ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਘਾਲੈ ਧੰਧਾ
पर नारी सिउ घालै धंधा ॥
Par nārī si▫o gẖālai ḏẖanḏẖā.
and has an affair with another woman.

ਜੈਸੇ ਸਿੰਬਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਆ ਬਿਗਸਾਨਾ
जैसे सि्मबलु देखि सूआ बिगसाना ॥
Jaise simbal ḏekẖ sū▫ā bigsānā.
He is like the parrot, who is pleased to see the simbal tree;

ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਮੂਆ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
अंत की बार मूआ लपटाना ॥१॥
Anṯ kī bār mū▫ā laptānā. ||1||
but in the end, he dies, stuck to it. ||1||

ਪਾਪੀ ਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਅਗਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ
पापी का घरु अगने माहि ॥
Pāpī kā gẖar agne māhi.
The home of the sinner is on fire.

ਜਲਤ ਰਹੈ ਮਿਟਵੈ ਕਬ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
जलत रहै मिटवै कब नाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Jalaṯ rahai mitvai kab nāhi. ||1|| rahā▫o.
It keeps burning, and the fire cannot be extinguished. ||1||Pause||

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ
हरि की भगति न देखै जाइ ॥
Har kī bẖagaṯ na ḏekẖai jā▫e.
He does not go to see where the Lord is being worshipped.

ਮਾਰਗੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ
मारगु छोडि अमारगि पाइ ॥
Mārag cẖẖod amārag pā▫e.
He abandons the Lord's Path, and takes the wrong path.

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ
मूलहु भूला आवै जाइ ॥
Mūlhu bẖūlā āvai jā▫e.
He forgets the Primal Lord God, and is caught in the cycle of reincarnation.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਡਾਰਿ ਲਾਦਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
अम्रितु डारि लादि बिखु खाइ ॥२॥
Amriṯ dār lāḏ bikẖ kẖā▫e. ||2||
He throws away the Ambrosial Nectar, and gathers poison to eat. ||2||

ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੈ ਅਖਾਰਾ
जिउ बेस्वा के परै अखारा ॥
Ji▫o baisvā ke parai akẖārā.
He is like the prostitute, who comes to dance,

ਕਾਪਰੁ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ
कापरु पहिरि करहि सींगारा ॥
Kāpar pahir karahi sīʼngārā.
wearing beautiful clothes, decorated and adorned.

ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਸਾਸ
पूरे ताल निहाले सास ॥
Pūre ṯāl nihāle sās.
She dances to the beat, exciting the breath of those who watch her.

ਵਾ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਫਾਸ ॥੩॥
वा के गले जम का है फास ॥३॥
vā ke gale jam kā hai fās. ||3||
But the noose of the Messenger of Death is around her neck. ||3||

ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਕਰਮਾ
जा के मसतकि लिखिओ करमा ॥
Jā ke masṯak likẖi▫o karmā.
One who has good karma recorded on his forehead,

ਸੋ ਭਜਿ ਪਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾ
सो भजि परि है गुर की सरना ॥
So bẖaj par hai gur kī sarnā.
hurries to enter the Guru's Sanctuary.

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਇਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ
कहत नामदेउ इहु बीचारु ॥
Kahaṯ nāmḏe▫o ih bīcẖār.
Says Naam Dayv, consider this:

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥
इन बिधि संतहु उतरहु पारि ॥४॥२॥८॥
In biḏẖ sanṯahu uṯarahu pār. ||4||2||8||
O Saints, this is the way to cross over to the other side. ||4||2||8||

ਸੰਡਾ ਮਰਕਾ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ
संडा मरका जाइ पुकारे ॥
Sandā markā jā▫e pukāre.
Sanda and Marka went and complained to Harnaakhash,

ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਹਮ ਹੀ ਪਚਿ ਹਾਰੇ
पड़ै नही हम ही पचि हारे ॥
Paṛai nahī ham hī pacẖ hāre.
Your son does not read his lessons. We are tired of trying to teach him.

ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਰ ਤਾਲ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਚਟੀਆ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਗਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
रामु कहै कर ताल बजावै चटीआ सभै बिगारे ॥१॥
Rām kahai kar ṯāl bajāvai cẖatī▫ā sabẖai bigāre. ||1||
He chants the Lord's Name, clapping his hands to keep the beat; he has spoiled all the other students. ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਪਿਬੋ ਕਰੈ
राम नामा जपिबो करै ॥
Rām nāmā japibo karai.
He chants the Lord's Name,

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
हिरदै हरि जी को सिमरनु धरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Hirḏai har jī ko simran ḏẖarai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
and he has enshrined meditative remembrance of the Lord within his heart."||1||Pause||

ਬਸੁਧਾ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਟਰਾਨੀ
बसुधा बसि कीनी सभ राजे बिनती करै पटरानी ॥
Basuḏẖā bas kīnī sabẖ rāje binṯī karai patrānī.
Your father the king has conquered the whole world, said his mother the queen.

ਪੂਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਉ ਅਉਰੈ ਠਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
पूतु प्रहिलादु कहिआ नही मानै तिनि तउ अउरै ठानी ॥२॥
Pūṯ par▫hilāḏ kahi▫ā nahī mānai ṯin ṯa▫o a▫urai ṯẖānī. ||2||
O Prahlad my son, you do not obey him, so he has decided to deal with you in another way.||2||

ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਤਰ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਸਹ ਅਉਧ ਘਨੇਰੀ
दुसट सभा मिलि मंतर उपाइआ करसह अउध घनेरी ॥
Ḏusat sabẖā mil manṯar upā▫i▫ā karsah a▫oḏẖ gẖanerī.
The council of villains met and resolved to send Prahlaad into the life hereafter.

ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਜਲ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੩॥
गिरि तर जल जुआला भै राखिओ राजा रामि माइआ फेरी ॥३॥
Gir ṯar jal ju▫ālā bẖai rākẖi▫o rājā rām mā▫i▫ā ferī. ||3||
Prahlaad was thrown off a mountain, into the water, and into a fire, but the Sovereign Lord God saved him, by changing the laws of nature. ||3||

ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਭੈ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਉ ਜੁ ਤੁਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ
काढि खड़गु कालु भै कोपिओ मोहि बताउ जु तुहि राखै ॥
Kādẖ kẖaṛag kāl bẖai kopi▫o mohi baṯā▫o jo ṯuhi rākẖai.
Harnaakhash thundered with rage and threatened to kill Prahlaad. "Tell me, who can save you?

ਪੀਤ ਪੀਤਾਂਬਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ਥੰਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਖੈ ॥੪॥
पीत पीतांबर त्रिभवण धणी थ्मभ माहि हरि भाखै ॥४॥
Pīṯ pīṯāʼnbar ṯaribẖavaṇ ḏẖaṇī thambẖ māhi har bẖākẖai. ||4||
Prahlaad answered, "The Lord, the Master of the three worlds, is contained even in this pillar to which I am tied."||4||

ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਖਹ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਕੀਏ ਸਨਾਥਾ
हरनाखसु जिनि नखह बिदारिओ सुरि नर कीए सनाथा ॥
Harnākẖas jin nakẖah biḏāri▫o sur nar kī▫e sanāthā.
The Lord who tore Harnaakhash apart with His nails proclaimed Himself the Lord of gods and men.

ਕਹਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਮ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਅਭੈ ਪਦ ਦਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੩॥੯॥
कहि नामदेउ हम नरहरि धिआवह रामु अभै पद दाता ॥५॥३॥९॥
Kahi nāmḏe▫o ham narhar ḏẖi▫āvėh rām abẖai paḏ ḏāṯā. ||5||3||9||
Says Naam Dayv, I meditate on the Lord, the Man-lion, the Giver of fearless dignity. ||5||3||9||

ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਸੁਨੁ ਬੇ ਨਾਮਾ
सुलतानु पूछै सुनु बे नामा ॥
Sulṯān pūcẖẖai sun be nāmā.
The Sultan said, "Listen, Naam Dayv:

