ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥ Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ. One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੨ रागु आसा महला १ असटपदीआ घरु २ Rāg āsā mėhlā 1 asatpaḏī▫ā gẖar 2 Raag Aasaa, First Mehl, Ashtapadees, Second House: ਉਤਰਿ ਅਵਘਟਿ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਵੈ ॥ उतरि अवघटि सरवरि न्हावै ॥ Uṯar avgẖat sarvar nĥāvai. He descends the treacherous precipice, to bathe in the cleansing pool; ਬਕੈ ਨ ਬੋਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ बकै न बोलै हरि गुण गावै ॥ Bakai na bolai har guṇ gāvai. without speaking or saying anything, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ਜਲੁ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ जलु आकासी सुंनि समावै ॥ Jal ākāsī sunn samāvai. Like water vapor in the sky, he remains absorbed in the Lord. ਰਸੁ ਸਤੁ ਝੋਲਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ रसु सतु झोलि महा रसु पावै ॥१॥ Ras saṯ jẖol mahā ras pāvai. ||1|| He churns the true pleasures to obtain the supreme nectar. ||1|| ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਅਭ ਮੋਰੇ ॥ ऐसा गिआनु सुनहु अभ मोरे ॥ Aisā gi▫ān sunhu abẖ more. Listen to such spiritual wisdom, O my mind. ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਉਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ भरिपुरि धारि रहिआ सभ ठउरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bẖaripur ḏẖār rahi▫ā sabẖ ṯẖa▫ure. ||1|| rahā▫o. The Lord is totally pervading and permeating all places. ||1||Pause|| ਸਚੁ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਨੇਮੁ ਨ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥ सचु ब्रतु नेमु न कालु संतावै ॥ Sacẖ baraṯ nem na kāl sanṯāvai. One who makes Truthfulness his fast and religious vows, does not suffer the pain of death. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥ सतिगुर सबदि करोधु जलावै ॥ Saṯgur sabaḏ karoḏẖ jalāvai. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he burns away his anger. ਗਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥ गगनि निवासि समाधि लगावै ॥ Gagan nivās samāḏẖ lagāvai. He dwells in the Tenth Gate, immersed in the Samaadhi of deep meditation. ਸੁਭਰ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ सुभर सरवरि मैलु न धोवै ॥ Subẖar sarvar mail na ḏẖovai. bathing in the over-flowing tank of nectar, filth is washed away. ਸਚੁ ਮਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ॥ सचु मन कारणि ततु बिलोवै ॥ Sacẖ man kāraṇ ṯaṯ bilovai. For the benefit of the mind, churn the true essence of reality; ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ पारसु परसि परम पदु पावै ॥२॥ Pāras paras param paḏ pāvai. ||2|| Touching the philosopher's stone, he obtains the supreme status. ||2|| ਜੈ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤਾ ਤੈਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ जै सिउ राता तैसो होवै ॥ Jai si▫o rāṯā ṯaiso hovai. We become like the One with whom we are imbued. ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੩॥ आपे करता करे सु होवै ॥३॥ Āpe karṯā kare so hovai. ||3|| Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||3|| ਗੁਰ ਹਿਵ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥ गुर हिव सीतलु अगनि बुझावै ॥ Gur hiv sīṯal agan bujẖāvai. The Guru is cool and soothing like ice; He puts out the fire of the mind. ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਵੈ ॥ सेवा सुरति बिभूत चड़ावै ॥ Sevā suraṯ bibẖūṯ cẖaṛāvai. Smear your body with the ashes of dedicated service, ਦਰਸਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ दरसनु आपि सहज घरि आवै ॥ Ḏarsan āp sahj gẖar āvai. and live in the home of peace - make this your religious order. ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ निरमल बाणी नादु वजावै ॥४॥ Nirmal baṇī nāḏ vajāvai. ||4|| Let the Immaculate Bani of the Word be your playing of the flute. ||4|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥ अंतरि गिआनु महा रसु सारा ॥ Anṯar gi▫ān mahā ras sārā. Spiritual wisdom within is the supreme, sublime nectar. ਤੀਰਥ ਮਜਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ तीरथ मजनु गुर वीचारा ॥ Ŧirath majan gur vīcẖārā. Contemplation of the Guru is one's bathing at holy places of pilgrimage. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਾ ॥ अंतरि पूजा थानु मुरारा ॥ Anṯar pūjā thān murārā. Worship and adoration within is the Lord's dwelling. ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੫॥ जोती जोति मिलावणहारा ॥५॥ Joṯī joṯ milāvaṇhārā. ||5|| He is the One who blends one's light with the Divine Light. ||5|| ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਮਤਿ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ रसि रसिआ मति एकै भाइ ॥ Ras rasi▫ā maṯ ekai bẖā▫e. He delights in the delightful wisdom of loving the One Lord. ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਖਸਮ ਰਜਾਇ ॥ कार कमाई खसम रजाइ ॥ Kār kamā▫ī kẖasam rajā▫e. He performs his works in obedience to the Will of his Lord and Master. ਤਖਤ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ तखत निवासी पंच समाइ ॥ Ŧakẖaṯ nivāsī pancẖ samā▫e. He is one of the self-elect - he merges with the Lord, who occupies the throne. ਅਵਿਗਤ ਨਾਥੁ ਨ ਲਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥ अविगत नाथु न लखिआ जाइ ॥६॥ Avigaṯ nāth na lakẖi▫ā jā▫e. ||6|| The Unknowable Lord cannot be understood. ||6|| ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ जल महि उपजै जल ते दूरि ॥ Jal mėh upjai jal ṯe ḏūr. The lotus originates in the water, and yet it remains distinct from the water. ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ जल महि जोति रहिआ भरपूरि ॥ Jal mėh joṯ rahi▫ā bẖarpūr. Just so, the Divine Light pervades and permeates the water of the world. ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ किसु नेड़ै किसु आखा दूरि ॥ Kis neṛai kis ākẖā ḏūr. Who is near, and who is far away? ਨਿਧਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੭॥ निधि गुण गावा देखि हदूरि ॥७॥ Niḏẖ guṇ gāvā ḏekẖ haḏūr. ||7|| I sing the Glories of the Lord, the treasure of virtue; I behold Him ever-present. ||7|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि अवरु न कोइ ॥ Anṯar bāhar avar na ko▫e. Inwardly and outwardly, there is none other than Him. ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ जो तिसु भावै सो फुनि होइ ॥ Jo ṯis bẖāvai so fun ho▫e. Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass. ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ सुणि भरथरि नानकु कहै बीचारु ॥ Suṇ bẖarthar Nānak kahai bīcẖār. Listen, O Bharthari Yogi - Nanak speaks after deliberation; ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥ निरमल नामु मेरा आधारु ॥८॥१॥ Nirmal nām merā āḏẖār. ||8||1|| the Immaculate Name is my only Support. ||8||1|| ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ सभि जप सभि तप सभ चतुराई ॥ Sabẖ jap sabẖ ṯap sabẖ cẖaṯurā▫ī. All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks, ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ बिनु बूझे को थाइ न पाई ॥ Bin būjẖe ko thā▫e na pā▫ī. Without understanding, he is not approved; ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ ऊझड़ि भरमै राहि न पाई ॥ Ūjẖaṛ bẖarmai rāhi na pā▫ī. lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.
