वरन भेख नही ब्रहमण खत्री ॥
varan bẖekẖ nahī barahmaṇ kẖaṯrī.
There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kshatriya.

|
देउ न देहुरा गऊ गाइत्री ॥
Ḏe▫o na ḏehurā ga▫ū gā▫iṯarī.
There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer.
|
|
होम जग नही तीरथि नावणु ना को पूजा लाइदा ॥१०॥
Hom jag nahī ṯirath nāvaṇ nā ko pūjā lā▫iḏā. ||10||
There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. ||10||
|
|
ना को मुला ना को काजी ॥
Nā ko mulā nā ko kājī.
There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi.
|
|
ना को सेखु मसाइकु हाजी ॥
Nā ko sekẖ masā▫ik hājī.
There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca.
|
|
रईअति राउ न हउमै दुनीआ ना को कहणु कहाइदा ॥११॥
Ra▫ī▫aṯ rā▫o na ha▫umai ḏunī▫ā nā ko kahaṇ kahā▫iḏā. ||11||
There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11||
|
|
भाउ न भगती ना सिव सकती ॥
Bẖā▫o na bẖagṯī nā siv sakṯī.
There was no love or devotion, no Shiva or Shakti - no energy or matter.
|
|
साजनु मीतु बिंदु नही रकती ॥
Sājan mīṯ binḏ nahī rakṯī.
There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood.
|
|
आपे साहु आपे वणजारा साचे एहो भाइदा ॥१२॥
Āpe sāhu āpe vaṇjārā sācẖe eho bẖā▫iḏā. ||12||
He Himself is the banker, and He Himself is the merchant. Such is the Pleasure of the Will of the True Lord. ||12||

|
बेद कतेब न सिम्रिति सासत ॥
Beḏ kaṯeb na simriṯ sāsaṯ.
There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Simritees or Shaastras.
|
|
पाठ पुराण उदै नही आसत ॥
Pāṯẖ purāṇ uḏai nahī āsaṯ.
There was no recitation of the Puraanas, no sunrise or sunset.
|
|
कहता बकता आपि अगोचरु आपे अलखु लखाइदा ॥१३॥
Kahṯā bakṯā āp agocẖar āpe alakẖ lakẖā▫iḏā. ||13||
The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. ||13||
|
|
जा तिसु भाणा ता जगतु उपाइआ ॥
Jā ṯis bẖāṇā ṯā jagaṯ upā▫i▫ā.
When He so willed, He created the world.
|
|
बाझु कला आडाणु रहाइआ ॥
Bājẖ kalā ādāṇ rahā▫i▫ā.
Without any supporting power, He sustained the universe.
|
|
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु उपाए माइआ मोहु वधाइदा ॥१४॥
Barahmā bisan mahes upā▫e mā▫i▫ā moh vaḏẖā▫iḏā. ||14||
He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14||
|
|
विरले कउ गुरि सबदु सुणाइआ ॥
virle ka▫o gur sabaḏ suṇā▫i▫ā.
How rare is that person who listens to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
|
|
करि करि देखै हुकमु सबाइआ ॥
Kar kar ḏekẖai hukam sabā▫i▫ā.
He created the creation, and watches over it; the Hukam of His Command is over all.
|
|
खंड ब्रहमंड पाताल अर्मभे गुपतहु परगटी आइदा ॥१५॥
Kẖand barahmand pāṯāl arambẖe gupṯahu pargatī ā▫iḏā. ||15||
He formed the planets, solar systems and nether regions, and brought what was hidden to manifestation. ||15||
|
|
ता का अंतु न जाणै कोई ॥
Ŧā kā anṯ na jāṇai ko▫ī.
No one knows His limits.
|
|
पूरे गुर ते सोझी होई ॥
Pūre gur ṯe sojẖī ho▫ī.
This understanding comes from the Perfect Guru.
|
|
नानक साचि रते बिसमादी बिसम भए गुण गाइदा ॥१६॥३॥१५॥
Nānak sācẖ raṯe bismāḏī bisam bẖa▫e guṇ gā▫iḏā. ||16||3||15||
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His Glorious Praises, they are filled with wonder. ||16||3||15||

