ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਕੋ ਬੇਟਾ ਨੀਕਾ ਸਸੁਰੈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਜਵਾਈ ॥ माइ बाप को बेटा नीका ससुरै चतुरु जवाई ॥ Maa▫é baap ko bétaa neekaa sasuræ chaṫur javaa▫ee. The son is dear to his mother and father; he is the wise son-in-law to his father-in-law. ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਃ ੧ ਚਉਤੁਕੇ ॥ सोरठि मः १ चउतुके ॥ Soratʰ mėhlaa 1 cha▫uṫuké. Sorat’h, First Mehl, Chau-Tukas: ਬਾਲ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਕੌ ਬਾਪੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਕੌ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥ बाल कंनिआ कौ बापु पिआरा भाई कौ अति भाई ॥ Baal kanniaa kou baap pi▫aaraa bʰaa▫ee kou aṫ bʰaa▫ee. The father is dear to his son and daughter, and the brother is very dear to his brother. ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਈ ਪਰਾਈ ॥ हुकमु भइआ बाहरु घरु छोडिआ खिन महि भई पराई ॥ Hukam bʰa▫i▫aa baahar gʰar chʰodi▫aa kʰin mėh bʰa▫ee paraa▫ee. By the Order of the Lord’s Command, he leaves his house and goes outside, and in an instant, everything becomes alien to him. ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਧੂੜਿ ਧੁਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ नामु दानु इसनानु न मनमुखि तितु तनि धूड़ि धुमाई ॥१॥ Naam ḋaan isnaan na manmukʰ ṫiṫ ṫan ḋʰooṛ ḋʰumaa▫ee. ||1|| The self-willed Manmukh does not remember the Name of the Lord, does not give in charity, and does not cleanse his consciousness; his body rolls in the dust. ||1|| ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥ मनु मानिआ नामु सखाई ॥ Man maani▫aa naam sakʰaa▫ee. The mind is comforted by the Comforter of the Naam. ਪਾਇ ਪਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ पाइ परउ गुर कै बलिहारै जिनि साची बूझ बुझाई ॥ रहाउ ॥ Paa▫é para▫o gur kæ balihaaræ jin saachee boojʰ bujʰaa▫ee. Rahaa▫o. I fall at the Guru’s feet - I am a sacrifice to Him; He has given me to understand the true understanding. ||Pause|| ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਝੂਠ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਈ ॥ जग सिउ झूठ प्रीति मनु बेधिआ जन सिउ वादु रचाई ॥ Jag si▫o jʰootʰ pareeṫ man béḋʰi▫aa jan si▫o vaaḋ rachaa▫ee. The mind is impressed with the false love of the world; he quarrels with the Lord’s humble servant. ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ਮਰੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥ माइआ मगनु अहिनिसि मगु जोहै नामु न लेवै मरै बिखु खाई ॥ Maa▫i▫aa magan ahinis mag johæ naam na lévæ maræ bikʰ kʰaa▫ee. Infatuated with Maya, night and day, he sees only the worldly path; he does not chant the Naam, and drinking poison, he dies. ਗੰਧਣ ਵੈਣਿ ਰਤਾ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥ गंधण वैणि रता हितकारी सबदै सुरति न आई ॥ Ganḋʰaṇ væṇ raṫaa hiṫkaaree sabḋæ suraṫ na aa▫ee. He is imbued and infatuated with vicious talk; the Word of the Shabad does not come into his consciousness. ਰੰਗਿ ਨ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨॥ रंगि न राता रसि नही बेधिआ मनमुखि पति गवाई ॥२॥ Rang na raaṫaa ras nahee béḋʰi▫aa manmukʰ paṫ gavaa▫ee. ||2|| He is not imbued with the Lord’s Love, and he is not impressed by the taste of the Name; the self-willed Manmukh loses his honor. ||2|| ਸਾਧ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥ साध सभा महि सहजु न चाखिआ जिहबा रसु नही राई ॥ Saaḋʰ sabʰaa mėh sahj na chaakʰi▫aa jihbaa ras nahee raa▫ee. He does not enjoy celestial peace in the Company of the Holy, and there is not even a bit of sweetness on his tongue. ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਦਰ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ मनु तनु धनु अपुना करि जानिआ दर की खबरि न पाई ॥ Man ṫan ḋʰan apunaa kar jaani▫aa ḋar kee kʰabar na paa▫ee. He calls his mind, body and wealth his own; he has no knowledge of the Court of the Lord. ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ अखी मीटि चलिआ अंधिआरा घरु दरु दिसै न भाई ॥ Akʰee meet chali▫aa anḋʰi▫aaraa gʰar ḋar ḋisæ na bʰaa▫ee. Closing his eyes, he walks in darkness; he cannot see the home of his own being, O Siblings of Destiny. ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੩॥ जम दरि बाधा ठउर न पावै अपुना कीआ कमाई ॥३॥ Jam ḋar baaḋʰaa tʰa▫ur na paavæ apunaa kee▫aa kamaa▫ee. ||3|| Tied up at Death’s door, he finds no place of rest; he receives the rewards of his own actions. ||3|| ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਅਖੀ ਵੇਖਾ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ नदरि करे ता अखी वेखा कहणा कथनु न जाई ॥ Naḋar karé ṫaa akʰee vékʰaa kahṇaa kaṫʰan na jaa▫ee. When the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then I see Him with my own eyes; He is indescribable, and cannot be described. ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ ॥ कंनी सुणि सुणि सबदि सलाही अमृतु रिदै वसाई ॥ Kannee suṇ suṇ sabaḋ salaahee amriṫ riḋæ vasaa▫ee. With my ears, I continually listen to the Word of the Shabad, and I praise Him; His Ambrosial Name abides within my heart. ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ निरभउ निरंकारु निरवैरु पूरन जोति समाई ॥ Nirbʰa▫o nirankaar nirvær pooran joṫ samaa▫ee. He is Fearless, Formless and absolutely without vengeance; I am absorbed in His Perfect Light. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੩॥ नानक गुर विणु भरमु न भागै सचि नामि वडिआई ॥४॥३॥ Naanak gur viṇ bʰaram na bʰaagæ sach naam vadi▫aa▫ee. ||4||3|| O Nanak! Without the Guru, doubt is not dispelled; through the True Name, glorious greatness is obtained. ||4||3||
