ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
छोडिहु निंदा ताति पराई ॥
Cẖẖodihu ninḏā ṯāṯ parā▫ī.
Abandon slander and envy of others.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
पड़ि पड़ि दझहि साति न आई ॥
Paṛ paṛ ḏajẖėh sāṯ na ā▫ī.
Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
मिलि सतसंगति नामु सलाहहु आतम रामु सखाई हे ॥७॥
Mil saṯsangaṯ nām salāhahu āṯam rām sakẖā▫ī he. ||7||
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7||
|
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
छोडहु काम क्रोधु बुरिआई ॥
Cẖẖodahu kām kroḏẖ buri▫ā▫ī.
Abandon sexual desire, anger and wickedness.

ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥
हउमै धंधु छोडहु ल्मपटाई ॥
Ha▫umai ḏẖanḏẖ cẖẖodahu lamptā▫ī.
Abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
सतिगुर सरणि परहु ता उबरहु इउ तरीऐ भवजलु भाई हे ॥८॥
Saṯgur saraṇ parahu ṯā ubrahu i▫o ṯarī▫ai bẖavjal bẖā▫ī he. ||8||
If you seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, then you shall be saved. In this way you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8||
|
ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥
आगै बिमल नदी अगनि बिखु झेला ॥
Āgai bimal naḏī agan bikẖ jẖelā.
In the hereafter, you shall have to cross over the fiery river of poisonous flames.
|
ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
तिथै अवरु न कोई जीउ इकेला ॥
Ŧithai avar na ko▫ī jī▫o ikelā.
No one else will be there; your soul shall be all alone.
|
ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
भड़ भड़ अगनि सागरु दे लहरी पड़ि दझहि मनमुख ताई हे ॥९॥
Bẖaṛ bẖaṛ agan sāgar ḏe lahrī paṛ ḏajẖėh manmukẖ ṯā▫ī he. ||9||
The ocean of fire spits out waves of searing flames; the self-willed manmukhs fall into it, and are roasted there. ||9||
|
ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
गुर पहि मुकति दानु दे भाणै ॥
Gur pėh mukaṯ ḏān ḏe bẖāṇai.
Liberation comes from the Guru; He grants this blessing by the Pleasure of His Will.

ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
जिनि पाइआ सोई बिधि जाणै ॥
Jin pā▫i▫ā so▫ī biḏẖ jāṇai.
He alone knows the way, who obtains it.
|
ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
जिन पाइआ तिन पूछहु भाई सुखु सतिगुर सेव कमाई हे ॥१०॥
Jin pā▫i▫ā ṯin pūcẖẖahu bẖā▫ī sukẖ saṯgur sev kamā▫ī he. ||10||
So ask one who has obtained it, O Siblings of Destiny. Serve the True Guru, and find peace. ||10||
|
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥
गुर बिनु उरझि मरहि बेकारा ॥
Gur bin urajẖ marėh bekārā.
Without the Guru, he dies entangled in sin and corruption.
|
ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥
जमु सिरि मारे करे खुआरा ॥
Jam sir māre kare kẖu▫ārā.
The Messenger of Death smashes his head and humiliates him.
|
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
बाधे मुकति नाही नर निंदक डूबहि निंद पराई हे ॥११॥
Bāḏẖe mukaṯ nāhī nar ninḏak dūbėh ninḏ parā▫ī he. ||11||
The slanderous person is not freed of his bonds; he is drowned, slandering others. ||11||
|
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥
बोलहु साचु पछाणहु अंदरि ॥
Bolhu sācẖ pacẖẖāṇhu anḏar.
So speak the Truth, and realize the Lord deep within.
|
ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥
दूरि नाही देखहु करि नंदरि ॥
Ḏūr nāhī ḏekẖhu kar nanḏar.
He is not far away; look, and see Him.
|
ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
बिघनु नाही गुरमुखि तरु तारी इउ भवजलु पारि लंघाई हे ॥१२॥
Bigẖan nāhī gurmukẖ ṯar ṯārī i▫o bẖavjal pār langẖā▫ī he. ||12||
No obstacles shall block your way; become Gurmukh, and cross over to the other side. This is the way to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||
|
ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥
देही अंदरि नामु निवासी ॥
Ḏehī anḏar nām nivāsī.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body.
|
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
आपे करता है अबिनासी ॥
Āpe karṯā hai abẖināsī.
The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable.
|
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
ना जीउ मरै न मारिआ जाई करि देखै सबदि रजाई हे ॥१३॥
Nā jī▫o marai na māri▫ā jā▫ī kar ḏekẖai sabaḏ rajā▫ī he. ||13||
The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13||
|
ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥
ओहु निरमलु है नाही अंधिआरा ॥
Oh nirmal hai nāhī anḏẖi▫ārā.
He is immaculate, and has no darkness.
|
ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
ओहु आपे तखति बहै सचिआरा ॥
Oh āpe ṯakẖaṯ bahai sacẖi▫ārā.
