ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਮੈਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
अह्मबुधि दुरमति है मैली बिनु गुर भवजलि फेरा ॥३॥
Ahaʼn▫buḏẖ ḏurmaṯ hai mailī bin gur bẖavjal ferā. ||3||
They are proud and arrogant, evil-minded and filthy; without the Guru, they are reincarnated into the terrifying world-ocean. ||3||
|
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
होम जग जप तप सभि संजम तटि तीरथि नही पाइआ ॥
Hom jag jap ṯap sabẖ sanjam ṯat ṯirath nahī pā▫i▫ā.
Through burnt offerings, charitable feasts, ritualistic chants, penance, all sorts of austere self-discipline and pilgrimages to sacred shrines and rivers, they do not find God.

ਮਿਟਿਆ ਆਪੁ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੪॥
मिटिआ आपु पए सरणाई गुरमुखि नानक जगतु तराइआ ॥४॥१॥१४॥
Miti▫ā āp pa▫e sarṇā▫ī gurmukẖ Nānak jagaṯ ṯarā▫i▫ā. ||4||1||14||
Self-conceit is only erased when one seeks the Lord's Sanctuary and becomes Gurmukh; O Nanak, he crosses over the world-ocean. ||4||1||14||

ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਉਦਾਸਾਏ ॥
बन महि पेखिओ त्रिण महि पेखिओ ग्रिहि पेखिओ उदासाए ॥
Ban mėh pekẖi▫o ṯariṇ mėh pekẖi▫o garihi pekẖi▫o uḏāsā▫e.
I have seen Him in the woods, and I have seen Him in the fields. I have seen Him in the household, and in renunciation.

ਦੰਡਧਾਰ ਜਟਧਾਰੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਤੀਰਥਾਏ ॥੧॥
दंडधार जटधारै पेखिओ वरत नेम तीरथाए ॥१॥
Ḏandḏẖār jatḏẖārai pekẖi▫o varaṯ nem ṯīrthā▫e. ||1||
I have seen Him as a Yogi carrying His staff, as a Yogi with matted hair, fasting, making vows, and visiting sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||
|
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਮਨ ਮਾਏਂ ॥
संतसंगि पेखिओ मन माएं ॥
Saṯsang pekẖi▫o man mā▫eʼn.
I have seen Him in the Society of the Saints, and within my own mind.

ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲ ਸਰਬ ਮਹਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਸਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ऊभ पइआल सरब महि पूरन रसि मंगल गुण गाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ūbẖ pa▫i▫āl sarab mėh pūran ras mangal guṇ gā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.
In the sky, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in everything, He is pervading and permeating. With love and joy, I sing His Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause||

ਜੋਗ ਭੇਖ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਜਤਿ ਜੰਗਮ ਕਾਪੜਾਏ ॥
जोग भेख संनिआसै पेखिओ जति जंगम कापड़ाए ॥
Jog bẖekẖ sanni▫āsai pekẖi▫o jaṯ jangam kāpṛā▫e.
I have seen Him among the Yogis, the Sannyaasees, the celibates, the wandering hermits and the wearers of patched coats.

ਤਪੀ ਤਪੀਸੁਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਨਿਰਤਾਏ ॥੨॥
तपी तपीसुर मुनि महि पेखिओ नट नाटिक निरताए ॥२॥
Ŧapī ṯapīsur mun mėh pekẖi▫o nat nātik nirṯā▫e. ||2||
I have seen Him among the men of severe self-discipline, the silent sages, the actors, dramas and dances. ||2||
|
ਚਹੁ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਖਟ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਦਸ ਅਸਟੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾਏ ॥
चहु महि पेखिओ खट महि पेखिओ दस असटी सिम्रिताए ॥
Cẖahu mėh pekẖi▫o kẖat mėh pekẖi▫o ḏas astī simmriṯā▫e.
I have seen Him in the four Vedas, I have seen Him in the six Shaastras, in the eighteen Puraanas and the Simritees as well.

ਸਭ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਨਹਿ ਤਉ ਕਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਉ ਦੁਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
सभ मिलि एको एकु वखानहि तउ किस ते कहउ दुराए ॥३॥
Sabẖ mil eko ek vakẖānėh ṯa▫o kis ṯe kaha▫o ḏurā▫e. ||3||
All together, they declare that there is only the One Lord. So tell me, from whom is He hidden? ||3||

ਅਗਹ ਅਗਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਹ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮਾਏ ॥
अगह अगह बेअंत सुआमी नह कीम कीम कीमाए ॥
Agah agah be▫anṯ su▫āmī nah kīm kīm kīmā▫e.
Unfathomable and Inaccessible, He is our Infinite Lord and Master; His Value is beyond valuation.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੫॥
जन नानक तिन कै बलि बलि जाईऐ जिह घटि परगटीआए ॥४॥२॥१५॥
Jan Nānak ṯin kai bal bal jā▫ī▫ai jih gẖat pargatī▫ā▫e. ||4||2||15||
Servant Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those, within whose heart He is revealed. ||4||2||15||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
भैरउ महला ५ ॥

Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
निकटि बुझै सो बुरा किउ करै ॥
Nikat bujẖai so burā ki▫o karai.
How can anyone do evil, if he realizes that the Lord is near?
|
ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਨਿਤ ਡਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥
बिखु संचै नित डरता फिरै ॥
Bikẖ sancẖai niṯ darṯā firai.
One who gathers corruption, constantly feels fear.
|
ਹੈ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
है निकटे अरु भेदु न पाइआ ॥
Hai nikte ar bẖeḏ na pā▫i▫ā.
He is near, but this mystery is not understood.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
बिनु सतिगुर सभ मोही माइआ ॥१॥
Bin saṯgur sabẖ mohī mā▫i▫ā. ||1||
Without the True Guru, all are enticed by Maya. ||1||
|
ਨੇੜੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥
नेड़ै नेड़ै सभु को कहै ॥
Neṛai neṛai sabẖ ko kahai.
Everyone says that He is near, near at hand.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुरमुखि भेदु विरला को लहै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gurmukẖ bẖeḏ virlā ko lahai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
But rare is that person, who, as Gurmukh, understands this mystery. ||1||Pause||
|
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
निकटि न देखै पर ग्रिहि जाइ ॥
Nikat na ḏekẖai par garihi jā▫e.
The mortal does not see the Lord near at hand; instead, he goes to the homes of others.
|
ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰੈ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਇ ॥
दरबु हिरै मिथिआ करि खाइ ॥
Ḏarab hirai mithi▫ā kar kẖā▫e.
He steals their wealth and lives in falsehood.
|
ਪਈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
पई ठगउरी हरि संगि न जानिआ ॥
Pa▫ī ṯẖag▫urī har sang na jāni▫ā.
Under the influence of the drug of illusion, he does not know that the Lord is with him.
|
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
बाझु गुरू है भरमि भुलानिआ ॥२॥
Bājẖ gurū hai bẖaram bẖulāni▫ā. ||2||
Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||2||
|
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥
निकटि न जानै बोलै कूड़ु ॥
Nikat na jānai bolai kūṛ.
Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies.
|
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥
माइआ मोहि मूठा है मूड़ु ॥
Mā▫i▫ā mohi mūṯẖā hai mūṛ.
In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered.
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
अंतरि वसतु दिसंतरि जाइ ॥
Anṯar vasaṯ disanṯar jā▫e.
That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside.
|
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
बाझु गुरू है भरमि भुलाइ ॥३॥
Bājẖ gurū hai bẖaram bẖulā▫e. ||3||
Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3||
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥
जिसु मसतकि करमु लिखिआ लिलाट ॥
Jis masṯak karam likẖi▫ā lilāt.
One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਪਾਟ ॥
सतिगुरु सेवे खुल्हे कपाट ॥
Saṯgur seve kẖulĥe kapāt.
serves the True Guru; thus the hard and heavy shutters of his mind are opened wide.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਸੋਇ ॥
अंतरि बाहरि निकटे सोइ ॥
Anṯar bāhar nikte so▫e.
Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand.
|
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥
जन नानक आवै न जावै कोइ ॥४॥३॥१६॥
Jan Nānak āvai na jāvai ko▫e. ||4||3||16||
O servant Nanak, he does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16||

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
जिसु तू राखहि तिसु कउनु मारै ॥
Jis ṯū rākẖahi ṯis ka▫un mārai.
Who can kill that person whom You protect, O Lord?
|
ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
सभ तुझ ही अंतरि सगल संसारै ॥
Sabẖ ṯujẖ hī anṯar sagal sansārai.
All beings, and the entire universe, is within You.
|
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
कोटि उपाव चितवत है प्राणी ॥
Kot upāv cẖiṯvaṯ hai parāṇī.
The mortal thinks up millions of plans,
|
ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
सो होवै जि करै चोज विडाणी ॥१॥
So hovai jė karai cẖoj vidāṇī. ||1||
but that alone happens, which the Lord of wondrous plays does. ||1||
|
ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
राखहु राखहु किरपा धारि ॥
Rākẖo rākẖo kirpā ḏẖār.
Save me, save me, O Lord; shower me with Your Mercy.
|
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
तेरी सरणि तेरै दरवारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ŧerī saraṇ ṯerai ḏarvār. ||1|| rahā▫o.
I seek Your Sanctuary, and Your Court. ||1||Pause||
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
जिनि सेविआ निरभउ सुखदाता ॥
Jin sevi▫ā nirbẖa▫o sukẖ▫ḏāṯa.
Whoever serves the Fearless Lord, the Giver of Peace,
|
ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥
तिनि भउ दूरि कीआ एकु पराता ॥
Ŧin bẖa▫o ḏūr kī▫ā ek parāṯā.
is rid of all his fears; he knows the One Lord.
|
ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
जो तू करहि सोई फुनि होइ ॥
Jo ṯū karahi so▫ī fun ho▫e.
Whatever You do, that alone comes to pass in the end.
|
ਮਾਰੈ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
मारै न राखै दूजा कोइ ॥२॥
Mārai na rākẖai ḏūjā ko▫e. ||2||
There is no other who can kill or protect us. ||2||
|
ਕਿਆ ਤੂ ਸੋਚਹਿ ਮਾਣਸ ਬਾਣਿ ॥
किआ तू सोचहि माणस बाणि ॥
Ki▫ā ṯū socẖėh māṇas bāṇ.
What do you think, with your human understanding?
|
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
अंतरजामी पुरखु सुजाणु ॥
Anṯarjāmī purakẖ sujāṇ.
The All-knowing Lord is the Searcher of Hearts.
|
ਏਕ ਟੇਕ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
एक टेक एको आधारु ॥
Ėk tek eko āḏẖār.
The One and only Lord is my Support and Protection.
|
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
सभ किछु जाणै सिरजणहारु ॥३॥
Sabẖ kicẖẖ jāṇai sirjaṇhār. ||3||
The Creator Lord knows everything. ||3||
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
जिसु ऊपरि नदरि करे करतारु ॥
Jis ūpar naḏar kare karṯār.
That person who is blessed by the Creator's Glance of Grace-
