ਮਾਇਆ ਮੁਈ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਆ ਸਰੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਮੈ ਮਤੁ ॥ माइआ मुई न मनु मुआ सरु लहरी मै मतु ॥ Maa▫i▫aa mu▫ee na man mu▫aa sar lahree mæ maṫ. Maya is not conquered, and the mind is not subdued; the waves of desire in the world-ocean are intoxicating wine. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਜਲ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਰਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ॥ बोहिथु जल सिरि तरि टिकै साचा वखरु जितु ॥ Bohiṫʰ jal sir ṫar tikæ saachaa vakʰar jiṫ. The boat crosses over the water, carrying the true merchandise. ਮਾਣਕੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਸੀ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਤੁ ॥ माणकु मन महि मनु मारसी सचि न लागै कतु ॥ Maaṇak man mėh man maarsee sach na laagæ kaṫ. The jewel within the mind subdues the mind; attached to the Truth, it is not broken. ਰਾਜਾ ਤਖਤਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਗੁਣੀ ਭੈ ਪੰਚਾਇਣ ਰਤੁ ॥੧॥ राजा तखति टिकै गुणी भै पंचाइण रतु ॥१॥ Raajaa ṫakʰaṫ tikæ guṇee bʰæ panchaa▫iṇ raṫ. ||1|| The king is seated upon the throne, imbued with the Fear of God and the five qualities. ||1|| ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੁ ॥ बाबा साचा साहिबु दूरि न देखु ॥ Baabaa saachaa saahib ḋoor na ḋékʰ. O Baba, do not see your True Lord and Master as being far away. ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ सरब जोति जगजीवना सिरि सिरि साचा लेखु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Sarab joṫ jagjeevanaa sir sir saachaa lékʰ. ||1|| rahaa▫o. He is the Light of all, the Life of the world; The True Lord writes His Inscription on each and every head. ||1||Pause|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਰਿਖੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਸੰਕਰੁ ਇੰਦੁ ਤਪੈ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥ ब्रहमा बिसनु रिखी मुनी संकरु इंदु तपै भेखारी ॥ Barahmaa bisan rikʰee munee sankar inḋ ṫapæ bʰékʰaaree. Brahma and Vishnu, the Rishis and the silent sages, Shiva and Indra, penitents and beggars - ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਹੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਆਕੀ ਮਰਹਿ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥ मानै हुकमु सोहै दरि साचै आकी मरहि अफारी ॥ Maanæ hukam sohæ ḋar saachæ aakee marėh afaaree. whoever obeys the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, looks beautiful in the Court of the True Lord, while the stubborn rebels die. ਜੰਗਮ ਜੋਧ ਜਤੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ जंगम जोध जती संनिआसी गुरि पूरै वीचारी ॥ Jangam joḋʰ jaṫee sani▫aasee gur pooræ veechaaree. The wandering beggars, warriors, celibates and Sannyasi hermits - through the Perfect Guru, consider this: ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ बिनु सेवा फलु कबहु न पावसि सेवा करणी सारी ॥२॥ Bin sévaa fal kabahu na paavas sévaa karṇee saaree. ||2|| without selfless service, no one ever receives the fruits of their rewards. Serving the Lord is the most excellent action. ||2|| ਨਿਧਨਿਆ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਗੁਰਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿੰਮਾਣਿਆ ਤੂ ਮਾਣੁ ॥ निधनिआ धनु निगुरिआ गुरु निंमाणिआ तू माणु ॥ Niḋʰni▫aa ḋʰan niguri▫aa gur nimaaṇiaa ṫoo maaṇ. You are the wealth of the poor, the Guru of the guru-less, the honor of the dishonored. ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਨਿਤਾਣਿਆ ਤੂ ਤਾਣੁ ॥ अंधुलै माणकु गुरु पकड़िआ निताणिआ तू ताणु ॥ Anḋʰulæ maaṇak gur pakṛi▫aa niṫaaṇi▫aa ṫoo ṫaaṇ. I am blind; I have grasped hold of the jewel, the Guru. You are the strength of the weak. ਹੋਮ ਜਪਾ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥ होम जपा नही जाणिआ गुरमती साचु पछाणु ॥ Hom japaa nahee jaaṇi▫aa gurmaṫee saach pachʰaaṇ. He is not known through burnt offerings and ritual chanting; the True Lord is known through the Guru’s Teachings. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੩॥ नाम बिना नाही दरि ढोई झूठा आवण जाणु ॥३॥ Naam binaa naahee ḋar dʰo▫ee jʰootʰaa aavaṇ jaaṇ. ||3|| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one finds shelter in the Court of the Lord; the false come and go in reincarnation. ||3|| ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ साचा नामु सलाहीऐ साचे ते त्रिपति होइ ॥ Saachaa naam salaahee▫æ saaché ṫé ṫaripaṫ ho▫é. So, praise the True Name, and through the True Name, you will find satisfaction. ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਜੀਐ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ गिआन रतनि मनु माजीऐ बहुड़ि न मैला होइ ॥ Gi▫aan raṫan man maajee▫æ bahuṛ na mælaa ho▫é. When the mind is cleaned with the jewel of spiritual wisdom, it does not become dirty again. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥ नानक सिरु दे छुटीऐ मनि तनि साचा सोइ ॥४॥१०॥ Naanak sir ḋé chʰutee▫æ man ṫan saachaa so▫é. ||4||10|| O Nanak! Giving one’s head, one is emancipated, and the mind and body become true. ||4||10|| ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ जब लगु साहिबु मनि वसै तब लगु बिघनु न होइ ॥ Jab lag saahib man vasæ ṫab lag bigʰan na ho▫é. As long as the Lord and Master dwells in the mind, no obstacles are encountered.