ਦੇਖਉ ਰਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥
देखउ राम तुम्हारे कामा ॥१॥
Ḏekẖ▫a▫u rām ṯumĥāre kāmā. ||1||
let me see the actions of your Lord."||1||

ਨਾਮਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੇ ਬਾਧਿਲਾ
नामा सुलताने बाधिला ॥
Nāmā sulṯāne bāḏẖilā.
The Sultan arrested Naam Dayv,

ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੀਠੁਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
देखउ तेरा हरि बीठुला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ḏekẖ▫a▫u ṯerā har bīṯẖulā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
and said, "Let me see your Beloved Lord."||1||Pause||

ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਗਊ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਵਾਇ
बिसमिलि गऊ देहु जीवाइ ॥
Bismil ga▫ū ḏeh jīvā▫e.
Bring this dead cow back to life.

ਨਾਤਰੁ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰਉ ਠਾਂਇ ॥੨॥
नातरु गरदनि मारउ ठांइ ॥२॥
Nāṯar garḏan māra▫o ṯẖāʼn▫e. ||2||
Otherwise, I shall cut off your head here and now."||2||

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ
बादिसाह ऐसी किउ होइ ॥
Bāḏisāh aisī ki▫o ho▫e.
Naam Dayv answered, "O king, how can this happen?

ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਆ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
बिसमिलि कीआ न जीवै कोइ ॥३॥
Bismil kī▫ā na jīvai ko▫e. ||3||
No one can bring the dead back to life. ||3||

ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਹੋਇ
मेरा कीआ कछू न होइ ॥
Merā kī▫ā kacẖẖū na ho▫e.
I cannot do anything by my own actions.

ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
करि है रामु होइ है सोइ ॥४॥
Kar hai rām ho▫e hai so▫e. ||4||
Whatever the Lord does, that alone happens."||4||

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹੁ ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਓ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ
बादिसाहु चड़्हिओ अहंकारि ॥
Bāḏisāhu cẖaṛĥi▫o ahaʼnkār.
The arrogant king was enraged at this reply.

ਗਜ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀਨੋ ਚਮਕਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
गज हसती दीनो चमकारि ॥५॥
Gaj hasṯī ḏīno cẖamkār. ||5||
He incited an elephant to attack. ||5||

ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇ
रुदनु करै नामे की माइ ॥
Ruḏan karai nāme kī mā▫e.
Naam Dayv's mother began to cry,

ਛੋਡਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਭਜਹਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥
छोडि रामु की न भजहि खुदाइ ॥६॥
Cẖẖod rām kī na bẖajėh kẖuḏā▫e. ||6||
and she said, "Why don't you abandon your Lord Raam, and worship his Lord Allah?"||6||

ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੂੰਗੜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ
न हउ तेरा पूंगड़ा न तू मेरी माइ ॥
Na ha▫o ṯerā pūʼngaṛā na ṯū merī mā▫e.
Naam Dayv answered, "I am not your son, and you are not my mother.

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੭॥
पिंडु पड़ै तउ हरि गुन गाइ ॥७॥
Pind paṛai ṯa▫o har gun gā▫e. ||7||
Even if my body dies, I will still sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord."||7||

ਕਰੈ ਗਜਿੰਦੁ ਸੁੰਡ ਕੀ ਚੋਟ
करै गजिंदु सुंड की चोट ॥
Karai gajinḏ sund kī cẖot.
The elephant attacked him with his trunk,

ਨਾਮਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥੮॥
नामा उबरै हरि की ओट ॥८॥
Nāmā ubrai har kī ot. ||8||
but Naam Dayv was saved, protected by the Lord. ||8||

ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ
काजी मुलां करहि सलामु ॥
Kājī mulāʼn karahi salām.
The king said, "The Qazis and the Mullahs bow down to me,

ਇਨਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਲਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
इनि हिंदू मेरा मलिआ मानु ॥९॥
In hinḏū merā mali▫ā mān. ||9||
but this Hindu has trampled my honor."||9||

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਨੇਹੁ
बादिसाह बेनती सुनेहु ॥
Bāḏisāh benṯī sunehu.
The people pleaded with the king, "Hear our prayer, O king.
