Siree Raag, Fourth Mehl: ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥ पहिलै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि पाइआ उदर मंझारि ॥ Pahilæ pahræ ræṇ kæ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa har paa▫i▫aa uḋar manjʰaar. In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord places you in the womb. ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿ ॥ हरि धिआवै हरि उचरै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि हरि नामु समारि ॥ Har ḋʰi▫aavæ har uchræ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa har har naam samaar. You meditate on the Lord, and chant the Lord’s Name, O my merchant friend. You contemplate the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥ हरि हरि नामु जपे आराधे विचि अगनी हरि जपि जीविआ ॥ Har har naam japé aaraaḋʰé vich agnee har jap jeevi▫aa. Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam. ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਰਸੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਥੀਵਿਆ ॥ बाहरि जनमु भइआ मुखि लागा सरसे पिता मात थीविआ ॥ Baahar janam bʰa▫i▫aa mukʰ laagaa sarsé piṫaa maaṫ ṫʰeevi▫aa. You are born and you come out, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face. ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ जिस की वसतु तिसु चेतहु प्राणी करि हिरदै गुरमुखि बीचारि ॥ Jis kee vasaṫ ṫis chéṫahu paraaṇee kar hirḋæ gurmukʰ beechaar. Remember the One, O mortal, to whom the child belongs. As Gurmukh, reflect upon Him within your heart. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ कहु नानक प्राणी पहिलै पहरै हरि जपीऐ किरपा धारि ॥१॥ Kaho Naanak paraaṇee pahilæ pahræ har japee▫æ kirpaa ḋʰaar. ||1|| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, dwell upon the Lord, who shall shower you with His Grace. ||1|| ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ दूजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु लागा दूजै भाइ ॥ Ḋoojæ pahræ ræṇ kæ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa man laagaa ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é. In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the mind is attached to the love of duality. ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਲੀਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥ मेरा मेरा करि पालीऐ वणजारिआ मित्रा ले मात पिता गलि लाइ ॥ Méraa méraa kar paalee▫æ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa lé maaṫ piṫaa gal laa▫é. Mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming,”He is mine, he is mine”; so is the child brought up, O my merchant friend. ਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਏ ॥ लावै मात पिता सदा गल सेती मनि जाणै खटि खवाए ॥ Laavæ maaṫ piṫaa saḋaa gal séṫee man jaaṇæ kʰat kʰavaa▫é. Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them. ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਦਿਤੇ ਨੋ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥ जो देवै तिसै न जाणै मूड़ा दिते नो लपटाए ॥ Jo ḋévæ ṫisæ na jaaṇæ mooṛaa ḋiṫé no laptaa▫é. The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ कहु नानक दूजै पहरै प्राणी तिसु कालु न कबहूं खाइ ॥२॥ Kaho Naanak ḋoojæ pahræ paraaṇee ṫis kaal na kabahooⁿ kʰaa▫é. ||2|| Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, death never devours you. ||2|| ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ कोई गुरमुखि होवै सु करै वीचारु हरि धिआवै मनि लिव लाइ ॥ Ko▫ee gurmukʰ hovæ so karæ veechaar har ḋʰi▫aavæ man liv laa▫é. Rare is the Gurmukh who reflects upon, meditates upon, and within his mind, is lovingly attached to the Lord. ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਆਲਿ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ॥ तीजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु लगा आलि जंजालि ॥ Ṫeejæ pahræ ræṇ kæ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa man lagaa aal janjaal. In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs. ਧਨੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ धनु चितवै धनु संचवै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि नामा हरि न समालि ॥ Ḋʰan chiṫvæ ḋʰan sanchvæ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa har naamaa har na samaal. You think of wealth, and gather wealth, O my merchant friend, but you do not contemplate the Lord or the Lord’s Name. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥ हरि नामा हरि हरि कदे न समालै जि होवै अंति सखाई ॥ Har naamaa har har kaḋé na samaalæ jė hovæ anṫ sakʰaa▫ee. You never dwell upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, who will be your only Helper and Support in the end. ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥ इहु धनु स्मपै माइआ झूठी अंति छोडि चलिआ पछुताई ॥ Ih ḋʰan sampæ maa▫i▫aa jʰootʰee anṫ chʰod chali▫aa pachʰuṫaa▫ee. This wealth, property and Maya are false. In the end, you must leave these, and depart in sorrow. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ जिस नो किरपा करे गुरु मेले सो हरि हरि नामु समालि ॥ Jis no kirpaa karé gur mélé so har har naam samaal. Those whom the Lord, in His Mercy, unites with the Guru, reflect upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥ कहु नानक तीजै पहरै प्राणी से जाइ मिले हरि नालि ॥३॥ Kaho Naanak ṫeejæ pahræ paraaṇee sé jaa▫é milé har naal. ||3|| Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, O mortal, they go, and are united with the Lord. ||3|| ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਚਲਣ ਵੇਲਾ ਆਦੀ ॥ चउथै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा हरि चलण वेला आदी ॥ Cha▫uṫʰæ pahræ ræṇ kæ vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa har chalaṇ vélaa aaḋee. In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord announces the time of departure. ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਭ ਚਲੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਦੀ ॥ करि सेवहु पूरा सतिगुरू वणजारिआ मित्रा सभ चली रैणि विहादी ॥ Kar sévhu pooraa saṫguroo vaṇjaari▫aa miṫraa sabʰ chalee ræṇ vihaaḋee. Serve the Perfect True Guru, O my merchant friend; your entire life-night is passing away. ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਢਿਲ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਹੋਵਹੁ ॥ हरि सेवहु खिनु खिनु ढिल मूलि न करिहु जितु असथिरु जुगु जुगु होवहु ॥ Har sévhu kʰin kʰin dʰil mool na karihu jiṫ asṫʰir jug jug hovhu. Serve the Lord each and every instant-do not delay! You shall become eternal throughout the ages. ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖਾਂਦੀ ॥ गुर सतिगुर सुआमी भेदु न जाणहु जितु मिलि हरि भगति सुखांदी ॥ Gur saṫgur su▫aamee bʰéḋ na jaaṇhu jiṫ mil har bʰagaṫ sukʰaaⁿḋee. Know that there is no difference between the Guru, the True Guru, and your Lord and Master. Meeting with Him, take pleasure in the Lord’s devotional service. ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਦ ਮਾਣਹੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਖੋਵਹੁ ॥ हरि सेती सद माणहु रलीआ जनम मरण दुख खोवहु ॥ Har séṫee saḋ maaṇhu ralee▫aa janam maraṇ ḋukʰ kʰovhu. Enjoy ecstasy forever with the Lord, and do away with the pains of birth and death. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਸਫਲਿਓੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਦੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥ कहु नानक प्राणी चउथै पहरै सफलिओु रैणि भगता दी ॥४॥१॥३॥ Kaho Naanak paraaṇee cha▫uṫʰæ pahræ safli▫o ræṇ bʰagṫaa ḋee. ||4||1||3|| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the life-night of the devotee is fruitful. ||4||1||3||