मारू महला १ ॥
Mārū mėhlā 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
|
|
आपे आपु उपाइ निराला ॥
Āpe āp upā▫e nirālā.
He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached.
|
|
साचा थानु कीओ दइआला ॥
Sācẖā thān kī▫o ḏa▫i▫ālā.
The Merciful Lord has established His True Home.
|
|
पउण पाणी अगनी का बंधनु काइआ कोटु रचाइदा ॥१॥
Pa▫uṇ pāṇī agnī kā banḏẖan kā▫i▫ā kot racẖā▫iḏā. ||1||
Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1||
|
|
नउ घर थापे थापणहारै ॥
Na▫o gẖar thāpe thāpaṇhārai.
The Creator established the nine gates.
|
|
दसवै वासा अलख अपारै ॥
Ḏasvai vāsā alakẖ apārai.
In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord.
|
|
साइर सपत भरे जलि निरमलि गुरमुखि मैलु न लाइदा ॥२॥
Sā▫ir sapaṯ bẖare jal nirmal gurmukẖ mail na lā▫iḏā. ||2||
The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2||
|
|
रवि ससि दीपक जोति सबाई ॥
Rav sas ḏīpak joṯ sabā▫ī.
The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light.
|
|
आपे करि वेखै वडिआई ॥
Āpe kar vekẖai vadi▫ā▫ī.
Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness.
|
|
जोति सरूप सदा सुखदाता सचे सोभा पाइदा ॥३॥
Joṯ sarūp saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa sacẖe sobẖā pā▫iḏā. ||3||
The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3||
|
|
गड़ महि हाट पटण वापारा ॥
Gaṛ mėh hāt pataṇ vāpārā.
Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there.
|
|
पूरै तोलि तोलै वणजारा ॥
Pūrai ṯol ṯolai vaṇjārā.
The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights.
|
|
आपे रतनु विसाहे लेवै आपे कीमति पाइदा ॥४॥
Āpe raṯan visāhe levai āpe kīmaṯ pā▫iḏā. ||4||
He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4||
|
|
कीमति पाई पावणहारै ॥
Kīmaṯ pā▫ī pāvaṇhārai.
The Appraiser appraises its value.
|
|
वेपरवाह पूरे भंडारै ॥
veparvāh pūre bẖandārai.
The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures.
|
|
सरब कला ले आपे रहिआ गुरमुखि किसै बुझाइदा ॥५॥
Sarab kalā le āpe rahi▫ā gurmukẖ kisai bujẖā▫iḏā. ||5||
He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5||
|
|
नदरि करे पूरा गुरु भेटै ॥
Naḏar kare pūrā gur bẖetai.
When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.
|
|
जम जंदारु न मारै फेटै ॥
Jam janḏār na mārai fetai.
The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then.
|
|
जिउ जल अंतरि कमलु बिगासी आपे बिगसि धिआइदा ॥६॥
Ji▫o jal anṯar kamal bigāsī āpe bigas ḏẖi▫ā▫iḏā. ||6||
He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6||
|
|
आपे वरखै अम्रित धारा ॥
Āpe varkẖai amriṯ ḏẖārā.
He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of
|
|
रतन जवेहर लाल अपारा ॥
Raṯan javehar lāl apārā.
jewels, diamonds, and rubies of priceless value.
|
|
सतिगुरु मिलै त पूरा पाईऐ प्रेम पदारथु पाइदा ॥७॥
Saṯgur milai ṯa pūrā pā▫ī▫ai parem paḏārath pā▫iḏā. ||7||
When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7||
|
|
प्रेम पदारथु लहै अमोलो ॥
Parem paḏārath lahai amolo.
Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love -
|
|
कब ही न घाटसि पूरा तोलो ॥
Kab hī na gẖātas pūrā ṯolo.
his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight.
|
|
सचे का वापारी होवै सचो सउदा पाइदा ॥८॥
Sacẖe kā vāpārī hovai sacẖo sa▫uḏā pā▫iḏā. ||8||
The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8||
|
|
सचा सउदा विरला को पाए ॥
Sacẖā sa▫uḏā virlā ko pā▫e.
How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise.
|
|
पूरा सतिगुरु मिलै मिलाए ॥
Pūrā saṯgur milai milā▫e.
Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord.
