ਹਠੁ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਛੀਜੈ ॥ हठु निग्रहु करि काइआ छीजै ॥ Haṯẖ nigarahu kar kā▫i▫ā cẖẖījai. Raamkalee, First Mehl: ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜੈ ॥੧॥ राम नाम सरि अवरु न पूजै ॥१॥ Rām nām sar avar na pūjai. ||1|| Nothing else is equal to worship of the Lord's Name. ||1|| ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ गुरु सेवि मना हरि जन संगु कीजै ॥ Gur sev manā har jan sang kījai. Serve the Guru, O mind, and associate with the humble servants of the Lord. ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जमु जंदारु जोहि नही साकै सरपनि डसि न सकै हरि का रसु पीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jam janḏār johi nahī sākai sarpan das na sakai har kā ras pījai. ||1|| rahā▫o. The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot touch you, and the serpent of Maya cannot sting you, when you drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ वादु पड़ै रागी जगु भीजै ॥ vāḏ paṛai rāgī jag bẖījai. The world reads the arguments, and is softened only by music. ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥ त्रै गुण बिखिआ जनमि मरीजै ॥ Ŧarai guṇ bikẖi▫ā janam marījai. In the three modes and corruption, they are born and die. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਸਹੀਜੈ ॥੨॥ राम नाम बिनु दूखु सहीजै ॥२॥ Rām nām bin ḏūkẖ sahījai. ||2|| Without the Lord's Name, they endure suffering and pain. ||2|| ਚਾੜਸਿ ਪਵਨੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ चाड़सि पवनु सिंघासनु भीजै ॥ Cẖāṛas pavan singẖāsan bẖījai. The Yogi draws the breath upwards, and opens the Tenth Gate. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥ राम नाम बिनु बिरथा सासु लीजै ॥३॥ Rām nām bin birthā sās lījai. ||3|| But without the Lord's Name, the breath he draws is useless. ||3|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि पंच अगनि किउ धीरजु धीजै ॥ Anṯar pancẖ agan ki▫o ḏẖīraj ḏẖījai. The fire of the five passions burns within him; how can he be calm? ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ निउली करम खटु करम करीजै ॥ Ni▫ulī karam kẖat karam karījai. He practices inner cleansing and the six rituals of purification. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਦੁ ਲਹੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि चोरु किउ सादु लहीजै ॥ Anṯar cẖor ki▫o sāḏ lahījai. The thief is within him; how can he taste the taste? ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥ गुरमुखि होइ काइआ गड़ु लीजै ॥४॥ Gurmukẖ ho▫e kā▫i▫ā gaṛ lījai. ||4|| One who becomes Gurmukh conquers the body-fortress. ||4|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि मैलु तीरथ भरमीजै ॥ Anṯar mail ṯirath bẖarmījai. With filth within, he wanders around at places of pilgrimage. ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਚ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ मनु नही सूचा किआ सोच करीजै ॥ Man nahī sūcẖā ki▫ā socẖ karījai. His mind is not pure, so what is the use of performing ritual cleansings? ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥ किरतु पइआ दोसु का कउ दीजै ॥५॥ Kiraṯ pa▫i▫ā ḏos kā ka▫o ḏījai. ||5|| He carries the karma of his own past actions; who else can he blame? ||5|| ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥ अंनु न खाहि देही दुखु दीजै ॥ Ann na kẖāhi ḏehī ḏukẖ ḏījai. He does not eat food; he tortures his body. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਥੀਜੈ ॥ बिनु गुर गिआन त्रिपति नही थीजै ॥ Bin gur gi▫ān ṯaripaṯ nahī thījai. Without the Guru's wisdom, he is not satisfied. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੬॥ मनमुखि जनमै जनमि मरीजै ॥६॥ Manmukẖ janmai janam marījai. ||6|| The self-willed manmukh is born only to die, and be born again. ||6|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ सतिगुर पूछि संगति जन कीजै ॥ Saṯgur pūcẖẖ sangaṯ jan kījai. Go, and ask the True Guru, and associate with the Lord's humble servants. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥ राम नाम बिनु किआ करमु कीजै ॥७॥ Rām nām bin ki▫ā karam kījai. ||7|| Without the Lord's Name, what can anyone do? ||7|| ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥ मनु हरि राचै नही जनमि मरीजै ॥ Man har rācẖai nahī janam marījai. Your mind shall merge into the Lord, and you shall not be reincarnated to die again. ਊਂਦਰ ਦੂੰਦਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥ ऊंदर दूंदर पासि धरीजै ॥ Ūʼnḏar ḏūʼnḏar pās ḏẖarījai. Silence the mouse scurrying around within you. ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥ धुर की सेवा रामु रवीजै ॥ Ḏẖur kī sevā rām ravījai. Serve the Primal Lord, by chanting the Lord's Name. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥ नानक नामु मिलै किरपा प्रभ कीजै ॥८॥५॥ Nānak nām milai kirpā parabẖ kījai. ||8||5|| O Nanak, God blesses us with His Name, when He grants His Grace. ||8||5||
