ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਬਉਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਨਮੇ ਤਿਉ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਬਉਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਨਮੇ ਤਿਉ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ
जिउ आइआ तिउ जावहि बउरे जिउ जनमे तिउ मरणु भइआ ॥
Ji▫o ā▫i▫ā ṯi▫o jāvėh ba▫ure ji▫o janme ṯi▫o maraṇ bẖa▫i▫ā.
As you come, so will you leave, you fool; as you were born, so will you die.

Rāmkalī mėhlā 1.
Raamkalee, First Mehl:

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ
तनु धनु देखत गरबि गइआ ॥
Ŧan ḏẖan ḏekẖaṯ garab ga▫i▫ā.
Gazing upon your body and wealth, you are so proud.

ਜਿਉ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਕੀਏ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥
जिउ रस भोग कीए तेता दुखु लागै नामु विसारि भवजलि पइआ ॥१॥
Ji▫o ras bẖog kī▫e ṯeṯā ḏukẖ lāgai nām visār bẖavjal pa▫i▫ā. ||1||
As you enjoy pleasures, so will you suffer pain. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you will fall into the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਹਿ ਕੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
कनिक कामनी सिउ हेतु वधाइहि की नामु विसारहि भरमि गइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Kanik kāmnī si▫o heṯ vaḏẖā▫ihi kī nām visārėh bẖaram ga▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Your love for gold and sexual pleasures increases; why have you forgotten the Naam, and why do you wander in doubt? ||1||Pause||

ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਸਟੁ ਭਇਆ
जतु सतु संजमु सीलु न राखिआ प्रेत पिंजर महि कासटु भइआ ॥
Jaṯ saṯ sanjam sīl na rākẖi▫ā pareṯ pinjar mėh kāsat bẖa▫i▫ā.
You do not practice truth, abstinence, self-discipline or humility; the ghost within your skeleton has turned to dry wood.

ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਜਇਆ ॥੨॥
पुंनु दानु इसनानु न संजमु साधसंगति बिनु बादि जइआ ॥२॥
Punn ḏān isnān na sanjam sāḏẖsangaṯ bin bāḏ ja▫i▫ā. ||2||
You have not practiced charity, donations, cleansing baths or austerities. Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, your life has gone in vain. ||2||

ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ
लालचि लागै नामु बिसारिओ आवत जावत जनमु गइआ ॥
Lālacẖ lāgai nām bisāri▫o āvaṯ jāvaṯ janam ga▫i▫ā.
Attached to greed, you have forgotten the Naam. Coming and going, your life has been ruined.

ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਧਾਇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲ ਗਇਆ ॥੩॥
जा जमु धाइ केस गहि मारै सुरति नही मुखि काल गइआ ॥३॥
Jā jam ḏẖā▫e kes gėh mārai suraṯ nahī mukẖ kāl ga▫i▫ā. ||3||
When the Messenger of Death grabs you by your hair, you will be punished. You are unconscious, and have fallen into Death's mouth. ||3||

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ
अहिनिसि निंदा ताति पराई हिरदै नामु न सरब दइआ ॥
Ahinis ninḏā ṯāṯ parā▫ī hirḏai nām na sarab ḏa▫i▫ā.
Day and night, you jealously slander others; in your heart, you have neither the Naam, nor compassion for all.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੪॥
बिनु गुर सबद न गति पति पावहि राम नाम बिनु नरकि गइआ ॥४॥
Bin gur sabaḏ na gaṯ paṯ pāvahi rām nām bin narak ga▫i▫ā. ||4||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you will not find salvation or honor. Without the Lord's Name, you shall go to hell. ||4||

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਵੇਸ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਟੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਪ ਮਹਿ ਗਲਤੁ ਗਇਆ
खिन महि वेस करहि नटूआ जिउ मोह पाप महि गलतु गइआ ॥
Kẖin mėh ves karahi natū▫ā ji▫o moh pāp mėh galaṯ ga▫i▫ā.
In an instant, you change into various costumes, like a juggler; you are entangled in emotional attachment and sin.

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਮਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੫॥
इत उत माइआ देखि पसारी मोह माइआ कै मगनु भइआ ॥५॥
Iṯ uṯ mā▫i▫ā ḏekẖ pasārī moh mā▫i▫ā kai magan bẖa▫i▫ā. ||5||
You gaze here and there upon the expanse of Maya; you are intoxicated with attachment to Maya. ||5||

ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਥਾਰ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਪਇਆ
करहि बिकार विथार घनेरे सुरति सबद बिनु भरमि पइआ ॥
Karahi bikār vithār gẖanere suraṯ sabaḏ bin bẖaram pa▫i▫ā.
You act in corruption, and put on ostentatious shows, but without awareness of the Shabad, you have fallen into confusion.

ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ॥੬॥
हउमै रोगु महा दुखु लागा गुरमति लेवहु रोगु गइआ ॥६॥
Ha▫umai rog mahā ḏukẖ lāgā gurmaṯ levhu rog ga▫i▫ā. ||6||
You suffer great pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be rid of this disease. ||6||

ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ
सुख स्मपति कउ आवत देखै साकत मनि अभिमानु भइआ ॥
Sukẖ sampaṯ ka▫o āvaṯ ḏekẖai sākaṯ man abẖimān bẖa▫i▫ā.
Seeing peace and wealth come to him, the faithless cynic become proud in his mind.

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਇਆ ॥੭॥
जिस का इहु तनु धनु सो फिरि लेवै अंतरि सहसा दूखु पइआ ॥७॥
Jis kā ih ṯan ḏẖan so fir levai anṯar sahsā ḏūkẖ pa▫i▫ā. ||7||
But He who owns this body and wealth, takes them back again, and then the mortal feels anxiety and pain deep within. ||7||

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਚਾਲੈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਮਇਆ
अंति कालि किछु साथि न चालै जो दीसै सभु तिसहि मइआ ॥
Anṯ kāl kicẖẖ sāth na cẖālai jo ḏīsai sabẖ ṯisėh ma▫i▫ā.
At the very last instant, nothing goes along with you; all is visible only by His Mercy.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੮॥
आदि पुरखु अपर्मपरु सो प्रभु हरि नामु रिदै लै पारि पइआ ॥८॥
Āḏ purakẖ aprampar so parabẖ har nām riḏai lai pār pa▫i▫ā. ||8||
God is our Primal and Infinite Lord; enshrining the Lord's Name in the heart, one crosses over. ||8||

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਅਸਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ
मूए कउ रोवहि किसहि सुणावहि भै सागर असरालि पइआ ॥
Mū▫e ka▫o rovėh kisėh suṇāvėh bẖai sāgar asrāl pa▫i▫ā.
You weep for the dead, but who hears you weeping? The dead have fallen to the serpent in the terrifying world-ocean.

ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੯॥
देखि कुट्मबु माइआ ग्रिह मंदरु साकतु जंजालि परालि पइआ ॥९॥
Ḏekẖ kutamb mā▫i▫ā garih manḏar sākaṯ janjāl parāl pa▫i▫ā. ||9||
Gazing upon his family, wealth, household and mansions, the faithless cynic is entangled in worthless worldly affairs. ||9||

ਜਾ ਆਏ ਤਾ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਪਠਾਏ ਚਾਲੇ ਤਿਨੈ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਲਇਆ
जा आए ता तिनहि पठाए चाले तिनै बुलाइ लइआ ॥
Jā ā▫e ṯā ṯinėh paṯẖā▫e cẖāle ṯinai bulā▫e la▫i▫ā.
He comes when the Lord sends him; when the Lord calls him back, he goes.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
जो किछु करणा सो करि रहिआ बखसणहारै बखसि लइआ ॥१०॥
Jo kicẖẖ karṇā so kar rahi▫ā bakẖsaṇhārai bakẖas la▫i▫ā. ||10||
Whatever he does, the Lord is doing. The Forgiving Lord forgives him. ||10||

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਖੋਜੁ ਭਇਆ
जिनि एहु चाखिआ राम रसाइणु तिन की संगति खोजु भइआ ॥
Jin ehu cẖākẖi▫ā rām rasā▫iṇ ṯin kī sangaṯ kẖoj bẖa▫i▫ā.
I seek to be with those who have tasted this sublime essence of the Lord.

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
रिधि सिधि बुधि गिआनु गुरू ते पाइआ मुकति पदारथु सरणि पइआ ॥११॥
Riḏẖ siḏẖ buḏẖ gi▫ān gurū ṯe pā▫i▫ā mukaṯ paḏārath saraṇ pa▫i▫ā. ||11||
Wealth, miraculous spiritual powers, wisdom and spiritual knowledge, are obtained from the Guru. The treasure of liberation is obtained in His Sanctuary. ||11||

ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਲਇਆ ॥੧੨॥੭॥
आपु मारि गुरमुखि हरि पाए नानक सहजि समाइ लइआ ॥१२॥७॥
Āp mār gurmukẖ har pā▫e Nānak sahj samā▫e la▫i▫ā. ||12||7||
Conquering his self-conceit, the Gurmukh finds the Lord; O Nanak, he intuitively merges into the Lord. ||12||7||

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਕਤੁ ਭਇਆ
दुखु सुखु गुरमुखि सम करि जाणा हरख सोग ते बिरकतु भइआ ॥
Ḏukẖ sukẖ gurmukẖ sam kar jāṇā harakẖ sog ṯe birkaṯ bẖa▫i▫ā.
The Gurmukh looks upon pain and pleasure as one and the same; he remains untouched by joy and sorrow.
