ਹਠੁ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਛੀਜੈ ॥ हठु निग्रहु करि काइआ छीजै ॥ Hatʰ nigarahu kar kaa▫i▫aa chʰeejæ. Practicing restraint by Hatha Yoga, the body wears away. ਵਰਤੁ ਤਪਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ वरतु तपनु करि मनु नही भीजै ॥ varaṫ ṫapan kar man nahee bʰeejæ. The mind is not softened by fasting or austerities. ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ रामकली महला १ ॥ Raamkalee mėhlaa 1. Raamkalee, First Mehl: ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜੈ ॥੧॥ राम नाम सरि अवरु न पूजै ॥१॥ Raam naam sar avar na poojæ. ||1|| Nothing else is equal to worship of the Lord’s Name. ||1|| ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ गुरु सेवि मना हरि जन संगु कीजै ॥ Gur sév manaa har jan sang keejæ. Serve the Guru, O mind, and associate with the humble servants of the Lord. ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जमु जंदारु जोहि नही साकै सरपनि डसि न सकै हरि का रसु पीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jam janḋaar johi nahee saakæ sarpan das na sakæ har kaa ras peejæ. ||1|| rahaa▫o. The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot touch you, and the serpent of Maya cannot sting you, when you drink the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ वादु पड़ै रागी जगु भीजै ॥ vaaḋ paṛæ raagee jag bʰeejæ. The world reads the arguments, and is softened only by music. ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥ त्रै गुण बिखिआ जनमि मरीजै ॥ Ṫaræ guṇ bikʰi▫aa janam mareejæ. In the three modes and corruption, they are born and die. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਸਹੀਜੈ ॥੨॥ राम नाम बिनु दूखु सहीजै ॥२॥ Raam naam bin ḋookʰ saheejæ. ||2|| Without the Lord’s Name, they endure suffering and pain. ||2|| ਚਾੜਸਿ ਪਵਨੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ चाड़सि पवनु सिंघासनु भीजै ॥ Chaaṛas pavan singʰaasan bʰeejæ. The Yogi draws the breath upwards, and opens the Tenth Gate. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥ राम नाम बिनु बिरथा सासु लीजै ॥३॥ Raam naam bin birṫʰaa saas leejæ. ||3|| But without the Lord’s Name, the breath he draws is useless. ||3|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि पंच अगनि किउ धीरजु धीजै ॥ Anṫar panch agan ki▫o ḋʰeeraj ḋʰeejæ. The fire of the five passions burns within him; how can he be calm? ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ निउली करम खटु करम करीजै ॥ Ni▫ulee karam kʰat karam kareejæ. He practices inner cleansing and the six rituals of purification. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਦੁ ਲਹੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि चोरु किउ सादु लहीजै ॥ Anṫar chor ki▫o saaḋ laheejæ. The thief is within him; how can he taste the taste? ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥ गुरमुखि होइ काइआ गड़ु लीजै ॥४॥ Gurmukʰ ho▫é kaa▫i▫aa gaṛ leejæ. ||4|| One who becomes Gurmukh conquers the body-fortress. ||4|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮੀਜੈ ॥ अंतरि मैलु तीरथ भरमीजै ॥ Anṫar mæl ṫiraṫʰ bʰarmeejæ. With filth within, he wanders around at places of pilgrimage. ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਚ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ मनु नही सूचा किआ सोच करीजै ॥ Man nahee soochaa ki▫aa soch kareejæ. His mind is not pure, so what is the use of performing ritual cleansings? ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥ किरतु पइआ दोसु का कउ दीजै ॥५॥ Kiraṫ pa▫i▫aa ḋos kaa ka▫o ḋeejæ. ||5|| He carries the karma of his own past actions; who else can he blame? ||5|| ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥ अंनु न खाहि देही दुखु दीजै ॥ Ann na kʰaahi ḋéhee ḋukʰ ḋeejæ. He does not eat food; he tortures his body. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਥੀਜੈ ॥ बिनु गुर गिआन त्रिपति नही थीजै ॥ Bin gur gi▫aan ṫaripaṫ nahee ṫʰeejæ. Without the Guru’s wisdom, he is not satisfied. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੬॥ मनमुखि जनमै जनमि मरीजै ॥६॥ Manmukʰ janmæ janam mareejæ. ||6|| The self-willed Manmukh is born only to die, and be born again. ||6|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ सतिगुर पूछि संगति जन कीजै ॥ Saṫgur poochʰ sangaṫ jan keejæ. Go, and ask the True Guru, and associate with the Lord’s humble servants. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥ राम नाम बिनु किआ करमु कीजै ॥७॥ Raam naam bin ki▫aa karam keejæ. ||7|| Without the Lord’s Name, what can anyone do? ||7|| ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥ मनु हरि राचै नही जनमि मरीजै ॥ Man har raachæ nahee janam mareejæ. Your mind shall merge into the Lord, and you shall not be reincarnated to die again. ਊਂਦਰ ਦੂੰਦਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥ ऊंदर दूंदर पासि धरीजै ॥ Ooⁿḋar ḋooⁿḋar paas ḋʰareejæ. Silence the mouse scurrying around within you. ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥ धुर की सेवा रामु रवीजै ॥ Ḋʰur kee sévaa raam raveejæ. Serve the Primal Lord, by chanting the Lord’s Name. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥ नानक नामु मिलै किरपा प्रभ कीजै ॥८॥५॥ Naanak naam milæ kirpaa parabʰ keejæ. ||8||5|| O Nanak! God blesses us with His Name, when He grants His Grace. ||8||5||
