ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥ आपु वीचारै सु परखे हीरा ॥ Āp vīcẖārai so parkẖe hīrā. One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel. ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ रागु आसा महला १ ॥ Rāg āsā mėhlā 1. Aasaa, First Mehl: ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ एक द्रिसटि तारे गुर पूरा ॥ Ėk ḏarisat ṯāre gur pūrā. With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him. ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ गुरु मानै मन ते मनु धीरा ॥१॥ Gur mānai man ṯe man ḏẖīrā. ||1|| When the Guru is pleased, one's mind comforts itself. ||1|| ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ साची नदरि एक लिव तरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Sācẖī naḏar ek liv ṯarai. ||1|| rahā▫o. By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1||Pause|| ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥ ऐसा साहु सराफी करै ॥ Aisā sāhu sarāfī karai. He is such a banker, who tests us. ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ पूंजी नामु निरंजन सारु ॥ Pūnjī nām niranjan sār. The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime. ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ निरमलु साचि रता पैकारु ॥ Nirmal sācẖ raṯā paikār. That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth. ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ सिफति सहज घरि गुरु करतारु ॥२॥ Sifaṯ sahj gẖar gur karṯār. ||2|| Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2|| ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ आसा मनसा सबदि जलाए ॥ Āsā mansā sabaḏ jalā▫e. One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad, ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥ राम नराइणु कहै कहाए ॥ Rām narā▫iṇ kahai kahā▫e. chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well. ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥ गुर ते वाट महलु घरु पाए ॥३॥ Gur ṯe vāt mahal gẖar pā▫e. ||3|| Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3|| ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥ कंचन काइआ जोति अनूपु ॥ Kancẖan kā▫i▫ā joṯ anūp. His body becomes golden, by the Lord's Incomparable Light. ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ त्रिभवण देवा सगल सरूपु ॥ Ŧaribẖavaṇ ḏevā sagal sarūp. He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds. ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥ मै सो धनु पलै साचु अखूटु ॥४॥ Mai so ḏẖan palai sācẖ akẖūt. ||4|| That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4|| ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ पंच तीनि नव चारि समावै ॥ Pancẖ ṯīn nav cẖār samāvai. In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading. ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥ धरणि गगनु कल धारि रहावै ॥ Ḏẖaraṇ gagan kal ḏẖār rahāvai. He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power. ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ बाहरि जातउ उलटि परावै ॥५॥ Bāhar jāṯa▫o ulat parāvai. ||5|| He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5|| ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ ऊतम संगति ऊतमु होवै ॥ Ūṯam sangaṯ ūṯam hovai. In the uplifting society, one is uplifted. ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ जिहवा रसु नही कहिआ बूझै ॥ Jihvā ras nahī kahi▫ā būjẖai. He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said. ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥ बिखु का माता जग सिउ लूझै ॥६॥ Bikẖ kā māṯā jag si▫o lūjẖai. ||6|| Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6|| ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ मूरखु होइ न आखी सूझै ॥ Mūrakẖ ho▫e na ākẖī sūjẖai. The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes. ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ गुण कउ धावै अवगण धोवै ॥ Guṇ ka▫o ḏẖāvai avgaṇ ḏẖovai. He chases after virtue and washes off his sins. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥ बिनु गुर सेवे सहजु न होवै ॥७॥ Bin gur seve sahj na hovai. ||7|| Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7|| ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥ हीरा नामु जवेहर लालु ॥ Hīrā nām javehar lāl. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby. ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥ मनु मोती है तिस का मालु ॥ Man moṯī hai ṯis kā māl. The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth. ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥ नानक परखै नदरि निहालु ॥८॥५॥ Nānak parkẖai naḏar nihāl. ||8||5|| O Nanak, the Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||
