ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1. Gauree, First Mehl: ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥ सेवा एक न जानसि अवरे ॥ Sevā ek na jānas avre. Those who serve the One Lord, do not know any other. ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥ परपंच बिआधि तिआगै कवरे ॥ Parpancẖ bi▫āḏẖ ṯi▫āgai kavre. They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts. ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ भाइ मिलै सचु साचै सचु रे ॥१॥ Bẖā▫e milai sacẖ sācẖai sacẖ re. ||1|| Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1|| ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ ऐसा राम भगतु जनु होई ॥ Aisā rām bẖagaṯ jan ho▫ī. Such are the humble devotees of the Lord. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ हरि गुण गाइ मिलै मलु धोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Har guṇ gā▫e milai mal ḏẖo▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o. They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause|| ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ ऊंधो कवलु सगल संसारै ॥ Ūʼnḏẖo kaval sagal sansārai. The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥ दुरमति अगनि जगत परजारै ॥ Ḏurmaṯ agan jagaṯ parjārai. The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world. ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥ सो उबरै गुर सबदु बीचारै ॥२॥ So ubrai gur sabaḏ bīcẖārai. ||2|| They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2|| ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥ भ्रिंग पतंगु कुंचरु अरु मीना ॥ Bẖaring paṯang kuncẖar ar mīnā. The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥ मिरगु मरै सहि अपुना कीना ॥ Mirag marai sėh apunā kīnā. and the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die. ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥ त्रिसना राचि ततु नही बीना ॥३॥ Ŧarisnā rācẖ ṯaṯ nahī bīnā. ||3|| Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3|| ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥ कामु चितै कामणि हितकारी ॥ Kām cẖiṯai kāmaṇ hiṯkārī. The lover of women is obsessed with sex. ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ क्रोधु बिनासै सगल विकारी ॥ Kroḏẖ bināsai sagal vikārī. All the wicked are ruined by their anger. ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ पति मति खोवहि नामु विसारी ॥४॥ Paṯ maṯ kẖovėh nām visārī. ||4|| Honor and good sense are lost, when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4|| ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ पर घरि चीतु मनमुखि डोलाइ ॥ Par gẖar cẖīṯ manmukẖ dolā▫e. The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife. ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ गलि जेवरी धंधै लपटाइ ॥ Gal jevrī ḏẖanḏẖai laptā▫e. The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥ गुरमुखि छूटसि हरि गुण गाइ ॥५॥ Gurmukẖ cẖẖūtas har guṇ gā▫e. ||5|| The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥ जिउ तनु बिधवा पर कउ देई ॥ Ji▫o ṯan biḏẖvā par ka▫o ḏe▫ī. The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger; ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥ कामि दामि चितु पर वसि सेई ॥ Kām ḏām cẖiṯ par vas se▫ī. she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money, ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥ बिनु पिर त्रिपति न कबहूं होई ॥६॥ Bin pir ṯaripaṯ na kabahūʼn ho▫ī. ||6|| but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6|| ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ पड़ि पड़ि पोथी सिम्रिति पाठा ॥ Paṛ paṛ pothī simriṯ pāṯẖā. You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Simritees, ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥ बेद पुराण पड़ै सुणि थाटा ॥ Beḏ purāṇ paṛai suṇ thātā. and read Vedas and Puraanas until tired; ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥ बिनु रस राते मनु बहु नाटा ॥७॥ Bin ras rāṯe man baho nātā. ||7|| but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7|| ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ जिउ चात्रिक जल प्रेम पिआसा ॥ Ji▫o cẖāṯrik jal parem pi▫āsā. As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain, ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥ जिउ मीना जल माहि उलासा ॥ Ji▫o mīnā jal māhi ulāsā. and as the fish delights in the water, ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥ नानक हरि रसु पी त्रिपतासा ॥८॥११॥ Nānak har ras pī ṯaripṯāsā. ||8||11|| Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||
