kahāvėh.
The self-willed manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ
दूजै भाइ महा दुखु पावहि ॥
Ḏūjai bẖā▫e mahā ḏukẖ pāvahi.
But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
बिखिआ माते किछु सूझै नाही फिरि फिरि जूनी आवणिआ ॥१॥
Bikẖi▫ā māṯe kicẖẖ sūjẖai nāhī fir fir jūnī āvaṇi▫ā. ||1||
Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ
हउ वारी जीउ वारी हउमै मारि मिलावणिआ ॥
Ha▫o vārī jī▫o vārī ha▫umai mār milāvaṇi▫ā.
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
गुर सेवा ते हरि मनि वसिआ हरि रसु सहजि पीआवणिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gur sevā ṯe har man vasi▫ā har ras sahj pī▫āvṇi▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ
वेदु पड़हि हरि रसु नही आइआ ॥
veḏ paṛėh har ras nahī ā▫i▫ā.
The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord's essence.

ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ
वादु वखाणहि मोहे माइआ ॥
vāḏ vakāṇėh mohe mā▫i▫ā.
Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate.

ਅਗਿਆਨਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
अगिआनमती सदा अंधिआरा गुरमुखि बूझि हरि गावणिआ ॥२॥
Agi▫ānmaṯī saḏā anḏẖi▫ārā gurmukẖ būjẖ har gāvaṇi▫ā. ||2||
The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਅਕਥੋ ਕਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ
अकथो कथीऐ सबदि सुहावै ॥
Aktho kathī▫ai sabaḏ suhāvai.
The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ
गुरमती मनि सचो भावै ॥
Gurmaṯī man sacẖo bẖāvai.
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind.

ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
सचो सचु रवहि दिनु राती इहु मनु सचि रंगावणिआ ॥३॥
Sacẖo sacẖ ravėh ḏin rāṯī ih man sacẖ rangāviṇ▫ā. ||3||
Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3||

ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ
जो सचि रते तिन सचो भावै ॥
Jo sacẖ raṯe ṯin sacẖo bẖāvai.
Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ
आपे देइ न पछोतावै ॥
Āpe ḏe▫e na pacẖẖoṯāvai.
The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
गुर कै सबदि सदा सचु जाता मिलि सचे सुखु पावणिआ ॥४॥
Gur kai sabaḏ saḏā sacẖ jāṯā mil sacẖe sukẖ pāvṇi▫ā. ||4||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4||

ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ
कूड़ु कुसतु तिना मैलु न लागै ॥
Kūṛ kusaṯ ṯinā mail na lāgai.
The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those,

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ
गुर परसादी अनदिनु जागै ॥
Gur parsādī an▫ḏin jāgai.
who, by Guru's Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
निरमल नामु वसै घट भीतरि जोती जोति मिलावणिआ ॥५॥
Nirmal nām vasai gẖat bẖīṯar joṯī joṯ milāvaṇi▫ā. ||5||
The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5||

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ
त्रै गुण पड़हि हरि ततु न जाणहि ॥
Ŧarai guṇ paṛėh har ṯaṯ na jāṇėh.
They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord.

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ
मूलहु भुले गुर सबदु न पछाणहि ॥
Mūlhu bẖule gur sabaḏ na pacẖẖāṇėh.
They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
मोह बिआपे किछु सूझै नाही गुर सबदी हरि पावणिआ ॥६॥
Moh bi▫āpe kicẖẖ sūjẖai nāhī gur sabḏī har pāvṇi▫ā. ||6||
They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ
वेदु पुकारै त्रिबिधि माइआ ॥
veḏ pukārai ṯaribaḏẖ mā▫i▫ā.
The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ
मनमुख न बूझहि दूजै भाइआ ॥
Manmukẖ na būjẖėh ḏūjai bẖā▫i▫ā.
The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
त्रै गुण पड़हि हरि एकु न जाणहि बिनु बूझे दुखु पावणिआ ॥७॥
Ŧarai guṇ paṛėh har ek na jāṇėh bin būjẖe ḏukẖ pāvṇi▫ā. ||7||
They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ
जा तिसु भावै ता आपि मिलाए ॥
Jā ṯis bẖāvai ṯā āp milā▫e.
When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ
गुर सबदी सहसा दूखु चुकाए ॥
Gur sabḏī sahsā ḏūkẖ cẖukā▫e.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥
नानक नावै की सची वडिआई नामो मंनि सुखु पावणिआ ॥८॥३०॥३१॥
Nānak nāvai kī sacẖī vadi▫ā▫ī nāmo man sukẖ pāvṇi▫ā. ||8||30||31||
O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ
माझ महला ३ ॥
Mājẖ mėhlā 3.
Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਈ
निरगुणु सरगुणु आपे सोई ॥
Nirguṇ sarguṇ āpe so▫ī.
The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well.

ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ
ततु पछाणै सो पंडितु होई ॥
Ŧaṯ pacẖẖāṇai so pandiṯ ho▫ī.
Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars.

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
आपि तरै सगले कुल तारै हरि नामु मंनि वसावणिआ ॥१॥
Āp ṯarai sagle kul ṯārai har nām man vasāvaṇi▫ā. ||1||
They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord's Name in the mind. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ
हउ वारी जीउ वारी हरि रसु चखि सादु पावणिआ ॥
Ha▫o vārī jī▫o vārī har ras cẖakẖ sāḏ pāvṇi▫ā.
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
हरि रसु चाखहि से जन निरमल निरमल नामु धिआवणिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Har ras cẖākẖahi se jan nirmal nirmal nām ḏẖi▫āvaṇi▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸੋ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ
सो निहकरमी जो सबदु बीचारे ॥
So nihkarmī jo sabaḏ bīcẖāre.
Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ
अंतरि ततु गिआनि हउमै मारे ॥
Anṯar ṯaṯ gi▫ān ha▫umai māre.
They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
नामु पदारथु नउ निधि पाए त्रै गुण मेटि समावणिआ ॥२॥
Nām paḏārath na▫o niḏẖ pā▫e ṯarai guṇ met samāvaṇi▫ā. ||2||
They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਹੋਵੈ
हउमै करै निहकरमी न होवै ॥
Ha▫umai karai nihkarmī na hovai.
Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ
गुर परसादी हउमै खोवै ॥
Gur parsādī ha▫umai kẖovai.
It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
अंतरि बिबेकु सदा आपु वीचारे गुर सबदी गुण गावणिआ ॥३॥
Anṯar bibek saḏā āp vīcẖāre gur sabḏī guṇ gāvaṇi▫ā. ||3||
Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they sing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ
हरि सरु सागरु निरमलु सोई ॥
Har sar sāgar nirmal so▫ī.
The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean.

ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ
संत चुगहि नित गुरमुखि होई ॥
Sanṯ cẖugėh niṯ gurmukẖ ho▫ī.
The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.

ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
इसनानु करहि सदा दिनु राती हउमै मैलु चुकावणिआ ॥४॥
Isnān karahi saḏā ḏin rāṯī ha▫umai mail cẖukāvaṇi▫ā. ||4||
They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ
निरमल हंसा प्रेम पिआरि ॥
Nirmal hansā parem pi▫ār.
The pure swans, with love and affection,

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ
हरि सरि वसै हउमै मारि ॥
Har sar vasai ha▫umai mār.
dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego.
