Asatpaḏī.
Ashtapadee:

ਜਬ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਛੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ
जब अकारु इहु कछु न द्रिसटेता ॥
Jab akār ih kacẖẖ na ḏaristeṯā.
When this world had not yet appeared in any form,

ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਬ ਕਹ ਤੇ ਹੋਤਾ
पाप पुंन तब कह ते होता ॥
Pāp punn ṯab kah ṯe hoṯā.
who then committed sins and performed good deeds?

ਜਬ ਧਾਰੀ ਆਪਨ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ
जब धारी आपन सुंन समाधि ॥
Jab ḏẖārī āpan sunn samāḏẖ.
When the Lord Himself was in Profound Samaadhi,

ਤਬ ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਕਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਮਾਤਿ
तब बैर बिरोध किसु संगि कमाति ॥
Ŧab bair biroḏẖ kis sang kamāṯ.
then against whom were hate and jealousy directed?

ਜਬ ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਜਾਪਤ
जब इस का बरनु चिहनु न जापत ॥
Jab is kā baran cẖihan na jāpaṯ.
When there was no color or shape to be seen,

ਤਬ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ
तब हरख सोग कहु किसहि बिआपत ॥
Ŧab harakẖ sog kaho kisėh bi▫āpaṯ.
then who experienced joy and sorrow?

ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ
जब आपन आप आपि पारब्रहम ॥
Jab āpan āp āp pārbarahm.
When the Supreme Lord Himself was Himself All-in-all,

ਤਬ ਮੋਹ ਕਹਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਵਤ ਭਰਮ
तब मोह कहा किसु होवत भरम ॥
Ŧab moh kahā kis hovaṯ bẖaram.
then where was emotional attachment, and who had doubts?

ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੀਜਾ
आपन खेलु आपि वरतीजा ॥
Āpan kẖel āp varṯījā.
He Himself has staged His own drama;

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥
नानक करनैहारु न दूजा ॥१॥
Nānak karnaihār na ḏūjā. ||1||
O Nanak, there is no other Creator. ||1||

ਜਬ ਹੋਵਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਵਲ ਧਨੀ
जब होवत प्रभ केवल धनी ॥
Jab hovaṯ parabẖ keval ḏẖanī.
When there was only God the Master,

ਤਬ ਬੰਧ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਗਨੀ
तब बंध मुकति कहु किस कउ गनी ॥
Ŧab banḏẖ mukaṯ kaho kis ka▫o ganī.
then who was called bound or liberated?

ਜਬ ਏਕਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ
जब एकहि हरि अगम अपार ॥
Jab ekėh har agam apār.
When there was only the Lord, Unfathomable and Infinite,

ਤਬ ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਉਨ ਅਉਤਾਰ
तब नरक सुरग कहु कउन अउतार ॥
Ŧab narak surag kaho ka▫un a▫uṯār.
then who entered hell, and who entered heaven?

ਜਬ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ
जब निरगुन प्रभ सहज सुभाइ ॥
Jab nirgun parabẖ sahj subẖā▫e.
When God was without attributes, in absolute poise,

ਤਬ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤਿ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਠਾਇ
तब सिव सकति कहहु कितु ठाइ ॥
Ŧab siv sakaṯ kahhu kiṯ ṯẖā▫e.
then where was mind and where was matter - where was Shiva and Shakti?

ਜਬ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੈ
जब आपहि आपि अपनी जोति धरै ॥
Jab āpėh āp apnī joṯ ḏẖarai.
When He held His Own Light unto Himself,

ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਨਿਡਰੁ ਕਵਨ ਕਤ ਡਰੈ
तब कवन निडरु कवन कत डरै ॥
Ŧab kavan nidar kavan kaṯ darai.
then who was fearless, and who was afraid?

ਆਪਨ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ
आपन चलित आपि करनैहार ॥
Āpan cẖaliṯ āp karnaihār.
He Himself is the Performer in His own plays;

ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੨॥
नानक ठाकुर अगम अपार ॥२॥
Nānak ṯẖākur agam apār. ||2||
O Nanak, the Lord Master is Unfathomable and Infinite. ||2||

ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸੁਖ ਆਪਨ ਆਸਨ
अबिनासी सुख आपन आसन ॥
Abẖināsī sukẖ āpan āsan.
When the Immortal Lord was seated at ease,

ਤਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ
तह जनम मरन कहु कहा बिनासन ॥
Ŧah janam maran kaho kahā bināsan.
then where was birth, death and dissolution?

