ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ आसा आस करे सभु कोई ॥ Āsā ās kare sabẖ ko▫ī. Everyone lives, hoping in hope. ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ आसा महला ३ ॥ Āsā mėhlā 3. Aasaa, Third Mehl: ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ हुकमै बूझै निरासा होई ॥ Hukmai būjẖai nirāsā ho▫ī. Understanding His Command, one becomes free of desire. ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੁਤੇ ਕਈ ਲੋਈ ॥ आसा विचि सुते कई लोई ॥ Āsā vicẖ suṯe ka▫ī lo▫ī. So many are asleep in hope. ਸੋ ਜਾਗੈ ਜਾਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ सो जागै जागावै सोई ॥१॥ So jāgai jāgāvai so▫ī. ||1|| He alone wakes up, whom the Lord awakens. ||1|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ सतिगुरि नामु बुझाइआ विणु नावै भुख न जाई ॥ Saṯgur nām bujẖā▫i▫ā viṇ nāvai bẖukẖ na jā▫ī. The True Guru has led me to understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the Naam, hunger does not go away. ਨਾਮੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ नामे त्रिसना अगनि बुझै नामु मिलै तिसै रजाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Nāme ṯarisnā agan bujẖai nām milai ṯisai rajā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o. Through the Naam, the fire of desire is extinguished; the Naam is obtained by His Will. ||1||Pause|| ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥ कलि कीरति सबदु पछानु ॥ Kal kīraṯ sabaḏ pacẖẖān. In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, realize the Word of the Shabad. ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ एहा भगति चूकै अभिमानु ॥ Ėhā bẖagaṯ cẖūkai abẖimān. By this devotional worship, egotism is eliminated. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥ सतिगुरु सेविऐ होवै परवानु ॥ Saṯgur sevi▫ai hovai parvān. Serving the True Guru, one becomes approved. ਜਿਨਿ ਆਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ जिनि आसा कीती तिस नो जानु ॥२॥ Jin āsā kīṯī ṯis no jān. ||2|| So know the One, who created hope and desire. ||2|| ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ तिसु किआ दीजै जि सबदु सुणाए ॥ Ŧis ki▫ā ḏījai jė sabaḏ suṇā▫e. What shall we offer to one who proclaims the Word of the Shabad? ਇਹੁ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ इहु सिरु दीजै आपु गवाए ॥ Ih sir ḏījai āp gavā▫e. Offer your head, and shed your self-conceit. ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥ हुकमै बूझे सदा सुखु पाए ॥३॥ Hukmai būjẖe saḏā sukẖ pā▫e. ||3|| One who understands the Lord's Command finds lasting peace. ||3|| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ करि किरपा नामु मंनि वसाए ॥ Kar kirpā nām man vasā▫e. By His Grace, the Naam is enshrined within our minds. ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ आपि करे तै आपि कराए ॥ Āp kare ṯai āp karā▫e. He Himself does, and causes others to do. ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ आपे गुरमुखि नामु वसाए ॥ Āpe gurmukẖ nām vasā▫e. He Himself enshrines His Name in the mind of the Gurmukh. ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ आपि भुलावै आपि मारगि पाए ॥ Āp bẖulāvai āp mārag pā▫e. He Himself misleads us, and He Himself puts us back on the Path. ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੪॥ सचै सबदि सचि समाए ॥४॥ Sacẖai sabaḏ sacẖ samā▫e. ||4|| Through the True Word of the Shabad, we merge into the True Lord. ||4|| ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ सचा सबदु सची है बाणी ॥ Sacẖā sabaḏ sacẖī hai baṇī. True is the Shabad, and True is the Word of the Lord's Bani. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥ गुरमुखि जुगि जुगि आखि वखाणी ॥ Gurmukẖ jug jug ākẖ vakẖāṇī. In each and every age, the Gurmukhs speak it and chant it. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੋਲਾਣੀ ॥ मनमुखि मोहि भरमि भोलाणी ॥ Manmukẖ mohi bẖaram bẖolāṇī. The self-willed manmukhs are deluded by doubt and attachment. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਉਰਾਣੀ ॥੫॥ बिनु नावै सभ फिरै बउराणी ॥५॥ Bin nāvai sabẖ firai ba▫urāṇī. ||5|| Without the Name, everyone wanders around insane. ||5|| ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ तीनि भवन महि एका माइआ ॥ Ŧīn bẖavan mėh ekā mā▫i▫ā. Throughout the three worlds, is the one Maya. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥ सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु पाइआ ॥६॥ Saṯgur sev saḏā sukẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||6|| Serving the True Guru, eternal peace is obtained. ||6|| ਮੂਰਖਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥ मूरखि पड़ि पड़ि दूजा भाउ द्रिड़ाइआ ॥ Mūrakẖ paṛ paṛ ḏūjā bẖā▫o driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā. The fool reads and reads, but holds tight to duality. ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ बहु करम कमावै दुखु सबाइआ ॥ Baho karam kamāvai ḏukẖ sabā▫i▫ā. He performs all sorts of rituals, but still suffers terrible pain. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ अम्रितु मीठा सबदु वीचारि ॥ Amriṯ mīṯẖā sabaḏ vīcẖār. Reflective meditation upon the Shabad is such sweet nectar. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ अनदिनु भोगे हउमै मारि ॥ An▫ḏin bẖoge ha▫umai mār. Night and day, one enjoys it, subduing his ego. ਸਹਜਿ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ सहजि अनंदि किरपा धारि ॥ Sahj anand kirpā ḏẖār. When the Lord showers His Mercy, we enjoy celestial bliss. ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੭॥ नामि रते सदा सचि पिआरि ॥७॥ Nām raṯe saḏā sacẖ pi▫ār. ||7|| Imbued with the Naam, love the True Lord forever. ||7|| ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ हरि जपि पड़ीऐ गुर सबदु वीचारि ॥ Har jap paṛī▫ai gur sabaḏ vīcẖār. Meditate on the Lord, and read and reflect upon the Guru's Shabad. ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ हरि जपि पड़ीऐ हउमै मारि ॥ Har jap paṛī▫ai ha▫umai mār. Subdue your ego and meditate on the Lord. ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਭਇ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ हरि जपीऐ भइ सचि पिआरि ॥ Har japī▫ai bẖa▫e sacẖ pi▫ār. Meditate on the Lord, and be imbued with fear and love of the True One. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥੨੫॥ नानक नामु गुरमति उर धारि ॥८॥३॥२५॥ Nānak nām gurmaṯ ur ḏẖār. ||8||3||25|| O Nanak, enshrine the Naam within your heart, through the Guru's Teachings. ||8||3||25||
