ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ असटपदी ॥ Asatpaḋee. Ashtapadee: ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ संत जना मिलि करहु बीचारु ॥ Sanṫ janaa mil karahu beechaar. Joining the Company of the Saints, practice deep meditation. ਏਕੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ एकु सिमरि नाम आधारु ॥ Ék simar naam aaḋʰaar. Remember the One, and take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਅਵਰਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਸਭਿ ਮੀਤ ਬਿਸਾਰਹੁ ॥ अवरि उपाव सभि मीत बिसारहु ॥ Avar upaav sabʰ meeṫ bisaarahu. Forget all other efforts, O my friend - ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਰਿਦ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥ चरन कमल रिद महि उरि धारहु ॥ Charan kamal riḋ mėh ur ḋʰaarahu. enshrine the Lord’s Lotus Feet within your heart. ਕਰਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥ करन कारन सो प्रभु समरथु ॥ Karan kaaran so parabʰ samraṫʰ. God is All-powerful; He is the Cause of all causes. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਥੁ ॥ द्रिड़ु करि गहहु नामु हरि वथु ॥ Ḋariṛ kar gahhu naam har vaṫʰ. Grasp firmly the object of the Lord’s Name. ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥ इहु धनु संचहु होवहु भगवंत ॥ Ih ḋʰan sanchahu hovhu bʰagvanṫ. Gather this wealth, and become very fortunate. ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੰਤ ॥ संत जना का निरमल मंत ॥ Sanṫ janaa kaa nirmal manṫ. Pure are the instructions of the humble Saints. ਏਕ ਆਸ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ एक आस राखहु मन माहि ॥ Ék aas raakʰo man maahi. Keep faith in the One Lord within your mind. ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ सरब रोग नानक मिटि जाहि ॥१॥ Sarab rog Naanak mit jaahi. ||1|| All disease, O Nanak! Shall then be dispelled. ||1|| ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ जिसु धन कउ चारि कुंट उठि धावहि ॥ Jis ḋʰan ka▫o chaar kunt utʰ ḋʰaavėh. The wealth which you chase after in the four directions - ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ सो धनु हरि सेवा ते पावहि ॥ So ḋʰan har sévaa ṫé paavahi. you shall obtain that wealth by serving the Lord. ਜਿਸੁ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਨਿਤ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ जिसु सुख कउ नित बाछहि मीत ॥ Jis sukʰ ka▫o niṫ baachʰėh meeṫ. The peace, which you always yearn for, O friend - ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥ सो सुखु साधू संगि परीति ॥ So sukʰ saaḋʰoo sang pareeṫ. that peace comes by the love of the Company of the Holy. ਜਿਸੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਕਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਲੀ ਕਰਨੀ ॥ जिसु सोभा कउ करहि भली करनी ॥ Jis sobʰaa ka▫o karahi bʰalee karnee. The glory, for which you perform good deeds - ਸਾ ਸੋਭਾ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ॥ सा सोभा भजु हरि की सरनी ॥ Saa sobʰaa bʰaj har kee sarnee. you shall obtain that glory by seeking the Lord’s Sanctuary. ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ अनिक उपावी रोगु न जाइ ॥ Anik upaavee rog na jaa▫é. All sorts of remedies have not cured the disease - ਰੋਗੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ रोगु मिटै हरि अवखधु लाइ ॥ Rog mitæ har avkʰaḋʰ laa▫é. the disease is cured only by giving the medicine of the Lord’s Name. ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ सरब निधान महि हरि नामु निधानु ॥ Sarab niḋʰaan mėh har naam niḋʰaan. Of all treasures, the Lord’s Name is the supreme treasure. ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ जपि नानक दरगहि परवानु ॥२॥ Jap Naanak ḋargahi parvaan. ||2|| Chant it, O Nanak! And be accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||2|| ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥ मनु परबोधहु हरि कै नाइ ॥ Man parboḋʰahu har kæ naa▫é. Enlighten your mind with the Name of the Lord. ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਤ ਆਵੈ ਠਾਇ ॥ दह दिसि धावत आवै ठाइ ॥ Ḋah ḋis ḋʰaavaṫ aavæ tʰaa▫é. Having wandered around in the ten directions, it comes to its place of rest. ਤਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ता कउ बिघनु न लागै कोइ ॥ Ṫaa ka▫o bigʰan na laagæ ko▫é. No obstacle stands in the way of one ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥ जा कै रिदै बसै हरि सोइ ॥ Jaa kæ riḋæ basæ har so▫é. whose heart is filled with the Lord. ਕਲਿ ਤਾਤੀ ਠਾਂਢਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ कलि ताती ठांढा हरि नाउ ॥ Kal ṫaaṫee tʰaaⁿdʰaa har naa▫o. The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is so hot; the Lord’s Name is soothing and cool. ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਉ ॥ सिमरि सिमरि सदा सुख पाउ ॥ Simar simar saḋaa sukʰ paa▫o. Remember, remember it in meditation, and obtain everlasting peace. ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਆਸ ॥ भउ बिनसै पूरन होइ आस ॥ Bʰa▫o binsæ pooran ho▫é aas. Your fear shall be dispelled, and your hopes shall be fulfilled. ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਆਤਮ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥ भगति भाइ आतम परगास ॥ Bʰagaṫ bʰaa▫é aaṫam pargaas. By devotional worship and loving adoration, your soul shall be enlightened. ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ तितु घरि जाइ बसै अबिनासी ॥ Ṫiṫ gʰar jaa▫é basæ abʰinaasee. You shall go to that home, and live forever. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੩॥ कहु नानक काटी जम फासी ॥३॥ Kaho Naanak kaatee jam faasee. ||3|| Says Nanak, the noose of death is cut away. ||3|| ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥ ततु बीचारु कहै जनु साचा ॥ Ṫaṫ beechaar kahæ jan saachaa. One who contemplates the essence of reality, is said to be the true person. ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਚੋ ਕਾਚਾ ॥ जनमि मरै सो काचो काचा ॥ Janam maræ so kaacho kaachaa. Birth and death are the lot of the false and the insincere. ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵ ॥ आवा गवनु मिटै प्रभ सेव ॥ Aavaa gavan mitæ parabʰ sév. Coming and going in reincarnation is ended by serving God. ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥ आपु तिआगि सरनि गुरदेव ॥ Aap ṫi▫aag saran gurḋév. Give up your selfishness and conceit, and seek the Sanctuary of the Divine Guru. ਇਉ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ इउ रतन जनम का होइ उधारु ॥ I▫o raṫan janam kaa ho▫é uḋʰaar. Thus, the jewel of this human life is saved. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ हरि हरि सिमरि प्रान आधारु ॥ Har har simar paraan aaḋʰaar. Remember the Lord, Har, Har, the Support of the breath of life. ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਨ ਛੂਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ अनिक उपाव न छूटनहारे ॥ Anik upaav na chʰootanhaaré. By all sorts of efforts, people are not saved - ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ सिंम्रिति सासत बेद बीचारे ॥ Simriṫ saasaṫ béḋ beechaaré. not by studying the Smritis, the Shastras or the Vedas. ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ हरि की भगति करहु मनु लाइ ॥ Har kee bʰagaṫ karahu man laa▫é. Worship the Lord with whole-hearted devotion. ਮਨਿ ਬੰਛਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥ मनि बंछत नानक फल पाइ ॥४॥ Man banchʰaṫ Naanak fal paa▫é. ||4|| O Nanak! You shall obtain the fruits of your mind’s desire. ||4|| ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲਸਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਧਨਾ ॥ संगि न चालसि तेरै धना ॥ Sang na chaalas ṫéræ ḋʰanaa. Your wealth shall not go with you; ਤੂੰ ਕਿਆ ਲਪਟਾਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨਾ ॥ तूं किआ लपटावहि मूरख मना ॥ Ṫooⁿ ki▫aa laptaavahi moorakʰ manaa. why do you cling to it, you fool? ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਅਰੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ॥ सुत मीत कुट्मब अरु बनिता ॥ Suṫ meeṫ kutamb ar baniṫaa. Children, friends, family and spouse - ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਕਵਨ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥ इन ते कहहु तुम कवन सनाथा ॥ In ṫé kahhu ṫum kavan sanaaṫʰaa. who of these shall accompany you? ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥ राज रंग माइआ बिसथार ॥ Raaj rang maa▫i▫aa bisṫʰaar. Power, pleasure, and the vast expanse of Maya - ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਛੁਟਕਾਰ ॥ इन ते कहहु कवन छुटकार ॥ In ṫé kahhu kavan chʰutkaar. who has ever escaped from these? ਅਸੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਰਥ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥ असु हसती रथ असवारी ॥ As hasṫee raṫʰ asvaaree. Horses, elephants, chariots and pageantry - ਝੂਠਾ ਡੰਫੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥ झूठा ड्मफु झूठु पासारी ॥ Jʰootʰaa damf jʰootʰ paasaaree. false shows and false displays. ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਨ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥ जिनि दीए तिसु बुझै न बिगाना ॥ Jin ḋee▫é ṫis bujʰæ na bigaanaa. The fool does not acknowledge the One who gave this; ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੫॥ नामु बिसारि नानक पछुताना ॥५॥ Naam bisaar Naanak pachʰuṫaanaa. ||5|| forgetting the Naam, O Nanak! He will repent in the end. ||5|| ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੇਹਿ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ गुर की मति तूं लेहि इआने ॥ Gur kee maṫ ṫooⁿ léhi i▫aané. Take the Guru’s advice, you ignorant fool; ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥ भगति बिना बहु डूबे सिआने ॥ Bʰagaṫ binaa baho doobé si▫aané. without devotion, even the clever have drowned. ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥ हरि की भगति करहु मन मीत ॥ Har kee bʰagaṫ karahu man meeṫ. Worship the Lord with heart-felt devotion, my friend; ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਇ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੋ ਚੀਤ ॥ निरमल होइ तुम्हारो चीत ॥ Nirmal ho▫é ṫumĥaaro cheeṫ. your consciousness shall become pure. ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ चरन कमल राखहु मन माहि ॥ Charan kamal raakʰo man maahi. Enshrine the Lord’s Lotus Feet in your mind; ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ जनम जनम के किलबिख जाहि ॥ Janam janam ké kilbikʰ jaahi. the sins of countless lifetimes shall depart. ਆਪਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ आपि जपहु अवरा नामु जपावहु ॥ Aap japahu avraa naam japaavhu. Chant the Naam yourself, and inspire others to chant it as well. ਸੁਨਤ ਕਹਤ ਰਹਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ सुनत कहत रहत गति पावहु ॥ Sunaṫ kahaṫ rahaṫ gaṫ paavhu. Hearing, speaking and living it, emancipation is obtained. ਸਾਰ ਭੂਤ ਸਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥ सार भूत सति हरि को नाउ ॥ Saar bʰooṫ saṫ har ko naa▫o. The essential reality is the True Name of the Lord. ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੬॥ सहजि सुभाइ नानक गुन गाउ ॥६॥ Sahj subʰaa▫é Naanak gun gaa▫o. ||6|| With intuitive ease, O Nanak! Sing His Glorious Praises. ||6|| ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਮੈਲੁ ॥ गुन गावत तेरी उतरसि मैलु ॥ Gun gaavaṫ ṫéree uṫras mæl. Chanting His Glories, your filth shall be washed off. ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥ बिनसि जाइ हउमै बिखु फैलु ॥ Binas jaa▫é ha▫umæ bikʰ fæl. The all-consuming poison of ego will be gone. ਹੋਹਿ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਬਸੈ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ होहि अचिंतु बसै सुख नालि ॥ Hohi achinṫ basæ sukʰ naal. You shall become carefree, and you shall dwell in peace. ਸਾਸਿ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ सासि ग्रासि हरि नामु समालि ॥ Saas garaas har naam samaal. With every breath and every morsel of food, cherish the Lord’s Name. ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲੀ ਮਨਾ ॥ छाडि सिआनप सगली मना ॥ Chʰaad si▫aanap saglee manaa. Renounce all clever tricks, O mind. ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਨਾ ॥ साधसंगि पावहि सचु धना ॥ Saaḋʰsang paavahi sach ḋʰanaa. In the Company of the Holy, you shall obtain the true wealth. ਹਰਿ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸੰਚਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥ हरि पूंजी संचि करहु बिउहारु ॥ Har poonjee sanch karahu bi▫uhaar. So, gather the Lord’s Name as your capital, and trade in it. ਈਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ ईहा सुखु दरगह जैकारु ॥ Eehaa sukʰ ḋargėh jækaar. In this world you shall be at peace, and in the Court of the Lord, you shall be acclaimed. ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਦੇਖੁ ॥ सरब निरंतरि एको देखु ॥ Sarab niranṫar éko ḋékʰ. See the One permeating all; ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੭॥ कहु नानक जा कै मसतकि लेखु ॥७॥ Kaho Naanak jaa kæ masṫak lékʰ. ||7|| says Nanak, your destiny is preordained. ||7|| ਏਕੋ ਜਪਿ ਏਕੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ॥ एको जपि एको सालाहि ॥ Éko jap éko saalaahi. Meditate on the One, and worship the One. ਏਕੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਮਨ ਆਹਿ ॥ एकु सिमरि एको मन आहि ॥ Ék simar éko man aahi. Remember the One, and yearn for the One in your mind. ਏਕਸ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ਅਨੰਤ ॥ एकस के गुन गाउ अनंत ॥ Ékas ké gun gaa▫o ananṫ. Sing the endless Glorious Praises of the One. ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜਾਪਿ ਏਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥ मनि तनि जापि एक भगवंत ॥ Man ṫan jaap ék bʰagvanṫ. With mind and body, meditate on the One Lord God. ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਏਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ॥ एको एकु एकु हरि आपि ॥ Éko ék ék har aap. The One Lord Himself is the One and Only. ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਆਪਿ ॥ पूरन पूरि रहिओ प्रभु बिआपि ॥ Pooran poor rahi▫o parabʰ bi▫aap. The Pervading Lord God is totally permeating all. ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ਏਕ ਤੇ ਭਏ ॥ अनिक बिसथार एक ते भए ॥ Anik bisṫʰaar ék ṫé bʰa▫é. The many expanses of the creation have all come from the One. ਏਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਪਰਾਛਤ ਗਏ ॥ एकु अराधि पराछत गए ॥ Ék araaḋʰ paraachʰaṫ ga▫é. Adoring the One, past sins are removed. ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ मन तन अंतरि एकु प्रभु राता ॥ Man ṫan anṫar ék parabʰ raaṫaa. Mind and body within are imbued with the One God. ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੮॥੧੯॥ गुर प्रसादि नानक इकु जाता ॥८॥१९॥ Gur parsaaḋ Naanak ik jaaṫaa. ||8||19|| By Guru’s Grace, O Nanak! The One is known. ||8||19||