ਜਬ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ
जब पूरन करता प्रभु सोइ ॥
Jab pūran karṯā parabẖ so▫e.
When there was only God, the Perfect Creator,

ਤਬ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ
तब जम की त्रास कहहु किसु होइ ॥
Ŧab jam kī ṯarās kahhu kis ho▫e.
then who was afraid of death?

ਜਬ ਅਬਿਗਤ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕਾ
जब अबिगत अगोचर प्रभ एका ॥
Jab abigaṯ agocẖar parabẖ ekā.
When there was only the One Lord, unmanifest and incomprehensible,

ਤਬ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਛਤ ਲੇਖਾ
तब चित्र गुपत किसु पूछत लेखा ॥
Ŧab cẖiṯar gupaṯ kis pūcẖẖaṯ lekẖā.
then who was called to account by the recording scribes of the conscious and the subconscious?

ਜਬ ਨਾਥ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਅਗਾਧੇ
जब नाथ निरंजन अगोचर अगाधे ॥
Jab nāth niranjan agocẖar agāḏẖe.
When there was only the Immaculate, Incomprehensible, Unfathomable Master,

ਤਬ ਕਉਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਕਉਨ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਾਧੇ
तब कउन छुटे कउन बंधन बाधे ॥
Ŧab ka▫un cẖẖute ka▫un banḏẖan bāḏẖe.
then who was emancipated, and who was held in bondage?

ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਚਰਜਾ
आपन आप आप ही अचरजा ॥
Āpan āp āp hī acẖarjā.
He Himself, in and of Himself, is the most wonderful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਰੂਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਜਾ ॥੩॥
नानक आपन रूप आप ही उपरजा ॥३॥
Nānak āpan rūp āp hī uparjā. ||3||
O Nanak, He Himself created His Own Form. ||3||

ਜਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਤਾ
जह निरमल पुरखु पुरख पति होता ॥
Jah nirmal purakẖ purakẖ paṯ hoṯā.
When there was only the Immaculate Being, the Lord of beings,

ਤਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਧੋਤਾ
तह बिनु मैलु कहहु किआ धोता ॥
Ŧah bin mail kahhu ki▫ā ḏẖoṯā.
there was no filth, so what was there to be washed clean?

ਜਹ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨਿਰਬਾਨ
जह निरंजन निरंकार निरबान ॥
Jah niranjan nirankār nirbān.
When there was only the Pure, Formless Lord in Nirvaanaa,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਕਉ ਮਾਨ ਕਉਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ
तह कउन कउ मान कउन अभिमान ॥
Ŧah ka▫un ka▫o mān ka▫un abẖimān.
then who was honored, and who was dishonored?

ਜਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਦੀਸ
जह सरूप केवल जगदीस ॥
Jah sarūp keval jagḏīs.
When there was only the Form of the Lord of the Universe,

ਤਹ ਛਲ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਲਗਤ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਸ
तह छल छिद्र लगत कहु कीस ॥
Ŧah cẖẖal cẖẖiḏar lagaṯ kaho kīs.
then who was tainted by fraud and sin?

ਜਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ
जह जोति सरूपी जोति संगि समावै ॥
Jah joṯ sarūpī joṯ sang samāvai.
When the Embodiment of Light was immersed in His Own Light,

ਤਹ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਕਵਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ
तह किसहि भूख कवनु त्रिपतावै ॥
Ŧah kisėh bẖūkẖ kavan ṯaripṯāvai.
then who was hungry, and who was satisfied?

ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ
करन करावन करनैहारु ॥
Karan karāvan karnaihār.
He is the Cause of causes, the Creator Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
नानक करते का नाहि सुमारु ॥४॥
Nānak karṯe kā nāhi sumār. ||4||
O Nanak, the Creator is beyond calculation. ||4||

ਜਬ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਾਈ
जब अपनी सोभा आपन संगि बनाई ॥
Jab apnī sobẖā āpan sang banā▫ī.
When His Glory was contained within Himself,

ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ
तब कवन माइ बाप मित्र सुत भाई ॥
Ŧab kavan mā▫e bāp miṯar suṯ bẖā▫ī.
then who was mother, father, friend, child or sibling?

