ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ लेख असंख लिखि लिखि मानु ॥ Lekẖ asaʼnkẖ likẖ likẖ mān. There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them. ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥ मनि मानिऐ सचु सुरति वखानु ॥ Man mānī▫ai sacẖ suraṯ vakẖān. When one's mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it. ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ आसा महला १ ॥ Āsā mėhlā 1. Aasaa, First Mehl: ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥ कथनी बदनी पड़ि पड़ि भारु ॥ Kathnī baḏnī paṛ paṛ bẖār. Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads. ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ लेख असंख अलेखु अपारु ॥१॥ Lekẖ asaʼnkẖ alekẖ apār. ||1|| There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1|| ਐਸਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ ऐसा साचा तूं एको जाणु ॥ Aisā sācẖā ṯūʼn eko jāṇ. Know that such a True Lord is the One and only. ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जमणु मरणा हुकमु पछाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jamaṇ marṇā hukam pacẖẖāṇ. ||1|| rahā▫o. Understand that birth and death come according to the Lord's Will. ||1||Pause|| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥ माइआ मोहि जगु बाधा जमकालि ॥ Mā▫i▫ā mohi jag bāḏẖā jamkāl. Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death. ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥ बांधा छूटै नामु सम्हालि ॥ Bāʼnḏẖā cẖẖūtai nām samĥāl. These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ सबदि मरै तां एक लिव लाए ॥ Sabaḏ marai ṯāʼn ek liv lā▫e. One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, embraces love for the One Lord. ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥ हलति पलति निबही तुधु नालि ॥२॥ Halaṯ palaṯ nibhī ṯuḏẖ nāl. ||2|| In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2|| ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥ गुरु सुखदाता अवरु न भालि ॥ Gur sukẖ▫ḏāṯa avar na bẖāl. The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other. ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ अचरु चरै तां भरमु चुकाए ॥ Acẖar cẖarai ṯāʼn bẖaram cẖukā▫e. One who mends the difficult mind, has his doubts dispelled. ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ जीवन मुकतु मनि नामु वसाए ॥ Jīvan mukaṯ man nām vasā▫e. He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive; the Naam abides in his mind. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥ गुरमुखि होइ त सचि समाए ॥३॥ Gurmukẖ ho▫e ṯa sacẖ samā▫e. ||3|| Becoming Gurmukh, he merges into the True Lord. ||3|| ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਸਾਜੀ ਗਗਨੁ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥ जिनि धर साजी गगनु अकासु ॥ Jin ḏẖar sājī gagan akās. The One who created the earth and the Akaashic ethers of the sky, ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਥਾਪੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥ जिनि सभ थापी थापि उथापि ॥ Jin sabẖ thāpī thāp uthāp. established all; He establishes and disestablishes. ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥ सरब निरंतरि आपे आपि ॥ Sarab niranṯar āpe āp. He Himself is permeating all. ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਪੂਛੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥ किसै न पूछे बखसे आपि ॥४॥ Kisai na pūcẖẖe bakẖse āp. ||4|| He does not consult anyone; He Himself forgives. ||4|| ਤੂ ਪੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰੁ ॥ तू पुरु सागरु माणक हीरु ॥ Ŧū pur sāgar māṇak hīr. You are the Ocean, over-flowing with jewels and rubies. ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥ तू निरमलु सचु गुणी गहीरु ॥ Ŧū nirmal sacẖ guṇī gahīr. You are immaculate and pure, the true treasure of virtue. ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੁ ॥ सुखु मानै भेटै गुर पीरु ॥ Sukẖ mānai bẖetai gur pīr. Peace is enjoyed, meeting the Guru, the Spiritual Teacher. ਜਗਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਚਾਰੀ ॥ जगि गिआनी विरला आचारी ॥ Jag gi▫ānī virlā ācẖārī. How rare in the world is that wise person, who practices this. ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਵਜੀਰੁ ॥੫॥ एको साहिबु एकु वजीरु ॥५॥ Ėko sāhib ek vajīr. ||5|| The Lord is the only Master; He is the only Minister. ||5|| ਜਗੁ ਬੰਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਹਉ ਮਾਰੀ ॥ जगु बंदी मुकते हउ मारी ॥ Jag banḏī mukṯe ha▫o mārī. The world is held in bondage; he alone is emancipated, who conquers his ego. ਜਗਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ जगि पंडितु विरला वीचारी ॥ Jag pandiṯ virlā vīcẖārī. How rare in this world is that scholar who reflects upon this. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ बिनु सतिगुरु भेटे सभ फिरै अहंकारी ॥६॥ Bin saṯgur bẖete sabẖ firai ahaʼnkārī. ||6|| Without meeting the True Guru, all wander in ego. ||6|| ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ जगु दुखीआ सुखीआ जनु कोइ ॥ Jag ḏukẖī▫ā sukẖī▫ā jan ko▫e. The world is unhappy; only a few are happy. ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਇ ॥ जगु रोगी भोगी गुण रोइ ॥ Jag rogī bẖogī guṇ ro▫e. The world is diseased, from its indulgences; it weeps over its lost virtue. ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥ जगु उपजै बिनसै पति खोइ ॥ Jag upjai binsai paṯ kẖo▫e. The world wells up, and then subsides, losing its honor. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥ गुरमुखि होवै बूझै सोइ ॥७॥ Gurmukẖ hovai būjẖai so▫e. ||7|| He alone, who becomes Gurmukh, understands. ||7|| ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਭਇਕਾਰੁ ॥ भाइ मिलै भावै भइकारु ॥ Bẖā▫e milai bẖāvai bẖa▫ikār. Meet Him through love, become pleasing to Him, and act in fear of Him. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੩॥ नानकु नीचु कहै बीचारु ॥८॥३॥ Nānak nīcẖ kahai bīcẖār. ||8||3|| Nanak the lowly says this, after deep contemplation. ||8||3|| ਅਟਲ ਅਛਲੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਧਾਰੁ ॥ अटल अछलु गुरमती धारु ॥ Atal acẖẖal gurmaṯī ḏẖār. He is immovable and undeceivable; enshrine Him in your mind, through the Guru's Teachings. ਮਹਘੋ ਮੋਲਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥ महघो मोलि भारि अफारु ॥ Mahgẖo mol bẖār afār. His price is so costly; His weight is unbearable.
