ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੀਤੇ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥ गावहि गीते चीति अनीते ॥ Gāvahi gīṯe cẖīṯ anīṯe. They sing religious songs, but their consciousness is wicked. ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ आसा महला १ ॥ Āsā mėhlā 1. Aasaa, First Mehl: ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥੧॥ बिनु नावै मनि झूठु अनीते ॥१॥ Bin nāvai man jẖūṯẖ anīṯe. ||1|| but without the Name, their minds are false and wicked. ||1|| ਕਹਾ ਚਲਹੁ ਮਨ ਰਹਹੁ ਘਰੇ ॥ कहा चलहु मन रहहु घरे ॥ Kahā cẖalhu man rahhu gẖare. Where are you going? O mind, remain in your own home. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ਖੋਜਤ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ गुरमुखि राम नामि त्रिपतासे खोजत पावहु सहजि हरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Gurmukẖ rām nām ṯaripṯāse kẖojaṯ pāvhu sahj hare. ||1|| rahā▫o. The Gurmukhs are satisfied with the Lord's Name; searching, they easily find the Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਬੀਤੇ ॥ राग सुणाइ कहावहि बीते ॥ Rāg suṇā▫e kahāvėh bīṯe. They sing the songs, and call themselves divine, ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ कामु क्रोधु मनि मोहु सरीरा ॥ Kām kroḏẖ man moh sarīrā. Sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment fill the mind and body; ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਪੀਰਾ ॥ लबु लोभु अहंकारु सु पीरा ॥ Lab lobẖ ahaʼnkār so pīrā. greed and egotism lead only to pain. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੨॥ राम नाम बिनु किउ मनु धीरा ॥२॥ Rām nām bin ki▫o man ḏẖīrā. ||2|| How can the mind be comforted without the Lord's Name? ||2|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ अंतरि नावणु साचु पछाणै ॥ Anṯar nāvaṇ sācẖ pacẖẖāṇai. One who cleanses himself within, knows the True Lord. ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ अंतर की गति गुरमुखि जाणै ॥ Anṯar kī gaṯ gurmukẖ jāṇai. The Gurmukh knows the condition of his innermost being. ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥ साच सबद बिनु महलु न पछाणै ॥३॥ Sācẖ sabaḏ bin mahal na pacẖẖāṇai. ||3|| Without the True Word of the Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not realized. ||3|| ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ निरंकार महि आकारु समावै ॥ Nirankār mėh ākār samāvai. One who merges his form into the Formless Lord, ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਟਿਕਾਵੈ ॥ अकल कला सचु साचि टिकावै ॥ Akal kalā sacẖ sācẖ tikāvai. abides in the True Lord, the Powerful, beyond power. ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥ सो नरु गरभ जोनि नही आवै ॥४॥ So nar garabẖ jon nahī āvai. ||4|| Such a person does not enter into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4|| ਜਹਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥ जहां नामु मिलै तह जाउ ॥ Jahāʼn nām milai ṯah jā▫o. Go there, where you may obtain the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ अम्रित नामु वसिआ सुखदाता ॥ Amriṯ nām vasi▫ā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa. The Ambrosial Naam, the Giver of Peace, abides within my mind. ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ गुर सेवा ते आपु पछाता ॥ Gur sevā ṯe āp pacẖẖāṯā. Serving the Guru, I have come to understand myself. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥ गुर परसादी करम कमाउ ॥ Gur parsādī karam kamā▫o. By Guru's Grace, perform good deeds. ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥ नामे राता हरि गुण गाउ ॥५॥ Nāme rāṯā har guṇ gā▫o. ||5|| Imbued with the Naam, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥ अनदिनु बाणी नामे राता ॥६॥ An▫ḏin baṇī nāme rāṯā. ||6|| Night and day, I am imbued with the Word of the Guru's Bani, and the Naam. ||6|| ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ मेरा प्रभु लाए ता को लागै ॥ Merā parabẖ lā▫e ṯā ko lāgai. When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached. ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥ हउमै मारे सबदे जागै ॥ Ha▫umai māre sabḏe jāgai. Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad. ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥ ऐथै ओथै सदा सुखु आगै ॥७॥ Aithai othai saḏā sukẖ āgai. ||7|| Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7|| ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ मनु चंचलु बिधि नाही जाणै ॥ Man cẖancẖal biḏẖ nāhī jāṇai. The fickle mind does not know the way. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ मनमुखि मैला सबदु न पछाणै ॥ Manmukẖ mailā sabaḏ na pacẖẖāṇai. The filthy self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad. ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ हरि जीउ आगै करी अरदासि ॥ Har jī▫o āgai karī arḏās. I offer my prayer to the Lord, ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ साधू जन संगति होइ निवासु ॥ Sāḏẖū jan sangaṯ ho▫e nivās. that I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥ गुरमुखि निरमलु नामु वखाणै ॥८॥ Gurmukẖ nirmal nām vakẖāṇai. ||8|| The Gurmukh chants the Immaculate Naam. ||8|| ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥ किलविख दुख काटे हरि नामु प्रगासु ॥९॥ Kilvikẖ ḏukẖ kāte har nām pargās. ||9|| There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord's Name. ||9|| ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥ करि बीचारु आचारु पराता ॥ Kar bīcẖār ācẖār parāṯā. In reflective meditation, I have come to love good conduct. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ सतिगुर बचनी एको जाता ॥ Saṯgur bacẖnī eko jāṯā. Through the Word of the True Guru, I recognize the One Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥ नानक राम नामि मनु राता ॥१०॥७॥ Nānak rām nām man rāṯā. ||10||7|| O Nanak, my mind is imbued with the Lord's Name. ||10||7||
