ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥ आपु वीचारै सु परखे हीरा ॥ Aap veechaaræ so parkʰé heeraa. One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel. ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ रागु आसा महला १ ॥ Raag aasaa mėhlaa 1. Aasaa, First Mehl: ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ एक द्रिसटि तारे गुर पूरा ॥ Ék ḋarisat ṫaaré gur pooraa. With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him. ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ गुरु मानै मन ते मनु धीरा ॥१॥ Gur maanæ man ṫé man ḋʰeeraa. ||1|| When the Guru is pleased, one’s mind comforts itself. ||1|| ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ साची नदरि एक लिव तरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Saachee naḋar ék liv ṫaræ. ||1|| rahaa▫o. By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1||Pause|| ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥ ऐसा साहु सराफी करै ॥ Æsaa saahu saraafee karæ. He is such a banker, who tests us. ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ पूंजी नामु निरंजन सारु ॥ Poonjee naam niranjan saar. The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime. ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ निरमलु साचि रता पैकारु ॥ Nirmal saach raṫaa pækaar. That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth. ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ सिफति सहज घरि गुरु करतारु ॥२॥ Sifaṫ sahj gʰar gur karṫaar. ||2|| Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2|| ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ आसा मनसा सबदि जलाए ॥ Aasaa mansaa sabaḋ jalaa▫é. One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad, ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥ राम नराइणु कहै कहाए ॥ Raam naraa▫iṇ kahæ kahaa▫é. chants the Lord’s Name, and inspires others to chant it as well. ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥ गुर ते वाट महलु घरु पाए ॥३॥ Gur ṫé vaat mahal gʰar paa▫é. ||3|| Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. ||3|| ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥ कंचन काइआ जोति अनूपु ॥ Kanchan kaa▫i▫aa joṫ anoop. His body becomes golden, by the Lord’s Incomparable Light. ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ त्रिभवण देवा सगल सरूपु ॥ Ṫaribʰavaṇ ḋévaa sagal saroop. He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds. ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥ मै सो धनु पलै साचु अखूटु ॥४॥ Mæ so ḋʰan palæ saach akʰoot. ||4|| That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4|| ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ पंच तीनि नव चारि समावै ॥ Panch ṫeen nav chaar samaavæ. In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading. ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥ धरणि गगनु कल धारि रहावै ॥ Ḋʰaraṇ gagan kal ḋʰaar rahaavæ. He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power. ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ बाहरि जातउ उलटि परावै ॥५॥ Baahar jaaṫa▫o ulat paraavæ. ||5|| He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5|| ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ ऊतम संगति ऊतमु होवै ॥ Ooṫam sangaṫ ooṫam hovæ. In the uplifting society, one is uplifted. ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ जिहवा रसु नही कहिआ बूझै ॥ Jihvaa ras nahee kahi▫aa boojʰæ. He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said. ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥ बिखु का माता जग सिउ लूझै ॥६॥ Bikʰ kaa maaṫaa jag si▫o loojʰæ. ||6|| Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6|| ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ मूरखु होइ न आखी सूझै ॥ Moorakʰ ho▫é na aakʰee soojʰæ. The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes. ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ गुण कउ धावै अवगण धोवै ॥ Guṇ ka▫o ḋʰaavæ avgaṇ ḋʰovæ. He chases after virtue and washes off his sins. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥ बिनु गुर सेवे सहजु न होवै ॥७॥ Bin gur sévé sahj na hovæ. ||7|| Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7|| ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥ हीरा नामु जवेहर लालु ॥ Heeraa naam javéhar laal. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby. ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥ मनु मोती है तिस का मालु ॥ Man moṫee hæ ṫis kaa maal. The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth. ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥ नानक परखै नदरि निहालु ॥८॥५॥ Naanak parkʰæ naḋar nihaal. ||8||5|| O Nanak! The Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||