ਜਹ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਰਬੀਨ
जह सरब कला आपहि परबीन ॥
Jah sarab kalā āpėh parbīn.
When all power and wisdom was latent within Him,

ਤਹ ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਾ ਕੋਊ ਚੀਨ
तह बेद कतेब कहा कोऊ चीन ॥
Ŧah beḏ kaṯeb kahā ko▫ū cẖīn.
then where were the Vedas and the scriptures, and who was there to read them?

ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ
जब आपन आपु आपि उरि धारै ॥
Jab āpan āp āp ur ḏẖārai.
When He kept Himself, All-in-all, unto His Own Heart,

ਤਉ ਸਗਨ ਅਪਸਗਨ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ
तउ सगन अपसगन कहा बीचारै ॥
Ŧa▫o sagan apasgan kahā bīcẖārai.
then who considered omens to be good or bad?

ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਊਚ ਆਪਨ ਆਪਿ ਨੇਰਾ
जह आपन ऊच आपन आपि नेरा ॥
Jah āpan ūcẖ āpan āp nerā.
When He Himself was lofty, and He Himself was near at hand,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਚੇਰਾ
तह कउन ठाकुरु कउनु कहीऐ चेरा ॥
Ŧah ka▫un ṯẖākur ka▫un kahī▫ai cẖerā.
then who was called master, and who was called disciple?

ਬਿਸਮਨ ਬਿਸਮ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ
बिसमन बिसम रहे बिसमाद ॥
Bisman bisam rahe bismāḏ.
We are wonder-struck at the wondrous wonder of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪਿ ॥੫॥
नानक अपनी गति जानहु आपि ॥५॥
Nānak apnī gaṯ jānhu āp. ||5||
O Nanak, He alone knows His own state. ||5||

ਜਹ ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਸਮਾਇਆ
जह अछल अछेद अभेद समाइआ ॥
Jah acẖẖal acẖẖeḏ abẖeḏ samā▫i▫ā.
When the Undeceiveable, Impenetrable, Inscrutable One was self-absorbed,

ਊਹਾ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮਾਇਆ
ऊहा किसहि बिआपत माइआ ॥
Ūhā kisėh bi▫āpaṯ mā▫i▫ā.
then who was swayed by Maya?

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਦੇਸੁ
आपस कउ आपहि आदेसु ॥
Āpas ka▫o āpėh āḏes.
When He paid homage to Himself,

ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਰਵੇਸੁ
तिहु गुण का नाही परवेसु ॥
Ŧihu guṇ kā nāhī parves.
then the three qualities were not prevailing.

ਜਹ ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਏਕ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ
जह एकहि एक एक भगवंता ॥
Jah ekėh ek ek bẖagvanṯā.
When there was only the One, the One and Only Lord God,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ
तह कउनु अचिंतु किसु लागै चिंता ॥
Ŧah ka▫un acẖinṯ kis lāgai cẖinṯā.
then who was not anxious, and who felt anxiety?

ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ
जह आपन आपु आपि पतीआरा ॥
Jah āpan āp āp paṯī▫ārā.
When He Himself was satisfied with Himself,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁਨਨੈਹਾਰਾ
तह कउनु कथै कउनु सुननैहारा ॥
Ŧah ka▫un kathai ka▫un sunnaihārā.
then who spoke and who listened?

ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ
बहु बेअंत ऊच ते ऊचा ॥
Baho be▫anṯ ūcẖ ṯe ūcẖā.
He is vast and infinite, the highest of the high.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਹੂਚਾ ॥੬॥
नानक आपस कउ आपहि पहूचा ॥६॥
Nānak āpas ka▫o āpėh pahūcẖā. ||6||
O Nanak, He alone can reach Himself. ||6||

ਜਹ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ
जह आपि रचिओ परपंचु अकारु ॥
Jah āp racẖi▫o parpancẖ akār.
When He Himself fashioned the visible world of the creation,

ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ
तिहु गुण महि कीनो बिसथारु ॥
Ŧihu guṇ mėh kīno bisthār.
he made the world subject to the three dispositions.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਤਹ ਭਈ ਕਹਾਵਤ
पापु पुंनु तह भई कहावत ॥
Pāp punn ṯah bẖa▫ī kahāvaṯ.
Sin and virtue then began to be spoken of.

