ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੂਅਰ ਤਾਪੈ
अंतरि अगनि न गुर बिनु बूझै बाहरि पूअर तापै ॥
Anṯar agan na gur bin būjẖai bāhar pū▫ar ṯāpai.
Without the Guru, his inner fire is quenched not, but he burns fires around him.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੀ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਆਪੈ
गुर सेवा बिनु भगति न होवी किउ करि चीनसि आपै ॥
Gur sevā bin bẖagaṯ na hovī ki▫o kar cẖīnas āpai.
Without serving the Guru, Lord's meditation is embraced not, How can man of himself know the Lord?

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਜਾਪੈ
निंदा करि करि नरक निवासी अंतरि आतम जापै ॥
Ninḏā kar kar narak nivāsī anṯar āṯam jāpai.
Slandering others, he abides in hell. Within him is the obscure darkness of spiritual darkness.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਪਾਪੈ ॥੩॥
अठसठि तीरथ भरमि विगूचहि किउ मलु धोपै पापै ॥३॥
Aṯẖsaṯẖ ṯirath bẖaram vigūcẖėh ki▫o mal ḏẖopai pāpai. ||3||
Wandering at sixty eight holies he is ruined. How can his filth of sins be washed away?

ਛਾਣੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ
छाणी खाकु बिभूत चड़ाई माइआ का मगु जोहै ॥
Cẖẖāṇī kẖāk bibẖūṯ cẖaṛā▫ī mā▫i▫ā kā mag johai.
He sifts dust, applies ashes to his body and looks for the way of wealth.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਛੋਹੈ
अंतरि बाहरि एकु न जाणै साचु कहे ते छोहै ॥
Anṯar bāhar ek na jāṇai sācẖ kahe ṯe cẖẖohai.
Within and without he realises not the One Lord. If some one tells the truth to him, he grows angry.

ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਓਹੈ
पाठु पड़ै मुखि झूठो बोलै निगुरे की मति ओहै ॥
Pāṯẖ paṛai mukẖ jẖūṯẖo bolai nigure kī maṯ ohai.
He reads religious books and with his mouth he utters falsehood.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੪॥
नामु न जपई किउ सुखु पावै बिनु नावै किउ सोहै ॥४॥
Nām na jap▫ī ki▫o sukẖ pāvai bin nāvai ki▫o sohai. ||4||
Some shave their heads, some keep matted-locks, some wear hair-tufts and some through pride remain silent.

ਮੂੰਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇ ਜਟਾ ਸਿਖ ਬਾਧੀ ਮੋਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ
मूंडु मुडाइ जटा सिख बाधी मोनि रहै अभिमाना ॥
Mūnd mudā▫e jatā sikẖ bāḏẖī mon rahai abẖimānā.
Some shave their heads, some keep matted-locks, some wear hair-tufts and some through pride remain silent.

ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਤ ਆਤਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ
मनूआ डोलै दह दिस धावै बिनु रत आतम गिआना ॥
Manū▫ā dolai ḏah ḏis ḏẖāvai bin raṯ āṯam gi▫ānā.
But without the love of Divine knowledge, their mind wavers and wanders in ten directions,

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ
अम्रितु छोडि महा बिखु पीवै माइआ का देवाना ॥
Amriṯ cẖẖod mahā bikẖ pīvai mā▫i▫ā kā ḏevānā.
Maddened by riches, man abandons Nectar and drinks the deadly poison.

ਕਿਰਤੁ ਮਿਟਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਸੂਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੫॥
किरतु न मिटई हुकमु न बूझै पसूआ माहि समाना ॥५॥
Kiraṯ na mit▫ī hukam na būjẖai pasū▫ā māhi samānā. ||5||
The evil deeds are effaced not. He realises not the Lord's will and enters into the bodies of beasts.

ਹਾਥ ਕਮੰਡਲੁ ਕਾਪੜੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਭਾਰੀ
हाथ कमंडलु कापड़ीआ मनि त्रिसना उपजी भारी ॥
Hāth kamandal kāpṛī▫ā man ṯarisnā upjī bẖārī.
Excessive desire wells up in the mind of the ascetic wearing a patched coat and holding a bowl in his hand.

ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ
इसत्री तजि करि कामि विआपिआ चितु लाइआ पर नारी ॥
Isṯarī ṯaj kar kām vi▫āpi▫ā cẖiṯ lā▫i▫ā par nārī.
Abandoning his own wife, he is engrossed in just and attaches his mind to another's woman.

ਸਿਖ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਲੰਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ
सिख करे करि सबदु न चीनै ल्मपटु है बाजारी ॥
Sikẖ kare kar sabaḏ na cẖīnai lampat hai bājārī.
He instructs others, but himself reflects not on the Name and attaches himself to a whore.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੀ ਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੬॥
अंतरि बिखु बाहरि निभराती ता जमु करे खुआरी ॥६॥
Anṯar bikẖ bāhar nibẖrāṯī ṯā jam kare kẖu▫ārī. ||6||
With poison in his mind, from without he pretends to be doubt free. so Yama humiliates him.

ਸੋ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ
सो संनिआसी जो सतिगुर सेवै विचहु आपु गवाए ॥
So sani▫āsī jo saṯgur sevai vicẖahu āp gavā▫e.
He alone is a renouncer, who serves the True Guru and removes his self-conceit from within him,

ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਰਈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ
छादन भोजन की आस न करई अचिंतु मिलै सो पाए ॥
Cẖẖāḏan bẖojan kī ās na kar▫ī acẖinṯ milai so pā▫e.
He asks not for clothes and food and he accepts whatever he receives without asking.

ਬਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਖਿਮਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਲਾਏ
बकै न बोलै खिमा धनु संग्रहै तामसु नामि जलाए ॥
Bakai na bolai kẖimā ḏẖan sangrahai ṯāmas nām jalā▫e.
He chatters and talks not in vain, amasses the wealth of forbearance and he burns his anger with the Lord's Name.

ਧਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥
धनु गिरही संनिआसी जोगी जि हरि चरणी चितु लाए ॥७॥
Ḏẖan girhī sani▫āsī jogī jė har cẖarṇī cẖiṯ lā▫e. ||7||
Blessed is such a householder, a renouncer and a Yogi, who fixes his mind on God's feet.

ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ
आस निरास रहै संनिआसी एकसु सिउ लिव लाए ॥
Ās nirās rahai sani▫āsī ekas si▫o liv lā▫e.
The Sanyasi remains desireless amidst desires and is attuned to the one Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਏ
हरि रसु पीवै ता साति आवै निज घरि ताड़ी लाए ॥
Har ras pīvai ṯā sāṯ āvai nij gẖar ṯāṛī lā▫e.
If he in-drinks God's elixir and is rapt in trance in his own home, it is then that be obtains peace.

ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ
मनूआ न डोलै गुरमुखि बूझै धावतु वरजि रहाए ॥
Manū▫ā na dolai gurmukẖ būjẖai ḏẖāvaṯ varaj rahā▫e.
By the Guru's grace, he understands his Lord, His mind wobbles not he prohibits and restrains its wanderings.

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖੋਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥
ग्रिहु सरीरु गुरमती खोजे नामु पदारथु पाए ॥८॥
Garihu sarīr gurmaṯī kẖoje nām paḏārath pā▫e. ||8||
Searching his body-home by Guru's instruction he obtains the wealth of the Lord's Name.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु सरेसट नामि रते वीचारी ॥
Barahmā bisan mahes saresat nām raṯe vīcẖārī.
Imbued with the Name's meditation, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva become sublime.

ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਗਨ ਪਤਾਲੀ ਜੰਤਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ
खाणी बाणी गगन पताली जंता जोति तुमारी ॥
Kẖāṇī baṇī gagan paṯālī janṯā joṯ ṯumārī.
Thine light, O Lord, is in the four sources of creation, four stages of thought, firmament, the nether regions and all the creatures.

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੀ
सभि सुख मुकति नाम धुनि बाणी सचु नामु उर धारी ॥
Sabẖ sukẖ mukaṯ nām ḏẖun baṇī sacẖ nām ur ḏẖārī.
All the comforts of emancipation are in the meditation of Lord's Name and Gurbani, thus I enshrine the True Name within my mind.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੯॥੭॥
नाम बिना नही छूटसि नानक साची तरु तू तारी ॥९॥७॥
Nām binā nahī cẖẖūtas Nānak sācẖī ṯar ṯū ṯārī. ||9||7||
Without the Name, one is released not, O Nanak, so swim thou across, embarking on the Name's true boat.

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ
मारू महला १ ॥
Mārū mėhlā 1.
Maru 1st Guru.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਰੇ
मात पिता संजोगि उपाए रकतु बिंदु मिलि पिंडु करे ॥
Māṯ piṯā sanjog upā▫e rakaṯ binḏ mil pind kare.
The mortal comes into being from the union of the mother and father. The female's ovum and the male's sperm meet to form the body.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਰਭ ਉਰਧਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
अंतरि गरभ उरधि लिव लागी सो प्रभु सारे दाति करे ॥१॥
Anṯar garabẖ uraḏẖ liv lāgī so parabẖ sāre ḏāṯ kare. ||1||
In the mother's womb attuned to the Lord's love. That Lord sustains him there and blesses him with the gift of safety.

ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੈ
संसारु भवजलु किउ तरै ॥
Sansār bẖavjal ki▫o ṯarai.
How can the mortal cross the aweul world-ocean?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ਟਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
गुरमुखि नामु निरंजनु पाईऐ अफरिओ भारु अफारु टरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gurmukẖ nām niranjan pā▫ī▫ai afri▫o bẖār afār tarai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
By the Guru's grace the immaculate Lord's Name is obtained and the unendurable load of sins is removed. Pause.

ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਉ ਹਰੇ
ते गुण विसरि गए अपराधी मै बउरा किआ करउ हरे ॥
Ŧe guṇ visar ga▫e aprāḏẖī mai ba▫urā ki▫ā kara▫o hare.
I, the sinner, have forgotten the goodness of Lord. What can I, the mad man, do now, O God?

ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
तू दाता दइआलु सभै सिरि अहिनिसि दाति समारि करे ॥२॥
Ŧū ḏāṯā ḏa▫i▫āl sabẖai sir ahinis ḏāṯ samār kare. ||2||
Thou, O Lord, are the compassionate Giver over the heads of all Day and night Thou give gifts and take care of all.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ
चारि पदारथ लै जगि जनमिआ सिव सकती घरि वासु धरे ॥
Cẖār paḏārath lai jag janmi▫ā siv sakṯī gẖar vās ḏẖare.
Man is born in this world to obtain the four life-objects, but his soul takes abode in the house of mammon.
