ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥
हउमै ममता करदा आइआ ॥
Ha▫umai mamṯā karḏā ā▫i▫ā.
Practicing egotism and possessiveness, you have come into the world.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
आसा मनसा बंधि चलाइआ ॥
Āsā mansā banḏẖ cẖalā▫i▫ā.
Hope and desire bind you and lead you on.
|
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਚਾਲੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
मेरी मेरी करत किआ ले चाले बिखु लादे छार बिकारा हे ॥१५॥
Merī merī karaṯ ki▫ā le cẖāle bikẖ lāḏe cẖẖār bikārā he. ||15||
Indulging in egotism and self-conceit, what will you be able to carry with you, except the load of ashes from poison and corruption? ||15||
|
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
हरि की भगति करहु जन भाई ॥
Har kī bẖagaṯ karahu jan bẖā▫ī.
Worship the Lord in devotion, O humble Siblings of Destiny.

ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
अकथु कथहु मनु मनहि समाई ॥
Akath kathahu man manėh samā▫ī.
Speak the Unspoken Speech, and the mind will merge back into the Mind.

ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
उठि चलता ठाकि रखहु घरि अपुनै दुखु काटे काटणहारा हे ॥१६॥
Uṯẖ cẖalṯā ṯẖāk rakẖahu gẖar apunai ḏukẖ kāte kātaṇhārā he. ||16||
Restrain your restless mind within its own home, and the Lord, the Destroyer, shall destroy your pain. ||16||
|
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਪਰਾਤੀ ॥
हरि गुर पूरे की ओट पराती ॥
Har gur pūre kī ot parāṯī.
I seek the support of the Perfect Guru, the Lord.
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
गुरमुखि हरि लिव गुरमुखि जाती ॥
Gurmukẖ har liv gurmukẖ jāṯī.
The Gurmukh loves the Lord; the Gurmukh realizes the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੪॥੧੦॥
नानक राम नामि मति ऊतम हरि बखसे पारि उतारा हे ॥१७॥४॥१०॥
Nānak rām nām maṯ ūṯam har bakẖse pār uṯārā he. ||17||4||10||
O Nanak, through the Lord's Name, the intellect is exalted; granting His forgiveness, the Lord carries him across to the other side. ||17||4||10||

ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
सरणि परे गुरदेव तुमारी ॥
Saraṇ pare gurḏev ṯumārī.
O Divine Guru, I have entered Your Sanctuary.
|
ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
तू समरथु दइआलु मुरारी ॥
Ŧū samrath ḏa▫i▫āl murārī.
You are the Almighty Lord, the Merciful Lord.
|
ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
तेरे चोज न जाणै कोई तू पूरा पुरखु बिधाता हे ॥१॥
Ŧere cẖoj na jāṇai ko▫ī ṯū pūrā purakẖ biḏẖāṯā he. ||1||
No one knows Your wondrous plays; You are the perfect Architect of Destiny. ||1||
|
ਤੂ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
तू आदि जुगादि करहि प्रतिपाला ॥
Ŧū āḏ jugāḏ karahi parṯipālā.
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You cherish and sustain Your beings.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
घटि घटि रूपु अनूपु दइआला ॥
Gẖat gẖat rūp anūp ḏa▫i▫ālā.
You are in each and every heart, O Merciful Lord of incomparable beauty.
|
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
जिउ तुधु भावै तिवै चलावहि सभु तेरो कीआ कमाता हे ॥२॥
Ji▫o ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai ṯivai cẖalāvėh sabẖ ṯero kī▫ā kamāṯā he. ||2||
As You will, You cause all to walk; everyone acts according to Your Command. ||2||
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ॥
अंतरि जोति भली जगजीवन ॥
Anṯar joṯ bẖalī jagjīvan.
Deep within the nucleus of all, is the Light of the Life of the World.
|
ਸਭਿ ਘਟ ਭੋਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਨ ॥
सभि घट भोगै हरि रसु पीवन ॥
Sabẖ gẖat bẖogai har ras pīvan.
The Lord enjoys the hearts of all, and drinks in their essence.
|
ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
आपे लेवै आपे देवै तिहु लोई जगत पित दाता हे ॥३॥
Āpe levai āpe ḏevai ṯihu lo▫ī jagaṯ piṯ ḏāṯā he. ||3||
He Himself gives, and He himself takes; He is the generous father of the beings of the three worlds. ||3||
|
ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
जगतु उपाइ खेलु रचाइआ ॥
Jagaṯ upā▫e kẖel racẖā▫i▫ā.
Creating the world, He has set His play into motion.
|
ਪਵਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
पवणै पाणी अगनी जीउ पाइआ ॥
Pavṇai pāṇī agnī jī▫o pā▫i▫ā.
He placed the soul in the body of air, water and fire.
|
ਦੇਹੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਸੋ ਦਸਵਾ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਹਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
देही नगरी नउ दरवाजे सो दसवा गुपतु रहाता हे ॥४॥
Ḏehī nagrī na▫o ḏarvāje so ḏasvā gupaṯ rahāṯā he. ||4||
The body-village has nine gates; the Tenth Gate remains hidden. ||4||
|
ਚਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਅਸਰਾਲਾ ॥
चारि नदी अगनी असराला ॥
Cẖār naḏī agnī asrālā.
There are four horrible rivers of fire.
|
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
कोई गुरमुखि बूझै सबदि निराला ॥
Ko▫ī gurmukẖ būjẖai sabaḏ nirālā.
How rare is that Gurmukh who understands this, and through the Word of the Shabad, remains unattached.

ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
साकत दुरमति डूबहि दाझहि गुरि राखे हरि लिव राता हे ॥५॥
Sākaṯ ḏurmaṯ dūbėh ḏājẖėh gur rākẖe har liv rāṯā he. ||5||
The faithless cynics are drowned and burnt through their evil-mindedness. The Guru saves those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord. ||5||
|
ਅਪੁ ਤੇਜੁ ਵਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਆਕਾਸਾ ॥
अपु तेजु वाइ प्रिथमी आकासा ॥
Ap ṯej vā▫e parithmī ākāsā.
Water, fire, air, earth and ether -
|
ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
तिन महि पंच ततु घरि वासा ॥
Ŧin mėh pancẖ ṯaṯ gẖar vāsā.
in that house of the five elements, they dwell.
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
सतिगुर सबदि रहहि रंगि राता तजि माइआ हउमै भ्राता हे ॥६॥
Saṯgur sabaḏ rahėh rang rāṯā ṯaj mā▫i▫ā ha▫umai bẖarāṯā he. ||6||
Those who remain imbued with the Word of the True Guru's Shabad, renounce Maya, egotism and doubt. ||6||
|
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥
इहु मनु भीजै सबदि पतीजै ॥
Ih man bẖījai sabaḏ paṯījai.
This mind is drenched with the Shabad, and satisfied.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕੀਜੈ ॥
बिनु नावै किआ टेक टिकीजै ॥
Bin nāvai ki▫ā tek tikījai.
Without the Name, what support can anyone have?
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਇਨਿ ਸਾਕਤਿ ਦੂਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
अंतरि चोरु मुहै घरु मंदरु इनि साकति दूतु न जाता हे ॥७॥
Anṯar cẖor muhai gẖar manḏar in sākaṯ ḏūṯ na jāṯā he. ||7||
The temple of the body is being plundered by the thieves within, but this faithless cynic does not even recognize these demons. ||7||
|
ਦੁੰਦਰ ਦੂਤ ਭੂਤ ਭੀਹਾਲੇ ॥
दुंदर दूत भूत भीहाले ॥
Ḏunḏar ḏūṯ bẖūṯ bẖīhāle.
They are argumentative demons, terrifying goblins.
|
ਖਿੰਚੋਤਾਣਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥
खिंचोताणि करहि बेताले ॥
Kẖincẖoṯāṇ karahi beṯāle.
These demons stir up conflict and strife.
|
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
सबद सुरति बिनु आवै जावै पति खोई आवत जाता हे ॥८॥
Sabaḏ suraṯ bin āvai jāvai paṯ kẖo▫ī āvaṯ jāṯā he. ||8||
Without awareness of the Shabad, one comes and goes in reincarnation; he loses his honor in this coming and going. ||8||
|
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਲਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
कूड़ु कलरु तनु भसमै ढेरी ॥
Kūṛ kalar ṯan bẖasmai dẖerī.
The body of the false person is just a pile of barren dirt.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
बिनु नावै कैसी पति तेरी ॥
Bin nāvai kaisī paṯ ṯerī.
Without the Name, what honor can you have?
|
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਮਕੰਕਰਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
बाधे मुकति नाही जुग चारे जमकंकरि कालि पराता हे ॥९॥
Bāḏẖe mukaṯ nāhī jug cẖāre jamkankar kāl parāṯā he. ||9||
Bound and gagged throughout the four ages, there is no liberation; the Messenger of Death keeps such a person under his gaze. ||9||
|
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
जम दरि बाधे मिलहि सजाई ॥
Jam ḏar bāḏẖe milėh sajā▫ī.
At Death's door, he is tied up and punished;
|
ਤਿਸੁ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ॥
तिसु अपराधी गति नही काई ॥
Ŧis aprāḏẖī gaṯ nahī kā▫ī.
such a sinner does not obtain salvation.
|
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਮੀਨੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
करण पलाव करे बिललावै जिउ कुंडी मीनु पराता हे ॥१०॥
Karaṇ palāv kare billāvai ji▫o kundī mīn parāṯā he. ||10||
He cries out in pain, like the fish pierced by the hook. ||10||
|
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਾਸੀ ਪੜੈ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
साकतु फासी पड़ै इकेला ॥
Sākaṯ fāsī paṛai ikelā.
The faithless cynic is caught in the noose all alone.
|
ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
जम वसि कीआ अंधु दुहेला ॥
Jam vas kī▫ā anḏẖ ḏuhelā.
The miserable spiritually blind person is caught in the power of Death.
|
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
राम नाम बिनु मुकति न सूझै आजु कालि पचि जाता हे ॥११॥
Rām nām bin mukaṯ na sūjẖai āj kāl pacẖ jāṯā he. ||11||
Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not known. He shall waste away, today or tomorrow. ||11||
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
सतिगुर बाझु न बेली कोई ॥
Saṯgur bājẖ na belī ko▫ī.
Other than the True Guru, no one is your friend.
|
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਰਾਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
ऐथै ओथै राखा प्रभु सोई ॥
Aithai othai rākẖā parabẖ so▫ī.
Here and hereafter, God is the Savior.
|
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਇਉ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਮਿਲਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
राम नामु देवै करि किरपा इउ सललै सलल मिलाता हे ॥१२॥
Rām nām ḏevai kar kirpā i▫o sallai salal milāṯā he. ||12||
He grants His Grace, and bestows the Lord's Name. He merges with Him, like water with water. ||12||