ਕੋਊ ਨਰਕ ਕੋਊ ਸੁਰਗ ਬੰਛਾਵਤ
कोऊ नरक कोऊ सुरग बंछावत ॥
Ko▫ū narak ko▫ū surag bancẖẖāvaṯ.
Some have gone to hell, and some yearn for paradise.

ਆਲ ਜਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ
आल जाल माइआ जंजाल ॥
Āl jāl mā▫i▫ā janjāl.
Worldly snares and entanglements of Maya,

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰ
हउमै मोह भरम भै भार ॥
Ha▫umai moh bẖaram bẖai bẖār.
egotism, attachment, doubt and loads of fear;

ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨ
दूख सूख मान अपमान ॥
Ḏūkẖ sūkẖ mān apmān.
pain and pleasure, honor and dishonor -

ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਓ ਬਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ
अनिक प्रकार कीओ बख्यान ॥
Anik parkār kī▫o bakẖ▫yān.
these came to be described in various ways.

ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ
आपन खेलु आपि करि देखै ॥
Āpan kẖel āp kar ḏekẖai.
He Himself creates and beholds His own drama.

ਖੇਲੁ ਸੰਕੋਚੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੈ ॥੭॥
खेलु संकोचै तउ नानक एकै ॥७॥
Kẖel sankocẖai ṯa▫o Nānak ekai. ||7||
He winds up the drama, and then, O Nanak, He alone remains. ||7||

ਜਹ ਅਬਿਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਤਹ ਆਪਿ
जह अबिगतु भगतु तह आपि ॥
Jah abigaṯ bẖagaṯ ṯah āp.
Wherever the Eternal Lord's devotee is, He Himself is there.

ਜਹ ਪਸਰੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ਸੰਤ ਪਰਤਾਪਿ
जह पसरै पासारु संत परतापि ॥
Jah pasrai pāsār sanṯ parṯāp.
He unfolds the expanse of His creation for the glory of His Saint.

ਦੁਹੂ ਪਾਖ ਕਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਧਨੀ
दुहू पाख का आपहि धनी ॥
Ḏuhū pākẖ kā āpėh ḏẖanī.
He Himself is the Master of both worlds.

ਉਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਉਨਹੂ ਬਨੀ
उन की सोभा उनहू बनी ॥
Un kī sobẖā unhū banī.
His Praise is to Himself alone.

ਆਪਹਿ ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਅਨਦ ਚੋਜ
आपहि कउतक करै अनद चोज ॥
Āpėh ka▫uṯak karai anaḏ cẖoj.
He Himself performs and plays His amusements and games.

ਆਪਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਨ ਨਿਰਜੋਗ
आपहि रस भोगन निरजोग ॥
Āpėh ras bẖogan nirjog.
He Himself enjoys pleasures, and yet He is unaffected and untouched.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਵੈ
जिसु भावै तिसु आपन नाइ लावै ॥
Jis bẖāvai ṯis āpan nā▫e lāvai.
He attaches whomever He pleases to His Name.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਖਿਲਾਵੈ
जिसु भावै तिसु खेल खिलावै ॥
Jis bẖāvai ṯis kẖel kẖilāvai.
He causes whomever He pleases to play in His play.

ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਗਨਤ ਅਤੋਲੈ
बेसुमार अथाह अगनत अतोलै ॥
Besumār athāh agnaṯ aṯolai.
He is beyond calculation, beyond measure, uncountable and unfathomable.

ਜਿਉ ਬੁਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਬੋਲੈ ॥੮॥੨੧॥
जिउ बुलावहु तिउ नानक दास बोलै ॥८॥२१॥
Ji▫o bulāvhu ṯi▫o Nānak ḏās bolai. ||8||21||
As You inspire him to speak, O Lord, so does servant Nanak speak. ||8||21||