The True Lord Himself sits upon His throne.
|
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
साकत कूड़े बंधि भवाईअहि मरि जनमहि आई जाई हे ॥१४॥
Sākaṯ kūṛe banḏẖ bẖavā▫ī▫ah mar janmėh ā▫ī jā▫ī he. ||14||
The faithless cynics are bound and gagged, and forced to wander in reincarnation. They die, and are reborn, and continue coming and going. ||14||
|
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
गुर के सेवक सतिगुर पिआरे ॥
Gur ke sevak saṯgur pi▫āre.
The Guru's servants are the Beloved of the True Guru.
|
ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
ओइ बैसहि तखति सु सबदु वीचारे ॥
O▫e baisėh ṯakẖaṯ so sabaḏ vīcẖāre.
Contemplating the Shabad, they sit upon His throne.
|
ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
ततु लहहि अंतरगति जाणहि सतसंगति साचु वडाई हे ॥१५॥
Ŧaṯ lahėh anṯargaṯ jāṇėh saṯsangaṯ sācẖ vadā▫ī he. ||15||
They realize the essence of reality, and know the state of their inner being. This is the true glorious greatness of those who join the Sat Sangat. ||15||
|
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
आपि तरै जनु पितरा तारे ॥
Āp ṯarai jan piṯrā ṯāre.
He Himself saves His humble servant, and saves his ancestors as well.
|
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
संगति मुकति सु पारि उतारे ॥
Sangaṯ mukaṯ so pār uṯāre.
His companions are liberated; He carries them across.
|
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥
नानकु तिस का लाला गोला जिनि गुरमुखि हरि लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥६॥
Nānak ṯis kā lālā golā jin gurmukẖ har liv lā▫ī he. ||16||6||
Nanak is the servant and slave of that Gurmukh who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Lord. ||16||6||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਕੇਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਵਰਤੇ ਗੁਬਾਰੈ ॥
केते जुग वरते गुबारै ॥
Keṯe jug varṯe gubārai.
For many ages, only darkness prevailed;
|
ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥
ताड़ी लाई अपर अपारै ॥
Ŧāṛī lā▫ī apar apārai.
the infinite, endless Lord was absorbed in the primal void.
|
ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
धुंधूकारि निरालमु बैठा ना तदि धंधु पसारा हे ॥१॥
Ḏẖunḏẖūkār nirālam baiṯẖā nā ṯaḏ ḏẖanḏẖ pasārā he. ||1||
He sat alone and unaffected in absolute darkness; the world of conflict did not exist. ||1||
|
ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
जुग छतीह तिनै वरताए ॥
Jug cẖẖaṯīh ṯinai varṯā▫e.
Thirty-six ages passed like this.
|
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
जिउ तिसु भाणा तिवै चलाए ॥
Ji▫o ṯis bẖāṇā ṯivai cẖalā▫e.
He causes all to happen by the Pleasure of His Will.
|
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
तिसहि सरीकु न दीसै कोई आपे अपर अपारा हे ॥२॥
Ŧisėh sarīk na ḏīsai ko▫ī āpe apar apārā he. ||2||
No rival of His can be seen. He Himself is infinite and endless. ||2||
|
ਗੁਪਤੇ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਤੁਆਰੇ ॥
गुपते बूझहु जुग चतुआरे ॥
Gupṯe būjẖhu jug cẖaṯu▫āre.
God is hidden throughout the four ages - understand this well.
|
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰੇ ॥
घटि घटि वरतै उदर मझारे ॥
Gẖat gẖat varṯai uḏar majẖāre.
He pervades each and every heart, and is contained within the belly.
|
ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕਾ ਏਕੀ ਵਰਤੈ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
जुगु जुगु एका एकी वरतै कोई बूझै गुर वीचारा हे ॥३॥
Jug jug ekā ekī varṯai ko▫ī būjẖai gur vīcẖārā he. ||3||
The One and Only Lord prevails throughout the ages. How rare are those who contemplate the Guru, and understand this. ||3||
|
ਬਿੰਦੁ ਰਕਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਆ ॥
बिंदु रकतु मिलि पिंडु सरीआ ॥
Binḏ rakaṯ mil pind sarī▫ā.
From the union of the sperm and the egg, the body was formed.
|
ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੀਆ ॥
पउणु पाणी अगनी मिलि जीआ ॥
Pa▫uṇ pāṇī agnī mil jī▫ā.
From the union of air, water and fire, the living being is made.
|
ਆਪੇ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
आपे चोज करे रंग महली होर माइआ मोह पसारा हे ॥४॥
Āpe cẖoj kare rang mahlī hor mā▫i▫ā moh pasārā he. ||4||
He Himself plays joyfully in the mansion of the body; all the rest is just attachment to Maya's expanse. ||4||
|
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥
गरभ कुंडल महि उरध धिआनी ॥
Garabẖ kundal mėh uraḏẖ ḏẖi▫ānī.
Within the mother's womb, upside-down, the mortal meditated on God.
|
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
आपे जाणै अंतरजामी ॥
Āpe jāṇai anṯarjāmī.
The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything.
|
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
सासि सासि सचु नामु समाले अंतरि उदर मझारा हे ॥५॥
Sās sās sacẖ nām samāle anṯar uḏar majẖārā he. ||5||
With each and every breath, he contemplated the True Name, deep within himself, within the womb. ||5||
